Dealing with dead cd/dvd drive

So my cd/dvd drive seems to be completely dead. I purchased a Sony dvd rewritable drive (DRX-830UL-T). But, duh, the included software I need to install to get it going (apparently Toast 6 Lite) is on CD, and of course, my drive doesn't recognize anything now.
Anyplace I can get the download online, given that now I've paid for it, so I can get to writing my DVDs again?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Toast won't help read CDs/DVDs, it's only for burning. Try installing the Patchburn driver.

Boot the mini into TD mode
Connect it to the "other" Mac
Insert the install disk in the "other" Mac
Start the installer which will reboot the "other" Mac
Once the "other" Mac has restarted and is running from the install disk, you should be able to select the Mini's drive (the FW disk) as the install destination. If not, go into the Disk Utility (under the "Utilities" menu) and check out the FW disk. You may need to "repair" it, repair permissions or reformat it depending on the condition of the disk and the type of partition it contains.

  • Could I use iBook to upgrade iMac with dead CD/DVD drive?

I don't speak computer very well.......I was wondering if I could upgrade my old iMac by using the iBook as an external Hard drive. I tried using a firewire connection and holding down the T key. It worked for file transfer, but not upgrading the OS. Is it possible? I have the Tiger disc in the iBook.

    Yes, it should work.
You need the iMac to be the Target Disk in FireWire Target Disk Mode. This means holding down the T key on the iMac. Then start the Installation from the Tiger disc, selecting the iMac's hard drive (on the iBook's Desktop) as the drive for the installation.
If it is the Graphite iMac you are upgrading, be sure that the firmware is up-to-date.

  • DKA790GX Plat with SATA + IDE DVD drives

I have been running my mb with 2 x SATA HDs and 2 x IDE DVD. No problem.
In (re)building on older computer I had the need for an IDE DVD drive as the SATA was too new so I swapped out one of the IDE from my DKA790GX.
Now I can get the SATA DVD to work fine  on the DKA790GX but NOT the IDE. It seems to be working OK as it makes all the same noises as the SATA when I put in a disk. I have tried moving Jumpers and different IDE cable but can not get it to work.
In itself it is no big deal but I kinda like having an IDE around as it has got me out of scrapes a couple of times.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

It seems that the new version of Itunes has conflicted with my CD/DVD drive because when I uninstalled and re installed the itunes my drive has stopped working and I now have an error code of 19 - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) I have tried to update drivers but I am up to date, I have installed and re installed my drive this did not solve the problem.  I am now at a loss as to what to do I have had a live chat with microsoft and they could not reslove it all they wanted to do was sell me another service!!!  Could installing an older version of itunes solve this issue?

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • Upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger with an external DVD drive.

I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Tiger 10.4.11 with an external DVD drive. The disc loads OK and prompts me for my password to restart and begin the installation. On restart, instead of being asked to accept the terms of use and etc... I just get the same prompt to restart and get caught in a loop. Any tips?

    Try this instead:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon of the Snow Leopard DVD.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Reinstalling OS with a broken DVD-Drive

    Hi guys
I got this MacBook from around 2009 with a broken DVD-Drive, and I want to reinstall the OS.
Im not that much into the Mac stuff, since I got the computer from a friend a few days ago.
I got acess to some Windows computers and an external DVD-Drive, but the MacBook can't seem to find the external drive.
How could I reinstall the OS or somehow approach this?

    Yes.
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • Need help with my CD DVD Drive

I'll apologize in advance, because I know this message is going to be confusing, but if you can stick with me to the end, you will understand why.
Basically, the problem is that although my Powermac G4 can read almost any commercial disk, it is unpredictable when it comes to those I have burned. But here is what's going on:
    1) Until recently, I was plugging along quite happily with 2 Macs: (a) a PowerMc G4, purchased some time around 1999 and (b) an iMac G3 , which I bought about 2 years later. Also had (and still have) a Mac Notebook, which I bought around 2003-04, but until recently had only used once or twice.
    2) Both the Notebook and G3 were running on OS 10.2.8, and the G4 on OS 9.2, which enabled me to continue to work with older files that I still rely on. The G3 and G4 are also networked via ethernet.
Hope I haven't lost you yet, because this is where things get confusing . . .
    3) All 3 of the above Macs came with CD drives, but no two are alike. The G4 has a Matshita CD/DVD drive and software version 1.4.5., but no burner. The iMac G3 reads and burns disks, but I can't tell you the software version, because, as I'll explain next, I can't see it at this moment. But it does not read DVDs. The Notebook has a read-only drive (version 1.4.8).
    4) All was well until about 8 weeks ago, when the optical drive in the G3 started sticking and finally died with a disk (that belonged to a client) in the drive. After much panic, I managed to retrieve the disk, but meanwhile had learned that the problem probably was due to the treads on the slot drive having worn out, and spoke with several repair shop techs who said it would cost in excess of $300 to repair.
Meanwhile, I had discovered the just-released Mac/ Intel, fell in love with it and decided, "What the heck, I deserve it." So I bought one and immediately started to assemble old data strewn across both the G4 and G3 for burning. At this point, I've been at it for several weeks, but right now am unable to view info because it is connected to the Mac/Intel via firewire.
Since the drive on my old G3 was kaput, I tested the first disk I burned on the G4 and breathed a sigh of relief when, after a relatively long boot up time, it finally popped up on the desktop. When the next disk I burned failed to show up at all, I suspected it might be a bad disk (even though it was a major brand name), so immediately burned another from a new pack of disks. If failed to load, too. But when I tried them on my Notebook, both appeared on the desktop within seconds.
So my question now, is where do I go from here?
Since the G4's ability to read burned CDs had always been flaky, I had figured it might have something to do with the speed of the burner. Now I'm not sure — especially since I burned the latest disks at a slow speed, and as I've descrbed, the results are still erratic. (i.e., At least one of them works on all 3 computers, including my new Mac/Intel but not the G3 with the broken drive . .. and the others only work on the Notebook and Mac/Intel.)
I've also wondered if there's been a software upgrade for the CD/DVD drive on the G4 that will work with OS 9.2. (Really don't want to upgrade that system yet . . especially since I'd like to continue using some of my older apps, which probably will not work on my newest Mac.) For the same reason (i.e., concern that it might prevent old apps from working), I've always ignored the automatic software update announcements that pop up on my screen each month — but when I checked the Apple site earlier this evening I couldn't find any anyway.
I'm hoping someone out there will know what I'm talking about and have a suggestion or two that I can try.
    Thanks for your attention.

    Thanks, Joseph . . .
Meant to reply yesterday, but I was busy all day, working to save and burn those files. But I did want you to know that I took your advice and picked up a Memorex laser lens cleaner disk. Contrary to the salesman's insistence when I asked, it really did seem designed more for drives that play mainly music CDs than graphics ( the only thing that interests me) . . . because tracks 5-14 all dealt with testing sound and there was no way for me to stop the process (as the narrator suggests) because that's not an option on my Mac.
Consequently, I only ran it once. But I did notice a definite improvement in how quickly icons for my burned disks appeared on my G4 desktop. Only problem was that they would not open on that computer although they do on my iBook, which also has PM 6.5 installed. And while they also show up on my Mac/Intel, it can't read them bcause it does not recognize the application — and according to what I've hust learned, NEVER will. (A warning to anyone else with a stockpile of PM documents they hope to play: Better find and learn another page layout application future Macs will read and start converting those docs asap . . . or at least before your older machine dies.)
Also tried copying the primary document (the other files just contain support data , such as graphic/photos, etc.) — but that failed, too.
So it looks like I'm back to square #1 — but still thinking the problem might somehow be related to the size of the document (139MB) even though my G4 has 920 MB ROM (vers. 8.3.1) and total hard drive space of 95 GB . . . Long ago, I also increased the recommended memory for PM from 5,200k to 50,000k. The only thing that makes me question my premise re: size is that the doc opens without difficulty on my little iMac, which only has a ROM CD drive.

  • Portege R935-ST3N02 with Windows 8 DVD Drive won't open and doesn't appear in Explorer

I have seen posts concerning this problem under Windows 7, but my new laptop came with Windows 8.  The button on the DVD drive will not open it.  I can force it open using the paper clip hole, but the computer does not recognize any CD or DVD that I put in the drive.  Anyone have ideas on what I should do?

Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.
If that doesn't work, check if it's listed in the Device Manager.
    Windows key + x > Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives
If it is listed there, try right-clicking it and selecting "Uninstall." Then reboot your computer and see if it works.

  • Another dead CD/DVD drive

    Hi all,
My G4 PowerBook has decided that it won't play CDs or DVDs anymore. Actually, I can't even get THAT far because it won't grab discs either!
In the System Profiler, it says that there is no DVD drive in the laptop. So it's knackered. Probably something simple, but by the time I send it off to be repaired/replaced, I might as well get an external DVD re-writer.
    Which I did. (I need a dual-layer burner anyway...)
The external re-writer burns and reads both CDs and (data) DVDs fine, iTunes works, etc, etc, etc but will DVD Player work with it? Nope
If I insert a commercial DVD into my external drive, it comes up on the desktop, I can see the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders fine and - heck! - when I double-click on it, DVD Player opens, but I then get an error message come up saying there is no DVD drive.
And I can't find a way to 'force' DVD Player to read discs from the external drive.
Can anyone a. recommend a patch to do the above or b. suggest some software that will enable me to play DVDs from my external drive?
    Ta!!

I suggest you go to the external DVD manufactures web site and make sure that you have the latest updates and drivers for your model.
Don't forget to go to System Prefrences and make sure that you have your external selected to open when a DVD is inserted. Be sure to read the options from the externals web site.

  • Satellite A200-1vp with Vista - CD/DVD drive failure code 39

    Hi,
I have been burning and watching DVDs on my Satellite A200-1vp, with vista, since February, the last time I burned anything was a couple of weeks ago.
Suddenly there's a problem, no response when I load a disc and my divx player tells me no recorder found.
When I search in the device manager I get the message " windows cannot load the driver for this hardware" (code 39) " driver is corrupted or missing".
I tried uninstalling it and using the Toshiba upper/lower limit filter repair tool but on restart it still failed to install.
Should i try the Toshiba Recovery Disc and loose a lot of unbacked up programs/files, as last resort?
    Would that work?
    Anybody got any ideas?

Here is an interesting Microsoft knowledge article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270008/en-us
You should firstly access the device manager and should remove the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Then should access the registry and should remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Reboot the notebook and check if the CD/DVD drive would work again!
