Deauthorizing my Computer for iTunes

I have a Windows based laptop. There is an error in the operating system that will not let me open iTunes any more. (iTunes worked fine for a long time, and the error just started one day.) The guy in the genius bar could not figure it out. He suggests that I re-load the operating system.
So, can someone tell me how I can deauthorize this computer, if I cannot open iTunes? Is there a way?
At some point, I'll probably reload the operating system, but for now, and before I do that, I need to deauthorize this laptop. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Maile

Okay, let's try swapping out your QuickTime one more time, taking a few additional explicit precautions this time.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

I have a new computer and I want to make it my home device for I tunes. I have home sharing, and all of the music and files are on the new computer. Now what do I do to make the new computer the home computer for Itunes?

The computer (windows platform) where I initially began using Itunes has four other computers/devices that are shared with it. All four of the other computers show up in my account, and can be managed. Or I can remove them. But on the new computer that I want to be my base computer (home if you will). The computer I want it to replace, when ITunes is open, has a tool bar, with various functions. All of the other devices are linked to that computer in ITunes, under Home SHaring. The new computer, shows the downloads via Home Sharing, but it does not show/have any tool bar.
I want to activate the new computer to be the computer via ITunes where all of the devices are linked to it as the base for ITunes. And, I don't know how to make that happen.
    I hope that makes sense.

  • Unable to authorize This Computer for iTunes

About 8 months ago I installed iTunes on one of my desktops (Windows) and setup the store access and actually purchased the OS update for my iTouch. Yesterday I purchased an iPad for my wife and started to set it up on her laptop. I've installed iTunes 9.1 and attempted to "Authorize This Computer" for iTunes purchases, I also attempted to do this on my laptop (both are running Win7 x64). Per the iTunes screen an email was sent to my account but I never receive it. Prior to the attempt to authorize the two computers from my wife's laptop I issued a request to reset my password. This email I received and reset the password. I then received a confirmation email that the password was reset.
Why cannot I receive the emails to authorize my two laptops?

In the iTunes window click on Store > Authorize This Computer
In the "Authorize This Computer" I enter my email and password, click on the "Authorize" button.
A new window pops up title "You have not verified your account", Click OK to review the instructions on how to verify your account.
I click on the OK button and then the iTunes main window informs me that an email as been sent to my account and it displays my email address.
I never receive the email and I have zero idea what to do at this point.
The link you provided is about "Authorizing a computer allows you to manage which computers can play music, videos, audiobooks, or other content purchased from the iTunes Store" - This sounds like what I want to do but I cannot authorize either my computer or my wife's computer. At this point nether of us have or can purchase anything using my iTunes account.
At this point I'm totally confused and upset and very close to returning the **** iPad. I thought this was going to be a simple process but it is turning into a can of worms.
What I'm attempting to do is have one iTunes store account where either myself or my wife can purchase.

  • I have just bought the new mac and can't set it up as my main computer for iTunes

I have just bought the new mac and have synced it with my ipod but the ipod is not the primary computoer for itunes.
My old computer is the primary one
I have synced my ipad but the apps did not transfer to my mac
    any help would be appreciated
    thx

You have me confused as to where the apps really are. You mention iPod and mention that the iPod isn't your primary computer. Obviously, it can't be - its an iPod. I'm not trying to be a jerk - I just dont understand what that means.
The you say that the old computer is the primary computer for iTunes. That makes more sense. Anyway, you could have transferred the iTunes library from the old computer to the new Mac, but I assume that you did not realize that.
So ... If the apps are on your iPad - but did not transfer to iTunes when you synced the iPad with the new Mac - transfer Purchases. Connect the iPad to the Mac, launch iTunes, right click on the iPad name on the left and select Transfer Purchases. That will put the apps in iTunes on the Mac.
Movies cannot be downloaded again for free because Apple does not have an agreement with the movie studios to allow for that. At least that is how I understand the way that works.

  • Which store do you go to, to authorize your computer for itunes!?!?!?!? o.O

Hi... look i am having SO much trouble! I can't figure which store you go to to authorize your computer for itunes purchases! Help please!

As you appear to be in Canada, you would want to log on to the Canadian iTunes Store. Do you already have an iTunes Store account? If you have purchases, I'm guessing you do.
I'm not entirely sure what your actual problem is. Is there a particular error message you're getting? What, exactly, is happening. The more details you give, the better the answers you'll get.
    Best of luck.

  • HT1420 How do I authorise my computer for iTunes when there is no "authorize this computer" or Advanced menu ?  When Apple say Store menu do they mean from the top of the store when logged in ?

Where is the iTunes Store menu that has Authorize this Computer located and/or Advanced menu ? How do I authorise my computer for iTunes if I cannot find Authorize this Computer or Advanced menu ?  Thank you.

It's done via the Store drop-down menu at the top of iTunes - if you are using iTunes 11 on a PC then pressing Alt-S should get the Store menu to appear e.g. (screenshot is from a Mac, but it should be similar on a PC) :

i have previously had computers authorised for itunes but all have been thrown away or are now so broken that they do not even turn on! Please can someone tell me how I can de-authourise them and authorise at least 1 new computer? I have lost alot of music etc from CD's but I'd at least like to be able to get back what I bought from itunes.
    Many thanks for your help.

Follow the instructions in the article from which the question was posted to Deauthorize ALL computer then authorize the one's that you actually have/use.

  • Insufficient privileges, permissions error, cannot authorise computer for Itunes

I am trying to authorise my computer to itunes and get this error message: "The required file was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed."
How do I add my computer to the devices on itunes if I do not appear to have the correct privileges or permissions?

Yes, this worked for me.  I was hesitant to use terminal b/c I know that an error could wipe out my hard drive or render my computer unusable.  So to be SURE I didn't make an error, I carefully copied the command from that page you recommended and *pasted* it into terminal.  In my case, the folder was there, so I needed the command to change permissions on the folder, not to create one.  What was confusing for me was that the iTunes error message said to change permissions in the FINDER, which is what I was trying to do.  It didn't mention Terminal, and people who are not computer savvy or comfortable using a command line app will be intimidated by Terminal.  What would really be helpful is if Apple included a link to a page like this in their error message.
Also, before I could do anything in terminal, I had to go change my admin password (it had been a blank password before and that's not acceptable for making changes in Terminal).  People need to know how to do that, too.  For the casual user who just wants to watch or listen to their iTunes purchases, this can all be pretty intimidating and frustrating.  I like to experiment and see what different GUI commands do, and try out freeware, but even I am cautious about using Terminal.
