Deal-breakers for real use of Solaris 11 Express
I run Solaris 10 U9 for my home 12TB NAS box - based on Supermicro H8SSL-i2 motherboard (ServerWorks HT1000 Chipset and Dual-port Broadcom BCM5704C) and their 8-port SATA2 PCI-X card (AOC-SAT2-MV8). It's a great (but aging) platform and a rock solid OS with the unbeatable ZFS volume manager/filesystem.
However, despite my willingness to run Solaris 11 Express in this role, I can't because of these deal-breakers:
1) Lack of a full-featured installer that allows me to lay out or preserve existing partitions the way I want. Making /var a separate file system is a must. Ideally, I'd be able to run multiple versions of Solaris on the same box by customizing grub, and use my ZPOOLs on either Solaris 10 or 11 Express while I learn the new OS.
2) Lack of support for the Broadcom BCM5704C dual-port gigabit NIC (and others), which work wonderfully under Solaris 10, but are badly broken under Solaris 11 Express. I know I could disable the on-board Broadcom NICs and go buy an Intel card - but why the need for this? Won't there be a fix for Broadcom NICs?
3) Lack of support for modern, generic, server-class motherboards and PCI-e multi-port SATA/SAS cards. I wonder about the future for Solaris without support for modern, affordable x64 server hardware.
Maybe I'm missing the point and Solaris 11 Express is only intended to be run as a virtual machine under VBox or VMware. But it would sure be nice to be able to run it on my real hardware - even if it is just a small hobbyist rig. Any suggestions?
Regards,
Mike
In Solaris 11, you get a separate /var by default. If you update from Solaris 11 Express to Solaris 11, this transition doesn't happen automatically. If you decide to tackle it on your own, you need to be sure that it is done in a way that beadm, pkg, and other consumers of libbe will handle properly. I would recommend something along the lines of the following. This is untested and may break your system - prove it out somewhere unimportant first.
Do the work in a new boot environment so you reduce the likelihood that you will break things in an unrecoverable way.
# beadm create sepvar
# beadm mount sepvar /mntFigure out the name of the root dataset of the new boot environment, then create a var dataset as a child of that.
# rootds=$(zfs list -H -o name /mnt)
# zfs create -o mountpoint=/var -o canmount=noauto $rootds/varMount this new /var and migrate data
# mkdir /tmp/newvar
# zfs mount -o mountpoint=/tmp/newvar $rootds/var
# cd /mnt/var
# mv $(ls -A) /tmp/newvarUnmount, remount
# umount /tmp/newvar
# beadm unmount sepvar
# beadm mount sepvar /mntAt this point /mnt/var should be a separate dataset than /mnt. The contents of /mnt/var should look just like the contents of /var, aside from transient data that has changed while you were doing this. Assuming that is the case, you should be ready to activate and boot the new boot environment.
# beadm activate sepvar
# beadm unmount sepvar
# init 6

Using Solaris 11 Express for a multiprocessor CAD/CAM x86-64 system.
I'm considering using Solaris 11 Express as the OS for a multiprocessor Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing custom built x86-64 system for my machine shop business. I would like clarification of the license in this situation.
Would I be allowed to use Solaris 11 for free under the open-source license, or would I have to purchase a commercial license? Would I have to pay for program updates? Does just the Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription for Solaris 11 require payment rather than the actual software as well? Would I be required to purchase an Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription to use Solaris 11 in my situation, or can I purchase the Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription at a later date.
I have a lot of respect the open-source concept, and I would only use Solaris while keeping it's license intact. So the answers to these questions are very important factors affecting my decision regarding whether or not my company will start to use Solaris.I'm afraid you'll have to contact Oracle directly to clarify what applies in your situation.

Hi just upgraded to lion , now i can't use "word" can this be for real?
hi just upgraded to lion, now i cant use "word" help please
If it's Word 2004 or earlier, it's for real. That is a PPC app and it is no longer supported in Lion. You need an Intel version of Office. You and a lot of others who didn't know are out in the cold.

How to check actual allocated and used memory for java process in solaris?
Hi,
I'm testing performance for java application on solaris 10. And I would like to know how to measure actual memory allocated and used for java process.
I'm setting -Xms512m -Xmx512m for my java process and I use prstat command to monitor it's memory. But I found that when I run prstat to check, in SIZE column is more than I setting (found 644).
So I'm don't know the actual memory that java process used. (In this case,is it mean the process use memory (644) more than setting (512)?)
Thank you. With Xms/Xmx you specify the Java heap size. On top of that comes the permanent generation (default max size 64m) and the C part of the process (the JVM itself with all its libraries and data).
With "ps -e -o pid, vsz, rss, args" you get the virtual and set resident size of your processes.

Hi,
I'm new to labview and trying to develop an eye-tracker using labview 8.6. It has the vision development module and i was wondering if this was sufficient for real-time image acquisition and processing or would i be needing any other software tools.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello, certainly it is possible and sufficient for real-time tracking!
About eye tracking - if you need an example, you can find the code here:
https://decibel.ni.com/content/blogs/kl3m3n/2013/10/08/real-time-face-and-eye-detection-in-labview-u...
The code uses OpenCV functionalities along with the LabView UI (and some other functions like overlay).
Hope this helps a bit.
Best regards,
K

Sidebar; a real joke; DEAL BREAKER FOR LEOPARD
The Sidebar is impossible to read. I am 58; use special glasses for work on my
23" Hp Monitor on my dual 2.0 G5; MBP 15".
I can't read the sidebar. The Icons and Font size is RIDICULES; I NEED TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THOSE SO I CAN READ THEM.
Apple are you listening?
This is a deal breaker for me. I have installed Leopard on a Dual G5, MBP ; 20" Intel Imac. I will be going to my Carbon Copy Cloner backup and move them all back to OSX 10.4.10.
So SAD; SAD; SAD. Especially when this where Apple usually shines.Download "TinkerTool" from www.bresink.de
Ignore the Warning about possible incompatibilites - the program will not harm your system.
Then, in the "Font smoothing" options, set to:
"Turn of font smoothing for font sizes 144 pt and smaller"
close the application
log out and log back in.
or/and, if this still Works:
Create a Directory in your home Folder called ".MacOSX"
inside there, create a textfile named "environment.plist" with the following content:
<pre>
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>QDTEXT_ANTIALIASING</key>
<string>0</string>
<key>QDTEXT_MINSIZE</key>
<string>144</string>
</dict>
</plist>
</pre>
log out and log back in.
Does it look better then ? Dont know if that helps but give it a try.
Btw. I thought I did hear something about 10.5 offering "resolution independent" display - but find nothing related to this.
Anyone else noticed this too ? -
Using iMovie 10.0 my project say it's 10 hours when it's 25 minutes for real, how do I fix this?
Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP! Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process. Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal. No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

While using Firefox, a site popped up and said it was Firefox scanning for viruses. It then said I had dangerous viruses and should download a security program. Is this for real? The site was update32.escmce.ce.ms I googled this site and it does not exist. Now, I am worried about the security on my computer.
If you're running under Windows, I suggest you download and install Microsoft's Security Essentials. It protects against these types of attacks and tends to find stuff that other anti-virus scanners don't find. You're system could be infected because of that bogus, evil anti-virus scan. Install and run the software while in safe mode.

I PAD 2 TESTERS NEEDED; IS THIS FOR REAL?
IS ALL THIS I PAD 2 TESTERS NEEDED FOR REAL?
Umm, little more information please? Testing of what (an app, a case, a cover, a mobile solar charger - what are you being asked to test)? By whom? Who sent you the request to test something, or where did you see it?
P.S. If it is Apple asking you to help them beta test some software, they do email people (using the email address registered with their AppleID) and the email will be pretty self explanatory. -
Not being able to perform THE MOST BASIC FUNCTION of sending and receiving photos to other cell phones would have been a Deal Breaker for me. Since this is one of the most basic of functions, it didn't even occur to me to check on that particular capability. Puts back the real meaning of "assume."
You have 14 days from the purchase date to return it for payment credit - less a 10% restocking fee if the packaging is opened. If you are a new at&t subscriber for the iPhone, you can cancel your contract with at&t within 30 days of the activation date with no penalty.
Certainly if an important function to you, and something you use often, you discovered this within the first 14 days after the purchase date.
Or you can accomplish the same via email for recieving and sending MMS. -
Store all values from updateable report on clientside for later use
apex 4.2 , 11xe
hello,
it is possible to store all values from an updateable report to something like an cache BEFORE sent it to DB ?
Background:
i have an modified updateable report ,look the jpg
http://www10.pic-upload.de/25.06.13/3zq5wr23awwg.jpg
updateable report have ever 29 rows. as example i make time entrys for an employee. very often the next employee have the same timeentrys. now iam thinking about to make the entrys for the first employee, then click a button to store the values from ALL cells into somting like a javascript cache or jquery.data() . when i pull another employee from lov i have a fresh empty report( with 29 rows) and now i want to call the data back from cache to the cells (with another button). the cache shouldnt be destroyed when refresh the page, cause there is a page refresh when pull another employee from lov.
is it possible to store all cell values(empty or not) from report all in one?
what is the best and simplest way ?
good would be an example for the code or method i should use.
or is somthing inside apex i could use for that. i looked in apex.api but didnt found something.
my report based on a view with iof trigger and apex collection.
greets/christianthx for answer jarola and sorry for my bad english.
apex collection will not work.
let me explain why not and i think something like javascript/jquery is better for that.
there is a table MAZEIT and i have this updateable report. when i select an employee from lov, a collection will be created. the collection look in MAZEIT ,perhaps there are real timeentrys, in this case the collection will be modified and give me 29 rows, some are filled. or there are no real entrys and the collection give me 29 empty rows.
here my report sql:

and in end there are 3 other procedures, all for table MAZEIT, the collection and and the report.
in princip its a good idea,to create another collection, but difficult to bind it to the report TOO,cause my "cell-fill- functionality" is to complicated.
my idea is another: to look with javascript/jquery whatever on clientside the cell-values. and only the editable cells. not the hidden cells.there would be ca. 180 editable cells. i want store the values from this cells all in one in a cache (clientside! ).
then select next employee (collection will be created with view ect.) and give me this 29 rows. in this moment i have cells with ID f02_0001 as example and can use the cache values with that. the ID's ever the same, cause i have ever 29 rows.

Mail server setup for LAN use only
Hello,
I want to use smtp-notify for alert mails.
But I want to send these mails to LAN only - no internet connection is available.
How do I set up a mail server on SOL11E (pop or imap)?
The mails in /var/mail are just a simple file so I can't use them (like svccfg setnotify problem-diagnosed mailto:root@localhost )
I want to have a system where I look into my Inbox of my locally connected client. So I will be automatically aware if something happened to the Sol11E system without looking into the log files or /var/mail manually.
ThanksDo you need this mail server just for the zfs scrub reports or for all e-mail? How are clients currently getting e-mail? If you already have a mail server inside the company, or if you already have hosted mail server for company e-mail, that should be sufficient.
If you do have an internal mail server, you should be able to set the DS parameter in sendmail.cf to specify the mail server. If you don't have an internal mail server, and you are all using external e-mail accounts, that should still work. By default, sendmail (if running) should be able to send e-mail outside the LAN. Sendmail uses DNS to locate the mail server for the recipient.
You can verify that dns is working on the client with nslookup or dig

I don't know if Solaris 11 Express has a companion CD. Solaris 10 does- and you can MAYBE install packages from it. On OpenSolaris there is the /usr/bin/updatemanager and /usr/bin/packagemanager commands. I suspect Solaris 11 Express also has the same. On OpenSolaris you could download packages from the OpenSolaris internet repository. It MAY include the IMAP server. (it does not for the OpenSolaris server I have.)
Alternately, you could look for it on sunfreeware.com ( the Solaris 10 packages might work) or compile it from source. -
How do you restrict web browsing to view only specified sites for business use?
Hello, I need to restrict the use of Firefox and Internet Explorer to only specified websites that we use for business use.
I have a problem with a number of employees using unauthorized and dangerous websites that have put my business computers at risk.
Since it is impossible to police the employees viewing habits in real time, I need to restrict the viewing. How do I set up a list of only allowed sites that can only be overridden by admin privileges despite user accounts? You will have to block such unwanted sites in a firewall or router or proxy and only allow access via that proxy.<br />
All other ways can easily circumvented, by starting Firefox in [[Safe mode]] if it is an extension or by using a portable Firefox version.
