Decode Colormanagement "Conversion Profile"

Can any one explain how to simply select a destination profile in this box?
View> Tools> Print Production> Convert Colors
It is probably "Conversion Profile" but I've never seen that terminology used by Adobe and I am doubly confused by "Output Intent" option.
What settings are recommended to Convert to a destination profile?

using this control set of 10 PDI images (in one PDF) of five color spaces (five tagged/untagged pairs):
gballard.net/photoshop/pdi_download/PDI_Color_Profile_Test.pdf
i tried two of the most obvious settings -- neither one appears to work corectly (Source> Destination)
if a true convert to profile (embed profiles) was working -- the five tagged files should be displaying properly
what am i missing
PS
the object inspector is more confusing...

    Hi teknozen
    Welcome to Discussions.
Open GL stands for Open Graphics Language, it is a platform independent standard for 3D graphics. An analogy would be .jpeg images. These files can be viewed on Windows or Macs, whereas .bmp is windows only.
So Open GL in iTunes allows third party developed iTunes visualizations to run. If you don't have any of these, it won't matter if it is selected or not.
Cap frame rate at 30 fps, means 30 frames per second. This is the speed of the Visualiser 'video'. There is no need to go faster than this because the human eye will not see any difference in motion faster than 25 to 30 frames per second anyway. So supposing you have a superfast mega processor that can pump out data at higher rates than 30 fps, visually you will not see any difference, so capped at 30 fps saves wasting CPU power cycles regardless of how powerful your computer's CPU is.
Plug ins for iTunes visualizer are different visuals other people create to display in the Visualzer, and then you may need to engage the Open GL.
This information is not contained in the Help documentation because it is technical background information, and Help documentations are more focused on how to do things then explain theory and background knowledge.
I hope that answers a few questions.

  • The monitor profile "***" appears to be defective......

This is an FYI for others trying to solve the problem I've been pulling my hair out over! I was receiving a warning on startup of Ps CS3 "The monitor profile 'LCD color management and conversion' appears to be defective. Please rerun your monitor calibration software". This was after using my EyeOne to calibrate my monitor. I've seen variations of this problem on various forums and websites, but none helped my particular problem.
FINALLY, it occurred to me to check the default profile for my SECONDARY monitor! That one was using a stock profile that came with the monitor, but that was what was triggering the error message. Once I replaced that with the same profile as I created and was using on my primary monitor, Ps stopped displaying the warning.
I hope this helps someone else! If I recall from months ago when I researched and bought my colorimeter, my model will only calibrate one monitor, so I can't use it to create a unique profile for the second monitor.

    OK, this is pretty funny...
I'm having this same problem, and can't remember how I solved it before, searching all over the internet and Adobe Forum, and finally find this post.  Finally, a post that seems very similar to my problem!
HELLO!  I posted it!!!!  Even if it never was of any help to anyone else, it helped me solve the problem again!
This time, problem arose because of having to remove and reinstall GPU and monitor drivers.  Other things have change too, since my original post.  I'm now on Win7 64bit, just bought PS CS5, and different GPU.....but none of those are a factor.
Even though I had just recently calibrated my primary monitor with Eye-One, using the advanced mode; I did it all over again, and determined that it was set as the default profile.
I almost thought the fix didn't work this time around, but upon trying it again, I realized I wasn't paying close enough attention.  I right-clicked the desktop to get to screen resolution, and clicked on advanced properties after selecting monitor #2.  Color management tab>click on color management button>devices tab.  Alas, I thought, they're the same list of profiles, and the newest profile is set as the default.  It wasn't until the second time around that I realized that, even though I had started out selecting monitor #2 as the one I wanted to change, this dialog I found myself in has a drop-down for monitor, and it was displaying the profiles for the primary.
Once I changed that to show the secondary monitor, the problem was evident: the only profile showing was the dreaded "LCD color management and conversion" profile.  Where it comes from, and why PS doesn't like it, I have no idea.  As far as I can tell, it's not Dell's.   I also had to check the box "Use my settings for this device" before I was able to add any new profiles.  I added a few new ones from the list after clicking on "add", including the profile for my primary.  Since my secondary is not color critical and is just for tool pallettes, I just chose one that looked similar to my primary's (the one for the primary was too cool).
Reopened PS, and it was happy as a clam!

  • Why embed color profiles?

I understand color profiles as translators of the image data for the device to show as it shoudl appear (to me, the human eye)
Why not apply this translation as a conversion (profile tells how the color values shoudl appear, right?) and done with it. Then the monitor should use it's profile to show the file correctly.
The whole idea of "working space" or choosing/applying a profile to an image seems only to apply this translation (the profile).
Why ask? Or why even have an image + profile, when one can simply do image x profile = a single profiled origianl image? In RAW conversion is this not what we are doing? And if so, why have the profile name attached to the file, when it is already converted?
Or did I got it all wrong? When I think I get it, soon I start to see - may be I am not getting it

As this topic (color management) makes me to research and learn continuously, I am curious to understand more about your comment on LAB: "...numerous issues with Lab although the fact it's self defining (until you ask about white point)" What about the white point in LAB? I don't know if that should be another discussion.
In the meantime I got my answers, and a book called "Color Confidence" seems to clarify it well. In fact it has a reddish text box just for the precise question "Why not Lab?" ("why embed profile" is implied in the context). What pinned it well was the statement "Of course, provided a profile is embedded in an image file, the RGB and CMYK values are, in a way, stored as LAB..."
The text can be found in Google books preview: http://books.google.co.in/books?id=XprFp9u4lcAC&q=why+not+lab
what appeals to me now, is this:
The intention is to give real world colors and consistently accross devices (with different color spaces)
To achieve it, it is done through profiles
Original digital image (RGB or CMYK) are easier to edit as RGB or CMYK (user friendly to move those sliders of R G and B) than LAB sliders (are there sliders in LAB? I have not explored)
Though one could have untagged files, adding a profile tries to dictate some consistency to them for further use/editing. If that was not fixed for the digital image, it will be free for each app to use any color profile and make colors look different each time. I am not even talking of display and print profile here, assume they were all set.
My botheration has only been the first step of digital image. Not display and print profiles, that is, why is the original digital not converted to LAB? Now it becomes clear.

  • Video Format Total Solution: How to Convert and Edit Video on Windows/Mac

More and More video formats are coming out with different video encoders and it makes our spare time more and more colorful. However, it is not to say that there is no problems. Actually, different video formats make it difficult to share video with others, even your own camcorder and iPod. Is there an easy way to convert videos effectively. Yes, there is.
In this article, I will show you guys how to convert videos on windows and mac.
Part 1. How to Convert and Edit Videos on Windows
For Windows users, you need a Video Converter(http://www.aiseesoft.com/total-video-converter.html) to do that for you.
Here I use Aiseesoft Total Video Converter(http://www.aiseesoft.com/total-video-converter.html)
Step 1: Download and install Aiseesoft Total Video Converter
After you download it to your computer, double click it and it is really easy to install.
You just need to click “next” and it will complete it in seconds. It will automatically run after installation.
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/total-video-converter/screen.jpg
    Step 2: Load Video
Click “Add File” to find the video that you want to convert and click “open”. It will be loaded automatically.
Step 3: Select the target to decode
In the “Profile” drop download list you can find your target according the usage of your output video, such as if you want to put the video on your iPod touch, you can select the “iPod” in the first list and “iPod touch 2 MPEG-4 640*480(*.mp4)” in the second list.
    Step 4: Set Advanced Parameters
After you select the right output profile, you can click “setting” button to set your advanced parameters. You can adjust video and audio settings separately. In video section, you can change “video encoder”, “resolution”, “frame rate”, “video bitrate”In audio section, you can change “audio encoder”, “sample rate”, “channel”, “audio bitrate”If you want to save this profile and settings and use it next time you can click “save as” button to give a name to it. And the next time you want to use it you can find it in the profile list named “user defined”.
    Step 5: Choose a Destination
To browse and find a output folder for your output files or just the default one.
Finally, Click “Convert” button to begin your conversion, here in the converting
interface you can choose “shut down the computer when conversion complete” or “open output folder when conversion complete” or you just do not choose neither one.
Tips: How to Edit the Output Video
This video converter is also a video editor, you can use it to edit your output video as follows:
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/total-video-converter/effect.jpg
    1. Effect:
You are allowed to adjust the “Brightness”, “Contrast”, “Saturation” and you can choose the “deinterlacing” to make the video more enjoyable.
    2. Trim:
In “Trim” section you can pick up any part of the video to convert.
There are two ways to select the part of the video you want. One is set the start and end time in the box. The other one is to drag the start and end button in the processing bar.
    3. Crop:
This function allows you to choose a certain play area to convert. That means you can choose a part of the screen you like to convert. For example, you just like the tv in the middle of the screen, then you can drag the frame around the preview window to select the tv and the output preview will show you the output video. In this section you can also choose the “zoom mode”, such as “keep original”, “full screen”, “16:9”, “4:3”.
    4. Watermark
In the section, you can add a watermark on the output video to show people something, such as your name, website, studio name or other things. The watermark could be words and picture. You can adjust the transparent of the watermark easily to make it more beautiful.
Part 2. How to Convert Video on Mac
This time you need a Video Converter for Mac(http://www.aiseesoft.com/video-converter-for-mac.html)
    Step 1: Add File
Click “Add File” button to load the video you want to converter
    http://www.aiseesoft.com/images/guide/mac-video-converter/steps.jpg
Step 2: Choose profile and adjust settings
You can find your output video format from a drop-list called “Profile”You can also adjust the specific settings of the output video, such as “Resolution”, “Bitrate”, “Encoder” and so on.

  • [Solved] Lexmark Pro901 doesn't work

EDIT: I forgot to install ghostscript, that solved it
    Hello everyone,
I installed the lexmark-inkjet-legacy package from the AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/lexm … et-legacy/) and I configured my printer using the lx-postinstall script, which is shipped with the package but I'm not able to print a test page. Hi, i've just installed Arch with LXDE on my netbook, but despite all my efforts, automount still doesn't work. What i've done so far:
-installed pmount (didn't configure anything, because this isn't mentioned anywhere)
-added myself to the hal group
-put hal in the daemons (it boots in the background, but this shouldn't affect automounting).
    Anything i forgot?
There were some reports to fix automounting you needed to change the PolicyKit file. Have you done that yet?

  • Lack of Contrast in Photos with Color Proof ON

Hello, I never really worked with digital images inside Illustrator, so now that i have to prepare one for printing, I'm struggling with the following problem:
    All colors in CMYK;
    Document Color Mode - CMYK;
and here we see that Color Proof results in significant lack of contrast:
I tried to convert the photo between CMYK and RGB - results are the same.
The strangest thing is that Color Proof in Photoshop (with same profiles) doesn't show this problem; only Illustrator does.
I also tried to convert the whole work into RGB, and even though Color Proof worked fine, printed image was still dusky.
    What am i doing wrong?
    Please advice.
    Thanks,
    Maximus

    What am i doing wrong?
Basically, harboring unrealistic expectations when looking at a glowing RGB additive monitor or composite desktop printer to "proof" subtractive process color. Approximation is all you are going to get. It's pretty dang good approximation these days, but true accuracy is a pipedream. Monitors glow. Ink on paper doesn't. Monitors don't have every tiny dot of color surrounded by color diluting white. Ink-on-paper does.
And your eyes constantly adjust when viewing either. So even if you achieve colorimetric accuracy, that doesn't mean you achieve pleasing color. What you're looking for is an entirely different thing.
    ...huge lack of contrast...
But increase in detail. Look at your two images in post number 4. Look closely. Note the additional detail in the shadow regions (the gym equipment) of the version on the right. That difference is what the "preview" is effectively trying to simulate.
As a matter of course, any colorimetric conversion from RGB to CMYK is going to tend to "dull" (desaturate) and "flatten" (lower contrast). The preview is actually doing a decent job of simulating that. That's what it's supposed to do. (But it's still just an approximation, because you're still  converting it back to RGB in order to display it on your monitor.)
Don't think of the preivew as a look at the unavoidable end of how "accurately" the process is going to retain the "good color" of your image. Think of it as a depiction of how the limitations of the process will affect your image as it currently is; think of it as an invaluable clue of what you might need to do to the image toward the goal of achieving a better final reproduction.
I do realize that in perfect world i could simply ask printing office for their printer's profile and make adjustments based on that profile...
And all you would accomplish by that is a measure of device calibration, not of what your image needs, which is color correction.
All the painstaking "color management" (calibration), and tedious conversion profiles, etc., etc. in the world don't know didly about what's important in any given image.
You think the left image in post 4 is "better" because the contrast is greater in the model. But calibration software thinks that image is "worse" because it is less "accurate" in that it contains fewer discrete colors than the process can deliver overall.
(By the way, your mentioning of switching between color modes is a bit unnerving. I hope you're not switching between RGB and CMYK repeatedly in willy-nilly, back-and-forth fashion. If you are, you are irreparably degrading your color as you go.)
Everything in preparing images for CMYK offset repro is a balancing act. One balancing act is that which exists between contrast and detail. Gains in one require sacrifices in the other. Calibration software can't do that for you. It's a value judgement call; and it's different for every image.
So you learn to put the contrast where you need it within the image. You do this by adjusting curves in your raster imaging program. That, in a nutshell, is what your image needs in order for the colorimetric conversion to CMYK to retain some of the contrast and saturation you want to retain in the right half of the image.
....but local companies are far from being perfect and most of the time they don't even know how their printers work...anyway, it's a really sad story.
Just as sad as the even more common story of prima donna designers who want to sweat blood over their erudite artistic sensitivity to ill-defined "good color" and blame printers for failing to maintain it through hair-splitting colorimetric "accuracy," because they think it beneath them (or too painful) to roll up their sleeves and buckle down to learning practical color repro theory. (Not beating you up here; we've all been guilty of this at some point.)
...it became principle for me to understand why this is happening.
Yes.  If you expect to produce truly "good" color, it's up to you to understand the principles and processes involved (and their limitations) in order to intelligently tweak those limitations to advantage. It doesn't happen overnight. It's not something you achieve in one image and thereafter have a formulaic solution for every image thereafter. It cones with study, continual practice, and ongoing experience. It's not a one-size-fits-all something which someone can step you through with a bunch of specific settings in an online forum thread.
As a good start: Acquire a copy of Professional Photoshop by Dan Margulis. Any edition will do. (There were five or six--get as many as you can find.) Read it. Read it again. And again. Then keep it as an onshelf reference. And use the principles of color correction (as opposed to mere color calibration) it teaches in every image you prepare for offset printing. You'll get better at it as you go, but you'll never achieve a single set of adjustments or settings that work for every image.

  • RGB to CMYK to commercial printer

We are using CS2 InDesign and Photoshop 7 on a PC. I am putting together two
large books. One insert section of the first book has color photos. I have
to prepare these color photos for a printer located in China. They want all
    images to be CMYK .tiff.
I have an assortment of about 100 images from various sources around the
world, there are .tif, .jpg. .bmp, and .psd. All of them appear to be RGB.
There are images with: 1) no color profile, 2) sRGB IE60966-2.1, and Adobe
RGB 1998. Do all images need to have the same RGB color profile before
    converting to CMYK?
I have been converting all of these to .tif (and using a single dpi/pixel
    resolution for
    all images).
Do I just select/save as color mode CMYK? Or are there special
settings/profiles I need to know about. Is there anything special for China?
The printer's English is not that clear . I was hoping that someone in this
group would be familiar with RGB to CMYK conversion.
Also, it appears that the final PDF pages (with embedded Tiff images) will
be very large. The first complete book for this project (there are two
books) looks like it will be about 20GB. The second book looks like it could
be 12GB. Both books together equal about 1,000 pages and have about 1,000
images. 90% of the images are grayscale. What are the current technologies
for sending large projects like this to a printer?
    Thanks
ps, the Photoshop group suggested that I write to this group.

    Tech....
In the conversions, are you referring to conversions of B&W or color images? I'll assume color for the moment.
Assuming your monitor is properly calibrated, and assuming you are viewing your color images on your monitor, your conversions should keep "in gamut" colors the same. You will, however, probably see some loss of dynamic range, color, and saturation as you enter CMYK. If the color and dynamic range of the original is all within the destination CMYK gamut, you should see very little, if any, shift. The sad fact is that CMYK on press has limited dynamic range and color, especially compared to a bright monitor. This is generally true, though CMYK can print some colors that lie outside the typical monitor's gamut.
If you have a brightly colored original in RGB mode, then you should experiment with both perceptual and relative colorimetric rendering to see which one looks best. This is an image by image thing. Relative colorimetric will reproduce all "in gamut colors" as accurately as possible, then will take out of gamut colors and bring them to the closest printable color. This can cause loss of detail and 'piling up of colors' as you near the boundaries of the image's color gamut in the destination CMYK space. Perceptual scales ALL colors and preserves the relationships between colors, which sacrifices color accuracy and saturation, but sometimes looks more natural, especially if there are a LOT of out of gamut colors. Pick whichever ones looks best overall.
Then, once in CMYK, make minor curves adjustments to tweak if for CMYK. Just be careful not to push it too far, especially in the deep shadows, since you may push beyond the ink limit of the press. For example, if you convert to US Web Coated SWOP v2, the ink limits are set at 300 total. If you drastically darken the shadow areas, you could end up with an ink limit of 320, 330, 350, etc. Knowing the ink limit of the press will help you stay within those limits. Final tweaking in CMYK is usually a good thing.
How did you determine that the images were dull with too much magenta? Did you print a proof on a calibrated printer, or is this just your screen display? Or is this from a printed image off the press? I have a well calibrated monitor and accurate custom profiles for my inkjet. If I am sending a job to a press that supposedly prints to US Web Coated SWOP, I can proof that file on my inkjet and get a very good match. We need more information to know exactly what you are doing and how you are assessing your images.
Normally, I do the conversion in Photoshop, using the rendering intent that looks best. Then I tweak the image in CMYK to get it looking its best. I usually have the press profile, but sometimes work with a standard profile if no custom profile is available. I leave the image tagged with my conversion profile. Then, I usually place these images into InDesign, with the profile intact (color management turned on in InDesign). I right click on the placed image to be sure that the profile and rendering intent are set to what I want. Then, I can either supply the InDesign file to the printer, or convert to PDF (leave color unchanged) and make sure that all profiles are included. InDesign should export each image to the PDF properly, along with profile and intent. I have never sent to job to press using Photoshop...only InDesign or Illustrator.
BTW, rendering intent is only used when getting an image from one color space to another, such as a conversion from RGB to CMYK. You do that, choosing the one that looks the best. Once it is in the destination CMYK space, rendering intent is no longer needed, since all the colors and tones have already been remapped into the final space. Rendering intent is just used to help us handle those out of gamut colors.
    Hope this helps.

  • Gradients dropping out when opening PDFs in Illustrator

Hi everyone. I work for a large format printing company. We receive thousands of files every year from many different designers. We started to notice that gradients would drop out of some PDFs when opening them in Illustrator but they would preview fine when opened in Acrobat. I searched high and low for an explanation for this glitch. The only response I received is "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
    Workaround for CMYK Gradients
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: DeviceCMYK
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: Spot Color
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient toCMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the DeviceN spot color that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Please test it and let me know if you run into any issues with these workarounds.  I'm always looking for new problems to solve!

you said--"...needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue"
Your workarounds seem time consuming and (possibly) unnecessary for the following reasons:
    1. large format printers use 4-8 colors to achieve color (so spot colors shouldn't be an issue)
    2. Acrobat Pro has it's own 'preflight' function that works fairly well
additionally (don't know if you know this) there is an add-on to acrobat called 'Pitstop' (google it) that allows just about any change/correction/alteration to be made to a PDF
...and...opening a PDF in illustrator (that wasn't created in illustrator--do you know how to determine this?) can lead to many problems i.e. gradients dropping out, text reflow, etc.
as far as testing your workarounds, seriously, who has the time when there are tools available that make using them unnecessary (this assumes that you have created these 'workarounds' to match your worflow--but a nearly pure PDF workflow should work in this day and age, depending on your RIP and software).

  • Convert text in PDF to pure black

    Hi all,
I have spent hours researching this with little to show for it, so I thought it's time to ask for help.
I am dealing with a situation where I need a batch solution to change the color of all the (vector) text in a PDF document to pure black.
From my research, I understand that:
    1) It is not possible to do this in JS.
    2) If I simply wanted to change the color of text from color to grayscale, I can use "Convert Colors" under Print Production to change the color space.
    3) I can select the "edit text & images" command, select all objects in the page, and change the font color to black. But this method requires repeating the same for every page, and is not practicable for PDFs with many pages.
I have experimented using different conversion profiles (Gray Gamma, Dot Gain), but in all cases, I have been unable to change the color of text to black. It remains at gray, or is changed into a different shade of gray.
    My question here is this:
When I select an object and go to the color tab of the Object Properties box, I see "Black & White" as one of the color spaces that I can choose to convert to in the drop down list. See screenshot immediately below:
If I choose "Black & White", and click the "Convert Colors" button, the text gets converted to pure black. But this method only works object by object.
But under the "Convert Colors" in "Print Production", the "Black & White" option which is available earlier is not available. See screenshot immediately below:
Why is that the case and what can I do if I want to batch convert all the text in my PDF doc to the "Black & White" color space so as to change the color of the text to pure black?
    Thanks.
    Best,
    Jay

    Hi Jay ,
Which version of Acrobat are you using?
If it is one of the old versions ,try updating it the latest one and see if that helps.
Launch Acrobat>Navigate to Help>Check for updates.
The second image that you have sent ,there is an option as "preserve black" in the same dialog box.Check mark that option and see if it helps.
Let us know how it goes.

  • PDF Export settings in InDesign (color)

    Hi,
I was wondering which colour management settings to use when I export an InDesign CS3 document to a pdf (for press output).
This is the situation. I create an InDesign document in cmyk-working space X (in this case Fogra27 (Europe Prepress)). I add a few photos (prepared in Photoshop and in Photoshop converted to cmyk-working space X again). Illustrator files are also natively created in the same cmyk-space X.
When I export this to pdf I use the following color output setting:
    color conversion: no color conversion
Profile inclusion policy: Include all profiles.
This way, I think, the pdf embeds all profiles and does no conversion. If I send it to a printing shop that uses colour management itself, things should work out fine. Am I right in thinking this?
    Cheers,
    johan

In theory all should be well, if you are happy with the consequences
    of profile-to-profile conversion on CMYK.

  • .MOD files in Quicktime won't play

I'm trying to convert .mod files into MPEG files. I'm working on an
iMac 3.06 GHz Inteal Core Duo. I shot video on Canon FS100 camera and
when I uploaded the video and the files are ".MOD"s. I can't play them
on my computer. I changed the file extension to .MPG. but it won't
play on my quicktime (Version 7.5.5 (249.24). How can I get these to
    play?

Checking the forums, I found threads that point to using Streamclip. I tried it and got this message:
"You will miss the two most important features of MPEG Streamclip:
    - you won't be able to play MPEG-2 files and transport streams;
    - you won't be able to convert MPEG-2 files and transport streams to QuickTime, DV, AVI.
However, all other features are always available, including playback and conversion of MPEG-1 to QuickTime, DV, AVI, demuxing of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, AC3 decoding, and conversion from transport streams to MPEG files (useful if you have Toast 6).
MPEG Streamclip is free of charge but the MPEG-2 Playback Component has a small price (around $20/£15/€20 in most countries); you can buy it online from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2"
Is this really the only way?

  • PDF exported from InDesign missing background when opened in Illustrator

Hello, I am having a bit of a frustrating problem.
I'm working on graphics for a large project, and I have to get some of my files from InDesign into Illustrator (they are both CS5) for our printer.
I would have normally designed them in Illustrator but ALL my graphics are in InDesign and we just found out once we started on production that he needs AI and needs our trim path set up for our irregular shapes.
For MOST of the documents, its been pretty easy (exporting to PDF > opening in illustrator and making a cut path > saving as AI) however I have this one file that is making me lose my mind.
When I export it as PDF, it opens perfectly and looks normal in acrobat, and I also check it out in preview as well. The background shows up and everything. However when I open the PDF in illustrator it completely loses the background. I noticed it doing this before for a couple graphics, but I assumed that was because they had gradients drop shadows and transparencies and all that. This file has nothing weird except for a gradient grey background.
Help? I'm including some screenshots of whats happening in the hopes that you guys can help solve it.
So here we have me saving it, then opening it in Acrobat to check stuff out.
Now here is what happens when I open it in Illustrator:

  • Bugs in PDF workflow/ Quartz Filters?

I've  noticed several issues with PDF workflows in Lion that seem to have gone wrong. Whether deliberately or not, I don't know.
    1. If you Export a PDF from Preview with a Quartz Filter, that filter is not applied to the copy of the PDF in Preview's window, though the file on disk does get the filter applied. If you close and reload the PDF, the effects of filter will be displayed.
    2. If you create a new Quartz Filter in ColorSync Utility, it doesn't work.
Even duplicating an existing system filter, like "Gray Tone", doesn't work when you apply it to a PDF document in ColorSync Utility.
    3. If you do have any user quartz filters, they don't show up in Preview's Export file dialog, unless you copy them from ~/Library/Filters to ~/Library/PDF Services.
There are several webpages about this.
    4. Save As PDF-X has disappeared from the PDF button of the print menu.
I have seen other webpages that mention this.
All these issues are on both of my Macs, so I don't think it's a local problem, though I would be grateful for any confirmation.

    Thanks Benwiggy for that tip.
I am still running Snow Leopard due to things dropped in Lion.
I needed fax capability before I could move to Lion.
I was also waiting for the bugs to get worked out because I will lose some time when changing over.
I still have the menu item with Snow Leopard but the work flow for PDF-X is now broken as well.
I have not always had Acrobat pro.
I am famialure with inserting, extracting, and typing information on PDF documents as one would need to do in an office.
I had always used preview and the PDF-X "save as" feature to embed fonts.
I see there is a save as format to  "PDF/X" in Acrobat Pro v9.0.
There is a settings button next to the save as box.
It has four different settings or flavors of PDF/x:
    PDF/X-1a
    PDF/X-3
    PDF/X-4
    PDF/X-4p.
Then there is a conversion box that allows input of a "conversion profile".
There there is a viewing or printing condition box as well.
As you can see I don't work with colors much.  It is all about preserving the text and images in a document as everything is usually black and white or grey scale.
What setting for PDF/X would you suggest if "font" embedding was an issue and it was desirable to preserve the text and images as they were, without regard to color correcton.
Thanks in advance for your reply.
