Deep into Power Nap

Hi,
I have disabled Power Nap but I realize that it still is working when on AC. I have a set of rules in Mail.app to keep the mailboxes organized, and I have an iPhone where I only push the Inbox.
Problem is, I don't want Power Nap to update my e-,mail because it also distributes e-mail to the folders on the rules. Sometimes I only pick my macbook later on the day and I need to have all the e-mail I+m receiving on the IMAP inbox.
Does anyone know how to uninstall Power Nap? (macbook retina mid 2012 here)
or better yet
Does anyone know how to go deeper on the Power Nap (maybe by editing preferences files) and select which operations I want Power Nap to do and not to do?
I know I can solve it by closing the Mail.app before I put my computer to sleep, but I actually like to keep it open, I keep all the apps I use on a daily basis open so when I wake it up it's faster to start working.
Kind regards,
João de Sousa Aroso

Going to try it, although it will make me have to check for mails manually while the laptop is on right?
edit: it doesn't. Somehow the mails are pushed to my laptop although mail is in manual setting. Nevertheless I don't believe this will solve the power nap issue. Mail.app behaviour is the same, even having manual checking or not.
Is there anyone who knows how to manually configure the actions while power naping?
Thanks...

  • What determines if a program is active during Power Nap?

After updating to 10.8.2, I noticed that my 2011 MBA was logging onto all my chat services for a few minutes every hour via Adium.  I assume this must be because the MBA is waking up into "Power Nap" mode.  I thought that only certain programs were allowed to be active in that mode, and I can't understand why Adium would be one of them.  Since this only seems to have started with 10.8.2, could it be a new bug?

Are you sure your Mac is in sleep mode? Maybe it couldn't get into sleep mode and fans are working hardly because the lid is closed. Try to close all apps and put it in sleep mode, and see if fans turn on.
If so, and as you have a new Mac, return it and you will get a new one for free or you will get the one you have repaired. The new one should have that issue fixed

  • Why does power nap time machine backup not work on my August 2012 macbook pro retina?

Hello. I got a MacBook Pro with retina display in August of this year 2012. I have done the SMC ? firmware update and I have 10.8.2 installed on my machine. Power nap still doesn't seem to work. I have the button in energy saver preferences and I have clicked it so it looks like power nap should work. When I am running Time Machine backup with the time capsule and I close the lid (plugged into power) it appears that no progress is made when I reopen the lid. I have closed the lid with activity monitor running and with network displayed. When I reopen the lid it may take up to one minutes to come out of sleep. When it does come out  of sleep I can see that there has been no network traffic.  Eventually, time machine backup resumes and I can see several megabytes per second. When I closed the lid overnight, just to make sure backup didn't restart after lid closing, I saw that no progress had been made in backup when I reopened the lid.
What options are left if I already have 10.8.2 and I have done the required firmware?  One person has mentioned a clean install but I really don't like to have to reenter all the different passwords and all the different preferences again unless that's absolutely necessary. Are there any other options left to try before a clean install?
One other bit of information.  I have filevault turned on; however, it looks like others have a working power nap even with file vault enabled.  If this is not an option, the power nap button should be grayed out when the machine is in filevault.
    Thank you for any help.

Yeah I still have the same problem BTW; it still does not work.
The second I open the lid and take it out of sleep mode, it starts to backup automagically, but when it's sleeping EVEN when it's connected to AC power, TM backups do NOT work to my OS X Server.
I don't understand what the problem is here.
I didn't before but I do have FileVault turned on now -- should that make a difference?
In either situation it didn't work, but now that I think about it, I could understand why it wouldn't backup while asleep.  Apparently the encrypted volume will stay encrypted during sleep and even at the lock screen; it's not until you open the lid and log in from the lock screen that it will unlock the encrypted boot volume.
But even still, I did *not* have FV turned on before, and this still did not work.
Is there some third party solution that can do what I want this to do?
    Here's my use case:
1.) I have a mac mini at home that I use when I'm at home; it runs OS X server.app (bought and paid for) and has TM server turned on.
2.) I have a laptop that I mainly use at work and I don't use at all when I come home (ie. when I'm ready to head home for the day I close the lid and don't open it until I'm back at work the next day, but the laptop does come home with me every day).
What I want to have happen is this:
1.) The minute my laptop enters my home wifi lan (even though it's still asleep with lid closed) I want it to automatically backup the boot drive.
I thought that's what Power Nap was supposed to do, but then I found out that in order for this to work, you have to be connected to AC power; so then I tried that -- ie. every day I come home, I put my laptop in a docking station that has AC power, but TM backups while lid closed / sleeping STILL do not occur!
Thanks for your help everyone...Looking forward to a solution that works.
    EDIT:
    I found this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4158709
"It looks like Power Nap doesn't perform Time Capsule backups when the MacBook Air screen is closed."
So apparently that is yet *another* requirement to get powernap working.  The lid can not be closed.
What is the difference between sleep with lid open and sleep with lid closed!?

  • Power Nap Destroying File Systems?

    Hey eveyone,
I had a client come in the other day because every time he reboots his MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), it boots into the recovery partition.  After taking a look through his parition table, his primary partition is simply gone.  Instead of a mountable OS, I have an empty free space that's waiting to be paritioned.  After running Data Rescue, I pulled the recovered log files from before this started happening, and the very last thing to occur was software update via Power Nap.
Has anyone run into any similar issues with Power Nap?  The MacBook Pro is only a few months old, and hasn't seen heavy usage.
    Thanks!

  • Time Machine backups during sleep using Power Nap

My Time Machine only saves local snapshots while sleeping, but I was expecting full backups instead.
    Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter, provides the ability to continue saving regular Time Machine backups even if your mac goes to sleep. The dialog as shown in Preferences/ Energy Saver/ Power Adapter, states;
"While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."
The term backup implies that Time Machine will write to your designated Time Machine drive (assuming it is connected and available) as opposed to simply creating a snapshot. Time Machine backups show as purple checkmarks/timestamps in the Time Machine "browser", and snapshots show as white checkmarks. The difference is that snapshots are written locally (not to your external drive) and are only temporary in nature - they are not true back ups.
I am running a Macbook Air 13" (mid 2012) with Mountain Lion 10.8.4, so it is Power Nap compatible. I am also running an Apple Wireless network using the new 802.11ac 2TB Time Capsule. The Time Capsule is my designated Time Machine drive, it has plenty of free space and contains no other data. My network is correctly configured to Wake for Wi-Fi network access (which actually works to my suprise), and my Macbook Air is always connected to power. Despite all of these factors, reviewing my Time Machine records always indicates that only snapshots (white checkmarks) have been recorded every hour, and proper backups (purple checkmarks) are only done when the machine is awake. This does not sound like the "back up" that was promised with Power Nap. Are my expectations mistaken, or is there something else I should be doing?

There is a popup dialog that shows up when backing up wirelessly to the AirPort Extreme's connected HDD.  I'm not quite sure why it does this during wireless backup, because on my 17" MBP, I also only see the icon spinning in the menu bar.
If I could shut off that dialog, that would also solve some problems.
Aha! Thanks. A popup would definitely be more intrusive then the menu icon.

  • HT204032 Power NAP and Time Machine Backup

One of the features of Power Nap is to allow backup even when the notebook is in a sleep .
i notcied that even when Power Nap is enabled , i loose the backup process immediatly if PC goes to sleep. the condition happens when the backup is already working and after some time when not using the PC it goes to Sleep .
is there a solution for the same ?

Same here. Doesn't seem to work as advertised? Neither does it continue a backup when going into a "power nap"
The info isn't clear, but TM has always cancelled a backup when going to sleep.
nor does it start a new backup during a "power nap".
It should, but only if the previous one was more than an hour earlier.

  • When will Power Nap come to MacBook Pros?

I know it's aviablable on Airs and Pro Retina's but does anyone know if it will be coming to MacBook Pros anytime soon? I just got a 2012 MacBook 15"

Power nap is not that impressive.  Im using a MacBook Air 13" 2011 i7 and it has this feature, but I turn it off.  The whole idea of putting a computer into standy is to save power and not let systems run that dont need to be running.  Its a useless feature.  If people cannot wake their computer from sleep to check emails etc, they really have time management issues and are just lazy.

  • How do I use my Mac plugged into power?

Hey guys, I usually use my laptop at home, plugged into power, for 3-4 hours a day (at night, most of the time), always with full charge.
I'm aware of the battery calibration and that Apple suggests that we do it once a month and everything.
My doubt is, during the period when I'm not using my Mac (during daytime, when I'm at work), what's preferable:
    1. That I leave it plugged into the power, so the charger keeps the green light and the battery level?
    OR
    2. That I unplug it from power when I'm not using and then, when I get home to use, I plug it and use?
I've been doing the second way, but I'm afraid that during the hours that the laptop is off and unplugged from power, that it might lose some battery capacity and then, when I plug it again, the charger start to charge the battery.
Anyway, the way I've been doing, when I connect the charger, it's always the green light, it never starts to charge, although the battery level never exceeds 99% ( but it says "fully charged").
    So, what's preferable?
    Thanks!

There is no reason to leave the computer on battery power if you can connect it to an AC power source. Leave it connected to the charger unless you need to use it on battery power.

  • Force External Dell Display Into Power Save Mode

How do I set up my MacBook Pro to send a video signal to my external Dell monitor to tell it to go into Power Save Mode when the MacBook Pro goes to "Sleep" (after the Preference set default of 14 minutes)?

I've tried a factory reset on the monitors. My monitors sleep settings are fine and they wake up from being asleep perfectly. As of this morning my little trick of unplugging them and swapping connections has stopped working. Now, when I swap cables the video card automatically assigns the primary video output to one of the monitors and keeps the other one asleep. very strange. So when I unplug the mini video adaptor from the dvi cord and then place that same cord in the native dvi output on the video card the card automatically reassigns the primary video output to that channel. So no matter how much witching I do I always end up with the system acting like I have a stretched desktop but with only the left display working while the right one is asleep. It's time to give apple support a call.

  • New LG Monitor Screen Image Keeps Shifting a few pixels left and right / goes into power save mode

I just purchased a new LG Computer Monitor from Best Buy today and hooked it up to my PowerMac computer. Shortly after setting it up, the entire screen image started sporadically shifting left and right a few pixels. And then, at seemingly random times, it'll shut itself down, going into power save mode. I checked the cables to make sure they were secure and they seem to be. Could there be some sort of interference that's causing it? Or would it be the graphics card? My computer is only a couple years old. Please help!

Do you have another computer you can plug the monitor into to test?

the only place I can find to enable power and screen savings is on the printer LCD itself. Is there somewhere else to look for this option? I look at printer HP on windows go to properties and there is no way to enable power saver mode.
