Dead Tracks & Icon Previews...

I have a recurring problem with iTunes. I'll get the dreaded "!" indicating iTunes can't find the song file, even though the song file is still there. I've gone through and fixed all the dead tracks, but I'm trying to figure out why this keeps happening.
The one thing I can see is, the files that get the "!" don't show the "icon preview" in the finder. For example if a given album has 5 songs with the "!" and 5 songs that don't have the "!", if I go to the folder for the album in the finder, the 5 songs that have the "!" will not show the album art as the "icon preview" and the 5 that don't have the "!" show the album art as the icon preview.
If I "get info" on one "!" file and one "non-!" file, they both show the preview with the album artwork. The both have the same permissions.
What can be causing this?
Also, is there a way to mass regenerate the icon preview? (not that I think this is going to solve my iTunes dead track issue.)
Using latest OSX & iTunes.
Thanks!

When in doubt, begin by repairing permissions, using the Disc Utility from the Utilities Folder inside your Application Folder.
If that doesn't clear the problem, try using a third party utility like Xupport or Onyx to Reset File Type Settings (similar to the old rebuild desktop command).
Hope this helps.

  • Real Instruments and Master Track icons dessapeared

This is when i open garage band
This happen when i start to used. The Real Istruments and Master Track icons desappeared. What is this happening and how can I fix it?

THis can either mean, that the GarageBand application needs reinstalling or that you have corrupted settings and preferences files in your user account. To find out if something in your user account needs fixing, try to launch GarageBand from a different user account.  You could try to log off and sign  into the Guest account or create a second account for testing using the System Preferences "Users&Groups" pane.
If GarageBand works well using a different account, try HangTime's "oddball probs" fix and trash the GarageBand preferences file - move com.apple.garageband.plist from the Preferences folder in your user library to the Desktop.  See the FAQ:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#oddballprobs
(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
But if it even does not work from a different account, trash GarageBand and reinstall it.

  • Icon previews not showing up in OS X Mavericks

No matter what I switch off and on I cannot get the icon previews to show up for images. My downloads tab in the dock - no icons, just white dotted outlines. Finder windows containing Jpegs, no previews, just blank icons. But new images have icons, and images on the desktop have icon previews...

    As said Carolyn Samit
Might be Finder preferences are corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then delete com.apple.finder.plist file
You don't have to restart, just Log Out... and Log In again

  • Word document icon preview thumbnail is wrong

I can't seem to refresh the icon preview for the word document i'm working on. It has happened to a few documents and even after repairing permissions, shuting down, turning preview on and off, trying to delete icon in 'get info'….. it remains the same.
Not a major problem but I'd like to see the file I'm opening instead of reading the name, it's quicker.

Thanks Chris, I already ran cleaning in Onyx, I've tried deleting again and rebooting, then opening the doc again…but they are still the same… even worse all of the icon previews are corrupted!

  • Icon previews missing on jpegs saved from Safari

This did not happen in Tiger and Safari 2. I always saw the icon preview of any jpegs dragged from a safari window to, say, the desktop ... now, in Leopard, I get the generic Photoshop symbol (jpegs are pref'd to open in PS). I can only get the icon preview of the image if I resave it in PS.
It's little thing but, it's frustrating as jpegs from the web usually have generic file names, so the preview comes in very handy for me. Yes, my view options are pref'd for icon preview. Thanks for your hep.

    Hi Tim
I'm curious why dragging an image from the web to your desktop creates a jpg file with a Photoshop icon. OS X natively assigns this action to Preview. Either you previously changed the jpeg "open with" assignment in either in Leopard or prior to Photoshop, or a 3rd party application did it for you?
As I posted, if I drag an image from Safari to the desktop, the image icon appears rather than a generic icon. Here's the image file appearing on my desktop:
Here's a screenshot of that file on the desktop:
If I open the info panel to that file, this is what I see:
When you open the info panel, do you see an image in the Preview section or a generic icon?

  • Icon Preview Problem in Finder

    Hi,
I've had my new MacBook for about a month now, and as my photo collection has grown I'm starting to notice that while using CoverFlow (which I have as the default view for most of my folders), there are always some icons that appear as a generic JPEG icon instead of having the image preview. This problem goes away (all icons have previews) once I open the same folder again or refresh it somehow (for example by selecting Calculate All Sizes in View Options). However, once I restart/log in again, it happens again. Most of the images are normal JPG's from the web, and which ones have missing previews is completely random. This applies to all of my folders, and I've seen the same thing on several other Macs as well (the family iMac and several others in Apple Stores). This only appears in CoverFlow view, though.
Here are a couple of screenshots to illustrate the problem:
    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/Octavarius/Screenshot-IconsinFinder.jpg
    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/Octavarius/Screenshot-IconsinFinder2.jpg
Does anyone else also experience this issue? Is it a common issue? The Show Icon Preview option is checked, by the way.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Jacob

Keep in mind that it's the icons below the Cover Flow section that are the problem. The blurry photos in the Cover Flow section on the first screenshot have very small resolution, that's why they're blurry, but if you look in the second pic, you'll see some others that are completely sharp. Just in case you misunderstood.
I do sometimes get blurry pictures in the Cover Flow section, just after they're downloaded, but once I log out and back in, they're fine and stay that way.
Once I click Get Info on an icon that's missing the preview it's immediately refreshed and the preview is there again, as it should be. It seems like Finder is sometimes skipping certain previews the first time you open a folder since log in.
What did you mean by custom icon? How do you set/delete one?

  • Icon Preview - Turn off for all system instead of just folders?

I hate the icon preview. I prefer the traditional icon placeholder.
You can go to "show view options," but it only gets rid of it for that folder.
Anyway to get rid of it across the entire system? Thanks.

You also need to click the button at the bottom "Use as Defaults"--I noticed it tends to be greyed out when I first open a Finder window, and I need to make some change to get it to be active again. I just now changed the option in List view to have it stop drawing custom thumbs for all folders in List view, and I had to first uncheck the "Always open..." box at the top for the folder I had open, then I could click the Defaults button at the bottom. Of course, we'll see what happens when I restart....

  • Icon previews wont show for some mp3 files

For some reason I have about 30 albums (out of around 1000...which isn't too bad of a ratio) that wont show the album art for the icon preview. Instead it shows an image of an old iTunes logo, I can't remember which version of iTunes, but it's the version that has a green note on top of the disc. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks.

Do you have an album specified for the mp3 song. I've noticed that if I only have a couple of songs for an artist and none has the album specified, they don't always show up. If I add the album, they will sync the next time. Hope this helps.

  • Disable / Turn off Thumbnail / Icon Preview in Finder?

Can't find any new/recent posts to solve this issue. I want to disable/turn-off the little icon preview in finder.
I have to access a lot of images on a server at work. Image files(jpeg, eps, tiff, psd, ai, ect) that are typically 50MB and higher. So you can only imagine the amount of lag I get and the time I waste every time I click on a folder in list view.
Is there any way to disable it? Just have it show a standard icon file type instead of it loading 100+ 8MB images in little tiny icons?
I've already tried the View -> Show View Options -> unchecked 'Show icon preview' and applied it as 'Use as default'
Its turn off for all folders but it is still loading the mini icon preview.
(I'm on a Mac Pro - Mountain Lion)

I've tried reinstalling Mavericks and I'm still having this issue. I'm considering wiping my drive and going back to Mountain lion. Qucktime player in Mavericks seems to suck. I'm having several other issues playing back older quictime files. Most play in Quicktime 7 but a lot have no quicklook previews. The sheer volume of prores files I shoot makes this extremely inconvenient for me. How can Apple not support their own Codec????

  • Icon Preview in Finder Replace Application Icons, Which Apps Will Now Open?

If you're a graphic designer like myself who uses multiple image programs it was extremely easy to see which app was used for each file... A Photoshop document displayed the Photoshop icon, a Preview document displayed the Preview icon etc. etc.
... But now alI I see are tiny previews of every document, which may be great for certain circumstances, but now I have the problem of Select All and Open... but various apps open all at once if they related to multiple apps. If I knew which documents were opened by what it would help me to determine whether a quick snap at Command-A along with Command-O would suit me. Currently it now doesn't as I don't wish for perhaps more than one app to open, AND dragging to the dock and hovering to open an app is a pain, too.
    So, any suggestions?

I bet you're talking about column view. If you are, open a window in column view, select Show View Options (Command-J), and uncheck the box for icon preview.
There are different view options depending on whether you're in icon view, column view, list view, etc. Icon Preview is great in icon view, but not so useful in the other views.

  • Icon Preview In Finder Not Working Properly

Ever since upgrading to Lion I've had the issue of icon preview not working properly in finder. This mostly occurs with movie files such as .wmv files. Some take a long time to show a preview and some don't even show a preview. In Snow Leopard this was never an issue.
This also seems to happen in stacks as well. I'll get a greyed out box with a dsah borded. Seems as though it's the large files that do this.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I'm experiencing the same thing but with all kinds of files that have shown a preview in snow leopard: pictures, PDF-documents, music (with album art). It seems that previews are not created automatically whenever I change the name of a file or edit it in any other way, the preview shows up instantly. Rebooting works, too.
This is really annoying and a little online search shows, several people are having the same problem. As far as I know, there's no fix yet.

  • Show icon preview in finder problem

the other day when i was using the cover flow in finder to go through old photos finder stopped showing the icon previews for all my photos. toggling the option to show the icon preview doesn't seem to be doing, any idea what might've happened?

    2point5 wrote:
If I can hazard a guess it's possibly a memory availability issue given that it has to generate a thumbnail of the images on the fly and may be struggling as you navigate through more and more images.
I've had this same problem for a long time. I thought it must be either a memory or free disk space availability issue because in my case it appears to be brought on by Photoshop CS3. After i use Photoshop for a little while, new icon previews stop being generated entirely, as if they've been switched off.
I now have 7 GB of RAM, with Photoshop capped at 72%. I've tried reducing that percentage and i've moved all Photoshop scratch files to other drives with no change.
I used to be short of disk space on my main drive and i thought it might be a virtual memory issue. But i currently have 32 GB available.
*I bring previews back by using Force Quit to relaunch the Finder.*
Then i have to move all the Finder windows back to the "Spaces" i had them in. 10 minutes later they're gone again.

  • Weird track icon appearing in Logic 9

A weird track icon has appeared in my version of Logic 9. It's on several tracks in a current project and I don't know what it is or how it got there (I can't see it in Logic's chart of track icons anyway, and I've certainly not imported any). If I had a Windows PC I'd suspect a virus or something, but I'm assured by a 'Mac genius' in my local Apple Store that I can't possibly have such a thing.
The icon has two elements which look like characters from some '80s computer game, both orange in colour. One looks like two hard drives stacked one on top of the other; the other is in the shape of a downward-pointing arrowhead or fountain pen nib. The background is black. I'd attach an image if I could see how you do that on this web page!
Can anyone give me information on what's happened here? Thanks very much.

    It's this icon:
    file:///Applications/Logic%20Pro.app/Contents/Resources/Images/LegacyIcons/47.pn g
(paste that into the address bar of your web browser and hit return to open it; it's a local file on your machine, within the Logic bundle)
Logic just assigned one of its legacy icons to the track for whatever reason.
    Don't worry about it.
If it bothers you, select another icon and move on.

  • Icon Preview is not shown for mp3 files in finder

Hi. Recently I noticed icons of mp3 files are no longer as used to be in finder. Previously I had a dark music note icon and when i hover my mouse there was a play button. Now I only see itunes icon in mp3 files. "Show Icon Preview" option is enabled, and i can preview image and pdf files in finder. But something happened to the mp3 files. It is very annoying. Please guide me to get back the good old icon preview for mp3 files.

Displaying icons as previews of files
In Finder windows and on the desktop, the icons for files can appear as thumbnail previews of the file contents. For example, instead of seeing a generic icon for a PDF file, you can see a miniature version of what’s in the PDF file. If you “hover” over the icon for a movie or sound file, you’ll see a Play button, which you can click to view the movie or hear the sound. (If you don’t see a Play button, enlarge the icon.)
NOTE:If you’re using Cover Flow view, you’re already previewing files and don’t need to change any settings.
    To display icons as previews:
To work with icons in a Finder window, click the Finder icon in the Dock.To work with icons on the desktop (the background area of your screen), click the desktop.
If you’re working with icons in a Finder window, click one of the View buttons in the toolbar to select icon, list, or column view.
Choose View > Show View Options.
    Select “Show icon preview.”
If you’re working in a Finder window, you can also set the following options, depending on which view you’re using:
In Icon view: Use the “Icon size” slider to adjust the size of the preview image.
In List view: Click one of the two “Icon size” buttons.
In Column view: To see a larger preview in the adjacent column, select “Show preview column.”
NOTE:The Finder may not be able to show a preview for some files.
Another way to get a quick preview is to select one or more images, and then click the Quick Look (eye) button in the Finder window toolbar, or press the Space bar.
