Dedicated servers

Hi guys,
I know this isn't really a Java specific question but it does relate to my Java projects.
I have written a game server in order to make my chess game multi-player and I have been looking for hosting solutions. I need full access to the server so that I can start and stop my game server. All I can find is companies offering hosting for between $60 and $500 a month. $60 is to much to spend for a personal project (well, until I get a player base). My question is, does anyone know of any cheap hosting solutions. (i thought writing the game was the hard bit!!!!)
Any ideas or input would be great.
Many thanks,
Alex

ahhh, more problems. I live in a remote area ofthe
uk and can only get a 512k connection (which isn't
very reliable).
Do you know of any hosting companies which provide
the service I want on a shared server?
Not off the top of my head no. And honestly I can't
imagine that you will have much luck finding one. I
mean I wouldn't let you do this on my server.
But who knows... search through hosting companies and
see what they offer. But even if you find one $60 still seems VERY low to me.

  • Azure cloud services vs Dedicated servers

I have been searching for an article about advantages/disadvantages about using cloud services (Azure in this case) or a dedicated server but have not found anything concrete. What I see is that there are dedicated servers with much more capacity (8MB RAM,
2 x 2 TB HD´s, 4-core CPU, for example) than Azure VM´s at a much lower price and at the same time I see that there is an increase in cloud services usage. What other aspects should I consider besides price to decide to move to the cloud (Azure VM´s in this
case) instead of a dedicated server?
    Best regards, JORGE MALDONADO

    Hi,
In Azure, you can create multiple VMs in a cloud service and the VMs in the same cloud service share the same public IP address. If you want to access
the VM from external, you need to create endpoints and open the related ports in firewall. You can also manage incoming traffic to the public port by configuring rules for the network access control list (ACL) of the endpoint to ensure
    safety.
Azure charges an horly price that is based on the VM's size and OS, and the prices include Windows Server licensing fee. If you don't want to use
a VM, you can shut it down to the stopped (deallocated) status and you won't be charged for it.
In addition, you can resizing the VM to a larger/smaller one as your need. (Note: the data on the temporary driver would be lost after resizing)
Furthermore, for Cloud Services, when you deploy two or more role instances in different fault and upgrade domains, your Internet facing roles will
have external connectivity at least 99.95% of the time. For all Internet facing Virtual Machines that have two or more instances deployed in the same Availability Set, you will have external connectivity at least 99.95% of the time.

  • Can we Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hypervisor on dedicated servers?

    Hello, guys!
We have our infra on rented dedicated servers at Canadian services provider.
We used to rent and pay their MS licenses (Win2008R2 Ent) on these servers.
Now we want to use  Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hypervisor on our dedicated servers, because of the smaller footprint, less attck surface, less updates needed to install and no cost.
We installed 5 hosts with Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hypervisor and now we want to move the rest to it. But their engineer states that "
Unfortunately, if you are going to use Microsoft Server on those servers, I'll have to add the licence as we have an SPLA agreement with Microsoft.
Can you please help to clarify if we're allowed to use this hypervisor or not?

    Hi Friends,
I am using Oracle 10g server release 2,Today i have gone through the Orcale docs, its written there that
"Oracle does not recommend using the SORT_AREA_SIZE parameter unless the instance is configured with the shared server option. Oracle recommends that you enable automatic sizing of SQL working areas by setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET instead. SORT_AREA_SIZE is retained for backward compatibility"

  • 1Z0-042: Exam topics: Shared / dedicated servers

    Hi all
Not sure if you answer this type of specific question here, but what the h3ll....
The exam topics document states that you should be able to identify when to / when not to use shared servers. However the Sybex book goes into plenty of detail on the subject (inclduing a good one in the sample questions), and Oracle Press book has a much 'lighter' view of the subject.
With this in mind, it looks like the Exam only covers one tiny aspect of the subject (a good thing from my point of view!). Am I correct, or should I be sure I know the minutae of the CIRCUITS, SHARED_SERVER_SESSIONS parameters & DISPATCHER_RATE views etc.

btThe authorative point for exam topics for 1z0-042 is:
This was updated to reflected 10gR2 topics in november 2006. (The topics could even have been changed since, but i dont think so).
Methinks your books predate that. They could even have been prepared while the exam was in Beta.
In general IMHO the Sybex book is sometimes a little over the top in these things compared to the Oracle Press, but its all good stuff anyway and useful to know.

  • Shared server or dedicated servers

What's the defaul configuration? How i can check either i am running shared or dedicated server mode?
Which is common preference in different companies?

    - The default is dedicated server.
    - You can enable shared server connections as well, in which case you would (potentially) have both types of connections simultaneously. You cannot have a database that supports only shared server connections
    - You can see if you have any shared server connections by selecting the SERVER column from V$SESSION
    - In general, if you have to ask the question, use dedicated server. You would enable shared server only when you had a good reason to do so.

  • Streaming live video? Dedicated Servers?

Hello, thanks for looking into my post.
I'm a DJ / beginning developer who wants to know if it's posable to stream a realtime live video feed to a dedicated server, and stream the feed in realtime into a flex app. air of flash player.  I want to develop a radio/video show.
I know in order to stream a realtime live feed a dedicated server is often used.
All the information I seem to find requires Flash Media Server. Is this my only option?
    Thanks for any help.
    -J

    Hi,
Since the iPhone browser can play MPEG-4 movies, it should be able to play streamed MPEG-4. Flash and Windows Media isn't an option.
Fortunately QuickTime Broadcaster is free, but you'd need a QuickTime Streaming Server to "bounce" the stream off. Setup Broadcaster to do an MPEG-4 video that's within the playable specs (given that it's a live stream, you'd want something as small as possible, so I'm sure the iPhone could handle it). If you're wanting your clients to access the stream over 3G as well as WiFi then you'd need to keep that in mind when determining the video size/bandwidth.

  • How to access a Network Share between two servers in same data centre

I have two dedicated servers (both Windows 2012 Server) hosted in a data centre somewhere.   I want to share a folder on one server with the other server, but it's obviously not as straight forward as one might think.  My servers are called "Maximus"
    and "Apprentice".
On Maximus I shared a folder by right clicking on it and choosing "Share with... / Specific People", I then typed in the name of a local user account which also exists on Apprentice with the same name and password.  (so each server has a local
user account with the same name and password).
So then on Apprentice, I was hoping I could access the share (while being logged in as this user with whom the folder was shared) by simply typing  "\\ipaddress\sharename" into the address bar in file explorer.  Unfortunately it comes
back with "Windows can not access [ip address]".
Now, I do have a website setup on the IP address for Maximus.  This is actually the reason I want to create this share.  I need the second server for load balancing and need to share IIS config as well as the website itself.  (So I will need
two shares eventually, but for now I'm just trying to get one to work).  I don't know if the fact that the ip address is pointing to the website is causing me problems here or if it's something else.
Are there any network gurus out there who can tell me what the issue is and how to resolve it?

I can ping both servers in either direction, but I believe I may have found the problem.  Apparently my host is blocking port 445 which Windows wants to use to connect to the share and they will not unblock it.
Is there a way to connect to the share through a different port?
To my knowledge, you cannot change the port. However, you can try disabling your security software for testing. If this fixes the problem then you need to adjust your security software configuration so that traffic on this port is not blocked or filtered.

  • MTS - Shared servers die when stressed...

RedHat 6.2, Oracle 8.1.5, Running MTS
MTS is up and running, but when I start to stress the box, the background processes and the shared servers just die. This doesn't happen with dedicated servers, only with shared servers. When it happens, it happens fast...boom their dead! I am low on memory, but I have plenty of swap space. I heard there was a problem with MTS on Linux...anyone know the details?
    Thanks,
    Craig.

    Craig,
I am using MTS, RH 6.2, and 8.1.6.
After stress testing with my max number of connections for a prolonged period my servers
    die. Instance crash.
My test includes connections from a web and telephony server. I'm not totally convinced its a sole MTS issue. My only common denominator in testing is java, so I'm looking further here.
8.1.7 is due for release soon.
What type connections are you making (e.g any web servers ?)

  • Shared vs dedicated server

Any reason to select one over the other?
The reason I'm asking is because two texts that I have which were not written by Oracle suggest using dedicated server processes, while all of the Oracle-written texts suggest shared (although I did finally find a note which mentions "NOTE:...if your machine has plenty of memory to support dedicated servers, you should use that approach. In this situation, performance is likely to be better.")
    -cf

Actually it depends upon the requirement.
Shared and dedicated server environment are meant for different purposes and requirements.
If server process is ideal for long time than same server process can be used to server other clients. Eg. On a web site user searched for Oracle Tuning books and now he is taking time to go through the title, contents, price. Your Server process is ideal during this time where as it can used to server other clients.
Similarly if I use dedicated server process for batch processing it will be more effective than shared server because there is no ideal time.
It is not true shared server requires more resources or dedicated server requires more memory. It will depend upon the proper utilization of resources. With the same given resources dedicated server environment may work more efficiently for one scenario and in the another scenario with the same resources a shared server works very well.

  • "Dispatchers" parameter in dedicated mode

    Hello,
I've noticed that the "dispatchers"' parameter in dedicated mode looks like this (on 10.2.0.1.0 db) :
    dispatchers=(PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=sidXDB)
What is the SERVICE parameter for, and why is it set to this default value in dedicated mode ?
Is the SERVICE parameter always set for dedicated servers only ?
Otherwise, how can I recognize dedicated and shared mode when I look at the insatnce parameters ?
    thank you
    Regards,
    Antoine

Actually you can configure a instance to use dedicated server mode and shared server >mode at the same time: it's up to the client to connect using the right configured service >that will make the right mapping. You are right Pierre.
But I've tried to configure several instances with DBCA wizard, both in dedicated and shared mode :
    - when dedicated mode is selected, dispatchers parameter is set like this : "dispatchers=(PROTOCOL=TCP) (SERVICE=sidXDB)", and all connections at the instance will be in by default dedicated mode, even if the "shared_servers" parameters is greater than 0
    - when shared mode is selected, dispatchers parameter is set like this : "dispatchers=(PROTOCOL=TCP)"
I thought that the instance would run automatically in shared mode if the "shared_servers" parameters is greater than 0, but that's untrue
Besides, I don't understand the link between the "(SERVICE=sidXDB)" option, which seems to be related to the XML database, and the connection mode to the instance.
This is quiet confusing to me, there is obviously something I don't know or I don't understand

  • Dedicated or Shared Sessions?

I have a 10g SE1 + ASM running in Windows 2003 ES with 4GB RAM with /3GB switch and 7TB JBOD storage. Our custom data mining applications access this database from a grid of 15 servers. Application architecture uses a mixture of hibernate, roll-your-own connection pooling in Java, and daemons with dedicated sessions. In all, we typically have 200 sessions but only 3 to 9 are active at any given moment. Individual queries and transactions range from sub-second to 3 hours in duration.
I’ve run the system with MTS and in dedicated server mode; it runs either way. I have never tried tweaking multiple shared_servers, dispatchers or circuits.
Right now it seems to run fine with 200 dedicated sessions, but it does gobble up a lot of unused PGA memory for the inactive sessions.
In our situation, what is the best configuration, MTS, or shared, or dedicated, and why?

Mark, I think that physically a shared server process is no different than a dedicated server process in Oracle on Windows - both are threads in the oracle.exe process image.
The only real difference is that one deals directly with the client, and the other with a virtual circuit.
This then raises the question about the PGA and UGA. As the thread runs in the oracle.exe space, it has direct access to, and uses, the data segment (DS) of oracle. The PGA is likely a dynamic memory allocation - so too the UGA for a dedicated thread, while a shared thread will use the SGA instead (for the UGA).
Now assuming that my speculation is not far of, there are very little overheads between dedicated and shared server threads on Oracle in Windows - except for the dedicated servers being more and thus more PGAs given the nature of these threads versus shared server threads.
This is unlike Unix where there is a large physical difference as each process (dedicated or shared) has data segment and code segment. The resource footprint for a process is a lot bigger.
A concern of mine... Windows is excellent at running threads.. it really strains running lots of physical processes (unlike Unix/Linux). But as threads share the same code and data segments, a single thread running into a severe bug can potentially corrupt the entire physical process image, crashing all other threads in it. At least, this has been my experience doing Windows server development.
Would be nice to read a technical paper on just how Oracle implements their shared and dedicated server models on the Win32 API.

  • IFS uses Oracle DEDICATED server instead of SHARED

    Hi all,
    Context:
    OS = HPUX 11.00 64 bits
    Oracle 8.1.7.0
    iFS 1.1.9
I have configured my Oracle DB server to use MTS (Multi Threaded
Server) mode, using the "mts_dispatcher" parameters suite in
    the 'init.ora' file.
I have also re-configured the listener to force SHARED server
mode, using the "netasst" graphical tool.
From that point, after restarting the DB server and the
listener, my standard Oracle client (SQL worksheet) are
connecting to the base using a dispatcher and a SHARED server,
as I can see from the v$session view.
However, when I start iFS (./ifsstart), all agents and protocol
servers are still using several DEDICATED servers...instead of
    SHARED server mode.
How can I change this behaviour ?
Did I miss something in the DB server configuration, or in iFS
    configuration ?
This point is very critical to us since we are experiencing
problems when too many iFS connections occur at the same time,
when reaching a ceil of oracle processes, the kernel refuses to
spawn new ones...causing new iFS connections to fail.
Thanks in advance for any information.
    Regards,
    Arnaud Chiaberge

Note that we don't certify the JDBC thin driver, only the JDBC
    OCI driver.
I don't know enough about how MTS works to be able to fully
answer your question about why the processes come up in
    DEDICATED mode.
However, I'm more concerned about the issue where you say that
too many Oracle shadow processes are being created and the
kernel is refusing to do so.
Note that you can adjust the maximum number of iFS processes
that can be created using the Target and Maximum Readonly and
Writeable connection pool settings. Also, you can adjust the
time that iFS will wait before trying to spawn a new connection,
once the Target setting has been reached.
If your problem is more challenging than that, please open a
Technical Assistance Request with Oracle Worldwide Support, and
give us more details, so we can see how we can help.
