Debugging JSP / Servlets
Hi All
For some reason I am not able to debug my JSP / Servlets using
JDeveloper 9i.
When I place the breakpoints, the application / project doesnt
stop near the break points.
Any suggestions ???

I looked at your code I here are a few things you might consider:
It looks like you are putting freely typed-in comments from end-users into an xml document.
The problem with this is that the user may enter characters in his text that have special meaning
to xml and will have to be escaped correctly. Some of these characters are less than character, greater than character and ampersand character.
You may also have a similiar problem displaying them on your JSP page since there may be special characters that JSP has.
You will have to read up on how to deal with these special characters (I dont remember what the rules are). I seem to recall
if you use CDATA in your xml, you dont have to deal with those characters (I may be wrong).
When you finish writing your code, test it by entering all keyboard characters to make sure they are processed, stored in the database,
and re-displayed correctly.
Also, it looks like you are putting business logic in your JSP page (creating an xml file).
The JSP page is for displaying data ONLY and submitting back to a servlet. Put all your business logic in the servlet. Putting business logic in JSP is considered bad coding and will cause you many hours of headache trying to debug it. Also note: java scriptlets in a JSP page are only run when the JSP page is compiled into a servlet by java. It does not run after its compiled and therefore you cant call java functions after the JSP page is displayed to the client. -

nullYou can debug JSPs and Servlets in JDeveloper locally in the IDE itself, or remotely.
To debug locally within JDeveloper, simply place breakpoints anywhere in the source code and choose Run | Debug from the main menu. The JSP is run using Oracle's Web-to-Go server.
Remote debugging requires a little more setup. See the online help for more information. -
Debugging JSPs using Visual Cafe
I am using WL 5.1 and trying to figure out how to debug JSPs using Visual Cafe 4.0.(Enterprise Edition). The JSP file is running fine if I use plain "javac" for compilation. If I change the compiler to include -g option (for debug), I get the following error.

assuming you are running on Windows, you can use a .cmd file with the
following command in it
javac -g %*
if you name it c:/java/bin/javac.cmd, then replace the line with
compileCommand=C:/java/bin/javac.cmd,\

Yes, just the same way as you do with normal Java classes. Run the server in debug modus and put breakpoints in the source file.
But do you have business logic (scriptlets?) in your JSP then? I'd to put them in separate Java classes (Servlet, Bean, DAO, Utility, etc). It will greatly ease unit testing and debugging (and also maintenance!). -

Try converting the .jsp files to Java files then compiling to .class files
and deploying as Servlets. Then you can easily debug with any debugger
supporting WL.

How to remote debug JSPs on Tomcat 5.0 from JDev 10.1.2
I can remote debug Java applications and servlets. But I can not make it stop within any JSP pages while doing remote debug. I have no problem if I debug locally within the built-in OC4J server.
I set my project properties with remote debugging -> Attaching to JPDA. I start my tomcat using catalina jpda start after setting environment variables JPDA_ADDRESS=8000 and JPDA_TRANSPORT=dt_socket.

Tomcat 4.1.31 ( version 5.x.x won't work as it needs jdk 1.5 at least, and jdev is configured to run with 1.4 )I was able to use Jdeveloper 9.0.5 to debug a servlet running in Tomcat 5.5.9 with jdk 1.5.0. I would belive there is no fundamental obstacle for Jdeveloper 10.1.2 to debug Tomcat 5.x.x, thanks to the nature of JPDA.
a- backup $TOMCAT$\bin\catalina.bat.
b- edit $TOMCAT$\bin\catalina.bat to include the following:
set JAVA_OPTS=%JAVA_OPTS% -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=NONE
-Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=8000Another way is to set your environment variable JAVA_OPTS. There is then no need to modify catalina.bat. -

Using JSP/Servlet to write Word Document to BLOB

When I use a normal class with a main method, it loads the word document into a blob and I can read this 100%.Stunning.
With a JSP/Servlet I cannot get the document out again. The "format" seems to be lost.

there are multiple documents out there, describing the oracle reports server setup. try doc.oracle.com for documentation.
also it is part of the online-documentation.
you need to install 9iAS enterprise edition. the server is pre-configured and will listen to the url http://yourserver/dev60cgi/rwcgi60.exe
passing only this url you will get a help-screen, describing the syntax.

How can I call EJB from JSP/Servlets in iWS?
Hi!!
My JSP/Servlets are on iWS, and I deploy EJB on iAS.
In this case, I don't know how JSP/Servlet call EJb on iAS.
I'd like to know how I can set JNDI name in JSP/Servlet on iWS.
I will thank you if you give me a simple example source using JSP/Servlet
and EJB.

Why Are you running your JSP/Servlets in iWS instead of iAS? For whatever
reason,
look at the Converter sample from iAS. You will be doing RMI/IIOP in this
case and the sample explains in detail what to do.

You can lookup a JNDI resource from anywhere in java code you want to. As long as you have a repository set up to search on :-)
Of course whether that resource is available or not is a different matter. If you let the server set up the JNDI resource for you, then you can't run it standalone outside the server without something else setting the same thing up :-)
So its not so much a limitation of beans, but just the environment you run the code in.
Best practice? Don't write sql queries in JSP pages :-)
For the rest you might consider the DAO pattern. Or ignore SQL altogether and let hibernate do the work there for you.

How to implement this function in JSP/Servlet env?
Hi all,
I working on a project, it provides functionality to upload file using JSP/Servlet. In the first JSP page, there is file location and submit button. After user select a file to upload and click submit button, a message, like "sending file to XXXX", will be shown on the screen. Once uploading and validation are done on the server-side, a successful/error msg will be shown to user.
Here I have a question for the "sending..." msg and the successful/error msg. They should be put in one jsp page or in two separate page? how to implement them?

TranquilFor the sending message... Well, the thing is, when you click submit, it's sending the file to the server and the server is processing it, and this is all done before the "complete" page is sent to the server. So one would need to use some Javascript on the page before the actual submit happens to show some message. This is done on Ebay when you put something for sale, you can upload an image, and there is a little popup message telling you that it's uploading, and it is removed when the process is done. Now, I'm not sure the exact details of how this works, but my educated guess is this:
1) The onsubmit function of the form checks that the file upload fields have a value (no need to popup a message if no file upload, since that's what usually takes the time, although it could just be assumed there is a file). If a file is to be uploaded, or just want to show the message anyway, a new popup window is opened with the window.open method and the "sending" message is shown (either written via Javascript or just load a small web page to the window).
2) The popup window, since you can't transfer the window object from the form page to the next page, has to check window.opener for some value that the success/error page would have to set. The success/error page could use it's body onload function to set a variable in it's own window object to denote that the page is loaded. The popup window can use a looping check using setTimeout or setInterval in Javascript to check for window.opener.isLoadedVariable to be present, and if so, close itself.
I've never done that, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. -

ThanksYou need to use the Oracle jdbc driver. Apparently, the Weblogic JDBC driver is being selected:
weblogic.jdbc.rmi.SerialPreparedStatement
The Oracle JDBC classes can be found in <ORACLE_HOME>/jdbc/lib/See <ORACLE_HOME>/jdbc/readme.txt for how to specify the correct class path in the application.
I would have thought that the oracle JDBC driver would have been selected (if in the classpath) or an exception would be raised if the Oracle JDBC driver was not found.... because the code should include:
DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
This should load the Oracle jdbc driver and classes, not the weblogic ones. IF the Oracle JDBC drivers are not found, an exception should be raised... -

After adding it, you can access both request parameters and the uploaded files easily. It's more transparent than Apache Commons File Upload. There is sufficient documentation to get you started, and there is a forum if you have any questions.
