Death in the family - iPad unlock?

I have a fairly strange question, but one that I'm sure some people have had to deal with. My girlfriend had a death in the family. This person had an iPad with the password lock turned on. Is there any way to unlock the device without erasing everything? Unfortunately, I'm sure this kind of scenario could be used by thieves trying to use a stolen device so it seems like Apple might not be quick to unlock it. I just don't even know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that was used to sync with so that you can restore the app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.
Instructions can be found here.

You will probably have to use recovery mode.

  • How do I stop texts that I write on my iPhone 6 from appearing on the family iPad?

    When I recently got my iPhone six and activated that I noticed that any messages I wrote on the iPhone 6 pop up on the family shared iPad. And vice versa all text that are coming in are now going to both devices. How do I only have my text messages stay on my iPhone. And messages I send from the eye pad just stay on the iPad? Is this even possible?

    You have to use different contact addresses on both devices.
    On the iPad, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive at>You can be reached by iMessages at> Uncheck your iPhone 6 phone number in there if it shows up in that setting. I assume that it will appear there or you would not be getting the messages on the iPad that are sent to and from your phone.
    You will need to select another contact address in there to text to and from. I realize that families share iPads like they share computers, but .... iPads are not designed to allow for easy texting from multiple "user accounts". Technically multiple user accounts do not exist on iOS devices but you can add additional email addresses as the contact address to use for Messages. You may want to create one generic email address to use to text from on the iPad or if using your email address as the contact address is OK with you to use for the whole family, then select your email address.

    I think you should read the specs again http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
    Both the AT&T and Verizon iPad have GSM sim slots and will work throughout the world on GSM networks.

  • Death in the family/Back charges

    OK, so long story short, my mom died back in April. She was the head of the account, which also included my sister's phone, and my own.
    For a variety of reasons(legal, financial, personal) I was not able to find myself in a position to cancel my mother's plan until now/tomorrow (didn't have the death certificate for a while, wasn't named head of the estate until recently, have been living off little/no money the last couple weeks, am a college student on a very limited budget and also paying for funeral stuff,  etc).
    So, in that time, the account has accumulated about $350 in back bills. Tomorrow, when I go into the store, I will cancel my mother's and sister's numbers, while attempting to keep my own under a new/revised Verizon plan.
    I know I don't have to pay any ETF's for lines my mom was paying for(at least I don't think I do), but will I need to pay the back bills, also? It wasn't my intention to allow this to manifest into the situation it's become, but I wouldn't have been able to get the phone in my name until recently, and would have probably not been able to make the first payment anyway.

    So even if both lines I am canceling were in my mother's name, I'd still have to possibly pay an ETF on one of the accounts? That just doesn't seem right.
    but she wont be cancelling them, you will when you take over the account
    they may, and most likley should, wave any etf for your mothers line
    your sisters line i doubt it
    you could always just try and close the account alltogether, see if they wave anything that way
    then open a new one in your name, you would have a different number though

  • Unlocked Version Wi-Fi + 4G LTE 64 GB of "The New iPad" ?

    is the Unlocked Version Wi-Fi + 4G LTE 64 GB of "The New iPad" available for Pre-Order ? I did not see it on the Pre-Order site ?
    I have to use it outside the U.S !

    iPads sold in the US are not locked. 4G in the New iPad will only work on the Verizon or AT&T LTE networks. 3G will work anywhere as long as there is an iPad 3G plan and sim card provided by the local carrier.
    Also the data plans are no-commitment ones (Refer: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad/select_ipad)
    No–commitment data plans from AT&T or Verizon
    In the U.S., you can choose from data plans with no long-term contract.

    I have the free version of this app that limits you to a 5MB file, but it does work. It requires iOS 3.1. I'm not sure how well the paid version works or what the limitations are.

    You should be able to turn it off on the iPad by using 'a tap-to-select and then double-tap to activate/type process' and 3 fingered scrolling to go into Settings > General > Accessibility and turn it 'off' (so to use the 'slide to unlock' tap the slider and then double-tap it, and to type your passcode tap a digit and then double-tap it etc), or you can do it by connecting to your computer's iTunes : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4064

  • I never set a passcode for my iPad but it is locked and I can't get it unlocked.  The "slide to unlock" does not work.  How do I get it unlocked?

    I never set up a passcode for my iPad 2 but it is locked and I can't unlock it.  The "slide to unlock" does not work.  Any suggestions on how to unlock it?

    You have to slide to unlock to bring up the keyboard if a passcode is set. If you can't slide then try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
    Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    If you still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom
    If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
    If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
    You may have to force iPad/iPod into Recovery Mode
  • We just bought our boys iPad minis.  We have a "family ipad" now with lots of music and apps the boys love.  Will syncing them to icloud cause a nightmare with calendars, music, and emails etc being shared?
    We just bought our children 2 ipad minis.  We have a "family ipad" now that contains lots of their apps, music, books etc.  I am afraid to connect the minis to icloud for fear they will also sync our calendars, email, etc.  Does anyone have experience with a family using icloud and do you recommend starting over with everyone having their own account or merging the family?
    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
    Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud too.
    You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
    The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photostream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.
    Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up
