Dedicated network for AlwaysON replication traffic when a replica is a Failover Cluster Instance

Hi,
We are planning to setup dedicated network for our Availability Group replication traffic. We have a Failover Cluster Instance as the primary replica and a standalone SQL server instance as the secondary.
I understand that we will need to manually configure the database mirroring endpoints on both the replicas to listen on the specific IP.
But how do I configure the database mirroring endpoint on the Failover Cluster Instance ?
Please help.
Thanks and Regards,
Jisha

If you have a dedicated network for your Availability Group replication traffic between the FCI and the standalone instance, you need to identify if there will be other network services included in the mix. For example, your public network is already using
it's own DNS server by virtue of Active Directory integration. Your dedicated network for replication traffic may or may not have its own DNS server so configuring the endpoints would involve using either IP addresses like the one highlighted in the
blog post or using hosts file with fully qualified domain names so you can use them when creating the endpoints

    Hi,
As far as I know there don’t have the log replica function between failover cluster node, if you want to have the Unified log management you can refer the following related

  • Exploring AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances in SQL Server 2014 Tecnet Labs

I like the Labs and have found them very usful. I have a problem with: Exploring AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances in SQL Server 2014. The lab starts but hangs on opening SQLONE and the Manual never loads. I have tried coming out and starting again but
get returned to the same failing session. I thought I would mention it here as the is no way to feedback a response as the appraisal only happens once the lab is completed, i.e. no apparent link on the lab site. The session ends when the HOL is reported
    as not responding.

  • Transactional replication from a failover cluster instance to a SQL Server Express DB

    Hello,
I have been poking around on Google trying to understand if there are any gotchas in configuring transactional replication on a instance DB of a failover cluster, to a SQL Server Express DB. Also, this client would like to replicate a set of tables between
two instances DB's which both reside on nodes of the cluster.
Everything I've read suggests there is no problem using transactional replication on clustered instance as long as you use a shared snapshot folder. I still have some concerns:
    1) Should the distributor need to live on a separate instance?
    2) What happens in the event of an automatic, or manual failover of a publisher, especially if the distributor does not need to live on a separate instance? I know that when a failover occurs, all jobs in progress are stopped and this seems like a recipe for
inconsistency between the publisher and subscriber.
There is a paramount concern, that this particular client won't have staff on hand to troubleshoot replication if there are problems, hence my hesitancy to implement a solution that relies on it.
    Thanks in advance.

    1) Should the distributor need to live on a separate instance?
Answer: It is recommended to configure the distributor on the different server, but it also be configured on Publisher/subscriber server. (Subscriber in our case is not possible as its a Express edition)
Answer: If you configure both publisher and distributor on the same server and the SQL instance is failed over, the data synchronization/replication is suspended till the instance comes online.
Once the instance is up,all the replication jobs will start again and it will continue to synchronize the data to subscriber. No manual intervention is required.

  • Very Strange Network Issue With Two Guests on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Cluster

Hi all.  We're having a odd issue with two guests on our 2012 R2 failover cluster.
In a nutshell, if we shutdown a particular server (I'll call it Server A) another totally different server (Server B) on the same node loses it's network connectivity to the domain. If we start server A back up, network connectivity returns on server B.
At first I thought server A might be running a service that was somehow linked to server B, so I decided to disable server A's NIC.  Interestingly, that had no affect on server B's connectivity.
The next step I tried was pausing server A and again, no adverse affect on server B's connectivity.
Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action did
cause server B to lose its network connection.
One other clue is that if I ping server B from either of the Hyper-V hosts in the cluster, I never lose network connection to server B.
So I would suspect this is some network issue on the cluster, but I'm kind of at a loss where to go from here.
Has anyone seen this behavior before or does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions I can try?
    Thanks!
    George Moore

    Hi Sir,
I'v never seen this before .
    >>Next step was to live migrate server A to another node.  This action did
cause server B to lose its network connection.
They are connecting to same virtual switch ?
First please run cluster validation to check if there is any error .
If it is ok , please try the following items for troubleshooting :
    1. shutdown  serverA   serverB
    2. then add another virtual NIC for serverB
    3. start server B  check if the issue happens to both "old" and "new" virtual NIC .
In addition , you can live migrate both A and B to another node , then try to live migrate A to the original node .
If the issue persists , I would suggest you to remove that virtual switch on both nodes then re-create them .
    Best Regards,
    Elton Ji

  • 0x0000007a Error for VMS inside a Hyper-V server in a failover cluster

    Hi All,
This is my first time posting a question on this forum. Will provide more details if necessary.
Would appreciate any help for the below problem:
We have two servers operating on Win 2012 R2 datacenter. However one of them(host2) had all it's VMs crash with error code 0x0000007a. While the OS of the host itself was ok in a sense, trying to run any application or opening windows explorer would result
in a hang, We can still use ctrl+alt+delete to log off.
Both servers have been installed with similar windows update patches, and all the configurations are the same. However Host01 is running fine.
Booting on safe mode let's us run the server fine. Did a chkdsk /r and it found some errors on the disk, I did a restart to let it try and fix the issue but issues are still the same.
Dell hardware check came up with nothing.
    Thank you!
    Anton

    Hi
Can you check if there are any hardware errors logged in event viewer?
Perhaps you have a faulty memory module. I had a similar issue with my host and it ended up being a combination of reseating the ram and replacing the Quad network adapter.
Are both you dells on the latest SUU?
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • DPM Dedicated Networking

    Hello,
Dose anybody else use a dedicated network for there DPM back up traffic?
I only ask as yesterday we had a Hyper-V environment failure due to (copyied from even viewer) "
Failed to allocate VMQ for NIC +
Maximum number of VMQs supported on the Protocol NIC is exceeded. Status = Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API."
It would appear that the Virtual "Production Switch" was over loaded and caused bad times!!!
Would adding a new Virtual switch (obviously with a separate physical network card in each node) dedicated to backups resolve the problem?
If you have done this could you give me a heads up on how you achieved it :)

    Hi,
i am using dedicated Network for DPM, but your Error is from a different Soruce.
you activated VMQ on to many VM's or Nics in your Cluster

  • Using Bride Mode to have private network to ethernet and wifi but also use Guest Network for public?

    Hello,
I am trying to use my new Apple AIrport Extreme in Bridge mode to have our private wireless network. (This works great) and a guest network for the public. When I create the guest network and update settings and then attempt to connect to the guest network wifi it says no internet. :-(

Apple assumes that you will be connecting the AirPort Extreme to a simple modem......not a modem/router.
The correct Router Mode setting with a simple modem is DHCP and NAT....allowing the Guest Network function to work correctly.
When you have a modem/router "upstream" from the AirPort Extreme, the correct Router Mode setting is Bridge Mode for the AirPort Extreme to avoid having two devices both trying to act as routers on the same network.
You might be able to get away with having two devices both configured to act as routers on the same network....but at best, there will be negative consequencs. At worst, the AirPort Exteme may not function at all if you try to configure it incorrectly.

  • Service Accounts for Reporting Service in SQL Server Failover Cluster setup

I am setting up 2 Report Services (SSRS) in SQL Failover Clustering (Version: 2012SP1) on Windows 2012, as part of scale out architecture.
There are 2 options to configure the service account for SSRS:
Option 1) Using domain accounts, as what I have done for DB Engine and SQL Agent.
Option 2) accept the default, which is virtual account for SSRS. Per documentation URL:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504.aspx
which is the recommended one? is it option 2?
There is security note on above URL as well, but does not clearly mention that option 1 is not recommended.
Security Note:  Always run SQL Server services by using the lowest possible user rights. Use a MSA or  virtual account when possible. When MSA and virtual accounts are not possible, use a specific low-privilege user account or domain account instead
of a shared account for SQL Server services. Use separate accounts for different SQL Server services. Do not grant additional permissions to the SQL Server service account or the service groups. Permissions will be granted through group membership or granted
directly to a service SID, where a service SID is supported.
Thanks very much for your help!

    Hi Luo Donghua,
In SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance, personally two options can run well. If you use the virtual account for SQL Server Reporting Service. Virtual accounts in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 are managed local accounts that provide the features to
simplify service administration. The virtual account is auto-managed, and the virtual account can access the network in a domain environment.
Of cause, you can also use domain accounts in your clustering.
Just make sure your service account is set up here, or that it is using a proper built-in account. For more information, see:http://ermahblerg.com/2012/11/08/cluster-ssrs-in-2008/

  • DPM 2012 R2 CU4 protecting SQL 2014 AlwaysOn AG with Failover Cluster vs. DR location

    Hello!
We have a problem protecting any Database of SQL 2014 AlwaysOn Availability Group with SQL Failover Cluster Instance when moved to DR location. Everything is protected using DPM 2012 R2 CU4 from Primary location.
    FACTS
    - all servers are Windows Server 2012 R2
    - all servers are Virtual (except Hyper-V hosts obviously:)
    - that means virtualization is based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V
    - all clusters (SQL, Exchange,...) are Guest Clusters on Hyper-V
    - SQL 2014
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - Primary and DR location
    SETUP
    SQL
    - Primary location: SQL 2014 Guest Cluster with SQL Failover Cluster Instance using Shared VHDX disks
    - DR location: SQL 2014 Standalone using VHDX disks
    - AlwaysOn Availability Group expands between the primary and DR location.
    DPM
    - Primary location: DPM 2012 R2 CU4
    - DPM 2012 R2 CU4 Agents installed on every possible SQL 2014 Server.
    SCENARIO
    - DPM is backing up all the SQL Databases normally as long as they exist on any SQL Cluster Node on Primary location.
    - As soon as any Database is moved to DR location, that Database is not backed up anymore with the following error.
    DPM ERROR
    Starting synchronization on SqlServerName\DatabaseName failed:
Error 104: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running.
Error details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)
    Recommended action: Retry the operation.
    TROUBLESHOOTING
    - Tried to modify SQL Protection Group in DPM Server while Database was active on DR location
    > error enumerating volumes or drives D:\, E:\, F:\ (I don't have exact error atm)
    > this looks like DPM is not aware that DPM is active on DR location to me
    - Checked Technet, blogs and forums; no useful information
    QUESTION
Is this expected or by-design behavior? Is this a bug? I am aware there were quite some issues backing up AG's from DPM 2012 SP1 ans SQL 2012 on.
Does anybody have a lab of that kind to try it out?
    Thank you!

    Damjan Grimšič

OK. The issue has been resolved. Issue was related to possible Disks Owners in Failover Cluster Manager Console for SQL Cluster.
In Primary's site SQL Cluster Failover Manager Console / Storage / Disks.
SQL Server(s) from Secondary location need(s) to be unchecked as Possible owner(s) in Advanced Policies for all relevant Volumes.

  • Event Trace Session missing for Failover Cluster

I have a failover cluster setup and is managed via a Windows Domain controller for the failover cluster network.  I am troubleshooting a potential issue with the failover cluster and the recommendation is to go into event viewer, app & service
logs, Microsoft, windows and look for failover cluster diagnostics and operations logs and these do not exist.
It appears they are created by having an event trace session associated with windows failover clustering but apparently it was't created when the cluster was created for some reason.  I am wondering how to create the proper event trace session
in order to get these additional failover cluster logs created?

  • Can I assign several physical storage locations for each virtual machine when using the replication-feature from Hyper-V 2012 R2?

    Hi everyone,
I have 2x physical servers running Hyper-V 2012 R2. Each hosts several virtual machines. The VHDs of the VMs are stored on several dedicated physical disks to have a performance boost. For exampe if VM A has two VHDs attached I made sure that the VHDs are
on different physical disks to have them not slow-down each other in case of intensive disk accesses.
So far so good. I was looking forward to the replication-feature. The idea is to have the two physical servers have their primary running VMs being replicated to the other physical server and vice-versa. I was hoping to have the chance to choose for each
individual VM where the replicated VHD will be stored. But instead I can only see the one location/path which is configured in Hyper-V Manager when I activate the replication-feature on the server.
Is there by any chance a way how to select the storage location for each VHD/VM if using the replication-feature of Hyper-V 2012 R2?
    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Sebastian

Secondly, you could replicate different VMs to different storage locations to perform some of the disk balancing you are trying to perform.  Lastly, you could copy the vhd file to a different location
    before starting the VM.

    Hi Tim,
thanks for the reply. Sorry, but I had some other tasks to take care of, so I wasn't paying enough attention to this thread.
The part I quoted from your reply sounds exactly like the action I'd like to perform, but as you pointed out before this should not be possible.
How can I perform the action (replicating each VM to a storage location) as you mentioned secondly? To sum it up again:
2x physical machines carrying severel HDDs
8+ VMs spread to run on the 2x servers
when setting up replication I can only set the storage-location from server A on B and vice versa B on A
    Thanks again for your reply.
    Cheers,
    Sebastian
