People answering the posts are not the only ones reading them, so it would not be a waste. If I was thinking the same thing, and I searched the forum, this information could assist me. No matter how you want to word it, asking someone to do that is a violation. Helpful posts and correct answers both get points. I was just trying to tell you about the violation before moderators do. If it is a 3GS you cannot update it to 4.3, you can only update it to iOS 6. Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer, connect the phone, click on its name on the left, then click the "Check for Updates" button on the right.
If you can't connect to your home WiFi try rebooting the router.

If it won't talk at all to iTunes, you can hold down the power and home button for 10 seconds, it will power off, this is ok, then let go of the power button while holding the home button until iTunes sees it as a device in recovery mode. You can try to reinstall iOS7 and then restore.

If you really have iphone 3gs, then you can update it further.
If you have an iphone 3g, then you cannot.

iTunes notifies me that iOS 4.2 update is available for my iPhone 4.
I'm on my MacBook Pro, with iPhone 4, iOS 4.1 (8B117), iTunes 10.1 (54), Mac OS 10.6.5.
I select either 'download' or 'download and update' and get the following error message:
*There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "_ iPhone". You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.*
I have run *repair permissions*, rebooted the computer multiple times. I have 22Mbit Internet with a 120GB download limit with 90GB remaining.
Does anyone know what causes this arcane error? Surely the error indicates that there is a directory, most likely in ~/Library or /Library that has incorrect permissions, obviously +repair permissions+ hasn't fixed it. Does anyone know where iTunes stores its downloaded updates?

I fired up my G5 MacPro and was able to update the phone, I was also then able to determine the download location for iTunes iPhone updates which is
~/Library/iTunes
When I saw that I also noted that the permissions on that directory was Read/Write for System only, I added Read/Write permissions for Staff and then the download was able to happen.
Apple needs to amend the Repair Permissions programme in Disk Utility to ensure that the above directory ( ~/Library/iTunes ) is Read/Write for Staff or users won't be able to carry out iPhone updates.
I haven't had a chance to try the new printing features, however, my Bluetooth headset performance is dramatically improved with the iOS 4.2.1 update.

Apple only supports updating to the latest iOS available for the device. For the 3GS, 4, 4S and 5 that is iOS 6.1.2.

I removed most of the music from my iPhone 4s to free up space for the iOS 7 update. Now my old PC, which doesn't have an Internet connection but contains my entire iTunes library, won't recognize my iPhone. It says I must have newer version of iTunes, but without Internet access, I CAN'T update iTunes. Any ideas how I can get my music from my old version of iTunes to my updated iPhone?

I have just acquired an iPhone but none of the apps I am interested in will run on the installed iOS 4.2.1 installed. The model number is A1241, 8GB.
I read the Apple support article (HT4972 and HT4623), which says to use iTunes to update iOS 4 to iOS 5 or later, but the instructions on how to do this are so terse as to be useless. I have been thru' Settings/General, but there is no Software Update button in there, and I can't find any software update button in any other menu. How does a normal mortal manage to update iOS! It doesn't help that this forum pulldown below doesn't list the Version 4.2.1 (8C148) that is shown in the General/About/Version path...
