Declaring open source in web development contract?

I was wondering if any of you have incorporated a disclaimer regarding various open source CMS that you might use for a webiste. For example, say you build a website using Wordpress or Joomla and some tech-savvy person working for the company happens to notice the open source declaration with the copyright in the index.php file, etc. and notifies the boss who, even though he only has a vague idea what open source is, complains to the web designer that he was sold a shoddy bag of goods (even though by using an open source CMS you have been able to give him a far better website than you could have otherwise)...

Huh. No I haven't, but I would definitely communicate these types of things to the client leading up o the selection of such technology. I would also make sure they understand the pros and cons of whatever technology solution they chose to go with. Part of being a web designer and developer is also being a technology consultant!

    If you are starting a Java Web, you should use MVC and Standard tags,

    Has Sun open sourced the web proxy server? If so, where can I get at the source?

  • How Open source Flex looks to a mid level developer

    Here is my response to a post Matt made on a blog:
    THe whole post:
    http://blog.simb.net/2009/01/19/take-flex-back-for-the-community/
    @Matt
    1st off thanks, now my input:
    The crux of your criticism seems to be that the process that we use for decision-making is closed its certainly not how we feel
    Unfortuntly, this seems like a case of bad commuication by Adobe and the Flex team. If notable community experts get the impression of closed doors, then *certainly* the rest of us get this impression as well.
    but there has been very little participation from the community so far
    Im a solid dev, and not an expert but I can contribute in things such as testing and low level optimization; But, the Adobe open source site is a galactic disaster and discourages me from getting invloved. It has so many webpages that just go around in circles - filled with text that is verbose, this frustrates me to a great deal. As opposed to somehting straight foreward like:
    http://framework.zend.com/download/latest
    or
    http://code.google.com/p/papervision3d/
    Everything is here and easily notable. I avoid the seamingly endless pages and confusion. If I want to get to the Flex dev mailing list I have to register, then choose the lists, add the lists to my account. go though my account prefs read some directions.. then set up some other preferences..jeeeezzzz. If I want to submit a feature request I am directed to create another login for some Bug and Issue management? HUH? I thought I was submitting a featue request.
    Right on papervisions google HOME page I see Getting started > Papervision3D Mailing List.
    Next when I finially do get to Flex SVN, this trunk. is nothing like I have seen.what IS all this stuff and where do I go to learn about it? There are countless subfolders filled with things I vaguely understand and if I want to learn what it is. where do I go? Is there even a src folder?
    Here is a classic example.
    Flex trunk Read Me:
    http://opensource.adobe.com/svn/opensource/flex/sdk/trunk/README.txt
    vs.
    Zend Trunk Read me:
    http://framework.zend.com/svn/framework/standard/trunk/README.txt
    *What* is the Flex team thinking with this?
    I just spent 5 minutes or so twirling through all these SVN directories and Adobes website and I am clueless. I feel like the project is unessarily complex and disorganized - even if it isnt. This just convinced me to delete my Flex sdk bookmark on my SVN client.
    Adobe just lost one potential contributor to Flex SDK.
    We have another idea that were bouncing around that I hope to share in a week or two but wont get into now.
    Saying stuff like this is what gives people the impression of closed. Why not post these ideas the Flex team has? Even if it is stupid or incomplete
    Thats the whole point.

    Wow, thanks for your response. This is great.<br /><br />I now understand that I had a combination of prejudice and ignorance  <br />when regarding Adobe Open Source. Perhaps my ignorance on these  <br />particulars is something that other devs encounter ( that whole  <br />perception thing ).   I have chatted with people who consider the Flex  <br />SDK and Flex Builder... not the same... but fused together so much  <br />that it'd be just crazy to try and use one with out the other   When I  <br />mention using Flex without Flex Builder.... people get that glazed  <br />over look in their eyes....( FYI I'm a FDT man, but am keeping a close  <br />eye on the new Flex Builder )<br /><br />I'll use Zend as an example ( it's the best that I can come up with )  <br />but I feel like there is a difference between the open source  <br />framework and Zend Studio ( commercial software ). Anyway, I'm really  <br />excited about how you've responded to all this.  I have more ideas,  <br />but Ill sit on them and think it through and get ready for next weeks  <br />meeting.<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Alan<br /><br /><br />On Jan 23, 2009, at 1:31 AM, Matt Chotin wrote:<br /><br />> A new message was posted by Matt Chotin in<br />><br />> General Discussion --<br />>  How Open source Flex looks to a mid level developer<br />><br />> I've delayed responding to this because frankly I'm not sure what to  <br />> say for much of it.  The first thing I have to point out is that  <br />> many of the things you mention are related to Flex Builder and not  <br />> the Flex SDK, which is the part that is open source. • Managing Open Source Web Projects...

    I have checked out
    http://www.rollerweblogger.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=RollerSourceCodeAccess
    the Roller 1.2 branch, using Subclipse.
    Then I have chosen "Manage as Web Application" in the menu.
    And I get an error message...
    "Unable to find a valid WEB-INF folder in the select project."
    Yes, there is a /web/WEB-INF/ folder. But there is no web.xml in that folder. What does "valid WEB-INF" mean?
    Now who is "wrong" here? The target in open source development must be "Check out, Code, Test, Check in". Is it
    - Eclipse that is not flexible enough?
    - NitroX that is not flexible enough?
    - The roller project that does not confirm with Specification? (which Specification?)
    - How can this be improved?
    Best regards,
    Marky

    Yes, thanks for this advice.
    So what I finally had to do was:
    ant built.xml -all
    Then I have chosen "Manage as Web Application" in the menu.
    Then I have chosen "Rebuild NitroX Database"
    But then it did not regognize the "Struts Configuration" automatically.
    So I closed the project.
    And then open the project.
    And then I was at the point, where it looked ok! I now even see the Struts Configuration.
    Unfortunately all this still breaks with the rule:
    "Check out, Code, Test, Check in"
    since there were more steps and knowledge involved.
    So who can improve here?
    - Eclipse that is not flexible enough?: well, it seems like Eclipse can handle this.
    - NitroX that is not flexible enough?: well, it seems like Eclipse can handle this.
    - The roller project that does not confirm with Specification? (which Specification?). Yes, maybe the open source projects need to adapt to enable "Check out, Code, Test, Check in", is that right?

  • Web Dynpro for Open Source

    Dear Web Dynpro community,
    please have a look to Benny´s  blog under http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs;jsessionid=(J2EE3417200ID0731044050DB00226095944409325288End?blog=/pub/wlg/16004 raising the question whether Web Dynpro Java should become Open Source.
    It would be very interesting for me to here your opinion about this. What are the benefits in doing this? What are the risks? Would YOU like to actively contribute?
    Thanks in advance
    Jochen (Product Owner Web Dynpro Java)

    Hi all,
    <p>
    let me add some comments on some parts of the answers (also in the two blogs around this topic ..).
    In general it is really interesting to see that there seems to be a real interest for an "open sources" Web Dynpro for Java. This is motivating to go into this direction and to further discuss this here within SAP.
    <p>
    Some technical comments: I agree that an open-source WDJ (in the ideal world) would include also the WDJ tools parts and most probably also UR ( = Unified rendering) as the underlying (HTML) rendering technology. Also NWDI is somehow part of this game. BUT: I do not think that such a big step is realistic and feasible. Instead of this the first natural step for me would be to open-source the WDJ runtime part. This WDJ runtime contains all important parts needed to run WDJ applications (including the control libraries, the different CMI model implementations, the different clients and last but not least the server-abstraction layer).
    <p>
    This server abstraction layer (SAL) is most probably not know by the WDJ community as this was never rolled out in the past. As the name shows this layer encapsulates the server environment "hosting" the WDJ runtime. This allows us even today to run WDJ applications besides the SAP JEE  also in top of a simple TomCat installation. This version is used for a long time for control development but was never rolled out.
    <p>
    In the labs we have WDJ application running on Amazon Cloud, on Google App Engine, on Bea and also on top of Geronimo.
    Not all of these server abstraction implementations are fully working for the moment and not all features are available for all implementations - but it would be really straightforward to provide all these implementations - in the ideal case of course via a active open source community ,-)
    <p>
    Besides the platform implementations I see some other areas how an open sourced version of WDJ could be extended:
    <p>
    The combination of WDJ projects with Maven. This is also on our internal development list but due to prios this was never started.
    New controls. Also without open-sourcing the UR layer I see a lot of potential to extend existing controls or to build completly new controls.
    "Generation-free WDJ" - the idea would be to provide a WDJ version which is not depending on a complex generation framework. This would be of course one option but a "generation-free" WDJ would allow you to code your WDJ apps / components completly without any generation.
    Extending the usage scenarios for "system components" - this kind of WD components is used to extend WDJ runtime capabilities. Currently this is only used for the "Technical Info" and the UI of the implicit personalization but there is a lot of potential to extend this.
    <p>
    This is only a very short list of things I have currently in mind - for sure you will find more.
    <p>
    Have fun at TechEd Phoenix
    Best regards
    Jochen

  • [ANN] XINS 2.1 open source Web Services framework release

    XINS 2.1 Web Services Framework has been released.
    XINS is an open source Web Services Framework based on simple specifications of the Web Service in XML and
    generation of code and documentation from the specification.
    The generation includes Client JAR with its Javadoc, Server side template with its Javadoc, documentation in OpenDocument Format,
    documentation in HTML including the test forms, WSDL file, unit tests (JUnit) and stubs.
    The Web Services accept several protocols including REST, SOAP, XML-RPC, XML, JSON Yahoo! and JSON-RPC.
    What's new:
    * Start the API with java -jar <api name>.war
    * Improved generated specification in OpenDocument Format
    * Include/exclude calling convention with ACLs
    * New calling convention that maps SOAP request and response as the wsdl2api command mapping.
    * Smaller generated build.xml
    * Added possibility to include other runtime properties files
    * The runtime property location can be a URL
    * Swing Graphical User Interface
    * New tools: emma, glean, webstart
    * New target: javadoc-test-<api name>, javadoc-apis
    * Bug fixes and small RFEs
    Download XINS 2.1:
    Windows installer: http://prdownloads.sf.net/xins/xins-2.1.exe?download

    I recommend you implement your web service with JAX-WS 2.0
    Axis (both version) are good but why do you want to use something that is not included in JEE API, when Java provide same thing with better performance.
    personally try to prevent non standard technologies despite they can be better than core java implementation sometimes.
    I don't know Xfire.
    the good:
    -JAX-WS performance is better than axis,
    - you can create your web service simply with annotation.(this means write class and then make it as a service easily)
    - support every kind of service invocation(callback,Asynchronous,...)
    - architecture is nice (you can operate on SOAP level)
    the Bad:
    - It is JEE 5 or JSE 6 dependent.
    - there is seriously lack of documentation and examples for it, on java web sites and internet.

  • Are we allowed to use the Web developer function in Firefox version 5.0 to edit the html source code associated with the Firefox home page?

    Locking at request of OP - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/844506
    Are we allowed to use the Web developer function, under the "Firefox" tab in Firefox version 5.0, to edit the html source code associated with the Firefox version 5.0 home page ( so that we can personalize the home page )? Is this legal?
    Sincerely in Christ,
    Russell E. Willis

    Solution: (Free Download Manager)
    Go here: http://codecpack.co/download/Free_Download_Manager.html and download Free Download Manager 3.8.1067 Beta 3, it works perfectly with Firefox 5.0.1
    Solution: (to Google mail aka Gmail)
    I have had this problem for a while since I did a previous Firefox update, where I had to force Gmail to load in Basic HTML else it's next to impossible to use it. The solution is this: simply update your Java, and Gmail will work without a problem using Standard HTML. To update your Java go here: http://www.java.com/en/ and select "Free Java Download".
    And beta normally, universally, means "the not quite there yet version of the version we're aiming for" NORMALLY used during production and testing of a type of software.

    JLundan,
    I want to thank you for responding to the thread I started on the forum at java.sun.com. Your solution to my problem of needing to print the code of the html pages that the file I included generates was just what I was looking for. However, I have some further questions to ask, if you don't mind. To clarify my task I should say that your rephrasing of the problem is accurate: "You wan't to display the contents of the HTML file that the web server produces in response of client's request?"
    Yes, this is what I need to do, but also it needs to display the source code of that html file that the server produces in response to the client's request. Also, in this case, I am the client requesting that the server return some html file, and I'm not sure where the server is. But the webserver.java file that I shared on the forum is on my local machine. I was wondering if I could modify this webserver.java file at my home so that any html file the server returns to me would automatically display the source code. This is a school project of mine and I am stuck on this one thing here.
    Further, where would I put the "foo.html" file so it can be written to?
    FileOuputStream fos = new FileOutputStream("foo.html");
    fos.write(bytes);
    fos.close();
    Thanks so much for your help. I look forward to your response, at your convenience.
    Regards

  • Open Source solution for Map Display on Web

    Hi
    Does anybody knows an Open Source solution for displaying Maps on Web. Something like the MapXtreme equivalent of Open Source.
    Regards,
    Nstor Boscn

    There are all sorts of solutions for displaying maps on the Web, starting from JPG files and going up from there. Would you reject JPG because it isn't open source? Or did you really mean to ask for no-payment solutions?

  • Open source web chat

    Hello
    I want to integrate open source web chat with cisco contact center !
    Please let me know the procedure

    For SME escalation or customer-facing chat queueing? Assuming the later you need CCX 9.0 Premium with SocialMiner to serve as the DMZ-based web frontend and XMPP proxy. Be aware that chat is a 1.0 technology for CCX in this release; very basic.
    Web Chat:Cisco Unified CCX Premium provides the facility for end users to initiate a chat session with the agent, from a website, typically the public website of the organization using the Unified CCX. Unified CCX provides separate agent and supervisor web application, real-time, and historical reports for Chat. The chat functionality requires Cisco SocialMiner to be deployed, and SocialMiner to act as the endpoint that hosts the widgets that end users and agents use during the chat session. SocialMiner accepts the chat request, communicates with Unified CCX to allocate an agent for the chat and then establishes the chat session between agent and end user. The Unified CCX queues the chat requests from SocialMiner, allocates agents, and monitors the chat session. Additionally, it facilitates agent state changes and provides the real-time and historical reports for the Chat.
    The procedure is not well documented publically. If you're a partner you could look at these TOIs:
    https://communities.cisco.com/docs/DOC-30185
    https://communities.cisco.com/docs/DOC-30186
    Customers are limited to the product docs:

    SocialMiner documentation is hidden on the DocWiki:

  • Need information on open source testing tools for ADF web applications

    Hi experts,
    I need to investigate on new feasible open source Java testing tools for testing ADF web applications. I have tried to google a lot but getting confused.
    My requirements as as under:
    1. The tool must be open source.
    2. It should be easy to understand and to work upon by the tester and developers.
    Selenium based testing approach is already in place for testing the application but need to search for tools other than Selenium which shall prove suitable for testing ADF applications. Kindly let me know your inputs / suggestions.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hi,
    Have a look at JMeter http://jakarta.apache.org/jmeter/index.html
    1. The tool must be open source.It is.
    2. It should be easy to understand and to work upon by the tester and developers.I guess it is.
    There are some specifics in configuring it for ADF, but Chris Muir wrote a nice blog about how it's done, check it out http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.com/2010/04/configuring-apache-jmeter-specifically.html

  • Ll / seeking FREE open source JSP / JSF Web application Tomcat/5.5.15

    hi all,
    We have a need to set-up a web site for a community based (non profit organisation) football / soccer) club.
    The web hosting machine is based on JSP / JSF running on Apache Tomcat/5.5.15 & Sun Microsystems Inc. VM 1.5.0_06-b05.
    OS is Windows 2003 V 5.2
    The database backend is based on MySQL, mysql-essential-5.0.18-win32.
    We need to add content related to:
    a) Players contact details;
    b) Teams;
    c) Match reports;
    d) News;
    ... and other dynamic content
    We are looking for an out-of-the box FREE open source Web application we can deploy on the web hosting machine.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Trajano

    I haven't tried ICEFaces or JBoss seam or Apache MyFaces, so I can't really compare them.
    ICEFaces appears to be a nice framework/tool from looking at their site, even though it's open source I think one has to pay for support, you might want to take that into consideration while making your decision.
    Apache MyFaces, is fully community driven - so you get free support from the community.
    I don't know about JBoss seam.

  • Employ open source framework to existing web application

    Hi everyone,
    Existing application model:
    MySQL, Tomcat, Java 6 SE, so no EJB.
    Own MVC model used (no framework).
    Own data access layer model (no framework).
    Because this is a corporate application, the UI experience
    can not be broken (in terms of new beautifuly deployed pages
    vs old existing pages - developed around 8 years ago). Application
    run on balanced Tomcats, so it's getting more and more difficult
    to synchronize all information.
    Question:
    Is there a way of smooth transition from own developed MVC
    and DAO to open source frameworks to leverage some of the work
    required to do manually as it is currently, like validation,
    access like hibernate instead of manual creation of DAO objects ... ?
    Also, it would be nice to have some reach user interface framework
    employed but I don't know how it would be achieved not to break
    the look and feel (all pages would have to be done at the same time,
    and we are talking here about hundrets of existing screens developed
    in different technologies).
    Application consists of few millions of lines - so it's a real challange.
    Thanks for all tips.

    What does that mean? Why are there two of them?

  • An open source framework for agile development with Sites

    I am happy to announce the release of a new open source framework for sites development: AgileSites 1.0.0.beta1.
    AgileSites is an open source framework built using standard and documented Sites API provinding a number of features meant to simplify development, mostly to make agile development and offshoring way easier and more manageable.
    Some of the features:
    - MVC with plain Java controller and pure HTML views
    - Templating done in jQuery style (like client-side javascript templating)
    - Integrated unit testing and build system
    - Integrated csdt so everything is source and can be stored in Git or Subversion and rebuilt with jenkins in minutes
    - Hot reloading of java classes, including the url assembler - you code in java without restarting the application server
    - Single jar deployment - all your site code is in a jar that can be easily tracked and moved around
    - A simplified API layer built on top of standard tag assets making development a breeze
    - Complete and unlimited access to the full Sites API
    - Keeps the JSP structure so the framework can be added to another site using JSP
    AgileSites is available in his own dedicated site: www.AgileSites.org with a video showing his capabilites.

    The framework is completely following WebCenter Sites standard. It is built on top of JSP and Java using only documented API and standard Java libraries. It is not different than any other site implementation. It is basically a pre-built site to make easier applying agile development practices. It is as supported by Oracle as any other custom website implementation on top of Sites.
