Default app for opening attachments

I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and the 30 day trial for office 2004. How the heck do I remove "word" as the default app for opening attachments and make Appleworks the default app!? I've read a whole lot of previous questions but can't get an answer. dlog

If you are referring to Word files received as an email attachment, save the attachment from the message to the Desktop or your preferred location of choice.
Select the Word file via the Finder and use Get Info for the file.
At Open With, select AppleWorks via the pop-up window.
Below "Use this application to open all documents like this", select Change All.

  • How do I change the default app for opening a file;

If I right click on a file in finder, it tells me what the default app for opening the file is.  it also gives me a short list of other apps.
I would like to change the defaults for several file types, and also delete one app from the short list and add a different one.
    How do I do this?
    thanks

    You could try this:
    - right-click (tap with 2 fingers on the apple trackpad) on a file you want to open in openoffice
    - move the cursor over "open with". You should see the default app, then some suggestions, then app store, then at the end, "other...".  Select "other..."
    - find openoffice in your applications folder and select it  (if it is dimmed, change "enable: " from "recommended applications" to "all applications", then you can select "openoffice")
    - check "always open with"
    - then, click "open".  The file will open in openoffice and from now on, openoffice will be the default application to open the type of file you just opened.  You should also see the icon of all files of the same type change to the openoffice file icon.
This is supposed to work, but that's not always the case, especially when the default app happens to be an Apple app.  If you don't want to use that Apple app, delete it (or move it elsewhere if you want a backup). That can help.
    Good luck!

  • Making iWork the default apps for opening Microsoft Office documents

Is there a way to make Pages, Numbers and Keynote the default apps for opening Microsoft Office documents, such that if I double-click a Word document it launches Pages and opens, etc.? I know I can do it by double-clicking the Office document and dragging it to the appropriate iWork app in the dock, but it would be nice to have it happen by default. That way I can put Office in my rearview mirror!

Fantastic - worked exactly as advertized. Thank you both!! Office is now a distant memory (except when I have to save in MS formats to send files to the unfortunate masses).

  • Mail default applications for opening attachments

I recently had to install Open Office in order to be able to open those kinds of documents produced by my colleagues. The only problem is that it now becomes the default application for opening .doc, .xls and .pps documents. I have changed this using command+i on each type and making sure I selected the "change all" so that each app opens under it's appropriate iWork program, but I still have a problem with Mail.
In Mail, if I get a .doc attachment, clicking on it automatically launches Open Office. Worse, when I right-click and choose "open with", Open Office is listed twice at the top of the list!
I loathe Open Office with a passion, not least because of this situation, but also because it frequently crashes and is still bound to using xterm. Nevertheless, I have to keep it as my colleagues are all on Ubuntu Linux and insist on using it for spreadsheets (to be honest, Open Office is okay on Linux).
If only iWork apps could open OpenOffice documents... ah well.
Any solutions would be most welcome!

Here's how you can set your preference for which application to use on a given file type:
    1. select a file of that type
    2. press CMD-I to bring up the file information
    3. Click on the little triangle to expand the "Open With" section
    4. Select the application you want to use for that type of file
    5. Click on the "Change All" button
This has worked for me in the case where I have Parallels Desktop installed and it wants to use my Office 2000 installation under Parallels to open MS Word & Excel attachments. I changed these to be opened by NeoOffice, and it works both from the finder and when opening attachments in Mail.
    I hope this helps...

  • Make default app for opening files NOT default app

A long time ago I assigned TexEdit as the default app to open all basic text files.
Now I've started using Bean and whenever I edit a Bean file it's icon changes to a TexEdit file instead of retaining the Bean icon.
Even using Get Info to change it to open with Bean only lasts until the file is edited again.
How can I tell the system to leave the Bean files alone and not open them with TexEdit?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Ron

    Eric... yes
Now I'd like to have it so whatever text app creates a file... that app will be the default to open its own files.

  • How do I set Preview to be the default app for opening ALL pdf's?

I have both Preview and Acrobat Professional on a Macbook Air running Mountain Lion.
I don't see an option if I get info on Preview to set it as the default app for all PDF's.
Where can I set this?  I only use Acrobat on occasion for form fill-in but prefer to use Preview.
    thanks

Looks like I got it to work by selecting a document and setting in get info.  For some reason it was not working before.
    never mind

*Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind*
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more. Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • Change default app for excel files

Is there a way to change the default app for viewing Excel files sent as email attachments on iphones and ipads? Currently if you tap the file it opens in Quick Look, tap and hold gives other options to open the file. I want to set the tap affect to open the file in numbers instead.

Any email attachment should give you the option of opening it in any app that can at a minimum view the file. In the File function (i.e. by tapping the "box with an arrow" icon), then swiping to the left and tapping "More", you can turn off a handful of apps from appearing, but also change the order in which they appear on the pop up making your app of choice a little quicker to access. Also, if you tap and hold on the attachment icon in the message, it opens the same functionality with going through the quick look.

  • How do I make Pages my default program for opening doc files

Currently TextEdit is the default program to open doc files that I download from emails. Now that I've installed iWork 08 I would like Pages to be the default program. Thanks!

Right-click any .DOC file and select Get Info. Then choose Pages as the open with application and select "Change For All. Pages is now your default app for .DOCs.

  • Make Word default app for .doc files

How can I make Word the default app for .doc files? I don't want Pages to launch when I clip on a word doc attachment in an email using Entourage.

I notice you say you're having this problem when you open a document attached to an e-mail within Entourage, correct? If so, this may not be an Apple issue. Check Entourage's settings to see if it has an option that specifies what application opens.
Also, do these files have an extension? If not, that could be causing problems. If there's also no extension, the Mac could get confused, and it may not have any basis for allowing you to Change All. (Change all what?) I could not duplicate this behavior by e-mailing myself a file with no extension, but if a Windows machine were involved, that might change... or maybe not.

  • How to make Pages default app for .doc files

How do you make Pages/Numbers the default app for all .doc/.xls files?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Highlight a known Word document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages. If Pages is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages. Repeat with Excel documents & Numbers.
Be aware that the icons for these documents will be plain white icons.

  • What's the utility to assign default apps for various file endings?

A few months ago I found a utility that integrates assigning default apps for various file endings. Made it a lot easier, and more thorough, than picking one of each, opening the GET INFO window, assigning it and clicking "open all like this."
But dang I can't recall the name. It was free or shareware. Seems like I read about it in MacWorld, but I haven't been able to come up with it via key word search. Help?

  • OS X doesn't remember the default app to open a file with [delete the thread]

Alright, so I have installed ACDSee and I want this app to be a default app the image files should be opened with.
However, OS X keeps reverting back to the system's "preview app".
Yes, I obviously ticked the "always open with" box, but it won't remember it. And at preferences (security & privacy) I allowed any app from the internet.
Is there a system file that I'd edit with a text editor and manually set up a default app for a certain file extension?
nevermind, rebooted the OS, and now everything works fine.

Is there a way to change the default program to open a file with another program using a Rededit key. I would like to change the program to open a .g3pp file with vlc instead of media player cause it doesn't read
    it.
Why make life hard for yourself? Just right-click any .g3pp-file, then left-click "Open with". That's all!
