Death Ball in Aperture 3.4.5

Bugs up in Aperture 3.4.5 , while doing a Black and White  / brushing away to reveal color / sharpening / bluring .
The Ball of Death reared it's ugly head for a good 30 sec's .
Tad concerned as I'm running a late 27' 3.4 i7 , 2gig graphics card and 8 gig of mem ,purchased April.
Plus its Lagging while brushing . Perhaps iMac's are't up to doing Aperture ? or is this normal for an Mac ?
Maybe there's something in settings I should / could change ?

Plus its Lagging while brushing . Perhaps iMac's are't up to doing Aperture ? or is this normal for an Mac ?
Is this a recent occurence? Has Aperture been working well, and just now started to become slow? DO you have sufficient free disk space on your system drive? At least 15-20 GB?
Is your Aperture library on your internal drive or an external drive? How ist the drive with the library connected? If this problem started directly after you imported images, you may have imported an image or video that Aperture cannot process. You can see that, if you open Aperture's Activity viewer.
(From the main menu bar: Window > Show Activity). Is it constantly processing the same image?
Or your Aperture library may be corrupted and need repairing.
If Aperture works well, without hanging, when working from a new Aperture library created for testing, then try to repair your Aperture library; see: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual.

My iMac 24 Intel Duo chip computer recently started to slow down and then eventually I get the dreaded spinning beach ball... from there its almost impossible to get the computer to respond. I was able to open Console and found the following which concerns me:

I don't even have Timbuktu!! I had their program a long time ago but haven't installed it on one of my computers in about 6 years.. I did a search using Spotlight for Timbuktu thinking there was some file I could delete but it could not find any files with Timbuktu attached to it.. any suggestions?? Could the files listed above likely be causing my problem? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for taking time to read this post..I am running 10.6.4 but another problem is that the web browser won't let me use drop down menus..sigh
    Geoff

You might try searching for both "timbuktu" and "netopia." Get Easy Find - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - because Spotlight does not search within system folders without additional configuration.

  • Aperture 3 Importing Folders as Projects is taking days to complete

    Hello,
I acquired Aperture 3 a week ago and decided to give it a try. I've been using Lightroom since version 1. All my photos are in NEF (Nikon RAW) format and stored on an External HD. I used the A3 option FILE > IMPORT > FOLDERS AS PROJECTS command and selected folders from year 2008, 2009, 2010...this are 109 folders (13401 photos) from a total of 348 from year 2003 to date, meaning I am importing a fraction of all photos.
A very important note: I use the import option "Store Files: In their current location"...so that A3 is not moving, copying and so on, any files - it's just referencing them.
The problem starts here - it took Aperture 3 almost 24 hours to complete the "import"...i.e. to fill all the Projects with the corresponding photos. But the IMPORT PROCESS continues forever, today is day 4...the Aperture Library on this has grown to 18 GB and still growing. There is small but constant Hard Disk activity between the External HD with the Photos and the internal HD with the Library.
If I try to quit Aperture I get a message box:
+"Do you want to continue importing? Aperture is currently importing files. If you quit, the import task will be canceled and any files that have not been fully imported will be removed. | Quit | Continue |"+
How much longer shall I wait? Is it really importing or is this a bug? Why is there no progress bar or counter to give an estimate or idea of what is going on?
Just as reference: I imported the same folders (109) into Lightroom 3 Beta with the option "Store Files: In their current location" and it took only 1-2 hours.
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Kostadin

    Kostadin,
I'm noticing same thing today. This morning I imported about 100 Canon 7D RAW images from my memory card, which took about 5 minutes upon which I got the "Delete Images and Eject Card?" dialog. I accepted and removed the card.
4 hours later, I still have a "Importing..." spinning ball on Aperture. For the first couple of hours, I was trying to send emails with a few images and it would take 20 minutes for Aperture to generate the JPEG in the email. Now it only takes 10-15 seconds. BUt it is still "importing". So aperture continues to function, but it has some process going which keeps my CPU fans running on the MacBook Pro.
I am anxious to see just how long it takes to IMPORT... after it finishes importing.
What's it doing for this long?
    Jim

  • Mail Spinning Ball on Sync

when I open Mail, I get a alert that my To Do list has 2 items that don't match what is on my .MAC account. No matter what I select ( keep computer or use .MAC To Do's) I get the spinning death Ball. Tried lots of things short of reinstalling to no avail. Can't delete the To Do's.
I can't use Mail once the alert occurs. Answers?

Correct, it is an Adobe icon. The ball spun for 36 hours and just stopped. Then I could see it was an Adobe thing, and I was able to quit.
Problem over, thanks for the assist

  • Aperture albums and items missing, but they appear to be listed in apalbums

Greetings, all, I might be facing a lot of work to redo in my near future that I'd like to avoid. Any help would be appreciated.
I recently (about a week ago, and without any logical explanation that I could think of, unless my new Time Machine drive is more like a wrecking ball for Aperture) had several albums go missing from one particular project. The images in those albums are missing from the Aperture library as well. I've tried a database rebuild (took several hours) and also a consistency check (took several hours). Neither of those options seemed to change anything. The library size is about 100 GB, and it lives on an external hard drive. The files in question are from two days, and it's probably a few hundred at most. But they had all been edited. The masters are referenced across other external hard drives. The masters are fine and they are not missing.
All of my adjustments (and organization through Aperture and metadata) seem to have vanished. I've searched for the dates of missing files in the "All Photos" built-in smart album of the library, I've searched for "File Status:Missing" and I think I've tried about everything else I can think of. I've done many Internet forum searches, including one here in the Apple forums that came up with this unanswered post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8276709&#8276709
I've been unable to make any rhyme or reason of what has caused this problem. I'm starting to think there might not be an easy way to fix this problem and I might have to just re-tone, re-edit, and re-layout the book as well. That would be several hours of work that I'm not looking forward to.
If I look into the package contents of the Aperture library and go all the way down to the project where stuff is missing from, I can see all the albums there as "[album name].apalbum." When I take a look inside those files, I see what appears to be the information of my album in there, including a few hundred strings that are probably references to the images. Sadly, though, these xml documents that I've read were the beauty of Aperture because they had the potential to rebuild a broken database don't seem to be working.
My next idea, barring anything better that somebody pitches my way, is to export all the projects I've added or edited since the last vault update (Dec. 1) and then rebuild from the vault and reimport the projects that haven't been backed up. I'm not even sure this will work because I really don't know when this problem happened. I haven't been in those albums in probably at least a month.
Anybody have any ideas that might be a help to me?

    Update:
Thanks to these two posts that I ended up finding (links at the bottom), I only spent about two days working on this. The most time consuming part was testing this on a copy of the library, rebuilding the database to determine if it would work. After it did, I tried it on the real library.
Aperture sometimes seems a little quirky and I've been unable to figure out how my problem happened. I've been considering a move to Lightroom now for a while, and this issue is one thing that helps me want to move that direction. The other thing is that Apple didn't introduce non-destructive brush edits like Adobe, and it doesn't seem like this will happen anytime soon.
Anyway, I hope nobody else has this happen to them.

  • Aperture locks up when trying to update Vaults.

When I try to update vault I get the spinning beach ball and Aperture becomes unresponsive. I have to use force quit to exit the application.

I'm having the very same problem. This is bad news.  I upgraded to Mavericks last week, and then had to update Aperture.  Now it says my 400+GB library has to update, and then at the end it won't complete.  I've done this with a three months older copy of the library.
Apple, you need to figure this out--I'm a working professional and now I don't have access to 4-5 years worth of work--this is serious.  My library appears to be corrupted.

  • Can I remove a specific dated backup from time Capsule?

Sorry for the long story - but I have tried to provide as much detail as possible as to what is going on...
Sadly Lion has been a royal pain in the perverbial for me. It is slow (on a Macbook pro that is still within its warranty period so I don't believe that Hardware can be blamed - especially with upgraded ram and a 7200rpm drive) I recently got so frustrated with its clunkyness that I tried reinstalling on a new HDD and booting off that. Showed improvement (clean install vs upgraded and less apps etc slowing down the OS - however it is nowhere near what Snow Leopard was). But while I was at it I did something stupid. In hindsight very stupid - but balls to Apple for putting me in this situation and balls to Apple for letting me do it with no warning about the consequences...
I connected my old HDD via firewire and tried to access my files that are on it - I couldn't initially as my newly installed user did not have permission. Easy - Add the new user to permissions for folder concerned - apply to enclosed - done - Achieved what I wanted. Files accessed - test complete - sadly I will have to reinstall a clean lion and transfer my files over (restore from time capsule).
Two Major problems have surfaced. The first is directly related to the topic, the second I might try to repost in an appropriate section...
    1) What I didn't think about is as soon as I modified the permissions Time Capsule treats all the files in that folder as being modified. So it has backed up an entire new version of every file in that folder - a few hundred GB. That has chomped out 10-20% of my Time Capsule. I have no need for these backups and want to delete - say - every back up made since last Sunday when I committed the dirty deed. Seems minor - but this is a major compromise to my current arrangement.
    2) I have MAJOR permissions issues now. Firstly my Aperture library (which was in the folder with added user in the permissions) is fried. Can't be repaired/rebuild or anything. Lion wont do anything so useful as to tell me why - just get the colourwheel of death and the aperture library NEVER opens. Balls to Apple for allowing this to happen so easily. Second I tried to restore the entire pictures folder from Time Machine. It tells me I don't have permission??? WHAT. Double Balls. These are my freakin files - created by this user on this MBP on this install of Lion. I can't see how adding a user can suddenly prevent a long standing user from accessing their files from within their account. By the way the new install on the new HDD is no longer in play - all I am trying to do is continue to use my MBP the way I was before I did the test install.
My long running affinity for Mac is rapidly waning - I have wasted countless hours trying to regain access to ALL of my pictures - 14 years worth. 1000's of images. I cannot access them on my MBP, Can't restore them from Time Machine. This is the worst computing experience of my life.
I have tried booting from recovery, repairing permissions etc etc etc. Nothing mainstream solves this.
Does anyone have some wisdom to address my conundrum - I am seriously desperate here... I have genuinely decided that I will not waste the upcoming long weekend ******* around with this - I would rather forget my 14 years of stored memories and just get on with life... If unsolved by this Friday I will sell my Macbook Pro and iPad and initiate my own version of the post PC world - no computer at all - currently it is doing nothing but wasting my time.

    jameski wrote:
My only concern about resetting premissions (and ACL???) is that it will exacerbate my backup disk space wastage issue as it will result in full backup of my entire home folder (about 400GB).
Yup, if you changed the permissions on everything in your home folder, that will change them all back, so they'll all be backed-up again.
That will leave me with about 1.2TB of a 2TB TC used up with backups (currently should be about 500GB) - my plan was to have about 1.5TB of my TC available to use for files in the medium term until the need for more backup space pushed me to invest in another drive. TC's are just too expensive to waste like this.
Mixing backups and other data on the TC's internal HD will, eventually, cause conflicts.  But see #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for some possible workarounds.
If I do a complete restore from TM (entire account)
You can't do that.   You can't restore an entire home folder via the "Star Wars" display, because the home folder and default sub-folders (Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, etc.,) are protected.  You'd have to restore the contents of the sub-folders, a rather tedious process.
You can do a "full system restore" (OSX, apps, all user accounts & home folders), via a different procedure (Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14).
to the day before this shambles started - will time machine treat my restored account as a modification of all files and try to back up a fresh copy of everything on the basis that it has been modified - or is it smart enought to realise what I have done and carry on doing only incremental backups?
Anything you restore via the "Star Wars" display is considered as changed, so will be backed-up.
A full system restore (usually) results in only an incremental backup, but TM does a "deep scan" to compare everything on your system to the backups, to see what's different.  That will find that everything in your home folder has changed, so back it all up anyway.
If yes I will likely put all my historical backups onto a cheap 500GB drive and put it in a drawer and start new backups on TC
Good plan.   You probably know you can always view and restore from those, via the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per #17 in the FAQ.
After you do that, in theory, you could run the user home folder permissions reset, delete all the backups made after the original permissions change, then force a "deep scan" so the only differences found would be files that really are new or changed; but that's tedious, error-prone, and "iffy."
Are backups via TC inherently substantially slower than say to firewire drive?
Oh, yes, absolutely.  Here's a very rough comparison of full backup speeds (see #29 in the FAQ for details):
There's a lot of variation depending on your hardware and setup, of course.
I am running my TC through gigabit ethernet as wifi (despite having an ethernet extended AEP in my office) is too slow. I simply cannot get over the serious loss of performance since Lion and more recently the introduction of a TC. It is dire!
Some folks report WIFI backups slower under Lion vs. Snow Leopard, some think it's faster, others (including me) don't see much difference.
However, it really shouldn't make a whole lot of difference for normal incremental backups, as they should be relatively small and quick in most cases, and shouldn't have much impact on performance.  You might want to check the sizes of your backups -- if they seem too large considering what you've changed, see #D4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  If the sizes are reasonable, but the backups are still slow, or other performance seems to suffer, see #D2 there.
Are these your only backups?  If so, consider keeping "secondary" backups, to avoid having "all eggs in one basket."  See #27 in the FAQ for some suggestions.

  • I can't get into the safari discussion board.

    and firefox and opera are soooo lame. So, I'm going to post here;
I know I'm in the wrong board, but Firefox and Opera won't open the Safari discussion page. so here's trying here:
Hi, I use Safari 4.0.1 (there's my problem right there, probably), and although it crashes all the time, now it won't even start up. Please help me because Firefox is sooo lousy, I keep getting "Apple Discussions no longer exist" pages (or something to that effect) every time I hit a button.
I do a lot of editing on Wikipedia, and I'm always flipping back and forth from a page to the Top Sites page. The Top Sites page always gets the rainbow ball of death for some reason (I have "Medium" amount of Top Sites).
I went into the Top Sites manager, un-pinned one page, and then suddenly both Safari and my Mac turned into Windows XP and took forever for anything to get done.
Force quitting, then re-opening only results in a blank page with a rainbow death ball, and deleting 1200+ "preview" images from the cache didn't help either. Neither did a reboot.
So I'm most likely going to install the latest version of Safari because it is faster than Firefox and less cumbersome.
But I'm hoping someone may be able to tell me what loop or trap Safari got stuck in because that seems to be what happened:

  • Crashing a crash

    Hello:
This really isn't so much a question than an observation.
When using iMovie 4, I have found that after adding many transitions, titles, voiceovers and background music, sometimes imovie may start to act as if it is going to quit. However, I save very often so that if it does crash I can just open it again and go from there.
Lately, though, when it starts to act up and I get the spinning ball, I have found that if I simply click a few times on the iMovie Icon in the dock, it skips right over the death ball and continues uninterrupted.
Just thought perhaps this little hint would save others from unnecessary frustration.

Thanks, Sue. I learned my lesson the hard way (losing a fair amount of work on a video/still/music project), so I try to save frequently -- but I sometimes forget. This is a good tip.

  • Aperture 3 (trial) & the Spinning Beachball of Death...

I have downloaded the A3 trial version...no problem...unpacked & installed the program and applied the serial number...no problem...imported my iPhoto library...seemingly no problem...EG the photos appeared just fine and then the "importing" message below became "processing" and shortly after that...THE SPINNING BEACH BALL OF DEATH APPEARED!
...and it won't go away! The program is totally locked up! In fact the only way to stop it is to use "force quit" from the icon on the menu bar.
When I attempted a restart...same thing all over again...
I even left the SBBofD and the "processing" message alone for many hours...nothing...it just keeps going and going and going.
    So...any suggestions please?
    Cheers!

Sounds fine. AP3 has to do a massive conversion job to build previews and index your images. Has a similar task to index all of your faces. This is a one-time process, but it takes about 5 - 10 seconds per image and that can translate to hours of time.
    Suggestions:
-- First of all, be sure that you are running the latest release of the Mac OS and Aperture.
-- Don't force quit - you risk damaging the data base. Don't use Aperture during this time; let it run.
*-- * Click on the Activity Monitor or simply click on the word "processing" at the bottom of the screen. It should give you a display that shows what is happening and what is queued. As long as the numbers are incrementing, go get some coffee. (Maybe two.) If it reaches a number (X of Y) and hangs for a time, say an hour, then you may have a problem and you need to talk to Apple.
Once the conversion is completed, Aperture 3 is very fast.

  • I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it

I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).

  • Spinning Beach Ball of Death (Mainly from idle)

    Hey folks..
This might be a long one, so please bare with me !
After about 3 fabulous faultless years of using my Macbook Pro, recently I've had lots of issues with the dreaded spinning beach ball of death !
I wish I could say I was able to narrow it down to one application or one specific event, but sadly it's proving to not be that easy!
Recently, the SBBOD has appeared MOSTLY when the macbook is sitting there idle. I tried all the suggestions I could find on the forums - ie not putting the HDD to sleep, etc etc.
What generally happens, is I come back to the computer - and try to open an application (doesn't matter which one) and it bounces in the dock, and then the SBBOD appears, I can usually get to try and open other apps as this is happening, but in 20 seconds or so - everything is frozen except the mouse. I have tried leaving it for 5 mins, 10mins 2 hours, but in the end the only option is to manually turn off and swtich it back on. I thought it might have been just my user, but I tested when leaving it idle when other users logged on, and in the end - the same SBBOD
This started happening about 3 weeks ago, when I was on Leopard (not snow).
I tried to make sure the HDD was ok - so I install the SmartReporter app to monitor it - and nothing is pointing towards a HDD failure? SMART status is always showing ok.
In the end, I backed up and formatted the HDD. I bought a copy of Snow Leopard and did a total fresh install. I didn't migrate any applications, just user data and re-install all Applications etc.
I have Clean My Mac installed and MainMenu which runs all the repair permissions, and I keep it really clean and efficient since the fresh install - but still, the SBBOD is coming whenever I have the machine idle. I tried also, to install the smcFanControl to cool the CPU incase, it was over heating and then failing??
So, in conclusion (thanks for reading this far !!) I really don't know what else to do?
Seeing as it happened to all users logged in, I can assume it's not user specific?
Meaning it could very likely actually be a HDD issue?
Are there any good free diagnostic tools to see if it is a HDD issue?
I'm almost tempted to buy a new HDD, and install that and not use the Migration Assistant to bring files across, but to just manually bring my information and documents.. thus creating the user from scratch? Are there any opinions on the Samsung SpinPoint M7's ?
Honestly - I'm at a loss here, I can't see what else I can do?
It's a Macbook Pro MA609LL from 2007 3Gb RAM, with a Samsung 500GB HDD (added way back in Nov 2008)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    CIAO!
    Alessandro

I would try running the extended version of your Apple Hardware Test.
It's not perfect but may flag something.

  • Beach Ball of Death on OSX while trying to upload large files(updated)

    Hi,
I did a search on this and while I got lots of hits none on this issue.
We have a web portal that allows customers to upload files to a DAM server, we have control server.
The issue is not the back end, the back end is php and all set up correctly, we have 2gb ram assigned to php, the upload_max_filesize is set to 1.8gb max post size is set accordingly.
The flex app loads, user selects large file say 1.6gb ( we do file size check to make sure its below the limit), click upload button, beach ball of death shows, a little while later the file uploads.
Great so far, now the user tries another files same size, beach ball of death, script times out (we capture this and end gracefully). If the user restarts safari then the file will upload just fine.
Seems you can upload a large file first time and small files subsequently below 1.2gb, but you can not upload multiple large files.
Seems some sort of memory leak, I was looking at converting this upload app to send files via ftp, but if the flash player needs to process/load the files first then I don't think this will work looking to increase the file size ceiling to 4gb via ftp.
Code is a bit involved but in the end just calls file reference upload, then beach ball appears
Any ideas? player version 10.0.32.18 debug
    UPDATED 09_17_09
It appears to be a memory leak in the player when in safari, the file is read but the memory not freed up after completion. Firefox frees the used memory after upload and you can continue. Not sure if Apple or Adobe issue.
However why bother reading the file first? can we have an HTP stream file upload in the web flash player like AIR as. This way the player would not care on the file size and the limitation would reside on the server, which we can deal with.
