Deciding whether to upgrade to 5th gen device

I've had a 1st (possibly 2nd?) generation iPod touch for almost 4 years and I'm considering getting one of the new 5th gen devices now that the battery life is pretty bad on my old one. I will probably never use iCloud for a variety of reasons, the most important one being limited access to wifi.
I mainly use my iPod touch to listen to music and podcasts; as an alarm clock/timer; to show photos to people; and I run a few apps, such as a ToDo app, and many games. I'm looking forward to having a camera on the new device.
My questions:
1) Will the new iPod touch work okay with my "old" MacBook Pro which is currently running OSX 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.3? Will I have to update either the OS or iTunes?
2) Will my old apps still work? Some of them are no longer available in the app store, but I'd like to continue using them. What about the data associated with the apps?  Does that transfer to the new device?
3) What will and what won't work with no wi-fi and no iCloud?
3A) I understand that calendars and contacts have absolutely no way of syncing with my computer without iCloud. Does that include when I first get the iPod, not being able to populate it?
3B) I do very occasionally use wi-fi at the library or something like that to check my email and use Safari. Will that functionality change at all?
3C) Can I get photos onto my computer from the iPod (or the other way around) with no iCloud? I use iTunes to choose which photos to have on there to show to people now.
3D) What else will be different that I'm not thinking of?
4) How much free space is there on a fresh-out-of-the-box 32GB model?
Thanks for the information.

1) With Mac OS X 10.6 yes, but not with iTunes 10.6.3. You'll need to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.
2) It depends entirely on the specific app. Some may work without problems, some may work but with glitches, and some may not work at all. We can't give you any sort of blanket statement on the subject.
3) Without meaning to sound flip, anything that requires a network connection won't work without WiFi, such as network games, AirPlay, over-the-air synching, etc. Without iCloud you won't have backup sans a computer, document synching, and of course the other features of iCloud.
3A) With Mac OS X 10.6.8 you'll still get synching of calendar, contacts etc. via iTunes. That was lost only with OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
3B) No, other than the interface differences.
3C) Yes.
3D) Difficult to say. The interface will be quite difference from iOS 3/4, but most people have little problem adapting. You might want to peruse the user's guide before you buy to inform yourself of the new features and interface:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipod_touch_user_guide.pdf
4) I believe it's around 27GB out of the box, but someone else here who has a 32GB model can probably say with certainty.
Regards.

  • Trying to decide whether to upgrade CS3 to CS5

I've had CS3 Design Premium for a few years but never really used it much except for Photoshop.  Now I'm starting up a blog and have been reading and learning just how useful many of the other programs could be for me, but before I put a lot of effort into learning the CS3 programs I have, I wonder if there are any really dramatic advantages to upgrading to CS5 and learning that instead.
Is CS5 so much more amazingly awesome than my dusty old CS3 that I should upgrade?   What are some of the real advances over CS3?  One thing that would make me inclined would be if the CS5 programs were a lot better at efficiently using my hardware (I have an i3 and NVIDIA 330 in my laptop and would like to get the most out of them).
Anyone have any advice?  Did you upgrade and were blown away?
    Thanks for any thoughts!

You need to tell us what programs you're using. The programs I use regularly, InDesign, Photoshop and Dreamweaver all have dramatically improved. I have a couple of articles on my website about InDesign. For CS5: http://www.theindesignguy.com/cs5-thoughts.shtml and for CS4: http://www.theindesignguy.com/cs4-thoughts.shtml
You might want to pop into the actual application forums for the apps you use to make a decision. You can get a decent deal on the Design Premium upgrade at Amazon right now: http://amzn.to/9zAnwa $30 off, no shipping and most likely no sales tax collected.
You can also download demos of any program you want to test drive.
    Hope that helps,
    Bob

  • IPod 5th gen device keeps pausing and playing music randomly

Self explanatory. Don't know why this started happening. I take good care of my iPod too. Resetting my iPod doesn't do anything. Sometimes Siri randomly pops up too. Even when my iPod is locked, these problems are still occurring. Please reply back to me ASAP

    If no earphones attached then:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Ipod 5th Gen is stuck on the apple logo with the loading bar not moving

So I recently decided to restore my iPod 5th gen to factory settings, because I plan on selling it to a friend. When I chose the option to erase all data and reset settings, the iPod turned off, and then came to the black background with the apple logo in the middle. After watching it turn on and off, and not do anything for at least an hour, I searched for answers on the forum. I found that I should reset my iPod by holding the center button and the top right button at the same time for at least ten seconds, or until the device shuts off and then the apple logo is visible again. After I did this, once again, the black background with the apple logo popped up, this time with a loading bar beneath it. After an hour or two of checking on the progress bar, I noticed that it had not made any progress whatsoever. It had not moved an inch since I first started it. What do I do?

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Advice needed on whether to upgrade or not...

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade my operating system from Mac OS X v.10.2.8 but am worried that some applications may not work if I do. I am using Adobe Photoshop 7, Microsoft Office X, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX... I haven't upgraded the OS yet because I'm not technically knowledgeable and it's all a bit over my head! One of the main reasons that I am considering upgrading is that I can't get certain podcasts because I can't get itunes u, because I can't upgrade my itunes because I need OS X v.3 or higher. And I have also noticed that Software Update hasn't found any updates since Jan. 2007 and I'm wondering if this is because there aren't any more updates available for OS X v.10.2.8 because it is old? I would be very grateful for any information or advice. Thanks in advance!

At this point with all of the current complaints of the OS X 10.5 release you might want to wait. Not only are there some issues with 3rd party apps, but currently there are enough issues with Leopard itself that I would suggest holding off until they fix most of the problems. I am finding it hard to troubleshoot if the problem is with the application or with Leopard itself. I figure that since Leopard can't even view JPEG files properly as thumbnails, in cover flow, or even in Preview properly, who knows what else is wrong with it right now.

  • Made HDD, Battery and case upgrades to my ipod video 5th Gen and now I am told "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."

I have a 5th Gen iPod Video that I have had many years now.  It has worked faithfully until about 2 weeks ago and the HDD totally died on me.
So I decided to upgrade from a 30 to 60 gb HDD, replaced the battery for the appropriate HDD and bought a new back shell for the unit.  I made incremental installations as parts arrived.  First the HDD itself and the next day the battery.  Both went in with no problem and I have been running them in a jerry rigged case (basically the 30gb back case has been taped together to make sure it was going to work OK.  I have been taking it to work with absolutely no issues, great response and great battery life.  Synching is fabulous.
Here is the issue, I hope this makes sense...
Today I received my 60 GB silver back cover and moved all of my parts over.  It seems to fit fine.  Headphone jack is working fine.  However, now the hold button is unresponsive (which is not a big loss to me but still just so you know).  I can play music and I can sync.  However, if I restart the unit, or I try synching a second time, I get screen saying "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."  It does not matter if I snap it shut or leave the case loose, this happens.
I have this error until I open my case up again and do nothing else.  At that time, the error goes away, and my ipod is fine again.  Then, the screen comes back after restarting to a normal boot.  But, if I sync or restart without doing anything else, we go through the motions again until I open the case back up.
I have disconnected the battery as well as the HDD, but still have the problem.  I have also disconnected the cable coming from the hold button/earphone jack to the M/B,
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue or have any suggestions.

Shouldn't you contact the vendor or person who sold the back cover?  At the very least, it has a Hold switch that doesn't work.
This web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
and they call it "Headphone Jack & Hold Switch"
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+5th+Generation+%28Video%29+Headphone+Jack+%26+H old+Switch+Replacement/604
Under Relevant Parts, they seem to list separate parts for the thick and thin back cover.
On a side note, another way to fix your iPod is to use a compact flash card instead of a hard drive.  This web page has details
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-your-5th-Gen-iPod-Video-to-use-Flash-Mem or/
Then, you can use your existing thin profile back cover that works.  I replaced the hard drive in my 4th gen iPod with a CF card.  Currently, it is only 8GB, but with lower prices these days, I may soon upgrade it with a 64GB CF card.  But it works great with the 8GB card.  The iPod is noticeably lighter.  There is no hard drive spin-up delay.  The battery lasts longer per charge.  And it is no doubt more shock-resistant.

  • IPod 5th gen frozen after upgrading to iOS 8

I was able to download and install of iOS 8 on my iPod 5th gen (no iSight camera version). Everything went great, no errors or warnings. After it installed and the iPod reset, it is now stuck on a white screen with a black Apple and the progress bar. It has been stuck on this screen with the progress bar about 5/6 of the way across for hours.
It is still shows in iTunes with the model, capacity, and the check for update, restore iPod, backup now, and restore backup buttons. iTunes says it is on iOS 8. When I click on any of the above buttons, I get a message that "Find my iPod must be turned off before iPods can be restored." I feel like a ******* not turning Find My iPod it off before upgrading, but it should have told me to turn if off before upgrading.
I cannot power the iPod off to try to reset it, nothing happens.
Am I screwed and now have a metal and glass brick, or is there anything I can do?

  • I upgraded to itunes 10.6 and I can't manually sunc to my ipod nano 5th gen anymore. I have re-installed itunes, restored my ipod and tried it dozens of times

I upgraded to itunes 10.6 and with that "upgrade" I can't manually sunc to my ipod nano 5th gen anymore. I have re-installed itunes, restored my ipod, tried syncing under another users account and everything else I can think of. It syncs ok upon initial start-up but then when I tryp to select podcasts or music to sync to it, itunes crashes. Now that I restored my ipod, I can't even get my old podcasts much less add new ones.

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

    Lindsay,
Your iBookG4 is still a pretty awesome Mac. Like already said, it has the power to run Leopard, but it depends if you have an internal DVD drive.
Then I suppose you have to add up the cost of the OS, perhaps another 512MB RAM, iLife 08 and replacements for any favourite apps that you currently use (Leopard breaks a lot of stuff, but Intel breaks even more). Compare it to the cost of a new MacBook, which wil have all of that included and be 3-4x faster too.
It also depends on what you want to achieve with your iBook. My PMG4 still cuts it today, I still use it in preference to my new Mac Pro, It's about the same age as your iBook, and I'll only stop using it when it becomes "painfully" slow. My 1 year old son currently uses the Mac Pro (parts for a Mac Pro are easier to replace than those for a PMG4).
I think your choice is simple, if you can a cheap copy of Tiger, use that, it'll get your iPod Touch up and running. It came in DVD and 4 CD version (by request).
Leopard will work for you too but a lot of the best eye-candy requires quite a meaty graphics card and you may need a RAM upgrade and replacement software - OS9 Classic is not supported in Leopard.

  • Why does my 5th gen airport extreme go on the fritz and disconnect all 2.4GHz devices when one device connects with 5GHz? I've done some research and it seems other people have had this problem too? I'm very frustrated and want my money back

Running an apple tv 3rd gen, iPod 4th gen, iPhone 4s, windows vista laptop, and Xbox 360 with media center. 2.4GHz devices work great when apple TV is connected with ethernet, but as soon as I switch the apple tv to wireless, the 5th gen AEBS kicks over to 5GHz, my 2.4GHz devices lose connection and I can't reconnect my 2.4GHz devices, until I do a hard reset of my AEBS and reconfig the network with my iPhone, if I use the airport application for PC, my wireless devices still won't connect. I bought this router 20 days ago so I could run dual band wireless, if I wanted to limit all my stuff to 2.4ghz, I would've got a g router and saved some money. This thing supposedly has 3 antennas, one for 2.4, one for 5, and one for the guest network, so why do I loose my 2.4 when it "switches" to 5GHZ if it's supposedly always broadcasting both freq's????????

I had a problem with dual bands running almost everything you have there. When I'd have a iPad and MacBook running, I'd turn on my 360 and I'd loose all connections though. Until a hard reset and the same cycle. I returned my airport a day later for a new one. No problems since. I had a faulty one. Not saying yours is, but mine was. I troubleshooted everything from options, manual setup, everythinggggggggg. It was a wasted 7plus hours to find out it was faulty. I have a pc, MacBook, apple tv, 360, and 2 iPads using it now flawless.

  • My iPod 5th gen is no longer charging. I've cleaned out lint, switched chargers, and reset the device more times than I can count. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to fix it, or if it's a lost cause.

I've had my iPod touch 5th gen for a little over 2 years now. a few weeks ago, I went to plug my iPod into the charger. After about 20 minutes I went to go get it so I could reply to texts and clear some notifications and I noticed that it was still at 20%. So I tried a different cord, different outlet, cleaned out any lint that might be in there, and reset the iPod more than once. Nothing worked. Eventually the problem corrected itself. But then it happened again a few days later. And then it happened just recently, and now it's happening again. In total it's happened 4 times, the first 3 times its corrected itself, but this time it's not. I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do, or if it's just a lost cause.
