Deck control disapeared

I've been merrily using a Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro for ages now, turned everything off last night, all working fabulous, turned on this morning and the deck control has disappeared within FCP, got vision and audio but no deck control and it says no communication.
However
If I use the Blackmagic deck control software, it works fine and dandy.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. the dv deck control is fine.
Any ideas?
Tim

It's alright, all sorted
just uninstalled and reinstalled again and it worked!

  • Random loss of deck control

Occasionally and for no real reason FCP (5.1) loses rs422 control of my sony VTR - Im using Black magic decklink and can still control the deck with their deck control software but FCP wont play - normally when Im up against a deadline.
Using Latest OS and Latest FCP with Decklink HD pro

Well, as footnote to my previous post...
I have fixed 90% of all the strange behaviour & got my Decklink card working again by doing a clean install of OS 10.4.6, upgraded to 10.4.8, installed FCS 5, upgraded to 5.1.2, installed 5.7.2 decklink drivers and I'm editing to tape again.
BTW: I haven't installed a single other thing yet.... as I'm have just acheived this deadline with minutes to spare. PHEW!
So i don't know what further conflicts may arise, but we'll see.
On this first time getting ETT working again, I had to check the frame accuracy everytime as it was often 2 to 4 frames out of sync to tape.
Then once it finally locked it crashed about 40minutes into the 86min program. So then i just did an ETT from 10 seconds before the crash and thankfully it frame-locked first time and I made my deadline.
I'm not satisfied at all with the "looseness" of the frame-sync between FCP5 & decklink.... i had to do it about 20 times to get it to actually lock, and it still wasn't anyway... I had to compensate by 2 frames to trick it to hit the mark.
Is this everyone's experience with FCP-5 & decklink PCIe ?

  • FCP-BlackMagic 422 deck control issues

I have developed an issue with RS 422 deck control between my Black Magic Decklink HD Pro and a variety of Sony decks like a PVW 2800 which is my primary deck and also a DNW A25 and a DSR 1800 that I tested as well, getting the same issues.
I get an error message: “A new tape has been inserted in the VTR. You may wish to change the Reel setting.” or “Batch Capture: Tape is unthreaded” when neither is the case. They pop up randomly. Trying to find a cause and effect but it’s still random. Tried different tapes from different cameras and a DVCAM in the DSR 1800. Same thing again. I have replaced the cable with same results.
    Hardware/software rundown is 2 x 3 GHz Dual Core Xeon w/ 8GB 667 DIMMs, OS 10.4.11, Decklink 6.2.2, Quicktime 7.4.1. FCP 6.0.2.
I sent a note to BlackMagic Designs and got this: 'This is a known issue with the Apple platform.  It is an Apple problem and they are trying to resolve it right now.  We are hopeful to have a resolution shortly.'
It started after I rebuilt the desktop and ran it up to OS 10.4.11, and I’m inclined to do a clean rebuild and stop at 10.4.9. which is where all things ran very well. Not interested in Leopard.
But if anyone else has run into this issue and has some insight it would be appreciated.

I finally found a person who's going through the same thing as me.... Have you figured it out yet? I can't get anything to work. My whole system is a write off unless this starts to work. If I don't figure it out by tomorrow I'm getting a Kona card.

  • Deck control preview - rewind

    FC 6.0.4
    OSX 10.5.4
    QT 7.5
While in the capture window and using deck control to play and shuttle, the preview input(in the capture window) does not update while shuttling back or rewinding. To clarify, the preview works fine while playing, fast-forwarding or shuttling forward - the preview only fails to update during rewind or shuttling backwards.
This has been tested with two systems with the versions listed above and with the following decks/cameras with the same result. The footage being used in all cases is 720p/30.
    JVC HD50U
    JVC GY-HD250
    JVC GY-HD100
An NTSC tape was tested and doesn't have the problem.
All HDV control protocols in the device control field were tested with no change.
Is this a new bug with 720 footage or HDV control in general? Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Ive had this problem as well. I'd love to find a solution. Has anyone else seen this?

  • Deck Control for non-FW decks...

Been looking around for a day or 2 can no-el-findo. In the days of FCP v3.x people would use something called a "stealth port". Essentially an 8pin serial port that would replace the modem in your G4. Paired with an 8pin to RS422 cable you were off to the races in terms of deck control.
With the CPU's out today where no modem is shipped, what device/method are
people using to control RS422 ready video decks? I need a reliable way to INSERT edit onto tape with LTC timecode, not just print to tape/video.
(Would it really be a keyspan adapter?-I'm skeptical as I've beta tested FCP v2.x
and back then keyspan wasn't recommended)
    Thanx in advance...

Well, here's the latest incarnation of the list, but it isn't going to tell you what you want to know:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php
The capability of a VCR to do an insert edit has nothing to do with FCP, really. The deck has to have strong enough capstans and other internals, plus the firmware needs to be capable of an Insert edit. Then, and only then, do we need to see if Final Cut has a machine template that will allow it to communicate with that deck in a manner that allows the Insert.
But you began by asking about NON firewire decks, which means you have a capture card or box. Which one?
And which Sony VCR are you talking about?

If you are looking for a cheap option, patch bays work well. You will need a patch bay for co-ax cables (composite and/or component video), audio (we use TRS but could be XLR, Bantum, etc.) and 9 pin (I had to make that one myself but they may be available commercially).
All ours live in the machine room rack and with the patch bays we can patch to either of our two edit suites or to our dub rack (25 VHS machines). We can also patch between machines for Betacam dubbing or format conversion.
For convenience each edit suite has its own Betacam player (our most common format). The suites also have an audio mixer to enable selection (and signal modification) of the source (local deck or the machine rack). A small patch bay using linking plugs allows video connection to the local deck or the machine rack. The design allows one set of cables between the suite and the machine rack to be used for input and output. The cables loop through the client monitor on the way to the machine room.

  • BetaSP deck control

Sorry for this post everyone...I've searched the forums but couldn't find an answer.
Former Avid user who is making switch to FCP.
We used a Vlan to control all our decks and in reading the post, it seems all we need is a keyspan adaptor to a 9 pin.
Well, all is set up and plugged in but i don't see any options for deck control or timecode.
I keep getting message that there are no serial ports on the computer.
We need this for a client who came in last min. who needs this stuff digitized for and offline edit at DV res.
What am i missing here...is there something i need to update?

OK, forgive me if you've done these steps but here is how I set up my Keyspan.
Install the KeySpan drivers (2.3 or better), restart, then insert Keyspan adaptor, launch Keyspan Serial Assistant from Applications, click the arrow to list serial ports, you should see three, KeySerial1 is a dummy and the other two verify the presence of the adaptor. Close the Assistant app.
Launch Final Cut, go into Audio/Video Settings, Device Control Presets, Duplicate or Edit an unlocked Preset with the following settings, these are what I use for a BVW-65 and BVW-70 in NTSC:
    Protocol: Sony RS-422
    Audio Mapping: 2 Channels
    Time Source: LTC
    Port: USA28X191P1.1
    Frame Rate 29.97
Select to: Use Deck Search Mechanism
    Capture offset: 1
    Playback Offset: +0:01
Timecode will be read through the RS-422 protocol (via KeySpan)
and if your connected to the proper Keyspan port (1) with the proper, working adapter cable to the proper connector on the machine (Remote-1 for BVWs) you should have communication with the machine. If not, I would stongly suspect the Keyspan.

  • Deck Control

Is it possible to control a videotape machine/deck with FME
as the encoder? My deck supports either IEEE or serial port control

    Thanks.

Moin, I have been successful getting an audio and video

hi, our tv station has a final cut pro HD editor, version 4.5, connected to a DVC-Pro AJ-D650 via a 'keyspan USA-19H' usb adapter. i've tried every protocal setting on final cut, but continue to get an error when we edit to tape. when connected to a DVC-Pro AJ-D230H, it worked fine. my question is, do we need to fix the deck or are there compatibility issues with the AJ-D650 deck? thanks!!

  • No remote control on Deck Link HD Extreme and Final Cut Estudio 2

Hi all. I have a little problem width my video card, when i update my final cut studio 2, Final Cut can't control the deck. I try with another port, KeySpan UXA 28 and he work properly. The port RS 422 deck control by Deck link appear in the list of port in Device control tab, but "no communication" message appear. I have proven with the application "Blackmagic Deck Control" and work play and stop but it does not appear the Time Code.

  • Can't control my DV deck after upgrade

I just upgraded to Leopard and iLife 08. Had to install iLife HD 06 because I don't meet the sys req for iMovie 08. Anyway, after the upgrade I can no longer control my Sony DSR-1500 DV deck from within iMovie. I plugged my firewire cable in, it seems to recognize it and displays a frame from the DV deck on the screen, but nothing happens when I click play or import within iMovie.
This worked fine before the upgrade.
    Please help!

I know the DSR-1500 by reputation, but I'm not familiar with it, sorry. Maybe you could look in the Setup Menu, or read the instruction manual for suitable deck control or FireWire codes.
Plenty of people in the Final Cut Pro Discussions use these decks, so they'd probably be able to advise.
"..control of the DV deck now is very sporadic.." ..no; it sounds as though control is very predictable: "..When I first insert a tape, I can control it for a while so long as I use pause instead of stop. When I hit stop, I loose control of the deck. I have to eject the tape and re-insert it.."
If it's that regular and predictable, then there's a definite reason: seems like the deck is relinquishing control, but iMovie's not picking up the control; maybe you need to define in the deck's Setup Menu exactly which device should be controlling the deck.
If you can't solve this problem by adjusting settings within the deck's software, then, perhaps, it's appropriate for the next step: "..This didn't happen before upgrading to 10.5 and iMovie6 HD.." ..so you might want then to send some iMovie feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html ..and perhaps something about iMovie and Leopard.
But do ask in FCP Discussions first, and see what they say..
P.S: You might like to add your computer type and configuration to your details, besides just Mac OS X 10.5 ..that might help troubleshooting in future..
P.P.S: Have you upgraded to the latest version of iMovie HD 6..? Info and links to downloading are at the bottom-right of this page linked here.

  • How does everyone hook up there Sony Beta Deck to capture in FCP?

    Hello all,
I have a Sony Betacam SP UVW1800 and I am wondering how you hook it up to a Powermac G5 so I can start capturing some footage ... I am assuming that I need to get some kind of converter to firewire. Any suggestions??
    Thanks in advance
    G5 Quad 3 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I use an AJA Io for uncompressed capture, and I think it is really great. It does a fantastic job with the transcoding to any SD format and has been pretty much bulletproof. I would concur with Greg Jio that AJA's technical support is excellent. I have had highly educational exchanges with then evey time I have needed support.
As far as a solution that provides component input and RS-422 deck control, it's the only one I have experience with, but I highly recommend AJA solutions.
Keep in mind that working with uncompressed video requires fast drives and more stoarge space. I use a FW 800 external RAID, or an internal SATA RAID, and have heard that uncompressed will also work fine on "soft RAIDs" such as you can create by simply formatting a set of drives inside your Mac Pro case without a dedicated RAID controller card.
    Hope this helps -

  • No Timecode from Betacam deck

    Hi,
I've hooked up a rented Betacam deck into a miniDV deck using an s-video cable. The miniDV deck is connected to the Mac via Firewire. I'm using the miniDV as a bypass to get the video from Betacam tapes directly into the FCP.
I can see the Betacam's video in FCP when I pull up the 'log and capture screen', but when I go to capture, FCP waits for timecodes and doesn't capture.
Can anyone assist in how I can capture from a Betacam deck?
    Thank you very much!
    Richard

Or get the Keyspan Serial Adapter (connects via USB) and and RS-422 cable and use that for Deck Control and TC capture. I routed a signal from a BetaSP deck thru my DSR-11, RCA connections deck to deck, firewire into my computer, Keyspan for serial control...and I was able to capture footage and TC.
But that was....3 years ago? Haven't had to since...I now have a capture card.
But it worked at the time.

  • By passing  Kona for direct firewire capture/control

    Greetings
First let me qualify this by saying that it's quite possible I'm missing something very basic in FCP and MAC config and use. I'm not immune to overlooking the obvious or stupid mistakes. So having said that...
I'm running a FCP 5 on a MacPro with a Kona AJA card.
In the course of trying to capture HD video from a Sony HVR-M25U deck I've had problems matching capture res/format and deck control. Tried every possible combo of capture and control preset available.
To make a very long story short, the best I could do was capture 1080i via the "capture now". (Obviously I don't get TC from the tape which will cause problems in future edit sessions.)
In the course of many discussions a possible problem might be that the KONA card is some how preventing direct Firewire capture and control.
So my question is, is there an easy way during boot up to disable the KONA? If there is a way it would (probably) allow a standard firewire ingest.
    I hope this makes sense.
I guess what I'm asking for is a way to fool my Mac into thinking there is no KONA without having to physically remove it from the slot.

You don't have to disable the Kona to capture firewire, just select an appropriate easy setup (non Kona)
so you have a Kona LE?
What we usually do with HDV that needs to be repeatable or be used in other systems is bump to HDCam with new code (to avoid TC breaks) then capture the result of that.
If it doesn't need to be repeatable we come in pro res or DVCProHD so editing/ finishing is a frame based codec.
If you have hdmi on the deck and or camera you might want to look at

    or via firewire

  • When mastering my DV deck records only black, crash record sees program

    Hi there:
I've been editing for years but this is my first Final Cut job. I was having a problem outputting an 8-minute sequence, geting an Incompatible Compression Settings error message. I am not sure why, because all the sources were either DV, aiff music/vo and jpegs, but a friend I asked suggested this solution. First I created a new sequence, making sure that everything was set to DV output (which it seemed to be in the previous, but anyway...). Then I nested my output sequence in the new one. I had to render stuff again, but it seemed that it would finally let me make a digital output to the deck.
    The Problem:
When I went to assemble, the deck (DSR-11, tape blacked at head) cued and went into record. The output signal was Firewire, the deck's input was DV. Since I was "mastering", it put B&T as well as a black slug in the appropriate spots and for the correct lengths and played the sequence to the end. However I was only seeing this through the FCP output window. When I checked the tape I found the deck had recorded ONLY BLACK, but did assemble correctly since I now had black and timecode on my tape for the full duration.
It was as if black were routed to the deck. This was really weird because I had been using the deck to feed my line monitor throughout the whole edit, so I knew the deck was seeing FCP. I tried this several times, using different tapes (DVCam, MiniDV) but the result was the same.
Finally I just added bars and black to the sequence and played it down manually while I hard recorded on the DSR. The deck saw and recorded the piece without a problem, but because I had to hard record the start timecode for the show isn't 01:00:00:00-how unprofessional!!
Any advice you can give is welcomed. thanks!

The DSR-11 is a mainly a player. It wasn't designed for mastering. There is no RS-422 deck control, and a few internal components and menu settings are missing, so you cannot master to the deck with timeline timecode. The only thing you can do is PRINT TO VIDEO, and the deck will start recording at 1:00:00:00. You cannot EDIT TO TAPE. The only way to do that is if you have RS-422 deck control, or you use firewire as deck control and send video out via another route, like SDI. The DSR-25 and 45 were the mastering decks.
There was a trick to getting timeline timecode to the deck, but that trick is 5 years out of date, and no longer works. Bottom line is that you cannot master to that deck and get the timecode you are aiming for.
    Sorry.
