Dealing with non-square pixels from video capture (CS3)

Hi all,
This is the problem I have : I watch a video on my PC using any utility such as, for example, CyberLink's PowerDVD. I pause the movie to capture a frame to the Clipboard, then I paste it into PS CS3 via a newly created document.
Because the movie was shot and recorded on the DVD in widescreen format, therefore using non-square pixels (wider than they are tall), the still image in PS appears "shrunk" horizontally. I then go to Image|Pixel Aspect Ratio and set the ratio to, say, "D1/DV PAL Widescreen (1.42)", as I am in PAL-land. The still image now looks fine, and I can save it, for example in TIFF format ; it will retain its "non-square pixel" attribute, with the black bands on top and at the bottom.
However, what I utimately want to do is use that still image on the Web, so I need to save it as a JPEG image, and this is where the problem happens : the JPEG conversion reverts those pixels to square ones, whether I use the "Save for Web and Devices..." option, or just the "Save As..." one.
How can I turn my very heavy TIFF into a much leaner JPEG, while retaining the non-square pixels that give the image its correct proportions ? Is there a way around this problem ?
I'm not used to dealing with non-square pixel images, so any help and tip will be greatly appreciated. Many thaks in advance.
Dominic.

As Zeno said, you can simply copy&paste. Also, there is always an equivalent square pixel format for each anamorphic format that can fully accommodate the image, which would be 1024x576 for PAL widescreen. For more info on PAR conversions, I recomemnd you do some reading in the online help files for After Effects or Premiere Pro.

How do I save as jpg and retain the non square pixels?
    Thank You,

Well, I just showed you one.
No you did not. Our displays only show square pixels.

    WHY?
    Are you yelling?
Where will this image appear? Why do you need PAR if it looks "perfect" on the web without it? What is your output intent? 800x533 is not a video dimension.
    That is not important.
I asked WHY because you started this discussion with extreme ambiguity. Others have typed many words to try to help you but you have helped no one in return by explaining yourself and what you are trying to do.

Eh... you (and every other photographer with javascript gimmicks) may want to re-evaluate how you post and "protect" images. PAR is not much of a step up from what you have.
You making RUDE assumptions that are ridiculous This is only the second question I have asked. Thanks for the help lady!
If I wanted to be rude, I would let you continue to waste your time on pointless techniques that really do not protect your images.
You can prevent others from making assumptions by...

  • AME - Windows Media export, default templates and non-square pixels

In Adobe Media Encoder the default Windows Media export templates have non-square Pixel Aspect Ratio.  In Windows Media Player 9, if you play AME's wmvs with non-square pixels all you get is a vertical line a few pixels wide (though they play fine in WMP10 & 11).
There is definitely a problem with non-square pixels.
Using AME, if you create a PAL wmv (720x576 with DV PAL P.A.R.) you get the display problem in WMP9, whereas a D-1 PAL wmv (768x576 with square P.A.R.) will display fine.  If you encode the same content with exact the same settings (codec, resolution, etc) with Microsoft's Windows Media 9 Encoder, the resultant output plays fine regardless of the P.A.R!
One for you chaps at Adobe I think:
If Windows Media Encoder can create WMP9 compatible wmvs, why can't Adobe Media Encoder?
or if there is a problem with non-square PARs, then why is it an option on export - remove it until it is fixed?
Any support would be greatly appreciated.
    Edmund Barton
I'm using Prem 4.1 with AME 4.1 against Windows ME 9.  WMP9 is the base player we have to support, so upgrading all the players isn't a option.

If you can't upgrade the players, then using Windoes Media Enoder may be your only option.  Adobe just came out with a 4.1 patch, so it's unlikely you'll see any more 'fixes' in the very near future.

  • Dealing with non-database elements!!

hi all, i knew that i have to deal with non-database elements from javascript code and not from SQL code.. but i need to do some processing from SQL code and then update non-database element, how could i do this??

    You should use <?if:element = ''?> or <?if:element != ''?>
    This should work also:
    <?if:text(element)?> or <?if:not(text(element))?>
The condition is always true (false) when either the element is empty or does not
exist. Let me know, if you need to differentiate between both (probably using name() instead of text will work in this case).
If a pagebreak is inside the if statement than it is only shown when the condition is satisfied.
    Hope that helps,
    Klaus

  • Scanning stills in PShop (square vs non-square pixels)

    Hello,
We need to scan hundreds of still photos for a documentary. We've done this before and are familiar with the whole square pixels (PhotoShop) and non-square pixels (FCP). By the way, we're using PhotoShop 7 and FCP 5.
In the past we've adjusted our images in PShop (reducing the height) before importing into FCP, and things have turned out nicely.
But before we tackled this new project, we ran a test and were surprised by the results.
    I don't get the following:
    1. If I make a test image (a red circle) in PShop 7 with an image size of 720x540 pixels, the image looks correctly proportioned in PShop.
    2. If I then make a second test image (the same red circle) -- or duplicate the file from step one -- and then adjust the image size to 720x480, the image looks squished in PShop -- it's an ellipse. But this second version SHOULD be just right for FCP 5.
    3. But when I import both files into FCP 5, they BOTH look just fine. They look exactly the same on the monitor (well, the second one seems to have slightly cleaner edges).
    4. When I analyze each clip's Motion tab, FCP has automatically Distorted the 720x480 PShop file by -12.5 -- and it looks fine: a nice round ball. Meanwhile the 720x480 PShop file (the one adjusted in PShop for FCP) has NO Distortion, looks exactly the same. Both versions are perfectly round in FCP. You can toggle from last frame to first frame across the edit and nothing changes.
Hmmm, is FCP recognizing a sq pixel image and automatically adjusting? And if so, how does it know to distort one file but not the other?
Then it gets more interesting when I scan a test photo and:
    5. I scan an image at 300 dpi (overscanned so we can move on the image in FCP) and the image is 2084x1488. When I bring this image into FCP 5 (or in FCP 4 for that matter) ... anyway, when I bring this image into FCP 5 if looks great even though it has square pixels and has NOT been prepped in PShop for FCP. It has NOT been squished by FCP. When I check the motion tab, it has been scaled down to 34.55% (that's fine) and distorted by -12.5. It's behaving like the round ball test in No. 1 above.
    6. Meanwhile if I take this same image and adjust it for FCP (2084x1324) and bring it into FCP, it looks just right, too. The motion tab shows that FCP has scaled it 38.83% (that's fine) but now it has ALSO distorted it by -12.5. So it is NOT behaving like the ellipse in No. 2 above (which had ZERO distortion)?
Regardless, I wonder if any one can tackle this so we understand what's gong on. And the big question is: Why are we taking that step to prep the PShop files for FCP, if FCP seems to handle either version properly? We'd save a lot of time if we didn' take this step in PShop for hundreds of photos ...
Thanks in advance for taking time to comment. This is a wonderful forum and we're always amazed at how kind and sharing contributors are.
    Brad

"FCP has automatically Distorted the 720x480 PShop file by -12.5"
    That should probably read 720x540.
Yes, FCP does the distortion automatically. It's done this since v3. The problem is, as you've noticed, it doesn't do it nearly so well as Photoshop. Yes, you could let FCP do it for you, but it will soften the image more than you might like. There is also one caveat. This only works for flattened images, images imported as graphics files. Other PSD files with layers or transparency that import as sequences will not be automatically resized when they are placed inside another sequence.

  • Convert Square Pixels to Non-Square Pixels

    Hi everyone,
I have some JPEG picture of the earth (720x486, Square pixels) that when I import it in FCP, the earth will not look round because it converts it in non-square pixels. I know that I need to convert my picture from Square pixels to non-square pixels AND keep the aspect of the earth round, but how to do it? That is my question.
    Thanks for the help,

Load the image from the Timeline into the Viewer and click on the Motion tab. Open the Distort controls and adjust the aspect ratio accordingly. Depending on your Sequence settings, -12 or -33 should do it.

  • How to deal with Cash Deposited/Withdrawn from Bank

    Gurus,
How to deal with Cash Deposited/Withdrawn from Bank for office use.
    <b>Here is the senario:</b>
When Cash is deposited in Bank the entry is
    Bank Main A/c Dr
    To Cash A/c
and when Withdrawn from Bank the entry was
    Cash A/c Dr
    To Bank Main Account
Now my question is, How we will deal with these transactions while creating Bank Reconcilation Statement. As per my knowledge.
Bank Main Account Balance = Sum of all Bank Clearing Accounts.
If the difference occurs with cheques we deposit it or make note of issue while BRS, which effect the Clearing Accounts, But, How about Cash Deposit and Cash Withdrawn, coz these won't effect any of the Clearing Accounts.
    How do deal with this.
    please advice.
    Satish

    Hi Satish,
Through FBCJ transaction you can do the cash receipt / cash payment to Bank (Bank clearing Account). By using the Business transaction "Receipt from Bank" and "Payment to Bank".
Hence bank posting will happen in the Bank clearing account. As soon as BRS is done, it will hit the Bank Main account.
Hope it is clear for you. If my reply is useful than please assign points for the same.
    Thanks & best regards,

  • Problem previewing 'non-square' pixels

We have an AE CS4 project that is to be rendered/exported for a PAL DVD project
(that will be authored in Encore) so we have set all of the composition settings to
    D1/DV PAL, widescreen (1.46).
We will also need a rendered file format suitable for PC viewing (on laptops/online etc)
When we do a 'test' render (.mov) of a composition and preview it in
Quicktime it appears in a 4:3 format (squashed).
Assuming this is because of the 'square' pixels used on monitors how do we
prepare the files to be suitable for viewing on a monitor and DVD authoring?
    (Using Mac & Win xp).
    Thanks for any help.

it imported into Encore Ok but there was some letterboxing visible at the top and bottom of the frame(?)
Resize your preview window/ set the content scaling to fit/ check your field settings for the footage. Whichever is applicable here. Also keep in mind that it's called preview for a reason - unless you have buit the DVD and tested it by playing it from a folder or burning it to a test DVD-R, there is no way to be 100% sure of these things.
Which file format & codec render settings do you recommend to get the best results in Prem/Pro and/or Encore? (ie want to maintain best quality until final output)
Doesn't matter much, as long as it is visually lossless, meaning Quicktime Animation or PNG preferrably, PhotoJPEG with a high quality setting also works. Of course feel free to render stuff from AE directly to MPEG-2 DVD.

  • Adobe premiere elements 12 with diamond vc500 one touch video capture device.

Adobe premiere elements 12 and using Diamond vc500 one touch video capture device.
AVI files will not load into Adobe premiere elements 12.
I bought what I thought were the two best software and capture devices.
I am archiving old VHS tapes and using Diamond vc500 capture software called EZ grabber. I thought the best archiving format would be AVI files. As I just started this project. I am willing to do what is needed.
That even being, going and buy another capture device that being for a VCR to PC using a USB are even a Video card.
EZ grabber software ask you to record in what format. I picked AVI. There is DVD - SVCD - VCD - MPG4. I want to archive then go back and edit. The DVD or SVCD format, is that not the same as mpeg 2?
You and I know the drill. Saving in what long term archive format and that dare thing about video compression and losing quality of the videos. Its all a nightmare.
Once again I am willing to buy another capture device for a VCR that will work with Adobe premiere elements 12.
Help please with long term archiving format and capture device.
    Thanks

    The answer is B.
Capturing the VHS content to computer (via the Diamond vc500 and USB connection and EZ grabber) to obtain an .avi file on your computer and then trying to import that into Premiere Elements with its Add Media/Files and Folders?
When I do that, the Adobe premiere elements 12 crashes or only loads a 2 mins of video.
The firewire connection device "Canopus" product sounds great. But I really don't want to spend that much on my home videos. My PC does not have a Firewire connection. So add a new card for that and the Canopus product. I could just pay someone to do my VHS tapes.
    Diamond vc500 $35
    Adobe premiere elements 12 $65
    Firewire card $50 plus
    Canopus $180
$330 is way too much for simple home VHS videos

  • Play video from video capture device

I tried fixing my running of out memory for the video buffers problem but could find a fix. I have tried code from a book and it doesn't work. I can only get the video feed to display the video from the capture device using JMStudio, so the device works fine. Maybe my coding methodology/process is incorrect.
Is there anyone out there that knows of some working code that plays live video in a window from a video capture device. Any other help regarding to displaying capture video would help. Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

I am using the Belkin USB VideoBus II and it uses the video for windows drivers (vfw), so yet it is supported. And it works when I use JMStudio to play the live feed from the capture device. Thanks for the suggestion.
I also ran the code suggested above and I still get the same errors. Thanks for your suggestions. Any other help or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Square or non square pixels

I am very new to After Effects and am completely unsure about which composition and preset Settings to choose. I want to create a slideshow to view on a SD LED TV although I have no idea which preset to choose: PAL DV, PAL DV Widescreen, PAL DV Squarew Pixels, PAL DVWidescreen Square Pixels.
Should I be working in 720x576, is it okay to view on widescreen TV??
    Thanks in advance

It is always best to work with square pixels. It is also always best to work at the maximum frame size you can reasonably expect to have need to use. For most projects today this means HD. The last decision is what frame rate to use. In PAL standard countries the minimum standard frame rate is 25 fps. Everywhere else the minimum standard is 23.976. There are other frame rate considerations for your main project that involve the kind of motion you are going to use. Generally speaking you get smoother motion with less chance of jittering or stroboscopic effects with higher frame rates.
That was a lot to throw out at you all at once. Take a deep breath, I'm going to throw you some more. It's time to talk about source materials. It's always best to always start with the highest quality source material you can for your project but, now read this carefully because you are interested in doing a slide show, it is always best to size photographs and other artwork like Illustrator files (vector art) to a size that matches the size in the final project or is just slightly larger.
What does that mean? Let's talk about your slideshow. First of all I would not consider working any project in Standard Definition any more. There are very few displays that are only 720 pixels wide. Even phones have higher resolution screens than that. My minimum size for any movie is full HD, 1920 X 1080. I also work mostly at 29.97 fps because it gives me more freedom with motion. We'll talk about sizing your slideshow for distribution later. For now let's talk about your slide show and the images you are going to use in it.
So you've decided to do the slide show at 1920 X 1080 using the (PAL Standard) 25 fps setting. You've also shot all of your images with a 16 MP camera in Camera RAW format so you are starting with High Quality originals. You're processing your original photos in Photoshop to crop, color correct, and touch up. What size do you use for your final export. The originals are probably close to 4912 x 3264. That's 2.5 times larger than a standard HD frame size. If you are designing your slide show to show the full image at some point then your images can be resized in Photoshop to 1920 pixels wide. You should do final image sharpening and adjusting there. If, on the other hand, you want to push in on your photographs to see some details on the photos you must consider the final framing of the move on your photographs. At the original 4912 x 3264 frame size you could push in to about 1/4 of the picture without any problems. You can estimate the safe framing of your photographs by setting a fixed size to the rectangular selection tool in Photoshop and dragging it around your image. If you want to move in to show more detail than you see in this preview then you should scale up your photos in Photoshop and do your best to fix the scaling artifacts and improve the image there.
Why don't you want to just use your photographs at full resolution? Because Photoshop will do a much better job at scaling your photos than you can do in AE and because your project will easier to work with and faster to render.
Now let 's talk about delivering your project. You should always save your project with all of the source files. An AE project file does not contain any source footage. There's nothing in there but pointers to the original source footage. If you move the original footage, or don't save it then your project file is in a little trouble or completely ruined. You have two options for rendering your project to a delivery codec. The first is to render the project to a production codec that is lossless or nearly lossless. This is good for storage and, if you are delivering to several different formats or may need to do so in the future, this is the best first step. Once you have your Lossless original rendered you render a delivery version with the appropriate software. You should NOT use After Effects Render Cue to render to a delivery format. Highly compressed GOP compression like h.264 require multi pass compression do to a good job. You need specialized software for that. Fortunately Adobe supplies the Adobe Media Encoder with After Effects and it is very good at that job.
Another advantage of the Adobe Media Encoder is that you can load your After Effects project file directly into the Adobe Media Encoder and render your delivery product there. This skips the first render and, for many projects is sufficient. If you have SD and HD output requirements you can set up the AME to render both at the same time using standard presets. This will also save you time.
I hope this helps you figure out the best workflow. Good luck on your AE journey. I've been on it for more than 20 years.

  • Dealing With Non Uniform Array Sizes

Would it be possible to store data such as
    1 2 3 4 5 6
    0 2 4
    3 1 4 1 5 9 2 6 5 3 5 8 9
Where each row is not nessicarly the same length. I need to later call a specific row by row number and plot the 1D array. I have figured out arrays wont deal with the non uniform length and will instead fill in the extra elements so they all match in length. Is there any way around this?
    Thanks

It is generally better to use Repalce Array Subset or autoindexing to build an array. Insert into Array may cause memory allocation problems. Here are two mnodifications to your VI which show both methods. If you need to see the results as you go, the Replace Array Subset is best. If you do not need the data until the for loop completes, autoindexing is the preferred choice.
Note that you may need to initialize your shift register. Run the VI multiple times and watch the results.
