Decreased battery life when Wi-Fi is OFF

Hey everyone...
I recently noticed that my MacBook Air late 2011 model running OS X 10.8.2 had a problem with the battery life when not connected to Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi was OFF. I noticed this recently when I was abroad and the hotel I was at had problems with it's internet connection, I booted up my MBA at 70% charge to finish this article I had to write and after 45 minutes or so my MacBook notifies me of low battery power. This never happens when I am connected to the internet.
Other than that, after upgrading to Mountain Lion I started having slow boot up and shutdown times on my MBA
Is there a problem with my configuration or hardware maybe or is this normal? (Both battery and slow shutdown and boot up times)

Not really a solution for my problem - wicd deamon starts automatic at boot, and I don't wan change this.

here is an interesting thing: take the iphone and set lock screen to never. Now make an email with siri--be sure to activate her with call button. get to the body and get some text in there. then just stop talking. LOCK SCREEN APPEARS!!!!!! and of course you draft is gone.
There does seem to be a work around for some--maybe all these issues. Don't use the call button--use the buttons on the phone.
Siri seems to behave properly with scenerio above---sans call button. She does not go to lock.

  • IPhone 3G TERRIBLE battery life when push is ON, great when push is OFF.

    Hey all,
So I've set up Nuevasync to keep my Google calendar synced over-the-air with my phone (it uses the exchange protocol so its a Push service).
I've been having absolutely horrible battery life ever since I got this phone but 2.1 made it even WORSE for me.
So I thought I'd try turning everything off to try to isolate what's causing the battery problem.
Solution? I turned off push and set fetch to manual. My phone has been in standby for 9 hours and has played music for 2 hours, and I still have about 90% battery remaining.
Perfect! Except..... why is push eating so much battery? If I turn it on, I can only get about 8 hours standby with a couple hours of usage before it needs a charge.

So how does RIM get push to go for days on a BlackBerry???
Push on a blackberry is a totally different animal than Push on an iPhone.
Basically Blackberry push can be thought of as an SMS that goes straight to your mail, addressbook, or calendar, and wakes up that application to do what ever is necessary (like connect and download the mail or whatever). (Its not REALLY an sms, but it works like that. I think Blackberry sends something like 5 bytes to the phone over the regular gsm network.)
They have this patented. And it requires a special network and special servers to support it.
Apple iPhone push uses a Microsoft technique, where the phone opens a TCP/IP connection to a server. If the server has some news for the phone, (calendar or mail) it sends it down that connection. If nothing comes across the wire for 12 minutes (or maybe 15, I forget the details) the connection closes.
Either of these two events trigger the phone to wake up and handle the event.
So the radio can never be totally off, it has to check the status of that connection every few seconds. Thats where your battery goes.
A rational approach would be to just use a special formatted SMS that the phone intercepts, but I think that Apple and Microsoft are worried about stepping on Blackberry's patents.

  • BB TOUR SEVERELY DECREASED BATTERY LIFE AFTER 5.0 OS UPGRADE

I have read several other posts on this subject, but want fresh input here. Since upgrading to the 5.0 OS a couple of months ago I have noticed a big decrease in battery life. It used to last 2 days off a full charge and I do a lot of data, calling, etc. This was not a problem with the 4.7 OS. I got a replacement battery, then bought a spare battery, then got a replacement Tour last week as it is under warranty and Verizon convinced me it was the device itself.
The new Tour came with 5.0 loaded and the battery life is the same. I now am convinced it has to be the 5.0 OS, because we shouldn't have to go through all these power saving strategies that we didn't have to before the upgrade. I like some of the things that you get with the 5.0, but if a battery that doesn't last a full day is the trade off, no thanks.
Anyone know of any other fix, or is it best to downgrade back to 4.7?

I have the same problem.  I have the 8900 and just upgraded to v5.0.0.822 this week.  My battery only last a 1/2 day (from 7 am to 3 pm) when it use to last 2 days before the upgrade.
I have my screen lighting set to 10%.  This helped in the past with battery life.  The only processes running in the background are:

  • 2.1 Decreased Battery Life and Increased Charging Time

Ever since I upgraded to 2.1, my battery life has been decreased significantly. My usage has actually went down since them, but the battery isn't lasting nearly as long. I have to charge it at least once or twice a day, sometimes more during heavy use. On top of that, charging it is taking much longer than it used to. I'm plugging it into my computer and it says it's charging but I've had it in for hours and the battery charge meter has barely moved.

I've experienced the exact opposite. I can fully charge in about an hour and by the end of a work day under normal usage, I still have more than 50% battery. Normal usage to me is reading about 15 emails, reading news for about 20 mins on the web, a few phone calls, searching for new software in the App store, reading reviews of said software, a quick game or two of Enigmo or Cro-mag Rally and listening to tunes in Ipod mode.
Sounds like you have a defective charging cable. As for your battery draining, check to see if WiFi is on, if so, turn it off when you don't need it. Also turn off Blue tooth if you don't need it. I've also read that if you have the Equalizer enabled in Ipod mode that this will add to the drain. Check your brighness settings also, I find that if the brightness slider is set to about 1/3 and autobrightness set, this works well for most situtations. I may need to increase brightness in bright sun light, but thats about it. Do you have the AC adapter for charging? If so, see if this increases your charging times. Computer charging does take longer than the AC adapter but not as long as you described.
    Good luck

  • What is REALLY causing the decreased battery life on my 4S?

Suffice it to say that I've seen all of the related posts.  While I'm glad to see that I'm not alone, none of those posts really seem to help me, so I'm putting my own post out here.
I can't say exactly when the problems began, but they definitely started getting noticed by me AFTER the iOS6 upgrade.  First, my phone just died at 16%, and came back on at 16%.  Even though I calibrate monthly, I figured that it was time for another calibration, which I did after talking to an Apple rep and filing an actual case.  She gave me the obvious party line - nothing wrong, calibrate once a month, close all background apps as much as possible, charge it to 100% then take it off of the charger, try to minimize email push/pull, location services, bluetooth, brightness, etc., etc.  So the problems seemed to go away.
Today I leave the house with the phone at around 98%.  Minimal activity while I am driving but it is trying to pull email occasionally on a rainy day where service is probably spotty.  In any case, 20 minutes into the drive, I'm down to 75%, and by the time I reach my meeting location an hour later, I am under 50%.  Any time that I'm not looking at the phone, it stays put, but even the slightest inquiry into email or using an app, I can literally see the battery level going down.
I decide to hit the Genius Bar at my local Apple store on the way home.  He runs diagnostics on the battery, everything is fine (of course).  He says AT&T, if coverage is spotty or inconsistent, and it keeps trying to pull email and the like on a rainy day, could definitely drain battery down. Makes sense, sort of, but a lot of times I'm on a WiFi connection and it's still draining battery.  Yeah, I know, WiFi uses battery too.  Just getting more and more confused.  And this Genius tells me to keep the phone ON the charger, it's Lithium, it's forgiving, just leave it plugged in.  Now my head hurts.  By the time that I leave said Genius, I am plugged in my car and charging somewhere below 10%.  Home 1 hour and I'm already back up to 76% but that last 10% or so is going to take forever.  Normal, I know.
So as all of this is going on and my battery issues continue, or not, maybe I have no issues here, I can't help but wondering if some or all of this has something to do with the iOS6 upgrade?  I didn't ask the question of the Apple tech on the phone, or the Genius at the bar, not that I probably would have gotten a straight answer like "oh yes, there is a known issue between battery life and the iOS6, just don't talk too loud about it " but I find it more than a coincidence that this just started happening around the same time.  And by the number of posts, I'm not alone.
My question is, is it possible that the iOS6 upgrade is causing this newfound battery drain on my iPhone 4S, and shy of telling me to "reboot", "reset", "close all apps" or "watch my power consumption", what is Apple doing to address this/these issue(s)?

You are def not the only person with this issue.  However, it is NOT because of the update.  It is cause by your usage and how your phone is set up.  I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but they gave us new features that do require more attention.  All power saving setting should be applied as they directed you.  But you can also start by reducing your phones usage, when it "stays put".  Start by closing apps you don't need running in the back ground.  Turn off location services for apps you dont need...  As an example, FB allows you to post a status and include your location...  But how does it know your location...?  cause its ALWAYS checking through out the day as you travel around so that it finds your location quicker by looking at your last known location.  Then you can also start by setting your screen brighness to auto.  Even though its on "auto" you determine the brightness that it should use on auto.  So dim your screen some.  Even a 25% reduction will add an hour or more to your phone.  Turn off notifications you don't need....  Even if you dont look at them, they still light up your screen and suck battery life... You can also set your notifications to alert you once and not twice as its set as a default.  If your using "find my friends" and you have a buddy who is a little too hyped about the app and stalking someones movements, then that location tracking is sucking the life out of your phone...  Just as an example...  Lets say your using it, and your buddy added you.  If you buddy thinks his wife is up to something and hes stalking her movements, every time he goes looking to see what she's doing, he's also checking on you....  Make sense??

  • Decreased Battery Performance when using SL. Apple states I am alone..

This thread is mainly aimed at people that are using a mid 2009 unibody MacBook Pro 13" or upwards that came pre-installed with Leopard. Since upgrading to Snow leopard have you noticed a significant decrease in how long the battery lasts while using the machine in the same fashion?
Am I alone? I first reported this issue to the Dutch customer service team back in October 2009 and since then have fought it all the way to make Apple admit that there is a problem with a minority of customers. To this day according to executive customer relations, I am the only person who has reported this issue to them. I find this hard to believe as there is a mass of information/threads/blogs etc on the internet with many people complaining about the same issue.
The following is an email I sent to the [email protected] email as a last resort.
    Dear Steve,
I am writing to you as a last resort hoping that my complaint will be dealt with professionally as I have actually given up all hope with the Apple customer service. I do not expect that you will personally read this letter but I just trust that someone will care and pass this to someone that will treat my complaint seriously as I really am losing all faith with Apple.
I purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 13" mid 2009 model at the end of June 2009. Around 3 weeks after I purchased the machine I received a message from Apple stating that I was eligible for a copy of Snow Leopard as it was compatible with my machine and because I had just purchased a new Mac. I upgraded the Mac to Snow Leopard without any issues. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I noticed a massive reduction in battery performance. When I ran the machine on Leopard I would easily get the advertised 7 hour battery life while doing basic web browsing with all the battery settings set to the Mac default recommended settings. On Snow Leopard I would not get anything more than 4 hours completing the same tasks.
I contacted Apple about this and was provided with the following reference number XXXXXXXXX I was basically told that I should monitor what I was doing etc and try using the screen on the lowest setting to see if this would improve the performance, it did not. I am a busy man and work in graphic design so unfortunately I put up with the battery issue until my Hard Drive decided to die in April. I contacted Apple again about this and was again provided with a reference number XXXXXXXXXX this time I was asked to do various steps to help fix the machine which did not work. Eventually I had the machine booked in for repair. When the machine was booked in for repair I also stated that I would like the battery issue addressed once and for all as I still only get around 4 hours charge. I was told this would be looked into. After 2 weeks of having no machine (and losing out on work) I received my Mac back with a new Hard drive installed as the old one was corrupted. I asked the Apple employee if my battery had been addressed and it had not. I refused to except my machine back as the battery issue was not resolved. After another 2 weeks of not having my Mac (more loss of work on my account) I received it back this time a new battery and motherboard had been installed.
I returned to my office and reinstalled Snow Leopard, my Adobe Master Collection and charged to 100% I then tested the machine on battery. Again I received no more than 4 hours using BELOW recommended Mac battery settings. I contacted Apple again by telephone (another 0900 number call at my expense) and was messed around left right and centre. The employee on the telephone did not know what to do so transferred me to one of the Mac level 2 agents. I have never been spoken to so rudely and was even told that the only way I could expect 7 hours battery life from a MacBook Pro 2009 model is to use it with the lid closed. Ridiculous hey? I was also even told by one of the previous customer service agents that I could try using the machine with the battery disconnected. Even more ridiculous considering it is a unibody model.
At this point I started doing research on the issue and found that I was far from alone with the battery issue. I have found numerous people suffering from the same issue. Below are a few links containing the same issue.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10337524&#10337524

At this point I decided to try something different, something that was not recommended or mentioned by any Apple employee, sales or technical. I decided to reformat the HD and install Leopard back on the on the machine. I then completed a battery test and low and behold my 7 hours of battery life were fully back. I think this can safely say that the issue is clearly with the OSX and not the hardware.
I then contacted Apple customer service by phone (more 0900 numbers at my expense) I spoke to a senior Applecare advisor called XXXXX XXXXXXXX and explained my issue in full. I told xxxxxxx that I wanted this matter looking into and that I wanted a machine that would give me what is advertised using Snow Leopard, as know where on the Apple site or in the Snow Leopard documentation does it state ' Expect to lose 3 hours '
I provided xxxxxxxx with a system info file and he sent it the Apple engineering team. A week went by and I received an email from him with the report from engineering. Engineering basically blamed it ALL on 3rd party applications, they even blamed it on the weather widget stating that it is constantly updating and will drain power. My remote access software was also blamed which was not even running in the background.
1: The weather widget updates when you select it not constantly.
2: The weather widget is by DEFAULT installed on a machine so thus would be classed as an Apple product in my opinion.
That evening I decided to reformat my HD and reinstall Snow Leopard. This time I installed ONLY Apple software updates and nothing else. I then tested the battery again (getting very boring now) using the same settings as previous tests. This time I managed to have 4 hrs and 15 mins. Just 15 minutes more than what I had previously had. I then contacted xxxxxxx again and provided him with another system information file from the clean install. I explained that I had tested this with just the airport on and basic web browsing on various sites (my exact words) Another week went by and I received a call from xxxxxxx with his report from engineering. He said that Engineering wanted to know if I had tested this with basic web browsing or sat on Youtube or other flash based video streaming sites for 4 hours as this could reduce the battery life.
As you could imagine I was furious. I repeated myself to xxxxxxx about my tests and was told that he would go back to engineering. I received another call from xxxxxxx stating that engineering are looking into it. I asked how long it would take for an answer on this and we agreed on a 2 week time frame. It is now over 2 weeks and I have sent 2 emails to xxxxxx and still have not received a reply.
This issue has been going on since October 2009 when I first reported it. We are now in July 2010 and I am still suffering with this, as you can imaging this is unacceptable and not what one would expect from a company like Apple. My complaints summarized are below, I believe the obvious speak for themselves.
1: There is no disclaimer on the Apple site stating that Snow Leopard will decrease the performance of a battery on a machine that did not come preinstalled with Snow Leopard. Neither is this information provided on the installation PDF instructions that come with the Snow Leopard disc.
2: If there were such a disclaimer on the Apple site then why would I have my battery and motherboard replaced by the Apple repair team when there was clearly nothing wrong with them in the first place. Why was I never told this by any agent on the phone or in the Mac store? The answer seems clearly that this information is not available to the public or to Apple staff which is a big waste or my time as well as theirs.
3: I have missed out on work because of having my Mac in for repair for a total of 4 weeks. As mentioned above there was clearly no need to have had the battery or motherboard replaced.
4: I have spent money calling the 0900 numbers on numerous occasions simply getting passed around from Apple employee to Apple employee and still have no answer to my problem.
5: I have wasted so much of my own time clean erasing my hard drive including zero out of sectors and reinstalling operating systems, not to mention other software and Apple updates. All of this comes to many hours of total wasted time at my expense when I could have been working.
Where we stand now is that I am on the verge of taking legal proceedings with the Dutch Consumentenbond as this machine is not suitable to run with the Snow Leopard OSX when Apple advertise that it is.
I expect either a full refund of my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2009 or an exchange for a Macbook Pro 13" that comes with Snow Leopard preinstalled with the disc in the box. I also expect to be compensated for my loss of time, money I have spent on the phone to Apple and the loss of work while the machine was in for unnecessary repair.
I am really at the end of my patience with this issue and feel that I have been much more than fair with my reports, honesty and patience.
I trust to hear from somebody soon regarding this issue so that we can finally put it to a close once and for all in a professional manor.
    Regards
I received a phone call within 14 hours of sending the email from executive customer relations. They came back with new information from engineering but did not think it was acceptable as engineering were now blaming my battery decrease on the assumption that my apartment might be too hot this causing the CPU to run at a higher temperature making the battery decrease quicker. We both agreed that it was an unacceptable answer.
The day after I received another call from them stating that engineering had now finished tests and came to the conclusion that when testing on Leopard and Snow Leopard on the MacBook Pro 2009 there was no difference in battery run time whats so ever. I found this hard to believe so asked exactly how the test was conducted. Was it conducted in the same fashion that I had spent the last 9 months talking about. ' Using below default energy saving settings with only airport on while completing basic web browsing '???
They confirmed this was not the case, engineering had basically turned the machines on, turned the screen right down to 1 bar and left them on screen saver over night. As you can imaging I was speechless (for a few seconds)
Apple seem consistent on NOT admitting that there is an issue with battery performance for a minority of customers. As is stands now engineering in Europe have now passed the case over to engineering in the US for further ' in-depth ' tests.
I know there are people out there that are suffering the same issues as myself and I welcome you to please contact me with your experiences. As the more of us that complain about this make it harder for Apple to deny this and brush it under the carpet.
Please feel free to reply to this thread or email me directly on [email protected]

Please, nobody's going to waste their time reading all that! I don't know what you possibly could have said about this issue that took up so much space, but if you can't express it more concisely, it's probably not worth reading.
I have used SL on both a unibody MBP and an older MBP. On the older MBP, when I upgraded from Leopard to SL, I got a noticeable increase in battery life immediately. I have no such comparison on the unibody MBP, since it had SL installed to begin with, but I'll put it this way: I haven't come close to running out of power on it. I used it once for about 4 hours and still had more than a 1/3 charge. I could have easily used it for another couple hours, at least. And this was with a 17" MBP, which uses more power than your 13", and without much in the way of battery-saving going on. (Screen at full brightness, AirPort on and in use, Bluetooth on, etc.)
It's difficult to say that SL is the problem when it clearly isn't for everyone. What your problem is, I don't know, but maybe if you posted a more concise question you'd get some answers.
    I think ..
This thread is mainly aimed at people that are using a mid 2009 unibody MacBook Pro 13" or upwards that came pre-installed with Leopard.....
at the beginning of the thread I made it pretty clear, if you are not affected by this then I'm happy for you, but then the thread is clearly not aimed at you. I can guarantee that I have tested this exactly the same way I did with Leopard and there is a significant decrease. I also know there are people out there that have gained battery life but there have also been many threads containing people who have lost battery life.

  • Does using bluetooth headphones dramatically decrease battery life in ipod 5

I have a 64gb version of the Itouch 5 and recently started using jaybird brand bluetooth headphhones. At first everything worked fine but now the battery inthe Ipod only lasts 4 hours even when niot using it.  Has there been any known issues with this?

Yes, and no. The headphones aren't sucking the battery out of your 5th Generation iTouch. USING BLUETOOTH, will. Its like running a game on your iPod for a while. It will drain the battery more quickly than with just listening to music. So running apps, bluetooth, etc, WILL shorten your battery life.
    HOW TO FIX IT:
When you are not using the headphones, turn the bluetooth off through the general settings in your itouch. Then, while you aren't running the headphones, it won't suck the battery life out. When you use the headphones, turn bluetooth back on. Leaving bluetooth on is still leaving the iPod in bluetooth mode, which is running down the battery because it takes extra charge to run bluetooth. Hope this helps!

  • 10.4.4 and/or Battery Updater decreases battery life???

This is a cry to the community.
I just returned from the Apple Store where the Genius was unable to provide me with any assistance. The best advice he had was to engender community support for Apple to issue a software fix for my problem. This is my problem:
    I have a 15" aluminum Powerbook, non-high resolution, purchased May, 2005.
A few days ago I installed the 10.4.4 and the Battery Updater software updates, from the Software Updater. I immediately noticed that the hard disk stopped spinning down during periods of inactivity.
Later that night, when I unplugged the power adapter, I was surprised to see that the battery life was now only about 1:20, down from about 3:00 before installing the updates.
Turns out that the Battery Update was only intended for the new battery design shipping with the 15" HR model. There appears to be no way to revert to the previous firmware.
Is anyone else having a similar problem?
    Thanks, Mark

    Hi, Carla--
Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your battery. I try to explain what the numbers mean, but I also think that with a brand-new PowerBook, you have a pretty good case to make to Apple that they owe you better battery run-time. The 3-month rule might be an issue if you didn't purchase AppleCare.
The first number that's relevent is "Capacidad de plena carga (mAh)". Hope English is okay with you. This is a technical measure of how much charge your battery can hold, like the number of gallons of gas that a car's fuel tank can hold. This capacity will decline over time because batteries wear out and hold less total charge as they wear out. "mAh" means milliAmp Hours--milli just means 1/1000. Amp is a measure of current, like a 12 Amp vacuum cleaner. If you run a vacuum for an hour, it uses 12 Amp-Hours of electricity. Your battery hold 4249 milli-Amp-Hours--or 4.249 Amp-Hours--of charge when it's fully charged.
The second number, "Capacidad restante", is the remaining charge that is left. Like when a car's gas tank is 3/4 full. Your's shows 3437 mAh, which is about 3/4 of the full charge. Remember, the full charge is the Capacidad de plena carga.
The third number, "Amperaje", is the amount of electricity that is going in or out of the battery. A negative number means electricity is flowing out--i.e., the laptop is running off of the battery. If it keeps using up the charge at the same rate for an hour, it will have used up that many milliAmp-Hours.
So, your laptop is running off of the battery and using 2898 mAh per hour. About 3000. Now look at the Capacidad de plena carga, again. The maximum charge is about 4200 mAh. Just divide the usage into the capacity, and you'll see that your battery will last about 4200/3000=1.4 hours. And, that's exactly what you said.
Sorry for such a detailed (and boring) post.
But, now the problem is obvious. The software update that we downloaded and installed didn't change the battery capacity. It made the computer use a lot more electricity. For instance, my Powerbook went from using about 1200 mA to about 3500 mA every hour. In other words, since my battery only holds 3800mAh, I go through the full charge in about 3800/3500=1.1 hours.
And, yes, that's exactly what happens.
Thanks, everyone. I'm going to call AppleCare back tomorrow and be a bit more insistent that they address this issue.

  • New MBP 2.6Ghz, can not keep battery life when shut down

    Hi
Just got my MBP 2.6Ghz, 2Gb Ram yesterday (waited more than 4 weeks on it), and already i got a problem..
After getting the MBP, i charged the battery to 100% (magsafe was green, and OS X said 100%), i had to shut down for the night (removed the power, and packed the mbp in my second skin), after 7 hours i turnd on my MBP and the battery life is now 86%, i recharde the battery to 100% and shut it down again and went to work.. after 10 hours work i turn on my MBP and the battery life i now 70%..
Why i my new MBP loosing battery when it i shut down (it is not on sleep, but shut down from the finder menu)
already checked my firmware and battery version:
    Battery: v 1.3
    Bootrom: v. MBP31.0070.B05
    SMC: v. 1.16f10
all updates from the software update is installed

I think you did the process wrong. Try follow this:
    1) Plug in the power adapter and fully charge your PowerBook's battery until the light ring or LED on the power adapter plug changes to green and the onscreen meter in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.
    2) Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for at least two hours. You may use your computer during this time as long as the adapter is plugged in.
    3) Disconnect the power adapter with the computer still on and start running the computer off battery power. You may use your computer during this time. When your battery gets low, you will see the low battery warning dialog on the screen.
    4) Continue to keep your computer on until it goes to sleep. Save all your work and close all applications when the battery gets very low, before the computer goes to sleep.
    5) Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.
    6) Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again
