Dead screen, transfering documents via firewire - need help

Greetings,
So I've got a 1 Ghz iMac (floating pivot screen.) - my primary mission critical workstation. My screen died today. Grrrr.
No time to muck about, I went out and purchased a mac mini (1.5 Ghz single intel core), I want to transfer all data from the old box to the new asap.
The migration assistant that appears at first boot up is cool, and I was able to move all applications. (handy!)
Problem is that I couldn't move all my user documents because the old Mac's drive is 80 gig and the new is only 60. So I figured I would just drag and drop as much as I can manually.
I've gone and reattached the old mac to the new via firewire and booted up the old box as an external drive. Problem is, when I open up the user folder on the old hard drive I'm not seeing any files.... ie. all folders including the old desktop folder are empty....its like the files are hidden or something.
Help please.

could it be because under ownership and permissions I have no access to these folders? Is that why the folders "appear" empty? - then my next question would be, how can I give myself access to them?
Remembering that I am unable to boot up and use the old iMac (except in external drive mode) since the screen (or video card???) is dead.
Also - I'm attempting spotlight searches from the new mac on the old mac's HD for known files on the old mac's desktop and its coming back with nothing...
What a mess ....maybe

    Hi,
I have the old MacBook Pro. Upgraded to Mountain Lion which completely wrecked the system. So downgraded to Snow Leopard.
Then updated the combo update. Now stuck on blue screen at start-up.
Need help. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • IPhone 5 screen wont turn on. (Need help or info, please and thank you.)

So i got an Iphone 5, and i accedently droped it in the sink. i took it out, whipped it off,  i put it in my pocket and left it alone.
the next day the screen was not working, moments later, it(Iphon5) turned off.  tried turnng it back on but it wouldnt work.
so, again i left it. everything still works, its just that the screen wont turn on, i could still play music snapshot stuff,
but my screen wont tun on.
    I NEED HELP.

I don't beleive this is a known problem and you should probably bring your phone to a local Genius Bar (make an appointment here) as this is likely a hardware issue (a problem with your phone realizing that you removed it from your ear).
If you're willing to tinker with it a bit, you can determine if this is a software issue by backing up your iPhone (separately ensure your photos, videos and music is backed up) and then "Restore" your phone. If the restoration solves the problem, you're dealing with a software issue. If the problem still exists, you're almost definitely dealing with a hardware issue.

  • Blu error screen! STOP 0x000000F4. Need help.

    Hi.
i have this laptop with win 7 installed. it worked fine, until i did one o cleaning procceses with TuneUp2009.
( i do it regulary every month and it was ok ) but now after tuneup2009 restarted my pc, on start up he show this stop error. STOP  0x000000F4.
I tried safe mode but is cannot acces, the same error code. i have tried to format my pc with a disc win7 but still no succes,
it seems the pc doesnt do boot from cd room ( i have changed boot order on bios setup).
    And now need help
    Thank u.

That is still not the complete model but gives me some idea of the age of the system. Can you get into the BIOS [F10] as you power on to try a hard drive test? The hard drive can get so corrupt it will affect all attempts at booting. I might also try removing the hard drive and see if it will then boot from CD or usb flash drive.

See Page 17 of the above for hard drive removal instructions.

  • Transfering music via firewire

My daugher has all her music on an eMac. She just got a macbook. We've transfered all personal data over using the utilities and firewire. I thought it would transfer music files over also? It hasn't. Can anyone help me with the best way to transfer the music files over without having to copy on a cd first.
    What step did I miss?
    Thank you

Thank you for the reply. I did use the TDM the first time. I was successful in transfering things such as settings on her computer. What didn't transfer over and i can't figure out how to get transfered over is her music and pictures. This didn't come over in the transfer. I believed I followed all the proper steps as the TDM was pretty clear how to transfer. Is there other steps I need to take with TDM to get pictures and music to transfer
    Thanks

  • Screen has cut out, desperately need help!

The screen on my iMac has cut out. It has happened before and I have had to restart the system to get it back. This time however that hasn't worked. I have booted up the system and can access the files using a second machine via ethernet and the screen did come back briefly when I pressed the ctrl ket before going blank again. I am pretty sure it is not a hardware problem but desperately need a suggestion to help recover the situation.

When I start the machine the screen briefly goes white after the startup chime then goes black again. The same thing happens when I do command-R. The system continues to boot up and I can access the files from my other machine. On two or three ocasions the screen has momentarily come on when I have touched a key or the mouse. For a brief second everything looks OK then it is gone again.

  • Dead drive in a Zen Xtra, need help w/ replacem

The dead dri've in my 40Gb Zen Xtra has been removed from the player and its been sitting in pieces for the past week or so. I would like to know what I would need to do to a replacement dri've (have a 40Gb notebook dri've ready to go) in order for the player to A. recognize it and B. be able to put songs on it. Do I have to format it in a certain way before hand or will the firmware update be able to do that? Help is much appreciated.
    -Mobious-

I was having similar troubles trying to get a big Maxtor operational. I had to set a jumper on the back of the drive ... then was able to follow the advice given below. (Please see complete text of other item).
I've been successful using Maxtor 60GB IDE drives on Solaris 8 on Sparc by doing the following:
    1. Boot the system off System Software 1 of 2 CD, and follow the instructions until you can open a command window.
    2. Once in the command window you need to type "format". Choose the hard drive (disk), but then you need to create a new "type" that is compatible with the solaris driver software and uses most of the disk. For large IDE drives, the only thing that matters is the actual number of usable sectors (which are 512 bytes each). You can go to the Maxtor website to get the real number of sectors for your drive. Then you need to make up a set of cyl, head, sectors numbers to enter into the "type". The limits on the Solaris driver (found by hitting enter at the prompts) are: max Cyl: 32767, max heads: 64, max sectors: 256. These are different than the limits for Windows. ATA limits max heads to 16, so I use that to be safe. Therefore I choose to use 256 sectors, 16 heads, and then choose a number of cylinders that will yield a number equal or less than the total number of sectors allowed on the drive (ie: total sectors = cyl*heads*sectors). Then subtract 2 from the cylinders when entering the number of cyl at the prompt, as you'll need them for the following steps where it wants to reserve two cylinders. When you get to the name of the drive, I choose to type the name of the drive with an * appended to the end to signify a difference. Once done defining the "type", write the label.
    3. Proceed with installation.
(Again, please see other item in forum (something about installing a bix maxtor).
You can email me at [email protected] if you want more specific advice.
    Cheers, John

  • Green Screen in 7.6.4 - Need Help

    Hi,
I am running QuickTime Player Version 7.6.4 on an old Mac that has Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. Over the last year or so, I have recorded some short videos using a Kodak Play->Touch video camera and watched them on my Mac. They all worked fine. Today, however, for the first time in months, I recorded a new video, uploaded it to my Mac, went to play it and ... I got sound but no visual. Instead, I get a green screen for the duration of the video. I decided to try playing some of the older videos, and they no longer work. All of them have the same problem: audio with a green screen. All the videos I'm playing (well, trying to play), by the way, are listed as "MPEG-4 Movie" with Codecs of "H.264, AAC."
I have read the other threads relating to green-screen problems, but none have been able to help me fix my problem. I'm sure it's partly (mostly?) because I am far from a computer expert.
Is there anyone out there who knows how I can get my videos to play again? Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Owen
P.S. If I've omitted any computer-related info that may be helpful, please let me know.

i wouldn't worry too much unless the song doesn't work. it sounds like that you have to make sure that instruments that you have cabled are cabled.
to be honest though, if he is a sound engineer and your looking for the sound engineering benefit, then simply export song as audio files, something you can easily do in the file menu. then take them to him. he can import them into his own version of logic and get to work like that.

  • Grey Screen on start-up - Dad needs help again

    Hello to the mac family,
As a regular 9.2 user, I am stuck once again. I am trying to help my son's roommate at school. I have not seen the computer. I think....
He has a powerbook G-4.... On start up, he just gets the grey screen and the X sign. He is running X.4 (Tiger). The machine is just out of warranty time.
This problem just started. I told him to start up holding down the shift key to get into safe mode. When he holds down the shift key it just starts up and hangs at the grey screen with the X on it. It doesn't go further. Because he lives far away (from college) I am planning to bring my son's i-book disks to the college. My son has an i-book with Tiger.
Will this allow him to get to the utilities and check things from there?
    As I stated I am a 9 user so I can't help too much.
Could someone give us step by step instructions or a link to an article that will help us.
He has disconnected all periphs and plugged into an outlet.
I am floundering and would like to help him. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..........mGb...........Jim (dad)
I also posted in Powe books in the hopes that someone can help me.

    Hello Allan,
First of all...cool last name (hahahah)
Now for te serious stuff. Thanks for the help.
My son's mother drove to campus and bought the discs for his computer. The computer will start from disk and we get to utilities, first aid. Then we tried to repair. It started the process and after several minutes we got an error message that stated could not complete because of an error.
Next he ws thinking of re-installing even though this was not a great option. As it turns out.... The original install disc can't see the HD as a destination to install to.
He took the computer to an apple store and talked to the "Mac genius bar" Ithink that is what it is called. They told him to try running "Warrior" and see if that can fix things. He is a college kid and I don't know if he can come up with the $$ for Warrior.
What is troubling is that this problem seems to be the direct result of Downloading an update for Quick Time. He did this last night and today the computer wouldn't start.???
I thank you for the links adn will read them carefully now that I am back home. Another odd thinng...I couldn't get the computer to boot in "Safe Mode or the other "fsq?? or whatever that is. I tried holding down apple + S...while booting, but it just starts up to the grey screen and stops. No unix commands show. I am over my head but was trying to help him out. I will post with any progress...Thanks again for the help....mGb.....Jim Sampson
    Allan, the error message was:
Catalog file entry not found for extent
    Volume check failed.
The underlying task reported failure on exit.
Just though this might help. Jim

  • Transferring Music! I NEED HELP FAST!

    Heylo!
Recently my laptop computer crashed and on my desk top I am trying to transfer my music from my iPod to my computer. I know how to transfer my purchases on my iPod from there but not my music I did not purchase on iTunes that I copied from CD's. Please help me ASAP!

hmmm, can't put that iTouch into disk mode, so your best bet is probably to buy a 3rd-party ipod manager that specifically supports iTouch.
Perhaps CopyTrans - I've never used it myself, but have seen good reports from other users
