Dead USB flash drive?

I've here a USB flash drive, 4 GB, and it's dead. Disk Utility does not see it, nor does the Finder. Only System Profiler detects a USB peripheral. Is there a way to recover this drive?

Is there a way to test ti on another computer to make sure it's dead? If indeed it is dead and it's not the port, or just the system not registering the connection, there is no way to fix them. If you can't see it, you can't try putting a file in it. Therefore, the only way to test it would be on another computer. Don't throw it away, I have never seen one die, they have no moving parts. Have you changed the settings or upgraded your computer lately? iTunes is a good place to test it if it will show up, if not, it's really difficult to say?

  • Clean Install: from Recovery Disk vs. from USB Flash Drive

Planning to do a clean install on my MBP running Yosemite. Have come across two ways of doing this: From the Recovery Disk or from a USB Flash Drive.
If the clean install can be done by using the Recovery Disk, why would you do one using a USB drive?
Is there any benefit to the USB drive method? Basically I want to know if one way is preferable over the other.
I want to make sure I wipe everything, as my machine's been slow/glitchy since OS X Yosemite was first installed/updated; I'm also not sure if I have picked up anything else along the way. (I'm pretty careful with my browsing/downloading, but I like to be sure.)
    Thanks for any help.

The advantage of the USB drive is that you do not need an Internet connection.  If you do not have a solid Internet connection or the Apple servers are down, you may be dead in the water.  The only possible advantage of using the recovery option is that the latest version of the given OSX will be available. That may not be the same as what is installed on the USB drive.
Before you use either option, make certain that you have your data backed up.

  • LG USB Flash Drive Problem

I have an LG 1GB USB Flash Drive, which has worked flawlessly for the last year or so. All of a sudden, just recently, it always takes two tries for it to mount. In other words, when it's inserted the first time it doesn't mount, but remove it and insert it again, and it mounts! I've reformatted it (Mac OS Extended), but it didn't help. I've also tried it on two other Macs, and it's the same thing. Any suggestions?

    Hi anybody,
I have a similar problem with a flash drive. I was just using it on a PC, properly disconnected it from there and then plugged it into a USB hub I have on my Mac. Now it's dead. No light on the flash drive, no drive recognition in system profiler or disk utility and it's also dead on PCs now too. If I could format it that would be one thing but nothing recognizes it now. The files on there weren't life or death but I'd like to get them back AND not have to just throw away the flash drive.
    Ideas??

  • MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) problem booting from USB flash drive

    Hi, all!
I was wondering if someone can help me. I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 on my 320GB HDD that is connected to my MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) mobo (The CPU is a Core2Duo 6600 with 6GB of RAM). I created a bootable USB 8GB flash drive using Microsoft's "Windows 7 DVD USB Download Tool" and bootsect.exe (Needed to create a boot sector on the USB drive) from the MS store. I successfully tested the resulting bootable USB drive using freeware MobaLiveCD (Sorry, you'll have to Google "mobalivecd" since this forum doesn't seem to allow external links) running under Windows XP SP3 x86 (32bit). Under MobaLive's QEMU, Windows 7 setup loaded its files and produced an error message basically saying that it could not install Windows 7 x64 under an x86 OS (No surprise there since QEMU is emulating a 32bit processor - The point is that the bootable USB drive I created works).
I then went into my mobo's CMOS and under Advanced BIOS Features -> Boot Sequence -> 1st Boot Device, set the value to "USB-HDD" and rebooted my machine. The USB drive probably was not detected by the mobo under that setting because it proceeded to boot from my HDD which is the 2nd Boot Device. I repeated the same process using each one of the  four USB ports in the rear of the mobo (I don't have the optional USB panel that the MSI users manual mentions) to no avail. I also tried setting the 1st Boot Device to "USB-FDD" and repeated the process for each USB port but the mobo still will not boot from the USB drive (It does not recognize it). When I set the 1st Boot Device to "USB-ZIP" and rebooted, the mobo hangs after "Verifying DMI Pool Data ..." which is no surprise since I am not using a USB ZIP drive but a USB flash drive. It appears that under that setting, it recognizes that there is a USB device attached but it is expecting a response (From a USB ZIP drive). I had no idea it would be this frustrating to boot from a USB flash drive! If anyone knows how to make this mobo boot from a USB flash drive, please let me know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The P965 Neo motherboard is 8 years old, so don't expect miracles. .... You need to format the USB stick in the proper way. You may use this utility to do it: hxxp://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/ Also, it's a good idea to use the first (USB0) connector (controlled by Intel ICH8) for the USB flash drive. Good luck.
Thank You for your fast response, RemusM!
I'm not looking for a miracle. I'm just looking for a mobo that does what it is supposed to do: Allow me to boot from a USB flash drive (I don't think that is too much to ask for even from a board that was made in 2006)!
Thanks for recommending FlashBoot. I see under their "Why FlashBoot" section that it "... does not shift to user the burden of choice between "USB-ZIP" and "USB-HDD" at format time and proper BIOS setup at boot time. ... and every USB disk is formatted in such way that it will work in every environment properly, regardless of current BIOS setting.", so I will give it a try and let you know about the results afterwards.

  • Efi update via usb flash drive?

I would like to know if there is a way to perform an efi update via a usb flash drive?

tried the latest 2010 build, got the same problem: 'missing operating system' and again in ubuntu the flash drive is an unknown filesystem.
tried again on a different computer and got the same error.. how frustrating!
edit: just to clarify i used the following command 'sudo dd if=path/to/image.img of=/path/to/device' i also changed directory to where the image file is and tried again without absolute referencing the path for 'if=' both of which returned that the command had been completed successfully in terminal.
edit: tried using again with a different USB stick (Maxell 4GB), again terminal returned 'x amount of files successfully copied to sdc1'.
.. something different happened this time, i didn't get the same error as before, instead the text 'grub' appears with a blinking cursor. nothing else.

  • Move a big file from a mac system to a windows 8 laptop usb usb flash drive

Hello i am using a 32 gb flash drive to copy a 10gb file from mac os x to my flash drive. Then i want to insert that flash drive to my windows 8 pc and store it there.
I cant use a network connection to transfer files because i dont have a ethernet cable or an network connection yet. So i must use a smart procedure for making my mac communicate with my pc at home. I cant use any other types of sharing methods except for a usb flash drive. So i know that the mac cannot detect NTFS filesystems and i cant use FAT32 even though mac recognizes it because FAT 32 is unable to store large files abotu 10GB of size. Now i have to use i think ext3 or ext4 or also HFS but when i successfully copy the file from mac to flash drive then insert it into my pc, the windows 8 OS will not detect the windows pc because i dont think windows is made to detect these filesystems by default.
So i have tried using, HFS explorer and ext2/ext3/ext4 volume manager and ext2exploer or GPARTED live cd's latest version's copy and paste functions but they seem to not work propely and there is a problem, i cannot  see any flash drive in HFS explorer even though my drive is formatted as hfs.
So i need a program that can detect HFS or ext3/4 formatted flash drives and is able to copy a file from there straight to my windows 8 NTFS hard drive or a folder in it.
I have checked my firewall settings and defense settings. I am the administrator of my pc and i have even removed the windows password and the mac one but still i get lots of issus JUST to copy a file between a pc and a mac. Remmember that i have to copy files FROM a mac system running snow leopard to my windows 8 pc not the OTHER WAY were i have to copy from the windows to a mac.
Please tell me as much as possable about software out there and tell me software that costs money. I am able to buy any good software for doing this.
    Thanks in advance.

Take the flash drive to the PC and format it as exFAT.

  • Follow up question on recovery data on USB flash drive

HP instructions say the 32 GB flash drive should NOT be branded as Windows 8 compatible.   I bought a Sandisk 32 GB yesterday for  $20 on sale,   but it says on the back it is compatible.
Other more/or less expensive  flash drives did not address whether compatible with Windows 8.
    I have  Windows 8.1
Thanks in advance for your help...

    Hi,
If the flash drive is listed as 'Windows 8 compatible' it cannot be used - the reason is because the HP Recovery Media creation software looks for an external device and flash drives marked Win 8 compatible show as internal drives.
In the example below, the 32 Gb usb flash drive 'Dave G' shows as an internal drive which cannot be used, while the usb flash drive 'Removable Disk H' would work.

  • How Can I Back Up My iTunes Library To A USB Flash Drive?

I have around 5GB of files in my iTunes Library and I don't want to have to use multiple blank cds (dvds) to get my files onto my new iMac. On top of that I can't my cd-writer doesn't work. So I bought an 8GB USB Flash Drive and I just want to know how I can get my iTunes Library to back up to my USB Flash Drive.

Is all your music, as well as your iTunes folder, in My Music? If so, copy your My Music folder to the drive. That will back up all the songs, and the iTunes library files, which happen to be located in iTunes/iTunesMusic.
In case you are asking how to copy: Close iTunes. Insert the USB drive into the machine and open it like a folder. Then you can use drag and drop to put stuff in it.

  • How do I browse & play .mp3 files from a USB flash drive using Labview 8.0?

I'm a tester & want to test USB flash drives connected to PC.
I want to browse the file system & playback the audio files, .jpeg files etc in the USB drive. I've Labview 8.0. When I searched for some examples or VIs which can detect the USB flash drive, couldn't find any. So if you could point me in the right direction, I can find a solution to my problem.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You probably won't find specific examples for this.  A USB flash drive is mounted by the OS and appears as a new memory storage device to all software on the PC, including LabVIEW.  You can certainly write a LabVIEW program to open files on the stick and play/run them but I would create a VI that wrote files to the stick and then read them back and checked them for bit-level errors.  Keep in mind that your OS might be doing parity checking under the hood which would make your test rather meaningless.
BTW, testing memory by looking at pics or listening to MP3s would be useless of course.  A human can't see or hear bit-level errors in a high bandwidth data stream.

  • As a new MacBook user I plug in my USB Flash Drive but don't know how to access its contents. Please help. Thanks.

as a new MacBook user, when inserting my USB Flash Drive, I do not know how to access its contents. Please help. Thanks.

Open a new Finder window, Finder > File > New Finder Window, and it should appear on the left under Devices.
If you don't see it there, or to get it to show up on the Desktop: Finder > Preferences... General tab, check External disks to have it show on the Desktop,  Or Sidebar tab, check External disks under DEVICES.

  • After I installed Lion, my MacBook Pro can no longer detect my external hard drives or my USB flash drives. What should I do?

After I installed Lion, my MacBook Pro can no longer detect my external hard drives or my USB flash drives. What should I do?

And me -- My Mac at work running Snow Leopard reads the drive normally. My home Mac (on Lion) can't even find it....
    Yet another Leo let-down.....

  • USB Flash Drive no longer shows on Desktop, it does appear in disk utility. I recently upgraded to 10.8 from 10.6 on both iMac and Macbook and the drive does the same on both.

I updated my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have had only minor issues with some software but I plugged in a USB flash drive and went to format it, it now appears only in disk utility and not on the desktop. I have tried restarting and reseting with the drive in and out, I tried it into my macbook and it does exactly the same there. I can't do anything in Disk Utility so can't access it in any way and it says errors if I try to eject it from DU. I'm not normally stumped but I can't figure this out at all. I'm hoping that someone here could give me an idea that I haven't thought of as it's a large Flash Drive and I really would like to keep using it.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

If it has the same (bad) behavior on two different systems then there is a very good chance that the  drive is toast.
BTW you'll get better response to your questions if the question actually reflects the problem you are having. In this case it would have been better to say you couldn't access the drive rather then that it doesn't show on the desktop.
    regards

  • USB flash drive not recognized by Macbook Leopard 15.1

    Hi
Until last week my macbook was able to recognize my USB flash drives and my IPOD in Itunes and also as an independant drive.
Last week it started to give trouble. It simply does not recognizes any USB flash drives I plug in as well as my IPOD music into Itunes.
This is very strange since it is recognizing the HP all in one. It scans and prints. I purchased this HP all in one last week and installed the software for it. I am not sure how this could have affected that I cannot mount any USB drives.
    Can you please help? Anyone?
    Thanks.

Can you see the devices if you use Utilities/Disk Utility? Maybe you need to reformat them. Take care, reformatting will lose the data on the device.
