Deal with corrupted usb drive

I have been using a USB drive frequently for the last two years, and had more than 600 files on it (including MP3 and MP4). There has never been a problem before, but last night my MacBook Pro wouldn't open the drive, and when I tried using my mother's Windows 7 computer all it said is the drive was corrupted. Is there any way to try and rescue what is on that drive, or do I have to give up and loose hundreds of hours of work?

I was not able to drag or eject the USB drive from the desktop.
This problem does not happen every time, but frequent enough to be concerning. When problem occurs, I was not able to shut down Mac OS properly. I kept the USB drive plugged in and was able to close all my applications, except Finder. If I attempt to Force Quit the Finder, I would not even get to the top menu to shut down the Mac OS, and I had to force power down.
Is there a way to debug this issue or should I just take my Macbook and USB drive to the Genius Bar?

  • Partition &/or Format Corrupt USB Drive?

Posting here as I am convinced, after much reading, that Time Machine has corrupted an external USB drive. The drive is a 160GB SmartDisk FireLite external USB drive (model USBFLB160). I'm not worried about recovering the data as it is just a clone of my MBP's drive and I have other backups. I am, however, interested in at least being able to use the drive again.
The drive will not mount. Does not show in Finder or Disk Utility. Is not visible to Disk Warrior (but I have not booted form Disk Warrior CD - not sure if that would make a difference). Plugged directly in to one of the MBP's USB ports the drive is not visible in System Profiler. Plugged into a USB hub the drive is visible in System Profiler (but still not visible in any of the other places mentioned above). The drive will not mount on my XP laptop either and is not visible in XP Disk Management utilities (would have settled for formatting as FAT 32 so I could then reformat as HFS).
    I'm out of ideas.
Any suggestions on how I might be able to force-format (for lack of a better term) this drive? I'm willing to spend money so long as it is less than the cost of replacing the drive.
I apologize if this is truly the wrong place for this message. Happy to post elsewhere, but please let me know what forum would be better.
    Thank you for your time!

Having similar issues with a Smartdisk Firelite 160GB firewire drive which has gone haywire since I tried to use Time machine.
Clean install of leopard, hooked up the firewire drive - Time Machine began first backup then failed at 1.3Gb. Couldn't unmount drive. Eventually shutdown and removed drive. Powered up and reconnected - drive showed up - tried Time machine, same problem. This time tried to repair drive using disk utility. Would not do it. Tried to erase and reformat drive. Failed.
Since then have been stuck in a loop as above. Can mount drive to use as a basic drive but trying to use Time Machine hoses it.
Have read loads of posts about time machine issues similar to this but cannot find a solution.

  • IMAC won't start with external USB drive

I've been running Leopard for a few weeks now and decided to connect an external USB hard drive to use with Time Machine, it did the backup fine and seems to be working fine... however, every time I start my imac in the morning I get a gray screen that just hangs. I have to unplug the USB drive then reboot again.. that salves the problem.. but is annoying to have to do that each time.. I also noticed today that my ipod when plugger in via USB will not mount on the desktop.. I have to unplug the USB hard drive then plug the ipod in again.. that solves the problem..
Anyone have this same issue..??? It seems to be USB related or Time Machine related.. maybe both..
    Cheers
    D.

The Disks are formatted with Ntfs as i am using Bootcamp with Windows 7. So repairing disks would not work in Mac OSX, and is not needed as the disks are ok. I would be a strange coincidence that both disks would be corrupted at the same Time.
I have tried three different other USB disks in the meantime and the Macbook could Boot up everytime with no problem. I found the answer in another forum. The controllers (USB to SATA) in the enclosures of the disks are not compatible with my Macbook, they are rather cheap WD disks and a lot of other users reported the same problem. ist might be possible to upgrade the firmware, but i will rather look for some other disks and try them first before i buy.

  • IMac SSD full - how to deal with the two drives

    Greetings all,
I've been using an iMac i7 with two drives SSC and HDD.  Recently, I've been having issues with the SSD being close to full.  I use it for applications only, although some apps need lots of space (iTunes, iMovie, Photoshop, etc.)  I use Lightroom and have all the images on the spinning drive.  Does anyone know how to deal with this issue?  Any way I can move the music from iTunes to the separate drive, or any way to figure out what exactly is using most of my space?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • FSCK and reboot issues with external USB drive

I'm having an issue with an external USB hard drive I'm using.  I've always had issues with this drive cause my reboot to "freeze" when it's mounted.  Basically the system message with be sent out, but it doesn't actually proceed with the reboot.  No switch to init 6 or anything, but the shutdown process is still active.  I can continue to use the computer as usual, but I can't cancel the existing shutdown or try to enter init level 6 by hand.  So I just got around this by unmounting the drive before I shutdown.  However, lately when I try to unmount the drive I get an error saying that the drive is in use and I should check to see what processes are using it by runing lsof or fuser.
Yesterday I tried copying dsome files from the drive but there wasn't and activity on the drive. cp didn't report any errors though, it just sat there and did nothing.  I tried running fsck on the drive, but didn't get much farther.  I'll see some activity on the drive for about a second, then all activity stops and fsck just sits there. When I try to kill fsck, it won't.  Even with a kill -9.
I'm really confused as to what is going on.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Anyone have any ideas what could be causing all this or what I can do to stop this?  Thanks in advance!

Press the reset button on the device. It is located between the USB and power ports. Make sure to take-out the external USB drive before you reset the device. Or you can also restore the defaults by accessing the Administration tab > Factory Defaults sub-tab in the router’s web-based setup page. • Shuffle doesn't get along with other USB drives

Okay, so I purchased a new iPod Shuffle, and upon connecting it to my computer and installing all the software, I nearly had a heart attack. According to Windows Explorer, all my data on my 80 gig USB hard drive and my 1 gig flash drive had been erased. I unplugged the flash drive and plugged it back in, and Windows told me it had no idea what to do with that device.
Long story short, I've determined that it's the Shuffle that's causing it. If I plug in the Shuffle, Windows stops recognizing my other USB drives. If I disconnect the Shuffle and repower the other devices, they work normally again. The Shuffle has its own drive letter, so it's not a conflict there. Any ideas?

Same problems here. (-50 erros when trying to autofill and -1480 errors when attempting to Restore) I have two other iPods and they sync fine. I'm also having the same hang-up problems once I plug in the Shuffle and try to either Restore of Autofill. I successfully managed to load songs once after 40 minutes of work. Now, nothing. I've tried absolutely everything.
    Please fix this!

  • I accidently used Disk Utility to fix a partition. I cant boot in with any USB drive. Help.

I accidentally used Disk Utility to fix a partition.  It erased it.  I desperately need to restore it.
I have an imac without a cdrom.  How do I create a bootable usb with testdisk as for some bizarre reason it seems impossible to create a bootable usb drive for osx.  I tried GParted and the ultimate boot disk that both have test disk.
I am stumped.  Why can't I boot into my imac with a usb?  I have a mac air that I just cant seem to create a usb drive with testdrive thats bootable.  I even tried rEFit but no luck.
Anyone have an idea? How do I fix my system ?

I have an imac OSX 10.8.
I tried creating a usb drive of testdisk on my mac air so that I could use it to boot into the iMAC and restore the partition table.
    I created it using:
    hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o target.img ~/Desktop/ubcd530.iso
    dd if=./target.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m
It did not work.  It would not boot.  I also tried Gnome Partition tool and that did not boot either.  I need my old system as it has important data
    Any tips? Thanks!

  • Shenanigans with new USB drive and Time Capsule

It is probably best explained by consulting attached screen grabs (moderator: these are GIFs with filesizes 24K and 32K).
Drive: STUFF has been attached to TC for a while
Drive: Stuff 2 is a relatively new addition (old drive whacked into a USB drive container) and attached to TC
Image e01.gif shows what happens soon after powering up Stuff 2 with error message "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Stuff 2" cannot be found."
Possibly I have mucked up some setting somewhere or maybe used wrong format on Stuff 2?
Nonetheless after a while (possibly 5 minutes maybe more or less?) I try to access Stuff 2 and BONGO! It mounts fine and dandy (see e02.gif)
All images have (I hope) been suitably redacted.

  • How to deal with multiple hard drives?

I am using Aperture 1.5 but am having trouble
dealing with the Library structure. I want to be able to have Aperture recognize and work with Projects located on several different external hard drives. Where should the main library be located? In 1.5 is there such a thing anymore as a Branch library? I had a branch library on an external drive. I may have messed things up so that Aperture doesn't quite know where things are. Is there a way to re-organize things so that when I open Aperture ALL the projects I've worked with do appear? Thanks.

To have Aperture work with projects on different hard drives, just import the project files but tell Aperture to copy the files from their current location (say a media card or CD) to a directory of your choice on any drive of your choice. You can store projects on multiple drives. I don't think it matters where the main library is located, it could be on your primary drive, or on one of your external hard drives. I'm not sure how to consolidate projects that were enclosed in different libraries other than to export the projects individually, and then reimport them into the new centralized library. I do wish Aperture would allow one multiple select projects (it only allows you to select one at a time) for exporting. I also wish that Aperture had a 'Consolidate Libraries' command which would allow one to just pull all 'found' projects into one library.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with external USB drive started yesterday

My system freezes for about 65 seconds at the login screen. After 65 seconds, I can login and everything is normal afterwards.
I discovered that I can eliminate the freeze by disconnecting the external USB drive from the PC. Here are the error messages from kernel.log when the drive is connected:
    Oct 15 23:10:14 localhost kernel: [ 17.035091] usb 1-1.3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
    Oct 15 23:10:29 localhost kernel: [ 32.155955] usb 1-1.3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
Oct 15 23:10:29 localhost kernel: [ 32.325394] usb 1-1.3: new high speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd
Oct 15 23:10:31 localhost kernel: [ 34.045126] MediaState is connected
There is supposed to be a kernel boot option (irqpoll) to prevent this from occurring. However, that option seems to no longer work for kernels after 2.6.39. If I try using it with Arch, the system will not boot, saying all the CPU's failed.
I also don't understand why this just started happening yesterday, as the USB drive has been connected to the PC longer than I've been using Arch. Also, my kernel has not been updated since I installed Arch on Oct 8.
Does anyone know another fix or workaround for this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Problem solved
I feel stupid, but I also feel better. I turned off the PC, disconnected the power from the USB drive for about 15 seconds, reconnected the power, rebooted, removed the irqpoll kernel option, and Ubuntu started, perfectly. I need to learn that the USB drive just goes freaky sometimes and remember to do this. But, this is only the second time I've had to do this in months of use.

  • Custom Icons with FAT32 USB Drive

    Hi
I want to put a custom icon on a USB drive that's formatted to FAT32.
When I do this with a Mac OS Extended formatted USB drive, it works fine - the icon is attached to the dive, and appears when the the drive is mounted on another Mac.
But when I do this with a FAT32 formatted USB drive, the icon works on my desktop, but does not appear when the drive is mounted on another Mac.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Thanks for your help.
    Bruno.

    Hmm, error -20 is:
-20 writErr Driver can't respond to Write call
I'm not sure why it would be doing that. I've got two PNY brand flash drives and have no problem erasing them under Tiger or Panther. You mention trying to repartition the drive. I suppose it's possible that you can't have more than one partition on a flash drive. Maybe the whole thing has to be one format type. Don't know that for sure, though. I've never tried it.

  • RAID with two USB drives?

I just bought two USB drives (2 x WD 3 TB MyBook Essential) and tried to set them up as mirrored RAID on my Mac Mini (Mid 2010 model, OS X 10.7) using Disk Utility. It lets me do all the configuration (pick disks, etc.) but when I hit create, I get the following error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted.
Is there any way to solve this / explanation why this happens?

Here is an app that should do what you are looking for.
    http://qgf.in/BBRBMh
that will take you to a shareware page at apple.com. The software lets you compare two different drives and select which way you want the changes to go.
It is shareware so you should be able to try it out before you buy it. Make sure it does what you want.
Another option is Chronosync http://qgf.in/PLfpeu . It is a little pricey, but it works well.

  • How to deal with corruption issue?

A couple of months ago after installing Aperture 2, my Imac started slowing down, every program at some time would hang and could not be forced to quit. The machine had to be turned off (control command power) and left off for several minutes. On restart, things would be fine for 1 to several days. It has been to the shop twice with no improvement and I have talked to the experts a couple of time. This is my first mac so I only have a couple of years experience. From all I have read it would seem I have a corruption issue. I set up a troubleshooting account and the computer acts like it did when it was new on that account. Of course I can use none of my data in this account. Where do I go from here, reset preferences, archive and reformat? Please give me some suggestions and directions on how to do it?
    Thanks,
    oldgrandad

    Hi,
It sounds like it's the same issue I was having. In my experience, as long as important data is backed up, doing an "Erase & Install" from time to time clears out any files/data that is causing your system to run slow (cache files etc). Mine had become painfully slow (I work mainly with images/large files) & was getting a bit frustrating if I was using Aperture & Photoshop etc.
I also use Techtool Pro to defrag & keep my hard drives in good shape.
The extra RAM combined with the "cleanse" definitely made a big improvement & all programmes run extremely well now.
