Dead Superdrive solution...kind of...

My superdrive (pioneer 106D) stop working again (replaced about 1,5 years ago); as recommended I zapped PRAM (commandoption+PR) 3x times boing, repair permissions, restart again; Toast 6 still doesn't work BUT; burning from the Finder works !, you need to set speed at 2x, not faster !!, if you set faster you get the "0x8002006D" error code so far I tried Verbatim DVD-R and Traxdata DVD-R. I haven't tried burning from iDVD or iMovie yet, Anyone ?
I installed on a firewire external drive 10.3.9 with Toast 6, booting up from this external drive everything works fine with Toast 6, BUT the burning speed is only 2x !!,even you put your recorder preferences as 'fastest' setting I know that my Pioneer 106D is a 8x superdrive and the Verbatim DVD-R is 16x speed certified....
My conclusion; the superdrive is ok, but some software (apple (security)updates ?) screw it up !

Actually the Superdrive on the earliest iMac flat panels only supports 2x DVD burning. You'll find that in the specs.
http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacFlatPanel.html
"SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW); writes DVD-R discs at 2x speed, reads DVDs at 6x speed, writes CD-R discs at 8x speed, writes CD-RW discs at 4x speed, reads CDs at 24x speed"
There is also a firmware update for the drive to be able to understand 4x and faster media, but it doesn't actually increase the burn speed:

  • Burning iMovies, Dead Superdrive and Crossover Cable Connections - oh my!

Is the following solution to my scenario possible:
I have a dead Superdrive in one of my eMacs and am unable to burn (obviously). I would still like to use the eMac to create movies using iMovie but am wondering if I can connect this eMac to another eMac using a crossover cable, and use the eMac with the working Superdrive to burn the DVD?
I have a fear that this wont be possible if the video files need to be on the computer that is doing the burning. I teach at a school and money is not freely accessible (I realize I could get an external burner and problem solved but this might not be possible and am looking for alternate solutions - maybe this is too crazy for anyone to have attempted before).
Thanks for any and all input.

Probably a slightly easier and faster way to access the iMovie project from the "defective" drive eMac is to hook the two emacs together with a standard Firewire cable. Now boot the eMac with the bad drive and the project into Target mode. This makes that eMac look like an external hard drive to the other Mac and will appear on the other Mac's desktop as a drive. Now simply open the project directly off the hard drive of the eMac and it will be no different than loading the project from an external drive. Or you can simply copy the project over into the other eMac.

  • Super Apple Care Service on dead Superdrive

This is why Apple is the best.
I have a dead Superdrive, it ejects everything.
So I called AppleCare and they said to take it in to get a new Superdrive.
Called my local reseller/repair company in Green Bay ( no comments on Sundays game please)... and talked to the service tech, who said he'd call me back.
He did, within a week, and told me he has my new Superdrive.
I Haven't even brought in the iMac for them to look at!
They ordered and got the part, BEFORE it was looked at.
Apple loves us. Trusts user's word on problems, and knows what this kind of service means.
I might be able to get my iMac Superdrive replaced, while I wait!!!
I hope some, who have problems, take heed that Apple does offer the best service.
Talk to Apple, and your local service techs. They like your input.
This was, since 1987, my very first repair of any Mac I've owned. I have had 3 new ones, and two used ones.
I am not a special customer. Or a corporate customer.
I'm a regular user like everyone in here.
I may be an unhappy Packer fan, but I am a very happy Mac today.

<< Apple loves us. Trusts user's word on problems, and knows what this kind of service means. >>
I'm very happy for you that your service was so good, but let's be honest, I don't think it had anything to do with "trust." It can't be a surprise to Apple that an iMac Superdrive failed. Just take a look around this forum.
    Sorry about the Packers, btw.

  • Bootcamp xp, dead superdrive. Flash Drive options?

    Hello all,
My superdrive is dead and I was wondering if I can still install bootcamp via bootable flash drive. I made an image of my xp pro cd and I'm not sure what I can do from here. Thanks

    Hi,
haven't tried it myself and it may not even work with Macs, but have a look here http://www.vandomburg.net/installing-windows-xp-from-usb/

Did you find a fix? I am having the EXACT same problem, mine actually spits out the disk, then shuts down! I have been trying to burn some photos, & can't. I also tried to back-up my photos with an external hard drive I bout online @ apple.com..... and my computer refuses to recognize it?!? Frustrating!

  • IPhone 4 dead-no solutions

I really need help with fixing my phone. Today my father called my phone and it froze up. I held in the top button and it powered off. That was five hours ago and my phone will still not turn on. This happened to me a week ago and i waited a couple hours and tried the master reset and it worked fine. I plugged it in to my MacBook, restored it to factory settings and it worked. But today nothing is working.
    I have tried:
1 Holding the top button for 15-20 seconds.
2 Holding both the top button and home button for 15-20 seconds.
3 Plugging my phone in the my MacBook Pro (the MacBook doesn't even detect it)
4 Plugging my iPhone in to another computer.
If you have any idea how to fix this please let me know. I feel like I've tried everything but I'm hoping I haven't. I would appreciate anyone's help!

This is what I was afraid of. There isn't an Apple store around where I live that isn't 3 hours away. Apple said I could mail it in but they said if it was a software issue they wouldn't replace it.

  • Superdrive dead, can I use iBook combo drive

My superdrive had died, can I hook up to my iMac my iBook so I can use it's combo drive?

Re my message below regarding the dead superdrive, my computer is an iMac G4, not G3.

  • Replacing Intel iMac Superdrive

    Hi All,
So, my iMac's "Superdrive" isn't all that super. Over the past couple of months, it started acting up. It began with some scraping noises when I put a DVD into it. A few weeks later, it started to randomly spit out discs. I would put one in, it would read it for a few seconds, then it would just eject it. The last straw was when I tried to install Final Cut Express and it just took in the DVD and never gave it back. I tried all of the various solutions mentioned here to eject the disc, but nothing worked, so I took it to Apple. The "genius" there told me after doing less to diagnose the problem than I did that I would have to pay $400 for a new DVD drive since my computer was out of warranty.
Upon hearing that piece of bad news, I set out to replace the drive myself. I ordered one from a site recommended by a friend. When I removed the existing drive, I discovered that it was a Pioneer DVR-K06PD. The new drive that came was an unbranded UJ-875. It had the same PATA connector on the back, but would not power up when I put it into the iMac. I ordered a replacement drive and received an identical model, which also didn't power up. Just to make sure I didn't damage anything, I reconnected the old Pioneer drive and it powered up just fine. It still wouldn't read anything, but it showed me that it wasn't the cable that was at fault.
*So, my question is, does my iMac only work with DVR-K06PD drives? I'm having a hard time locating a compatible after-market unit since most of the superdrives are for laptops and it doesn't seem like too many people on the web have tried to replace their iMac drive.*
    Thanks in advance!

Okay, this is really from left field, but here's my tale. I upgraded to Snow Leopard the week it came out. All seemed fine. About 2 weeks after the upgrade, I went to burn a DVD, but when I popped the disc in, nothing happened and I couldn't eject the disc even with system reboots, P-RAM and SMC resets, etc. The System Profiler didn't see the drive at all. It occured to me that it might be Snow Leopard related, but I couldn't find anything to substantiate it on line. A lot of people are reported SuperDrive failures, but there doesn't seem to be a mass consensus that it's software related.
I have a couple of other machines with working optical drives, so I was just going to wait until I had a spare 80 or 90 bucks and buy an external (these days that might have been a long wait).
Today however, I downloaded the Blackberry Desktop software for the Mac (for some odd reason my teenage daughter only wanted a Blackberry even though I was willing to get her an iPhone). Anyway to make a long story somewhat shorter, the Blackberry app install required a restart. And poof, all of a sudden the disc that had been stuck in my supposedly dead Superdrive popped out (after 3 weeks and umpteen restarts along the way) and is now working fine.
Maybe Software Update installed something, that kicked in on this last reboot. Who knows. It seems impossible to think that the Blackberry app installed anything that fixed it. But it might be worth a try.
Or maybe it was just tired an needed a vacation.

  • Superdrive is no longer recognized

I just tried to pop in my brand spanking new Six Feet Under vol.2 soundtrack to rip to itunes....and the superdrive no longer grabs the cd, and when i checked out "about this mac" and looked under "disc burning", there is no longer any optical drive present. Also, when i press the eject button nothing happens on screen either. There is no cd stuck in the drive, and when i try and put a new cd in I can push it into the drive without any resistance at all, but I'd rather not get a cd stuck in there since its obviously not working. I tried restarting my computer to see if it was just a fluke, but it is still as if there is just no optical drive present. I purchased my iMac back in at the end of January and hope this is under warranty or something. Please help me out because this is the first mac problem i've ever really had, and love my system otherwise.

I have an update to my problem.
I recently got my computer to recognize the Superdrive. The steps I took to do so were:
-I opened up my computer to check the drive and connection cable to make sure there was no way a lack of connection.
    -Reset PMU
    -Reset PRAM
-Went into Open Firmware and used the commands (reset-nvram, set-defaults, reset-all)
Booted my computer and sure enough my computer now acknowledges the existence of the superdrive; HOWEVER, it still does not accept any discs. It does not accept them to even start spinning, as soon as the disc is pushed in the drive throws it out with a negative ****** tone.
Due to the new developments, is there any way to fix the problem?
Do these symptoms indicate a dead Superdrive?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Java technology/framework suggestions required for solution.

    Hi,
I'm a C/PRO*C developer (for the past 12 years) and have been asked to do some Java ( which I haven't touched for 13 years).
I would like you input on the 'correct' solution (kind of like an architectural overview) of the technologies I should be looking at.
There are two parts to this.
I need to write a web browser/Application that picks up a file locally on windows PC and reads the contents of the file to populate some url parameters which go to a specific web sevice via HTTPS.
I then need a web service or some kind of servlet (I guess) that on receipt of the request by the client then stores (to a database) the request for auditing and then creates a soap message (using the data receieved) to an external third party( WSDL provided by thirdpparty). Once the thirdparty responds the web server then generates a web page for the client which includes a number of options and details retrieved from the thirdparty are displayed and on the client selecting them the result is sent to the server and the selected option is stored.
Part of this must be that the server must be capable of running as a number of instances. It must be highly secure.
What java technologies/frameworks should be looked out? Is my very rough design fundamentally floored?
    Thanks in advance.

So should I use servlets as opposed to JSP? or JCF?Servlets are not opposed to JSP. (JCF? Do you mean JSF?) You can and would use both Servlets and JSP, however, I have grown to believe that JSPs are awful and you should use Velocity instead. From what I've heard of JSF, I'd avoid that too.
Essentially then create a servlet that accepts HTTP request and manipulates a call to the thirdparty, audits data to database, and returns a page back to client which then accepts the option. The server accepts the HTTP request and deals with that lower-level stuff for you, then it invokes your servlet.
The servlet shouldn't call the third party, etc.; it should invoke other code (that you'd write) to do all that. You need a layer of abstraction between your business logic and the web tier. Among other things this will make it much easier to test.
If I were wanting to run this as a in multiple instances then I create a connection pool to the database. But could multiple app instances be able to use one network connection to the ThirdParty?I suppose they could but it seems like more trouble than it's worth and a whole layer of infrastructure that I wouldn't bother with unless (a) you've demonstrated that it's a problem during profiling, and (b) you find that there's some preferably open-source library that handles this for you.

  • Creation of solution for J2EE system

    Dear All,
We need to add our EP7 (JAVA) in solman as new solution kindly suggest.
    Thanks,
    De'

    Hi Surojeet Dey,
Use this note: "Note 987835 - How to define Solutions in SMSY for Diagnostics".
    Steps:
    1. SMSY->Landscape Components->Server->Right Click and Create new server.
    2. SMSY->Landscape Components->Databases->Right Click and Create new database.
    3. SMSY->Landscape Components->System Components->Right Click and Create new system component. Enter System Component name(eg., EP7_J) and choose Type as "Java".
    4. SMSY->Landscape Components->Systems->Right Click and Create new system.
Enter a System name(eg., EP7_S); choose Product as "SAP Netweaver" and Product Version as "SAP Netweaver 7.0(2004s)". Save the changes.
    5. Now select the created system(EP7_S), Go to tab "Selection of Main Instances" on the rightside.
Check the check-boxes of "Enterprise Portal" for "Relevant" as well as "System Component" and enter the created java system name(in this case EP7_J). So you linked the java system to EP system.
    6. Next, Create logical component and assign this logical component to the EP system.
    7. Finally create a solution and assign this logical component to this solution.
You can use SAP tutors also to create Systems(SMSY), Logical components and Solution.

  • Turnkey solution for so many features?

We are a small Tutoring business.
We would like to add to our site the ability of our clients
to login (secured) and have access to several features.
    1. Make one time or scheduled credit card payments
    2. View student progress reports (on-line form) posted by
    tutors
    3. View a monthly calendar and scheduled sessions and have
the ability to schedule or reschedule sessions
    4. View other pages including recommended reading lists etc.
In addition, we would like for our employees to be able to
login and post their availability to the same calendar (not
viewable by the client) or make changes to their schedules. In this
way we are trying to automate scheduling as much as possible. Also,
we would like our tutors to be able to update automated progress
reports and to post notes that can viewed by the client.
We anticipate adding a subscription service (free to clients)
that showcases a comprehensive list (updated daily) of family
events in and around the Los Angeles area. We would like events
from this page to post to our clients calendar on a daily basis. We
would like the events page to have an advanced searchable database
of current, future and past events so that a parent can search by
age or by type of event (museum, musical etc).
Finally we would like to control all of this through a web
based control panel, to manage all users and employee information,
calendars and other content. We would also like the subscription
service to be easily editable as we anticipate outsourcing the
internet research and content editing and content and images will
    be changing daily.
I thought of using a turnkey solution, kind of a shopping
cart but could not figure a calendar into it. If such a package
already exits I would be very interested.
My skills are limited. Any ideas would be a great help. On a
    small budget at this time.
    Thanks in advance!

I have had my activations reset and have synchronised my two pc's to the same account. This has
cured the problem for me and my ebook is useable once more.
I still believe there is an opportunity for Adobe developers to alleviate this by clarifying some of the "do's and don'ts" in the installation notes for the software. (That is assuming that the "activation limitation" is something that cannot be dispensed with).

  • IPhone Dead Pixel

Hey everyone.  recently got my iphone about three weeks ago and have already noticed a dead pixel. It is a white pixel on a black background, particularly noticeable when charging and booting up. I love my iphone, it works great its just that this dead pixel is kinda frustrating considering the amount of money I spent for this phone.
I was wondering if apple would replace my iphone?
And also, how long does the warranty last for dead pixels? Should I return it before the 30 day mark, or will they still replace it up to a year?
    Thanks for your help.

    mdigregori wrote:
so as long as its under a year, they will replace my phone with a dead pixel?
    Maybe.
But you will need to take it to an Apple store or go here -> https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

  • A bunch of dead pixels?

Hey, my 3 month old macbook suddenly gained about 15 dead pixels today out of no where :s... i tried the massage option, but it didnt work. what other options can i go to? the dead pixels are kind of annoying, considering the macbook being almost new
    thanks.

I noticed 1 dead pixel on my screen, near the upper left portion of the phone app icon. I tried to live with it, but once I noticed it I obsessed over it.
I finally decided to drive the two hours to my nearest Apple store just to have the piece of mind of having had a genius look at it.
He swapped it out easy as pie, but as soon as I got home I noticed a single stuck pixel on the new phone! This one in the middle of the screen....
Everything on the phone works great though... battery life, volume, functionality.. so, I have decided not to go through all that hooplah again, I am happy with it and now that I am over it I don't even notice the speck..
If you are close to an Apple store or if you have an obvious number of dead/stuck pixels you should definitely have it swapped out.
The rep I spoke to at 1-800-myiphone told me there is a range of dead pixels that they consider acceptable, so at some point Apple will require a certain number of dead/stuck pixels to warrant repair or exchange...
