Dead Time Capsule replaced by a refurb but now drops connection...

Hi Guys,
I took delivery of Apple's replacement for my dead TC with the fried PSU. Sadly it's only a refurb and I'm having problems maintaining a connection to it via my iMac. It's connected via Gbit ethernet and I can mount the TC and the USB back-up drive I have attached to it onto my desktop.
All I'm doing is trying to copy back all the files from the back-up to get the TC back to where it was before it died. So far I've been doing this for 24 hours as the two drives both keep disappearing from the desktop.
Is there something I can tweak to make these connect more reliably? If not Apple can have this back too. I just don't have time to continually troubleshoot Apple stuff right now.
Cheers
rich

If it's not working, just send it back to Apple. It should work out of the box.

    Do the usual wireless things.
Change the wireless name to simple name with only alphanumerics and no spaces.
Set to manual and use channels 1, 6, 11 in turn.
For testing take off the security altogether.
The iphone only works on 2.4ghz so only that band is relevant.

  • I deleted time capsule files that were old, but now they won't delete from the trash

I deleted some time capsule files from the drive I am using for time machine.  It placed them in the trash, but it won't delete them.  It is asking if I want to delete only locked files or if I want to delete all files.  I have tried both, but they are still showing up in the trash.  It won't remove them.  Does anyone have any suggestions, as I do not know what else to do.  By the way I tried holding the option key and clicking empty trash and that did not work either.

Are these files being used by Time Machine. If so, this is how to delete files from a Time Machine backup. You can not delete them using Finder. Mac 101: Time Machine

To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.

  • Time capsule works for pc laptop, but can't connect new ipad?

Got my new ipad and find that I cannot connect it to the Time Capsule even though the Time Capsule connection works for a pc laptop.  I tried my ereader which used to connect and also will not connect.  I was on the phone for a couple hours with Apple Care, but now that it appears to be a Time Capsule problem they can't help.  So frustrated, just want to get to my ipad!  Thanks for any help.  Please be gentle, as I need plain talk, I'm not that tech savvy.

If you reset the router , it will come back to factory default settings and your laptop will get disconnected.
I think you need to check the wireless settings.
Open the setup page of the router. Go to Wireless tab. Check the network name. Go to Wireless security tab. Check the wireless security settings and make sure that you have the correct network key. Go to Wireless MAC filter sub tab and make sure that it is disabled.
Try to connect to the wireless network again on IPAD.

  • Dead time capsule, partial fix but no thanks to Apple.

I posted 3 weeks ago after finding time cap dead, no power etc. Calls to Apple did nothing as machine, 1TB at over £300 quid and 18 months old, was not covered by warranty and if I bought a new one I could not take out extended warranty unless I bought a computer to go with it!!!! Local Apple support couldnt fix and said Apple didnt allow them to open the box!!
Anyway perusing shelves at PC world I found a CnM Docking station which is what it says and takes hard drives a bit like IPod dock. So opened up Time capsule and extracted HD, plugged in dock and connected USB. It works, well to a fashion, I can see and read and extract backed up files and it backs up normally. No wifi and the time machine display does not happen, but for £29! yes only £29 I have recovered my back ups and can carry on.
    RESULT!!!!!

That's seems to have fixed it. I thought that I did create a new network setting for Airport, I guess that is why I didn't attempt to try it again. Thanks.

  • How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

I found this having had the same problem...
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=553818
Having removed the hard drive I'm finding I can't reformat it. I manage to mount the HD but Disk Utility crashes when trying to format (HD attached to Mac via Newer Tech. SATA cables to USB) and causes what I think is a kernal panic on my Mac which hard crashes. I see 3 partitions when attempting to mount one of which is AFP. Anyone got any ideas about how to do this? I've dug around but the only progress I've made is to note others have had to work around ACL's when replacing the logic board of the TC. Not sure if this even relates to the problem. However the tool for doing this seems to have been removed from SL. (Forum references to this procedure all relate to 10.5).

  • Data recovery on dead Time Capsule

My Time Capsule died and I have files on it that I don't have else where. The Time Capsule is still under waranty, but if I have someone recover the disk for me the waranty will be broken and then I won't get a new one from Apple. Does anyone know if Apple can perform data recovery on a dead Time Capsule AND give me a new one or repair the broken one?

    How old is the TC?
What model, A1xxx from the bottom if it?
Apple are telling people to store files on the TC so ring them up and say you were using it as you were told and now it is broken, what are they going to do?
They generally refuse to do more than swap to a new one.. the whole point of the TC is backup.. not file store.. so it has no way to backup and is considered a sealed unit.
What is dead btw? On a recent one, a dead hard disk is going to require some work to get files out of, if at all.
My advice would be to very carefully open the TC yourself and see if the TC works without the hard disk in it.. and plug the disk into a computer with usb to sata box.. you can get some recovery software if the disk does work.. otherwise it needs to go to a data centre. Then put it all back into the TC.. seal it up again.. and present it for replacement.. !!

    1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
    2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
    3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
    4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for.

  • Dead Time Capsule: Power Off...No Response

    One more dead time capsule.
    18 months old.
    Power off... no response.
    Will never buy one again.

    Another One!!
I purchased a time capsule in April 2008
This time capsule stopped working about 2 weeks ago and I took it to the Apple Service Centre
As the product is out of warranty I was told I need pay rmb200 to have it looked at. This was not a problem but 4 days later I was called and told they cannot do anything with the product as they are unable to open the unit and my only option was to buy a new one. After getting less than 2 years use out of the unit I was not going to purchase a new one.....
It amazes me that after 2 years I cannot get the unit repaired when it obviously only a problem with the power source as the drive is working OK (I ripped it out!) and why I get charged 200rmb by the service provider when they know they cannot do anything...
This is simply a bad product and trying to get any contact in Apple to complain impossible!

  • Is there a refund policy for dead time capsule?

I have seen that at one time apple was replacing dead time capsules.  Is apple giving any incentive to those that die to purchase future products?  Would I be wasting my time taking it in to the Genius Bar?
I know it's dead.  No light, no fan, nothing.

There was extended warranty for the first 6months worth of production.. and that is now closed as all products from 2008 have now passed 3years.. there is no discussion beyond 3years.. it is not designed to last longer.. that is for sure.
If you have applecare on a computer it covers the TC that is less than 3years.. if so Apple will exchange it.. no file recovery.. too bad for anything lost!!
Sometimes if you sweet talk and buy loads of Apple products.. and the genius is in a good mood and the wind is in the west with waxing moon, they will replace it. Purely out of random pity perhaps. Even a genius must have occasional pangs of conscience.
Overall they will offer you a new one, at somewhat above retail, and take your old one.. to be safely disposed of.. most people do not fall for this. You can tear it open and pull out the hard disk yourself for nothing.. and not give Apple money.. to take your dead TC which they can then refubish and sell or use for people who are still under warranty.
You can also repair it.. or have it repaired. Repairs can be very cheap if you have some mechanical basic soldering skills.

  • I just purchased a 3TB Time Capsule.  I live in Italy and have 220V power.  The Time Capsule is rated for that, but the cord says 125V.  Can I use this cord with an adapter, or do I need to buy a new cord at an Italian store?

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

  • Can Time Capsule replace my old wireless router?

I would like to use time capsule as my router. But when I plug it straight into the phone line, I lose the internet connection. Can this be done?

    Hi,
You cannot connect the Time Capsule directly to a telephone line. Normally, an ADSL or cable modem is connected to the WAN port.
Is your existing device a combined ADSL modem and wireless router? Any details about the model and the type of service?

Trying to connect Airport time capsule to my leopard iOS mac.  Downloaded software for time capsule for snow leapard/leopard but still says I need more software.  What do I need? I have a 10.5.7 iOS (Leopard).  It connects to wifi at speeds in the airport and has plenty of storage capacity and memory.

If your Time Capsule looks like this..
Please review the System Requirements to set up and administer the device.....

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and Airport Utility 6.3 or higher

  • Does time capsule replace my existing router?

I currently have a Linksys 8.11n router.  Will the Time Capsule replace this router, or should I continue to network via the Linksys?

If the linksys is merely a router and plugged into your modem then you can replace it..
If it has the modem inside it,, then no you cannot replace it.

  • Can Time Capsule replace my modem?

I would like to know if time capsule can replace my router? I have a couple of reasons for possibly getting a TC. One reason is to hopefully stream my movies to  my Apple TV2, without the need for powering up my iMac, the other is to use the Airport Express card to extend the reach of my WIFI. I just hoped that my modem wouldn't be required as well.
    Thanks
