Deep Freeze Mac 2.0

I just read a short review in MacWorld about a utility by the name of Deep Freeze Mac 2.0. made by Faronics Technologies (www.faronics.com). This is a utility that automatically resets a Mac to prestine condition after a restart saving administrators hours of cleaning and troubleshooting.
Since this almost sounds too good to be true, I was wondering if anyone here has tried this program and would be willing to offer any comments, good or bad.
Thanks,
Barbara

Hi, Barbara.
You wrote: "I'm already protecting my harddrive with a good utility, SuperDuper."To be accurate, you're not protecting your hard drive with SuperDuper or any other backup and recovery utility.
What you are doing is significantly reducing the probability that you will lose your priceless data should your Mac's hard drive fail by regularly backing up your Mac's hard drive to another drive. You're protecting your investment in your data.
Even with a backup and recovery scheme in place, if your Mac's hard drive fails, you will lose new or changed data since the last backup was made. Hence why it is important to backup your data regularly, such as daily.
If you really want to ensure against data loss, you should also archive critical data to media like DVDs and store those off-site, such as in a safe deposit box. A fire, for example, could destroy your Mac and your backup drive. Or you could use a pair of FireWire drives for backup and regularly rotate them through a safe deposit box, always keeping a recent backup off-site.
For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
Good luck!

  • ARD & Deep Freeze Mac

does anyone know how to use ARD to thaw(Deep Freeze) computers using unix commands. I have tried to set up maintenance in Deep Freeze but it doesn't work.
    Thanks

I use the Deep Freeze tasks regularly through ARD to thaw and freeze entire labs with no problems. One thing to keep in mind is the default tasks that they install will perform the action and just that. You have to send a second command to actually reboot the computer, if I recall correctly.
I say that because I ended up re-writing all of the task scripts and tacked on a /sbin/reboot onto the end just to save myself 5 seconds.
Oh, and if you put single quotes (') around your Deep Freeze admin password in the task script, you can use punctuation marks in the password despite what their silly documentation says.

  • ARD 3 and Faronics Deep Freeze questions

    Hello everyone
I am interning at an IT department of a branch campus of a large university. Among other new exciting things I was recently given the responsibility to administer the 5 campus macs that are connected to the network as actual works machines (there are others but those are chat only machines and aren't connected to the same subnet but rather on wireless). 1 of them is a faculty members and is easy enough to figure out, the other 4 are in labs and have the Faronics software Deep Freeze installed on them. I have the deep freeze assistant installed for ARD (so i have all the UNIX commands) and the PDF manual from Faronics but am still unable to unfreeze computers across the network to run updates. I vaguely recall setting up the assistant and putting in the credentials for admin.. although I'm not sure if i put in the right stuff. My command to thaw a machine current looks like this
    /Applications/Faronics/DFXControl.app/Contents/MacOS/DFXControl command <<adminfordeepfreeze>> <<passwordfordeepfreeze>> bootThawed
I run this as root. I am sending it against machines that are just sitting at the login screens. I feel like I'm missing something very obvious.
Any help would be appreciated! Remember I'm just a n00b.

See this article on disabling Dashboard:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/46236/2005/08/disabledashboard.html
It should work through ARD, though I haven't tried it.

  • Deep Freeze for iPad?

I work at a children's hospital and we are looking for an iPad solution similar to Deep Freeze for PCs. We have used mobile PCs on clumsy carts with Deep Freeze on them so that personal data would be easily wiped. We are looking for something similar so we can replace the old Windows XP computers with iPads. The iPads we currently use have to be collected after each use, formatted, and restored from an image. This process is tedious and time-consuming.

Hello, much like iToaster replied, Apple Configurator could possibly be a solution for you to manage your devices. You do need to use either an iMac, MacBook Pro or other Mac machine to run it off of, but from your original post this shouldn't be an issue for you.
Using Apple Configurator you can actually create profiles, what Apple calls a group of settings. From here you can create restrictions and manage apps, lock down or unlock devices.
Configurator also allows for App management, which has been buggy in the past as well as binding devices to user AD accounts. If you are using a cart model it also simplifies restoring from a backup.
EDIT - if you are concerned about personal data not being wiped off of the device, Configurator also allows you to do mass "imaging" on these devices as opposed to having to do one by one through iTunes.

  • Freezing Mac?

I will probably get a "nasty-gram" from the moderators for this but I felt the need to share this bit of good news for those of us with freezing Macs.

I have learned a lot from you, Thank you!
It seems my situation doesn't allow me to wait until Apple fix the problem. If I don't buy an Mac soon, I will have to buy a PC (that's the last thing I want to do ... hope it will not ends up that way.)
I don't play game at all and will never play game on my Mac. So I guess the freezing issue may not be my problem. I just need a bit of luck not to pick up one with the display problems. .... iei... since when buying a Apple becoming such a complicated task? .....
one more stupid question: if the graphic card is the source of the problem, will watching movie, editing video (part of my project involving using still video images, and using software such as Photoshop/Painter ... also cause freezing?
I can almost hear you laughing already ... hehe ...

  • Deep freeze's reboot frozen command doesn't  finishes

Whenever i send a reboot frozen command from the ARD on the server, it doesn't finishes. The Reboot command is below.
    osascript <<EndOfMyScript
    tell application "System Events"
    tell application process "loginwindow"
    key code 125
    delay .25
    keystroke return
    delay 1
    keystroke "0000"
    keystroke return
    end tell
    end tell
    delay 4
    EndOfMyScript
    DFXPSWD="0000" /Library/Application\ Support/Faronics/Deep\ Freeze/deepfreeze -u "VantageAdmin" -p bootFrozen
    reboot
This execute correctly but it seems like the ARD doesn't recognise that it is done, so it continue running untill manually cancel.
I mean it execute correctly but the command remains in the active task on ARD. What can i do to make this execute and disappear from the active task to history?

Well one option is to break it up into two tasks.
task 1, send unix commands (without the reboot at the end)
task 2, user ard reboot command
Another option would be to que up the command on the client.
send unti command as user root
    launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.atrun.plist
    echo "reboot" | at now+1
the catch is that queing up a command, is that you don't know if the command did sucesfully triggure.
I've never tried to use at with deep freeze, so it would be a good idea to test the results before mass deploying.
the other thing is it can create 'mail'.

  • Deep freeze +imaging = USB trouble

When we image a pc and then freeze the machine the first time you plug in a USB device it takes upwards of 9 Minutes to install the USB device.
After that first device is installed every device thereafter installs in less than 25 seconds. Once I reboot that first usb device once again takes 9 Min.
I realize that is Deep freeze doing it's job. Has anyone found a way to initialize the usb controller so that first time plugging in USB takes less time?
If I thaw the machine and then plug in the USB device and wait 9 minutes for it to install. Then freeze the machine. Every device thereafter installs within 30 seconds even after a reboot.
However if I take an image of this machine once USB has been initialized and put it on a new computer I am back to square one again. The first device plugged in takes 9 minutes until I do the thaw, plugin, and freeze trick.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Software alternative to deep freeze

i want software which install software virtually and when we to to remove it remove all files and registry completely from computer.like deep freeze but not deep freeze.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean by install virtually.  Being unfamiliar with deep freeze probably doesn't help.
You can do a file copy "install".  Especially on a machine already has a .net framework on it - although you could also install and uninstall a .net framework separately.
Put exe, config, dll, xml or file based database in a folder that isn't under program files.
Your uninstall process could then be to delete that folder.
    Bam, it's gone.
Or you could use one of:
The free installshield lite you are entitled to with recent versions of visual studio.
Wix - bit of a steep slippery learning curve with that since it's "old school".
The new new visual studio setup and deployment project http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2014/04/17/visual-studio-installer-projects-extension.aspx
Or you could of course just write a web site and then there's nothing to install and uninstall.
I also don't quite follow why this is a windows forms question.  Maybe it should be in a different forum.
    Hope that helps.

  • MacPro + Deep Freeze = Problems

We have over 15 MacPro and we purchased licenses to install deep freeze. I have been successful in installing deep freeze on our Imac's (=75) when I am encountering the same error on our MP. It reads: Encounter Error when writting data, the error code is: 0XE00002c0. I have researched on the Faronics website but nothing. On the apple side I get many different problems that users encounter and they get the same error. Any ideas?

I'd like to set up a lab of computers for people with learning disabilities, but I'd like to do so with deep freeze. Unfortunately, it costs money I don't have.

I just want to know if there is a way to freeze your linux installation like the Deep Freeze program from Faronics.

  • Timemachine freezes mac book pro

Timemachine is completely freezing my mac book pro (running 10.6.2). The freeze happens shortly after it is done analysing the disk. I get the same behaviour when backing up wirelessly or wired. The backup is to a 1TB Timecapsule with plenty of free space. After the freeze occurs, I can't start or exit any programs, if I'm in the Dashboard I am stuck there. The mouse pointer still moves, and the clock is still running, but that is about it.

I did a repair on the spare bundle, but no errors were found.
I did do a complete backup to a new USB external disk, that ran to completion with no errors, which suggests to me that the problem really is with the time capsule.
    That does seem suspicious.
Is there a way to force Time Machine to rebuild that Time Capsule disk from scratch?
Do you have anything else there besides the backups? If not, you can just erase it. Use the +*Airport Utility+* app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.
If there is other stuff there, open the TC with the Finder and delete the sparse bundle.

  • Time machine freezing mac since mavericks update

Time machine is freezing up my mac since I updated to Mavericks. I was having issues with it so I just decided to reformat my time machine external drive. I can back up manually when I tell it to, but when left alone to do automatic back ups, I will come back to my mac and it is unresponsive, I see the time machine drive light flickering, and when I turn off that drive, the computer starts responding again.

Interesting. I now have my external TM HD connected directly to my iMac through USB 2. All seems to be working properly now. Had the computer set to wake up last night at 12 and it did do a back up then. Also when I logged on and woke it from sleep this this AM it went into a back up. Could it still potentially be the HD or FW 800 cable? When I connected the FW 800 directly to the mac, it didn't improve anything, but that was one of the same cables I was using before. If I use FW I do have to daisy chain the drive to my other external iPhoto drive due to having only 1 FW 800 port on my mac.

  • Mac Os 10.6.8 Crash and video freeze, Mac Pro

    Hi,
I just installed Mac OS 10.6 on my old Mac Pro, early 2009 (8 gib of Ram installed). I still have my old Mac OS10.5.8 on another internal boothable disk.
It went well the first day or so but now I'm experiencing some major video problems: picture of the desktop keeps freezing, videos are crashing in Firefox 30 with Flash 14 plugin, etc. I have 2 internal identical video cards and 2 separate monitors (NVIDIA-GT120). Here is a picture of what's happening:
I have installed upgrade for FireFox and Flash Player plugin 14.
I've tried to deactivate Flash option for "Accelerated": nothing is changing, the problem is still there.
Everytime a have a window that I move from one monitor to another smear and freeze all over on both monitors.
I have QuickTime 7 and QuickTime for mac OS 10.6. I want to keep my older version because I have Quicktime Pro.
Where should I start, I'm no expert, thank you in advance to explain it  to me in a simple manner if you answer to that post.
    Please help,
    Thank's!

Thank you for answering so promptly,
I already made a backup with TimeMachine of my new and original files of Mac OS 10.6 system.
May I point out that I've just installed Mac Os 10.6 as an upgrade of  Mac OS, from 10.5. I have now Mac OS 10.5 on one boothing disk and Mac Os 10.6 on another boothing disk. I can wether rebooth on one or the other. I upgraded to my new Os from a clone copy of 10.5 to 10.6 on a different disk: I'm aware that my new Mac OS may be not be as clean as it should be.
I also did all the operations you where mentionning such as disconnecting all non essential peripherals (even my main monitor) then power it up again. I also reboothed in "Safe Mode" and started again in normal mode afterwards. I've even zapped the "P RAM". I even did a "Repair Permissions with "Dislk Utilities". Nothing of that nature have resolved the various issues that I metionned in my previous Post.
"Isolating an issue by using another user account"
Thank you for the link, I shall read it carefully and thoroughly. Yes, I have tried to logged-in as a new user before your Post. I  think this solution helped afterwards.
I don't use these options often, I'm the only user and I'm not that familiar with all these options. I've tried to share some folders or files and also tried to setup an automatic password but I was not that very succesfull. As this article is mentionning: the main idea is to "check if  the Mac OS is behaving as expected" in a new user account.
The answer to that is a positive "yes" and I did regain a better control of my Mac OS new system afterwards.
I did not understand at first your expression "If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work". Reading a little about it, I think it has to do with an "iCloud feature to set up a network of Mac computers that you cant then access remotely". I don't have an iCloud connection/account installed/set-up. I only expremimented with that option once or twice many years ago with my iPod so, I,m not familiar with that option.
"Deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer"
Since I'm not a newbie on the Mac, I know how "Third Party's Applications/utilities" may really mess up an OS and make it behave in unusual ways sometime... I did find some of them installed in the menu that where messing up my new Mac OS. I deleted/deactivated them completly and reinstalled them one by one, carefully reboothing my Mac between each new installation. Some upgrades where installed for some.
Question about User Account vs. System's Files
Can I delete certain presets and/or preference files only stored in my "User Account" but should I never do this with files stored in the "System Folder" or the "Main Library"? Sorry, I'm an "Older Guy" and I'm used to older versions of Macs... Thank you for suggesting any good updated documentation on that matter.
Which Quicktime to use with mac OS 10.6: 7.6.6 or 7.7?
This is not clear at all on Apple's Web Site. I've downloaded and installed both. Maybe this is my problem. I wish Apple would more clear about it for those like me who want to use Quicktime Pro: 7.6.6 for Mac Os 10.6 and 7.7 for Mac Os 10.5???
    As for now...
My system is behaving better and it' also much more stable now, thank you! All the suggested steps have been made to to resolve certain issues.
    But not all...
I've still have the problem with QuickTime 7 and Flash 14 plugin when I browse and watch certain videos on the Web after a certain time. It's still very annoying when it's starts: I get an all smeared up display of my desktop afterwards (as shown in the above example in my first post). Restarting my Mac resolve's it for a a while only... It seem's that there's a problem with the Video Ram stored when Quicktime/Flash 14 are used? They freeze the System's process who is trying to erase the old data and prevent's it to replace/refresh it with new data on screen...
Thank you for your time and looking forward to read you,
    Robert Marchand

  • 10.6.8 Freezes Mac Pro

    Guys,
    Hopefully someone can help!
My Mac Pro has worked flawlessly for over 2 years BUT the latest 10.6.8 upgrade is creating a nightmare for me - the machine randomly hangs (not always the same program), sometimes it won't even empty the trash unless I powerdown hard reset from power button - disconnect power and then restart. I have verified the startup disc, checked permissions, closed everything down that I can from within activity monitor and still it refuses to be stable. I am about to try setting up a new user account to see if that helps but, as I tearing my hair out, I was looking for pointers that anyone might have? My boot drive is an SSD from Intel -
Model:          INTEL SSDSA2M160G2GC   which has never caused any problems. If anyone needs more specific info please ask. This is a very bad joke as it stands and I just can't work reliably.

I was having this "freeze" issue on an older MAC I decided to resurrect: MAC PRO A1186, Snow Leopard 10.6.8, 4g ram, 500gb HD.
After many attempts: fresh install of OS, replace PRAM battery, Rest NVRAM, repair disk permissions, turn off TimeMachine, turn off SpotLight, and a few more....
I finally had success in a simple obvious way: The previous owner had 4 dual-DVI video cards installed. They weren't optimized in setup. I pulled out 3 of them, left Video Card 1 in the machine. Issue solved! Running well now.

  • Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Pro Freezes (Mac OS 10.7.5)

    Hi,
I am having a problem with Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro, version 9.5.2.
Whenever I open a PDF file, it frequently freezes and I am left
with the twirling color circle. Sometimes (less frequently), the
PDF file opens nicely. However, when I also save any changes
to a PDF file, it will also freeze and I am left with the twirling
color circle. If I wait several minutes sometimes, the twirling
will stop and the software returns to working. I have this
problem regardless of the size of file being either read or
    modified.
An IT friend has installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled
Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro a couple of times in order to solve
this problme and doing so does not changed anuything.
My computer is a MacPro4,1. It  runs Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
    (11G63). It has a 2 X 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor and 16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 memory. The
harddrive on which it is installed has 522 GB available.
    Best wishes,

I would suggest you try applying the 9.5.3 update first to see if the behavior improves.
If it doesn't, you may want to run a Disk Permissions repair from the Disk Utility.
