Decompile a CHM file
I have a CHM file I would like to decompile and I follow the
instructions to do so (through the HTML Help Studio), but I keep
getting the error:
HTML Help Studio
Invalidate target path name.
OK
I am trying to extract to a valid network drive that I have
full access to. Can someone please help?
Thanks!
HI again
Are you talking about a compiled .CHM? When you move the .CHM
you get the message? If so, take a look at the following link:

Help importing a decompiled .chm file
Hello,
I was recently trying to decompile a .chm file (following the
knowledge base instructions) and then importing that file into
RoboHelp. The file appeared to decompile correctly, but when I
loaded the project into RoboHelp, many images were missing. Is
there something else I should be doing or is this a known problem?
I am using RH6.
Thanks,
AaronHmm...
Ok, I tried a couple things:
1. Created the folder in RH per both of your suggestions.
Result: RH still not seeing the files.
2. Create a new Sub-Folder in the Project directory folder
containing a copy of all the images and also created a folder with
the same name in the RH Images tree.
Result: RH still not seeing the files.
In all cases the files exist in the expected folders when
viewed in Explorer but only a subset appear in RH (the same subset
in all cases).
My dir structure looks like:
c:\project_folder containing all files
with
c:\project_folder\project_images containing a copy of the
image files
I have created a folder in the RH Image tree names
project_images.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks for the help (and putting up with my lack of knowledge
here).

Decompiling chm file with Robohelp 7
I am evaluating Robohelp 7. I am trying to decompile a chm
file and cannot find where this feature is located in Robohelp 7.
Does anyone know? The older version had the feature in the Tools
tab. Robohelp 7 does not have a Tools tab.Peter, I was directed to your website. I successfully
decompiled the chm file and found out that it was created using
Flare. The source files are missing. Can you point me to
information on how to create an hhp file? I downloaded the product
you recommended on your web site, HHP builder. I tried opening the
HELP so I can get instructions on using it and the help will not
open. Can you recommend a web site that provides information on how
to use HHP builder? -
Derive project file from compiled chm file
Hello. I have CHM file which I wish to edit. I can de-compile
using HTML Help Workshop, but I do not get the Project file, which
I need to import back into Robohelp.
Can anyone tell me how to do this derivation? I need to use
Robohelp for this action.
Thanks.Hi, tanguero33484,
If you're having the same problems as me accessing Peter
Grainge's site at the moment, the short answer to you question is:
decompile the .chm file with KeyTools, which is available from
here:
http://www.keyworks.net/keytools.htm
Its decompile function provides the option to re-create the
.hhp file — albeit an approximation of the original.
Edit: Looks like Peter's site is back again!

I inherited a user manual, originally in the form of a
monolithic MS Word document from which PDFs could be created in any
number of ways - and an outsourced RH *.chm help file.
We have moved to the Tech Comm Suite (patched.to latest
level).
I have successfully converted the manual to a FM book, the
PDF's are fine and I can even generate an RH file - of sorts.
To get the RH formating to be as before I tried to
open/import/... the old CHM file - without success, despite the
existence of instructions how to do it in the RH Help - do a search
on "Decompile". The so-called HTML studio doesn't exist in the TCS
version of RH.
(There are third party decompilers, but they are less than
satisfactory since there is no obvious way to use their output with
RH.)
What now?Hi all
As my friend and colleague Peter stated, the offline help
works better. So why my post? It's to advise that you may need to
close and restart RoboHelp in order to see a change in the help you
get from RoboHelp. At least, on my PC I have to. Maybe others will
be different. But I thought I'd mention it in case you decide to
try it and didn't see anything change.

How ro compare 2 chm files? or use track changes in xpj project?
Hello,
I'm using robohelp#7 and was wondering if there's a way to compare 2 output chm files in such a way that only shows the delta, i.e the changes made from previous version? alternatively, is there a way to see track changes in the xpj project?
Thx for all who can assist here,
TaliaUnfortunately the answers to both your questions are not as straightforward as you may wish.
A CHM file is a compiled file so it would be very difficult to compare its contents with decompiling it first. You can decompile a CHM from inside RoboHelp by using the HTML Workshop tool. If you do this to both CHM you can then compare each file's contents. I use the ExamDiffs Application for what it is worth.
As for track changes, this can't be done directly from the topic editor in RoboHelp. However if you use the in build RoboSource Control application (or indeed most other source control applications) you can not only record what changes have been made but some also allow you to compare versions.

I was asked to devise a way to protect our finished product... the CHM file. Protect it from copy, theft and alteration. I came up with only two things, neither of which are options in RoboHelp9. Does anyone else protect their generated help files? And if so, how do you do it?
This is what I have come up with:
Security -
The Digital Help File System is comprised of four (4) separtely compiled Windows CHM help files. They can be copied and decompiled in the appropriate program. To prevent this and secure the Digital Help File system on a workstation, take the following steps during installation:
PART I (making the help files hidden)
Step 1 - Create a new folder on the desktop by right mouse clicking anywhere on a clear area of the desktop and selecting the option from the drop down list that will appear.
Step 2 - Place the newly created folder in an isolated area of the desktop so that it can be easily accessed by rolling over it with the mouse in later steps.
Step 3 - Right mouse click on the new folder and select the properties option from the drop down list.
Step 4 - In the New Folder Properties dialog box, click on the Customize tab, then the Change Icon... button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Step 5 - Scroll through the icons available with the right moving scroll bar underneath, until a clear or invisible icon is presented. Select it, then click the OK button to close the Change Icon for New Folder dialog box. Then click Apply and the OK button to close the New Folder Properities dialog box.
Step 6 - The new folder becomes invisible on the desktop. Next, select and highlight the name of the new folder, which is still visible and press Alt+255 to make it invisible as well.
Step 7 - Remember where this folder is on the desktop, then drag the four (4) .chm files onto it. They will disappear from the desktop when pasted into the invisible folder.
Step 8 - In the windows file manager then invisible folder can be selected and moved to an unobtrusive area of the hard disk. Do not place it in a directory that routinely gets updates that might erase the directory with the files in it.
Step 9 - Redirect all callups to your programs from their new location. -
Index in .chm file is incorrect
Hi,
I'm using RoboHelp X5 with Windows XP SP3. I have an index that is correct in RoboHelp but not in the .chm file. In RoboHelp, I have General Ledger as a keyword and several sub-keywords. However, in the .chm file, the sub-keywords show up under General Ledger Journal instead of General Ledger. I've attached screen shots of both at the bottom of this post, and I've pasted the applicable section of the project's .hhk file. (The .hhk file is really long, so I didn't want to insert the whole thing.)
While troubleshooting this issue, my coworker changed the keyword from General Ledger to General edger, and that fixed the problem, but obviously we can't keep it that way.
I tried the following:
Compared that section of the HHK file to others. I may have missed something, but it looked OK to me.
Started the project, deleted the HHK file, and then saved a change to the index so RH regenerated the HHK file.
Deleted the .cpd file.
Deleted and reentered all of the keywords.
When the issue first started, the General Ledger subkeywords appeared under Future Periods instead of General Ledger Journal - I'm not sure what I did to change that, but I think it was when I deleted and then reentered the Future Periods keyword.
Unfortunately, none of these worked.I saw another thread with a similar issue where the solution was to create a second index and copy the keywords to it, but I don't think X5 allows a second index.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

</html>Hi there
Are you using any Build Tags along with a Build Expression to control the output?
I ask because the screen capture of the CHM seems to intimate that General Ledger is absent from the list. If it was linked to a topic and the topic was removed from the build, it would seem to make sense.

SUMMARY
Hyperlinks to XLS, DOC, and PDF files that are included in a
.chm file (and the Baggage Files) only work intermittently. The
only solution appears to be deleting the Temporary Internet Files.
PROBLEM
1. I place the XLS, DOC, or PDF file in the Windows
sub-directory that corresponds to the RoboHelp project sub-folder
where the topic in which I’ll place the hyperlink exists.
2. I open the help project in RoboHelp HTML.
3. I right-click on the project’s Baggage Files
sub-folder that corresponds to the Windows sub-directory in which I
placed the XLS, DOC, or PDF file (in step 1).
4. I import the XLS, DOC, or PDF file.
5. I open the topic in which I’m going to place the
hyperlink in the WYSIWYG editor.
6. I “drag and drop” the Baggage File into the
topic (in the WYSIWYG editor) to create a link to it.
7. I save the changes and then generate HTML (.chm) help.
8. I open the .chm file and click the hyperlink. The XLS,
DOC, or PDF file may or may not open.
9. When the hyperlink works correctly, for DOC and XLS files,
a “File Download – Security Warning” dialog box
appears asking, “Do you want to open or save this
file?”. The buttons that are available are
“Open”, “Save”, and “Cancel”.
These buttons work then as one would expect. (When the hyperlink
works correctly for a PDF file, it simply opens the PDF file in a
new window; there’s no prompt to save, open, or cancel.)
10. When a hyperlink does NOT work, for DOC, XLS, and PDF
files, no dialog box or other visual message is displayed. Instead,
the sound that is associated with the “Exclamation”
program event is played (the “Windows XP
Exclamation.wav” file is the WinXP default).
Other Notes:
- The hyperlinks ALWAYS work when I view a topic using the
“View Selected Item” function (Ctrl+W) in the RoboHelp
HTML project.
- Once a hyperlink stops working, it will not start working
again until I delete all the Temporary Internet Files.
- A hyperlink will stop working even if Internet Explorer
(iexplore.exe) is closed the entire time.
WORKAROUND
Through trial and error, I have discovered that if a
hyperlink stops working, I can get it to work again using the
following steps:
1. Leave the .chm file open.
2. Open Internet Explorer.
3. Click Tools>Internet Options….
4. From the “Internet Options” dialog box, select
the “General” tab.
5. Under the “Temporary Internet Files” section,
click the “Delete Files…” button.
6. From the “Delete Files” dialog box, select
“Delete all offline content” and then click
“OK”. The files are deleted and the “Delete
Files” dialog box closes.
7. Click “OK” to close the “Internet
Options” dialog box.
8. Without closing Internet Explorer and without re-starting
the .chm file, all the hyperlinks that didn’t work before
will now work.

- A file will appear here even if I click “Save”
and then click “Cancel” from the subsequent “Save

- If I click “Cancel” from the “File
Download – Security Warning” dialog box, the file does
not appear in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
- When a file does appear in the Temporary Internet Files
folder, its Internet Address is displayed similar to the following:
“ms-its:C:\PrimaryProjectFolder\ProjectName.chm::/SubFolderName/FileName.xls”
“View Objects…”
Here’s a list of all the program files that appear:

Today is 12/18/06 so the only program file that is listed as
having been “Last Accessed” today is the
“Shockwave Flash Object”.
REQUEST FOR HELP
I really want to include certain PDF, DOC, and XLS files in
their native format in a .chm file. However, I need a better
solution to my problem than the one I discovered. What I really
want is to avoid the entire problem altogether.
Have anyone seen this before or have any suggestions? You wont be able to do that. The embedded objects would appear as images only.

- AngelThis could be a Launch Services issue. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
5. Click the Execute button.
6. Restart the computer.
BTW, if you’re running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), as your profile indicates, it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Tiger forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance. -
Link to a pdf page on web from a chm file
Hello,
I'm using RoboHelp 9.0.2. I'm trying to create a link in a chm file to a specific pdf page using a URL. The link I am using is http://www.actuarialstandardsboard.org/pdf/exposure/ASOP_No27_second%20exposure_2011.pdf#p age=41
I put the above line in my chm file. It appears correctly in the URL project list and shows correctly when I choose Show. It also apeears to be correct in the HTML code of the page.
However when I create the chm clicking on the link just brings me the start of the pdf file. After clicking on the link in the chm file and explorer opens, the URL in explorer does not show #page=41. It ends at.pdf.
Am I missing something or does anyone kno whys this is not working?
Thanks
JohnHi there
That link doesn't even work for me when I paste it into the address bar of my Firefox browser. It does work in IE, but not in Firefox. In Firefox it opens the PDF generically.
I tested in a CHM and it did try and link, but it presents a black page. Looks like the correct page, but it's blacked out.
CHM files rely upon elements of Internet Explorer to display their content. So perhaps it's something specific to a certain version of Internet Explorer as well as a certain version of the Acrobat Reader.

How can I remove the Location column from the search results in a .chm file?
I generated the file in Robohelp HTML 9.
As far as I know it's used when you've combined more than one source into the final help file. It is possible (though I don't remember doing it) that I did that once a couple of years ago but now I'm only using one source - the project that's generating the .chm.
Can anyone tell me how I can remove it?
Thanks

Hi All,
I have created .chm file. Now I want to open specific htm file on press of F1 on the form. How do I give the path ? I am using following code to call chm file:
If pVal.MenuUID = "275" And pVal.BeforeAction = True Then
If SBO_Application.Forms.ActiveForm.TypeEx = "ChkRdo" Then
Dim psi As New ProcessStartInfo()
psi.UseShellExecute = True
psi.FileName = "C:\Documents and Settings\Harish Patil\Desktop\Checkbox and Option button\ChkOpt\ChkOpt\New_HTML_Help.chm"
Process.Start(psi)
BubbleEvent = False
End If
End If
This works fine but call the main chm file. How do I call specific file?
Thanks & RegardsHi Sheetal,
If u want to open a different file depending on the Form Type and if u dont have many different form types the i guess u can use the following code snippet.
If pVal.MenuUID = "275" And pVal.BeforeAction = True Then
If SBO_Application.Forms.ActiveForm.TypeEx = "ChkRdo" Then
Dim psi As New ProcessStartInfo()
psi.UseShellExecute = True
psi.FileName = "C:\Documents and Settings\Harish Patil\Desktop\Checkbox and Option button\ChkOpt\ChkOpt\New_HTML_Help.chm"
Process.Start(psi)
BubbleEvent = False
ElseIf SBO_Application.Forms.ActiveForm.TypeEx = "ChkRdo" Then
'Past the above same code with a different file name
End If
End If
like that u can open different files, or if u have name different files and forms.. then its better to use the Case statement instead of the If clause.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Vasu Natari. -
