Deep Fried USB ports.... PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone...
I was messing around with a 4-Port USB Hub that I got the other day. It's a cheapy that didn't come with an external power adapter, but a port to plug one in. So I found the appropriate size power adapter (from an internet router) and decided to plug the hub into my G4 iBook. As soon as I did so, the computer quit, and I'm assuming that there was a power surge. I restarted after unplugging and removing the battery. Now, one of my USB ports is completely F'd and the other one doesn't seem to have enough power to get my new external HD to mount. (It's not the HD, I just checked it out on my brother's computer). Everything other peripheral device works, including syncing my iPhone, but only on one of the ports. Do I now have to replace my USB ports? (costly?!)
Jan

Edit
What I meant to say was that all of my other peripherals work on the one functioning USB port except the HD. These include an iPhone, iPod, Laser mouse & thumbdrive. And when I plug in the USB Hub, it's LED lights up to indicate that it's working, but nothing plugged into the hub will work. It's like having half of a USB port...
Advice PLEASE!

For apps you need at least iOS 2. The last update for the 1G is 3.1.3 that you  get here:

However, there are not that many apps compatible with the 1G even with 3.1.3.

I HAVE MY DISPLAY PLUGGED UP AND IT JUST HAS A BLACK SCREEN BUT EVERYTHING IS WORKING ON THE ACTUAL DISPLAY PLEASE HELP

    Hello there Kevin,
I was researching the issue you describe and found 2 resources that may help. First there is this section from Apple Cinema Display: Troubleshooting steps found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2810
    No image on the screen
Make sure the computer is turned on.
Make sure the power cord is plugged in properly.
Make sure the display cables are connected to your computer properly.
Make sure the DVI or Mini DisplayPort display cable is connected securely.
Make sure your computer is not in sleep mode.
Make sure the brightness is set properly. The brightness control is under the right front edge of the display.
Check for and install all available software updates. Software updates may provide solutions to many common issues.
Note: If the display power cord is plugged into a grounded wall outlet or power strip, find out if power to the outlet has been interrupted. You can test the outlet by plugging in something that you know works, like a desk lamp or radio.
If those steps don't get the display working then here is another article, with some pretty in depth troubleshooting for displays named Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays from http://http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573

  • How to DIY-repair fried USB ports on Mac mini?

Accidentally I fried (or so it seems) all the four USB ports of a Mac mini 2 GHz Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz 2 GB 160 GB SuperDrive AirPort Extreme Bluetooth (released by Apple on August 2007) with Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. It was after connecting an iPhone AD/DC to power a USB hub.
I can access the machine using a wireless keyboard but the USB keybord or any other USB device is not recognized when plugged into the USB ports of such Mac mini.
I know that I can carry the Mac mini to a repair service or switching the main logic board, but it costs more than the current price of the machine!
I was thinking of some kind of DIY, even if it requires soldering... Any ideas to replace the fried USB ports with new ones?
Note: the USB ports and main logic board seem OK after visual inspection, but I guess that the former are fried since resetting the PRAM and SMC did not work.
    Thanks.

DIY soldering repairs are pretty much out of the question.
Most, if not all, IC's that would be related to the problem
are of the BGA (ball grid array) variety and require special
equipment to remove and replace as all the connections
    are under the IC.
The only DIY alternative would be to purchase a logic board
and replace it yourself.  Just Google "mac mini logic board
replacement" for sources and how to's.  Apple themselves,
will not sell you logic boards, so you need to get it from a
third party vendor.  As to which ones are are the most reputable,
I cannot really say.  I would suggest avoiding any Ebay offers
    that are not reputable retailers.
As usual, be aware that if a price on such an item is too
good to be true, it probably isn't.

My Iphone still won't charge even after I had tried plugging it in and waiting then restarting it, it still showed up on the screen that it has to be charged, even when it was in the USB port. I tried plugging it into the wall, a computer, I even switched out the USB cables but it still wouldn't charge. Help me please

    Hello Isabellap,
It sounds like your iPhone 4S is not charging when plugged in.  I found an article with some steps that might help with this.  I recommend reviewing the steps in the sections titled "Battery does not charge from the USB power adapter" and "Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off" in the following article:

  • IPhone 6 won't play with Kenwood stereo USB port. Help !!

I have a Kenwood KDC-BT743U Stereo in my car, which has a front panel USB port.  I've been able to connect my iPhone 4S and play music from my iTunes catalog as well as stream music from Pandora, Soundcloud, Tune In Radio, Mixcloud et al, without any problems until yesterday.....
Now that I've upgraded my phone to a iPhone 6 and when I connect it to the stereo via the USB port, it doesnt play at all.  After about 2 minutes of trying to connect , I recieve a 'USB Error" .   As I stated, I've had no problems with my iPhone 4S, which I've used with this same stereo deck for the last two years without any problem what so ever.
I'm looking for some guidance on next steps to take in order to fix the problem? Did Apple change the spec in some sort of way?  Do I need to go to Kenwood for a firmware update (their website provides no information about iPhone 6 compatability with any of their stereo's which is very odd to me) ?
Please help, my life in the car during long commutes is just not the same......

    Possible Solution:
    1. Go to Settings > General
    2. Go to Restrictions
    3. Enter Passcode (possibly x2)
    4. Enable Restrictions
    5 Disallow CarPlay
    6. Reset Network Settings (Not 100% sure if this step is needed)
    7. Have at least 1 song in Apple Music App
    8. Have Iphone at Home Screen
    9. Connect Apple Original Cable
    10. That 1 Song should start playing
    11. Open Prefered Streaming App and hit Play
Carplay negatively affects USB connection with Non-Carplay USB Audio Receivers.
I have the Iphone 6 with 8.3 iOS connected to Pioneer avh-41000dvd car stereo and the above solution fixed USB audio issues, including Error code 22-65.
If you are having issues upon reconnect, disconnect and bring Iphone to home screen and reconnect.

  • Fried USB ports?

Hi - new user here. Wondering if anyone can shed light on a problem:
Just moved house, and have been setting up iMac. However, when I tried plugging in my Belkin USB port expander, and then plugging in applications to that device, the Mac told me the USB was overdrawing power (hadn't seen that message before).
Since then, none of my USB ports work, which means I can't use the keyboard or the mouse. Also, upon restarting the machine, it tried to find a Bluetooth mouse. Maybe it can't find the regular one, so figured it should look for a remote device.
Can anyone help? If I have fried my ports, if there any succour to be had?
    Thanks a million in advance....

Sorry to hear of your problem. I assume you unplugged the port expander and then tried plugging just the keyboard in to your Mac with the mouse plugged in to the keyboard? If so, did you try using different ports? Imacs have 2 or 3 USB ports depending on the model so you want to try each one. Make sure to just try just the keyboard and mouse with nothing else connected even if anything else connected is powered off. I don't know how it would automatically try to find a bluetooth mouse unless bluetooth was turned on so you might just want to turn bluetooth off for now until you figure out whether you fried your USB ports or not.

  • USB Insanity Please help

So, I know there are alot of topics here regarding USB Card Upgrades on these machines. But I am pretty sure I have read them all and none of them are helping me... So here it goes. I love this machine. I have a new PowerBook. But I cant get rid of this machine (I have alot of work on it and I just like the way it runs better then OSX). And up untill now I havent ever needed USB ports on it, but I want this snazzy keyboard and I just bought a new I-Pod. And now I do... That being said. Here is my problem.
The machine is a beige G3
    Mac OS 9.2.1
    Machine ID 510
    Rom Version $77D.40F2
    PCI Slots-
A-1 Firewire Card (which works great)
    B-2 ATI Rage (Works Great)
B-3 In this slot I used to have a ATI Mach 64 which worked fine. But I took it out and put the rage in. When you look under System Profiler it still shows it being active in that slot. Which is is not......... Problem???
I got a Usb card from Staples, that even has the MAC logo on it. So I popped the side case off. blah blah blah. Installed it in the bottom PCI Slot. Restarted. I realize I dont have any USB Extentions. SO I go to apple support and Download what I assume to be the correct one... "USB Card Support 1.4.1". And ran the installer. Re-booted the machine.
"Error 11" "Hold down shift key to temp disable extensions".
OK, so I tried that. and it still gives me the same message... SO I took the card out. And it boots up fine. So it would seem that the issue is not the extension its the card, Right? Which is wierd because I have a FireWire Card in the top PCI Slot and it works fine. So I tried taking it out. And putting the USB Card in its place. No Luck there either.
When I boot back up without the card in and look under my extensions these USB related extensions are there.
    USB Authoring Support 1.1.2
    USB Device Extension 1.4.1
    Mass Storage Extension 2.0.4
    USB Mass Storage Support 2.0.4
    USB Print Share 1.0.1
    USB Software Locater 1.4.1
    USB Support 1.4.1
This is all the Information I know to give you guys in here. I really hope someone can help me. My Frustration levels are going through the roof on this one. If Anyone does have a solution please be thorough. I know enough to work my way through stuff as long as I have all the info I need.... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER!!!!
    -Mike

    Welcome Mike,
Just to shuffle a little bit of common confusion out the door: the "built-in, soldered to the logic board, remove it and the computer's dead" ATI 64-bit graphics chip common to all Beige G3s is identified as "ATImach64" in Apple System Profiler (ASP). The confusion comes from the fact that ASP thinks there must be a PCI slot for this darned thing and makes one up, although it usually gives it an "F" slot, which we don't have.
However, the fact that you're seeing it in the "B" slot sounds like something a CUDA reset (as suggested) will eliminate.
Newer Belkin USB cards at Staples have gone from the OPTI chipset (bad for Beige) to the NEC chipset (usually good). However, there may be problems if it has more than two ports. It could be power draw.
The total power available to the Beige's three PCI slots is 45 watts. Period. The only way to exceed this is for one or more PCI cards to have an external power tap that wires directly to the power supply wiring harness. The only card I've seen with external power capability and is Beige-compatible is an ancient Apple FireWire card. This thing is so old that it only supports cameras--no external drives.
I've been frustrated in finding out the power draw of ATI PCI video cards. So, for planning purposes, assume that any video card will pull 25 W. That means that the other two cards must draw less than 20W combined. For a long time, we have suspected some Belkin cards of drawing more power than other USB cards.
I have a Macally UH2-222 three-port card (two external and one internal) that is USB 2.0/1.1 compliant. Works great. It's now discontinued and its replacement (UH2-222) is a 4+1 port card--untested in the Beige G3. However, if you do a Google Mac search for "UH2-222," you can still find these around.
Keep plugging away. We seldom have people strike out around here.

    Hi,
Both ports (next to the headphones port) are USB 3.0 ports and they will fit normal/standard USB flash drives. Please turn the flash drive the right way before insert.

  • Battery X, trouble powering up...I'm deep in the jungle, please help!

On Jan 14th I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" Retina from MicroCenter.  I am traveling deep in the jungle in a remote part of Costa Rica and I started noticing that it wasn't holding a charge (at first I assumed it had just ran out and I didn't plug in the power cable properly).  Yesterday I had to plug it in to power it up and I notice the battery has an "X" on it and says "No Batteries Available".  I did a quick search online and decided to try a SMC reset so I shutdown the laptop, held Shift+Control+Option+Power, and tried to power it up but the computer would not turn on or do anything at all.
Next morning, comptuer was hot and fans were running high speed (it was not plugged into power overnight so it must have been accessing power somehow).  Sometimes it powered up when clicking power button, sometimes nothing, sometimes the fans would start up.  When it did power up, it wouldn't get past the grey screen before shutting down again.  Then sometimes without even touching anything it would turn on again.
Been trying different keyboard startups but they don't seem to be working properly.  Tried resetting PRAM with Command+Option+P+R but got nothing... holding down Option does nothing.... The only thing that turns the computer on is Command+R, but it only works if I release the buttons quickly...if I hold them down (trying to get it into Recovery mode) nothing happens.  If I do manage to get it on, a few mins later it the window will pop up that say "are you sure you want to shut down?" but even if I click Cancle it shuts down, or just shuts down randomly.
Tried running Disk Utility and it can't complete Verifying Disk, it just instructs me to get into Recovery mode to repair disk which I haven't had any luck doing.
I have insurance through MicroCenter (same coverage as AppleCare + accidental) but I tried calling them and the Tech Support guy was useless... I have a lot of work I need to do here and would be happy enough if I could at least get it to work off of the power cable without the battery (even though that is tricky b/c we are running off of a generator so I would be limited to the hours that the generator is on) but I can't get anything done or do a proper Time Machine backup with it powering off randomly.  There's no chance of getting to a Genius Bar or anything out here so you are my only hope!  Please help me!!

When i put the earphones on it does work, but when i disconnect them it says 'Dock connected' but theres nothing connected there.
It did get a lil wet the other day but it shuld be dry by now, i tried the vacuum thing, but i checked the dock port & there is a little yellow wire in there that i hadnt seen before could this be it?? shuld i push it back?
i think this is the problem, but i need some advice.
    Im going crazy! please help!

Sure.  Push it back in so that you can't see it anymore.  That'll help a lot.
You obviously have a hardware problem.  The only solution of which I'm aware is through Apple.

  • USB port problems: Help welcomed.

When plugging any of my iPods into the computer via the USB port, I receive no reaction.
A half-way full battery becomes frozen on the iPod and that is the absolute only reaction I get get.
I've tried using different USB ports on this computer and have even switched the cables I was connecting with to no avail.
My iPods can all be charged using the wall charger. It is almost as if the computer is not recognizing the cable.
That said, I have had iPods for quite sometime (my first was a 20GB) and have never been faced with this problem before.
    All help is appreciated!

There are various things you can try depending on whether you use a Mac or Windows.

  • Solution to only TWO USB ports, please

I should have paid more attention when I bought my Mac. I didn't realize there were only TWO USB ports on board. My job requires me to be mobile, and on any given day, I could be using up to 10 USB ports. I know they make hubs, one of which I've tried, but it didn't work. Does anyone recommend a particular brand of hub that's RELIABLE and can handle both input and output?
I'm stunned that Apple would have just 2 USB ports. My old Dell had 4, and if I remember right, I could have specified even more when they were building it.
    Diane

Yes, that's the ExpressCard/34 port (labeled in this linked image). The ExpressCard port also be used for media card readers, WAN (wireless broadband) cards, etc. Good for a USB expansion hub because it's a small form factor and won't take up one of the two existing USB ports.
