Decommissioning Hybrid Deployment

Hi there,
We are currently running Exchange 2010 and an Exchange 2013 server deployed in a Hybrid set-up with all of our users now migrated to Office 365.
I plan to decommission both Exchange servers but after reading this article: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/12/05/decommissioning-your-exchange-2010-servers-in-a-hybrid-deployment.aspx it recommends keeping one Exchange server on-premise
or it will have 'adverse effects'.
What are these adverse effects and why should I need to keep hosting an on-premise server when it will not be doing anything?
Thanks
Ryan

After speaking with O365 support they have advised that the 'adverse effect' is that you can no longer update certain mail attributes for AD users once the last server has been decommissioned.
For example you would need to use ADSI edit to add a proxy address, which is unsupported.
Decommissioning your Exchange 2010 servers in a Hybrid Deployment
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/12/05/decommissioning-your-exchange-2010-servers-in-a-hybrid-deployment.aspx
Mailbox Management
Organizations that have configured a hybrid deployment for mailbox management and hybrid feature support have also configured Office 365 Active Directory synchronization (DirSync) for user and identity
management. For organizations intending on keeping DirSync in place and continuing to manage user accounts from the on-premises organization, we recommend not removing the last Exchange 2010 server from the on-premises organization.
If the last Exchange server is removed, you cannot make changes to the mailbox object in Exchange Online because the source of authority is defined as on-premises. The
source of authority refers to the location where Active Directory directory service objects, such as users and groups, are mastered (an original source that defines copies of an object) in a hybrid deployment. If you
needed to edit most mailbox settings, you would have to be sure the Active Directory schema was extended on-premises and use unsupported tools such as Active Directory Service Interfaces Editor (ADSI Edit) for common administrative tasks. For example,
adding a proxy address or putting a mailbox on litigation hold when there isn’t an Exchange Management Console (EMC) or Exchange Management Shell (Shell) on-premises becomes difficult and these simple (and other more complex) tasks cannot be done in a supported
way.
Note: A hybrid deployment is not required in order to manage Exchange objects from an on-premises organization. You can effectively manage Exchange objects with an on-premises Exchange server even
if you do not have an organization relationship, Federation Trust, and third-party certificate in place. This Exchange server gives you a supported method for creating and managing your Exchange recipient objects. It is recommended to use Exchange Server 2010
for management tasks since this will give you the option to create objects such as remote mailboxes with the New-RemoteMailbox cmdlet. The server role needed is at least a Client Access Server (CAS) role, for management tools to work properly.

  • Decomission Exchange Server in Hybrid Deployment with Exchange online

Referencing tech net article titled: Decommissioning your Exchange 2010 servers in a Hybrid Deployment ( I am not able to link to it due for some reason)
I was also not able to comment directly on the article, would appreciate if the author or someone in the know could kindly review my comment/question below and provide feedback:
So as I understand it if we used Hybrid mode as our method to migrate to O365 we must now keep an aging onPremise exchange server for time eternal?  This is not practical or sustainable as the whole point of going to O365 was to get rid of our old Exchange
server.  Now we have to keep and maintain expensive hardware and keep windows patched and maintained etc, all the tasks we thought we were moving away from with this migration.  What happens when Exchange 2010 reaches EOL?  Do we then have to
upgrade a server we are not really using?
Please tell me there is an update to this article or an update in the works with a more sustainable solution to cut ties with old on-prem Exchange servers after migrating to O365.  Is there an update or something in the works?  Is there anyway
I can speak to someone on this in more detail to better understand the details to the downsides listed in this article?  We very much want to shutdown our on prem server ASAP as we are shutting down our datacenter since moving to O365 and this is the
    only kink hold us back.
    Thanks.

If you have the infrastructure, you could move to a virtual server, and upgrade to Exchange 2013. There is a free license for Exchange 2013 when used hybrid server.
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2939261?wa=wsignin1.0
I have to admit to being slightly confused about the conditions for obtaining the hybrid license as it says you can't already have a licensed Exchange server.  So what do you do if you had Exchange and then migrated to Office 365 rather than created
    the hybrid initially?

    Hello Joshywahcho ,<o:p></o:p>
First Check  is the MRS proxy is enabled or not and restart the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service and
    IIS on Hybrid .<o:p></o:p>
As now Microsoft has change the procedure to roll back the mailbox from O365, please follow the below mention Step<o:p></o:p>
Moved the affected user's mailbox to the Hybrid Server from Office 365 <o:p></o:p>
Connect to Exchange Online using remote PowerShell<o:p></o:p>
    Ran the command
    $Credentials = Get-Credential<o:p></o:p>
    Ran the command
New-MoveRequest -identity <e-mail address of the affected user> -OutBound -RemoteTargetDatabase "Name of the Datbase" -RemoteHostName <Your Host Name> -RemoteCredential $Credentials -TargetDeliveryDomain <Your Target Delivery Domain><o:p></o:p>
    Ran the command
Get-MoveRequest -Identity <e-mail address of the user> to check the status of mailbox move<o:p></o:p>
once the mailbox move from Office 365 to Hybrid Server was completed then initiated a Mailbox move from the Hybrid Server to On-premise server <o:p></o:p>
Mailbox was moved successfully from Hybrid Server to the On-premise server .<o:p></o:p>
checked in the On-premise server 2007 and the affected user's mailbox was showing there<o:p></o:p>

  • Migration From Exchange 2010 Hybrid to Exchange 2013 Hybrid Deployment

    hi,
I have existing Exchange Server 2010 Hybrid Deployment. Planning to migrate to Exchange 2013. However, while schema update, i am facing some errors/warnings as can be seen in attached screenshot.
I have already checked and current functional level in DC is Windows Server 2003. What could be the best steps to troubleshoot the problems and proceed further with Exchange 2013 installation?
    Thanks

    Hi Muhammad
Can you please give few more information about your environment  so that people around here can help you out
I have existing Exchange Server 2010 Hybrid Deployment - Do you have Exchange 2010 and Office 365 in a
    hybrid setup now ?
Are you trying to upgrade your on premise Exchange 2010 servers to Exchange 2013 ?
Or Are you trying to migrate your on premise Exchange 2010 to a different forest to Exchange 2013 ?
You can try the below suggestions-
I would better suggest you to follow Microsoft Exchange Server Deployment Assistant - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/dn756393.aspx
Also i would recommend you to check the prerequisites for hybrid deployment with office 365

  • Exchange 2013 Hybrid Deployment, on-premise to multiple Office 365 tenants

Hello, we are in the early stages of planning an Exchange 2013 hybrid deployment for a federation of education organisations.
We are planning to use a single on-premise Exchange organisation for staff mailboxes across all member organisations, each member already has it's own Office 365 tenancy for students, which we would like to maintain if possible.
My question is, is it possible (and supported) for an Exchange hybrid deployment with a single on-premise organisation with multiple Office 365 tenants, my understanding is that only a 1:1 deployment is supported, can somebody confirm or clarify this ?
    Thanks

I think if you have different AD sites then you can install the DirSync or ADFS for each of them and have one way replication. I 'd aks this question to Office365 Forum and support.

  • Certificate configuring for exchange 2013 and office 365 hybrid deployment

Please advise on what digital certificate requirements for hybrid deployment and to configure it.

    Hi sphilip,
If you want to deploy AD FS with Single Sign-On(SSO), we need use certificate to establish secure trust between on-premises Exchange 2013 and Office online.
We can use and configure a trusted third-part CA within all on-premises Exchange 2013 Mailbox and Client Access servers to ensure secure mail transport, more details about

  • Office 365: Configure Public Folder for a Hybrid Deployment

    All,
I am going to sync the public folder from exchange 2010 to
office 365. We have a Exchange hybrid 2013. Based on this article below,
    it states:
"If your public folders are on Exchange 2010 or
later servers, then you need to install the Client Access Server role on
all mailbox servers that have a public folder database. "
    We
have HA CAS on Exchange 2010. I am not sure anything happens that I
install the CAS on mailbox server.  Please give me your advices on this
    situation.
on the other hand, I have ideas in my mind that I can
copy the public folders databases on Exchange 2010 to Exchange hybrid
2010 which has the CAS role and mailbox role.
Please assist me with these situations.

  • Exchange 2013 Certificates for Hybrid Deployment Clarification

I have an Exchange 2013 servers (CAS and Mailbox on separate server) which I wanted to setup for Hybrid deployment. I already have a certificate acquired from 3rd party with 3 names (mail, autodiscover and owa). the certificate was installed in the
CAS server. As per the hybrid deployment documentation I need also to install a certificate in the mailbox server, questions:
    1. Can I use the same certificate for installation in the mailbox server?
    2. Can I also use the same certificate in the Hybrid Configuration wizard for the "certificate to use with securing the hybrid mail transport"?
    3. Do I need to include the primary smtp domain (xxxxx.com) in the certificate since current configuration points to the mail.xxx.com as the certificate common name?

    Hi,
Here are my answers you can refer to:
    1. It depends.
The certificate used for hybrid secure mail transport must be installed on all on-premises Exchange 2013 Mailbox and Client Access servers.
If you're configuring a hybrid deployment in an organization that has Exchange servers deployed in multiple Active Directory forests, you must use a separate third-party CA certificate for each Active Directory forest.
    2. Yes. But we recommend that you use a dedicated third-party certificate for any optional AD FS server, another certificate for the Exchange services for your hybrid deployment, and if needed, another certificate on your Exchange servers for other needed
    services or features.
    3. Yes. Here are the minimum suggested FQDNs that should be included on certificates: domain.com, autodiscover.domain.com, edge.domain.com
For more information, you can refer to the following article:

  • Exchange 2013 Hybrid Deployment issues.

    Hello.
i have an issue when configuring Exchange hybrid deployment in my environment.
when i complete the Exchange hybrid wizard and OAuth is finished our exchange environment will not receive emails from the "internet" as in senders outside the company.
mail will can be sent out and will flow between internal users.
when i check the message trace on 365 the emails were failing with the following error.
Users were also getting a bounce back saying
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550 5.4.1 [[email protected]]: Recipient address rejected: Access denied
i wondered if it had anything to do with the MX record on our public DNS, i changed this to the one recommended by O365 domain DNS assistant, but this made no odds,
it looks like it could be a receive connector issue however i am new to exchange so i am still learning.
the only way to fix the issue was to run Remove-Hybridconfiguration on the Exchange 2013 server, when this finished and few moments had passed mail began being received from the internal again.
Any Suggestions on what could be caused
    many thanks

Make sure the accepted SMTP domains in the Office 365 EAC are set to Internal Relay rather then Authoritative.

  • Is Reverse Proxy required for Hybrid deployment

    Hi everyone,
We plan to deploy a new infrastructure on prem attached to O365.
The aim of this deployment is to create lync meeting on the on prem FE server which will be accessible by O365 Lync users. (FI: these meetings will be created on prem because the customer wants to cascade Lync conference with his Polycom video conferencing
    infrastructure).
Some users are homed on-premises and some users are homed online, but the all users share the same SIP domain. Is Reverse Proxy on prem will be required for O365 users to join meetings created on the on-premise FE or the O365 architecture
    can handle it?
The only functionality needed is meeting (not mobility). I saw this (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/cf4f63f9-355f-475b-8148-608633adfe86/is-reverse-proxy-necessary-for-lync-hybrid-deployment?forum=lyncdeploy) but the functionality asked
    are different.
    Many thanks for your help.

You'll need a reverse proxy on premises to publish the external web services FQDN of your on-premises front end pool.  Meet will use this behind the scenes regardless of where it's pointing.  If you're hybrid, the DNS URLs should typically point
to your on-premises deployment however anyway:

  • How to change primary ADFS server (3.0) on a hybrid deployment of Office365?

    Hi,
We have a hybrid deployment of Office 365 and on-premises services. I need to change my primary standalone ADFS 2.0 for a new deployment of ADFS Farm 3.0 with ADFS Proxy.
Do you have a step by step with the WAAD commands to achieve this task?
How much time does it take to apply the changes?
    Thank you very much.

Once you deploy the new farm, make sure it works as expected (check
    https://sts.domain.com/adfs/ls/idpinitiatedsignon.aspx). When ready,
change your firewall/LB to point to the new farm. If you have imported also the token signing/decrypting certificates, you should be all set. If you have generated new self-signed ones, you will have to run Update-MsolFederatedDomain cmdlet from
    the new farm.
Or do you mean step-by-step instructions for the actual ADFS install?

  • LYNC 2010 hybrid deployment support

    Hi,
We are currently using Microsoft LYNC 2010 on premise. Which is working fine.
We are thinking of moving to office 365 for exchange etc. As we a partners we receive licenses also for LYNC online. I was wondering we have some users in the UK Maylasia etc, we would like them to use the LYNC online features as we here in Australia are
on the LYNC on premise. We would eventually all be under the same domain.
ie users [email protected] would be the username for office 365 login,
If user A was in Au he would connect to the on premise link
If user is in Uk or not setup to au LYNC server he can login to the online LYNC??

    Hi,
Lync server 2010 is not support hybrid deployment. Hybrid deployment will be supported by Lync server 2013.

  • Lync 2010 hybrid deployment

I am wondering if it is possible to have on premise mediation server deployed for Enterprise voice and use Office 365 for rest of the features. Is this type of installation possible? If so, please point me to some relevant documentation.

    Hi,
Splitting workload between office 365 Lync online and Lync 2010 on-prem isn't supported. You can enable federation between Lync on-premise and online by using different sip domains.
However , hybrid deployment is supported on Lync 2013. Following link may help you ;http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204805(v=ocs.15).aspx
    Thanks

  • Lync Hybrid Deployment and Dial-in Conferencing

I know this question could fall under community.office365.com forum, but didn't get any response there...
I'm looking at a possible Lync Hybrid deployment. All users will be hosted in the cloud, but we're looking at hybrid on-prem Lync deployment so we can connect a trunk from our IP PBX and use the on-prem server for Lync dial-in conferencing. We have a separate
phone system and users will use those phones to simply dial in to the Lync dial-in conference bridge for audio conferencing meetings.
Is this even possible with Hybrid deployment?
    Thanks in advance!

Lync online doesn't support Hybrid Voice, please check out: http://pei.com/2014/03/lync-hybrid-deployments-with-enterprise-voice/
