Dead usb port in airport extreme

I have been using the airport extreme for quite a while but it seems that my usb port is not working anymore since my external drive (connected via usb) was suddenly disconnected.
I don't see the drive recognized anymore in the airport extreme settings. I was trying two other drives and those were also not recognized. I'm sure that the drive are OK because I am able to connect those via usb on other laptops.
What could be wrong? When I plug in my Freecom Tough Drive the blue light of the drive is switched on for short while before it turns of without any connection to the airport. Resetting the airport didn't help as well. I have not changed the firmware or run any updates...It seems that I have to return the device or can I try some other things?
Please advice.

It is entirely possible to have a dead port. What have you done to verify? If you plug into all the other ports and the unit is recognized through Airport Utility, but not the one suspected, that's a good indication. Also plug into each port one-by-one and look for the green light to show on the port connector. If it doesn't show on the suspect port, that's more support of indicating a dead port. You can also unplug the power to the unit, then plug it back in, watching for the port light on the suspect connector to flash green along with all the others. The lack of a green light is not a certain indicator, but almost so. Probably a warranty issue.

  • Can't get USB drive to work in USB port on airport extreme

I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro and a airport extreme 110/100/1000. My first apple computer. I wanted to use the airport to connect a WD My Book hard drive and my printer so that the Mac and my windows computers would be able to access them.
As many have reported I had trouble making it work. I could not get the Mac to access the hard drive thru the airport although it would when hook up directly.
First Apple needs to say very clearly that the drive must be formatted FAT32. There is some disagreement whether the drive can be partitioned.
Anyway after spending hours trying to use my hard drive I started searching the internet. I found a program that could be downloaded on the WD website that would reformat the hard drive back to FAT32 from NTFS very quickly. After doing so, the hard drive mounted and worked perfectly and had over 232GB available (not 32 like it would be if formatted on a older Windows computer.
The drive must be FAT32 and will definitely work if not partitioned.
Apple really needs to have much better documentation on the whole process, especially for those like me who are PC guys and are not familiar with the terminology. Hope this helps.

I am new at this. I guess I did not want to ask a question but rather to offer an answer.

  • Can't print from Win2000 to USB printer via Airport Extreme

Background: I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 printer connected by USB to an Airport Extreme base station. My iMac is connected to the base station via an ethernet cable.
Using Bonjour for Windows 1.0.3, I've set up the Epson printer to print from Win2000 in a virtual machine in VirtualPC 6 which is running in the iMac. The setup process for the printer completed OK, without a hitch. (By the way, I loaded the printer driver from the printer's disk, because the driver for the Epson Stylus Photo 820 isn't one of the drivers selectable from the Bonjour window.)
Problem: When I try to print via the route that I set up using Bonjour, an error message appears, stating:
    - There was an error found when printing the document "mhtml.mid://00000047/" to IP-extreme986254.local.9100"\
(Note: extreme986254 is the name of the network I configured in the base station. Otherwise, the network is working OK. Also, my Win2000 in VPC is connected to the internet OK.)
When I re-try printing, I get the same error message.
When I hook the printer directly to the iMac by USB and then set it up as a printer for Win2000 in that configuration, I have no trouble printing to the printer.

    Hi gingerjedi,
It's normal with your actual Airport and confirm by Apple, but ...
Only If you see your printer in Airport Admin Utility under Printer :
    1) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/foomatic-rip-2008-01-30. dmg
    2) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/gplgs-8.61-ub.dmg
    3) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/hpijs-2.7.10-UB.dmg
    4) Repair permissions with Onyx or with your Install Disk
    5) Restart your computer
    6) Restart your connection with your Printer (Cable-Power-Connection with your Airport)
    7) In Prefs Panes, select Printer ( + ) and install a new Printer
    8) Select your indicated Printer in the menu choice. If you have a Name for your Airport, give this Name under Place or Emplacement (excuse, i am French) and select HP Deskjet D2400 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended).
    9) And click Done
With this Solution, you can just print. All other software possibilities can not run under the Airport. It is normal.
I think all is ok for you.

There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Need help with opening ports on airport extreme

My vonage phone is connected to airport extreme router, voice quality of phone calls was poor. Vonage tech support says   vonage port on my airport extreme was closed and i need to open it.
Here is my chat details with vonage tech support-
The following ports are needed for Internet communication between the Vonage adapters and the Vonage servers.
    SIP: Port 5061 UDP
RTP (Voice) Traffic: Ports 10000-20000 UDP. When a call is made, a random port between 10000 and 20000 is used for RTP (Voice) traffic. If any of these ports are blocked, you may experience one way or no audio.
Please do suggest me the way to open the ports on airport extreme
    Thanks
    Venki

Instructions for opening ports is here.

You should be fine opening the whole range, 10000-20000

  • Printing to a USB printer via Airport Extreme

I recently purchased an Airport Extreme and connected it to an ADSL router using ethernet. The router is then connected to my company network (PC, Windows, hubs etc). On the AE USB port, I also connected a Sansumg ML-1710P printer which works fine if I connect it directly to my Macbook.
I can add the printer (bonjour) but when I order it to print, the job with start and then just stop and the status indicated "error".
Did try several suggestion from this discussion including using the 10.4.7 combo update, update the CPUS to 1.2.1, connect/disconnect, download new driver without success.
    Anyone has any suggestion? Thanks.

Normaly this connection the way you describe it won't work.
The Airport Extreme Base Station is a Router as well
It is normaly done from the Internet Service Providers Modem with an ethernet cable to the Airport Extreme Base connected to the little cicle of dots on the back. It is set to distribute IP's and DCHP and then the arrows pointing away from one another is then cabled to the other Router and then plug in the printer to the Airport Extreme's USB and the other computers to the ethernet port on the 2nd Router, and it must be set NOT TO DISTRIBUTE IP'S

  • How do I use more than one USB device with Airport Extreme?

I would like to plug a shared hard drive into my new airport extreme and still be able to plug in a shared printer as well. How am I supposed to do this with only one USB port. Do I use a USB hub???
Is it possible to connect a hard drive using one of the ethernet ports?

To use multiple USB devices you would use a powered USB hub.
You can connect a hard drive to one of the Ethernet ports providing the hard drive is a NAS and supports Ethernet connections. In that situation the NAS hard drive is just like any other Ethernet client and the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not handle the file sharing services. The drive itself would provide the file sharing services.

  • How do I Setup USB HDD on Airport EXTREME TIME CAPSULE? USB HDD Not showing up

How can I get the HDD to work with my airport extreme?  Does it need formatted a specific way for mac?  Are there certain hdd types that work best with the I have a WD usb hard drive which doesn't show up when connected to airport extreme.  I'm trying to setup time capsule, but Having no luck.  I'm new to the Imac.
    Message was edited by: clower80

    A couple of pointers.
The hard drive must be specifically formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work with the AirPort Extreme's USB port. Check the documentation that came with the drive to find out how it is formatted at the present time.....it is likely formatted to work with Windows, which is not compatible with the AirPort Extreme.
Unfortunately, even if the drive is formatted correctly, Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so that will be the next hurdle to deal with.
Some users actually do seem to be able to make this work, but overall, it is not a reliable method to backup your data if it is important to you.

  • I cannot print from windows xp to a usb printer using airport extreme v5

I just bought the new airport Extreme, loaded Bonjour on a lenovo t400 running win xp sp3.
I can print with the printer plugged in to the computer but cannot print using the bonjour setup.   I can print from my Imac connected to the airport extreme (hard wired) and wirelessly from my macbook.
I have no issues connecting to the web through the Airport Extreme with the PC.
I have all the proper drivers installed.
the Printer in question is a lexmark P910 Series and the drivers loaded with bonjour.
Any thoughts on why I cannot print using the PC?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the  AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at thisiFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link. If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help: Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsule
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if your printer is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • Can't read external HD connected directly to computer but reads fine when connected to the USB on my airport extreme.

I bought an external G-Technology 8TB HD to hook up to the back of my AirPort Extreme to use as wireless external storage and to back up my family's Macs. In the beginning I could unplug the HD and plug it directly into my computer and it worked just fine. Now, when I plug it into any computer, the HD won't mount automatically and the light on the HD just blinks rapidly.
When I go into Disk Utility it see's the HD but does not read anything and simply says it is empty. I verify the HD and it says to repair. When I repair the HD it says that I must backup HD and reformat disk. So, I unplug and plug into the back of my router and it works just fine.
Is there a way I can make my computer read the HD without reformatting because I do not want my fancy HD connected to my routers USB 2.0 port anymore? Is this a glitch in OSX mavericks?

I believe this Airport update, released in the spring (2008) did enable AirDisk usage with Airport Extreme wireless devices:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/timemachineandairportupdatesv10.html
MacWorld: Update allows Time Machine backups on AirPort Extreme
    http://www.macworld.com/article/132613/2008/03/airporttime.html
Unfortunately, it is Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) only, and I see form your stats that you are still on Tiger (10.4).
It will be interesting if Tadd's tip works though. Let us know.
    Cheers!

  • BigPond USB Modem and Airport Extreme 802.11n

Judging by the information I have found I do not think this is possible, but thought worth asking regardless.
I have a Telstra BigPond Wireless USB Modem (7.2) - is it possible to plug this into my AE base station to share with other devices?
    Thanks
    tkoe

If you are thinking about a plain USB-to-Ethernet adapter (the kind used to get Ethernet from a computer's USB 2.0 port), it is not going to work.
It may work if you can find a special device similar to this one, providing that the adapter manufacturer can guarantee support for the exact mobile broadband USB modem and network that you are using. If so, it should be possible to connect the Ethernet output of the adapter to the WAN port of the AirPort Extreme base station. I should add that I have not tested this.
Another way of handling a situation like this is to use a dedicated mobile broadband router with support for the USB modem/network in question (basically, something like these exemples). Telstra/BigPond may be able to suggest something suitable.

  • Fitting drive from dead TC into latest AirPort Extreme

I See that the latest AirPort Extreme is the same design as the time capsule and on tear down it shows the empty hard drive bay. My 2012 time capsule has died but the drive is fine so I wondered if I could put it in an AirPort Extreme which wouldn't cost me so much? Any experts out there who can answer this?
    MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The Extreme has no hdd fittings.. so if you put the hdd into the extreme you would also need to solder on a surface mount connector.. and obtain the correct cables.. which are non-standard. ie no shop or internet site has the cable you need. So this is fundamentally a hack job beyond the hackers dreams.
Sadly death of the Gen4 hardware is very hard to fix.
If you have a dead Gen4 carcass why not have a go at reflowing the solder.
    I gave some instructions here.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/gen4-a1409-issues
I have no long term info on if the repair is successful.. It will take a few more goes and a few more successes and a year or two of operation to know if the problem has been solved. I would have pursued Apple to replace it, via purchase of an item on which you could extend warranty via applecare like the Apple TV as I suggested.
If you want to use the hard disk in a TC.. the Gen3 is more reliable. It is the same board as the Gen4 with a somewhat poorer wireless card. You can often pick up second hand Gen3 very cheap.. and use the hard disk in that. The speed over network of Gen3 is same as Gen4 and not that different to Gen5.
Or do what most people do and simply buy a USB holder and use the hard disk in that. You can buy cheap holders for a few dollars from stores like OWC.

  • Using an External USB soundcard with Airport Extreme Base Station

Hello, I own a macbook, an airport extreme base station and a Native Instruments Audio Kontrol 1 USB 2.0 external sound card that works like a charm with my macbook. I have a printer and a hard drive connected to the USB from the Airport base station through a hub, and I was wondering if there is any way I could make my macbook recognize the external sound card when connected to the base station's USB port. I would like to be able to play music wirelessly through the base station but the application/driver from Native Instruments does not recognize the sound card plugged to the router.
    Thank you

if there is any way I could make my macbook recognize the external sound card when connected to the base station's USB port
