  • Re Install Default Apps

    Hi all,
I had an issue with the BB ID I created when registering my Playbook so I ended up creating a new one and in order to have it used on the Playbook I had to do a security wipe which caused me to loose some of the default applications.
I followed the Knowledge Base article KB26694 but ii only talks about getting Need for Speed and Tetris back, I also want, at the moment, the awesome weather app that used to be there as well.
I cannot find it in the app store and I have not found on the net how to get this back.
Anyone out there able to lend a hand?
    Thanks

    Hello,
This may have been a shortcut that you have created your self. The only apps missing after a wipe would be Need for Speed and Tetris.
    Thank you

  • Contact app missing

At the screen the short cut to contacts is missing. Any clue?

Look under Utilities folder or some other folder maybe some other pages as well.
See if you can use spotlight to find it.
You put the default apps screen back by
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout

  • Problem: Default icons don't match default apps.

In the past, when a file type was set to be opened by an app, it would have that app's file type icon. For example .mov would have the Quicktime Player file icon, and .mkv would have VLC player file icon and .avi would have the MPlayer file icon.
Now in Mavericks, I have noticed that file types have whatever icons they have. Changing the default app to open them doesn't change their icon.
This is mostly a cosmetic issue but I used to appreciate being able to see at a glance what I was getting into when double-clicking a file that had the file icon for MS Office or TextWrangler or Quicktime Player, etc. Now if it has a file icon associated with... whatever app... it can open in something else. So I have to pause, look at the extension then try to remember which app will open.
Again, like I said, not a tremendous issue but something that happens sufficiently frequently that I miss the old way...
I am wondering if it's a setting I don't know about, or that I messed something up?
I did a clean install to Mavericks because of persistent bugs since the upgrade and that seemed to clear up the bigger functionality issues... so I don't think it's a holdover from my old installs.
I would appreciate any advice on the matter.
    Thanks.

The only thing I can think of is that you might have made an error when you added your chapter markers in FCE. There is a specific procedure that you must follow. You might try resetting your chapter markers again and see if that cures the problem.

  • Change default app for .dvdmedia files (Finder now treats them as folders)

I need to change .dvdmedia files to open up with an app and not to show up in Finder as a folder as it currently does. How do I do that?
There isn't anymore the usual drop-down menu for Open with... in Get Info dialog window since Finder now treats .dvdmedia files as folders. This happened when I was trying to change the default app for them to something else but the "Open with" section kept showing Finder and when I actually selected the Finder once it started to treat these files as folders. Now I don't know how to get back.
    Thanks!

This tip further down the other discussion worked (the 2. part of it): https://discussions.apple.com/message/17531236#17531236
I'm still missing icons for three of my .dvdmedia files and I can only have DVD Player app be the default app but at least I got the files back to files instead of folders.

"1. Open TextEdit (or some text editor), create a small text file and save it.
    2. Right-click on the text file, and choose "Get Info".
    3. Under Name & Extension, change the extension to ".dvdmedia". Hit Enter to save this change.
    4. Under Open With, the associated program should be showing VLC. Select DVD Player instead, and save that change.2

  • TextEdit problems: causes spinning ball/freezes, can't make it default app

I'm having some serious problems with, of all things, TextEdit. On an iMac running 10.4.11 with TextEdit v. 1.4 (the standard version for Tiger), I've been having the following two major issues:
    1. About once per day, or at least once every two days, for absolutely no perceivable reason, while typing in TextEdit, I get the "spinning beach ball"; the same pattern happens every time: I wait about 6 minutes for the beach ball to stop spinning, then I try to "save" my open document; this causes another six-minute spin/wait, after which it saves. Then I try to "Quit" Textedit, and after another six-minute spin, it finally quits. Then, any successive action on my part -- clicking an application icon in the dock, or doing command-option-escape to force quit things, or basically anything at all, causes the spinning ball to return, and this time it will not go away. I've waited as long as two hours, and it just keeps spinning. Command-option-escape does nothing -- no response. Nor does command-period, or anything I could think of. The only way out of the freeze is to press the power button and turn off the computer. Terrible!
This ONLY happens when I am working in TextEdit -- no other application causes the problem. And it only happens when I have an unsaved TextEdit document topmost on the screen. It has happened at least 30 times now, consistently, so it's not a one-time glitch. It has even happened when TextEdit was the ONLY application running -- so it couldn't be another application causing the problem. I had thought that "Classic" was causing the problem, because I often have Classic running to use a legacy OS9 application, but even when I restarted the computer and did not ever launch Classic, I still got the TextEdit-freeze problem.
    2. None of my TextEdit documents have TextEdit as their default launch application. Yes, I know about single-clicking the file, pressing "command-I" and in the Info box changing the "Open With" application to "TextEdit," and also then clicking on "change all" so that all similar files are opened with the same application. When I attempt this, it apparently makes the change, but in fact nothing happens: even after making the change, double-clicking the files does not launch TextEdit. In fact, it launches nothing at all, because when I check command-I again, the launch application has reverted to either "None", or to something mysterious called "ams1108.html", which not only is not an application, but it doesn't even exist on my computer (I searched for it).
HOWEVER, if TextEdit is already running, then when I double-click on any of my text documents, they will then open in TextEdit. But if TextEdit is not currently running, they won't open in it.
This applies to any file that has a visible or hidden "txt" or "rtf" or other normal TextEdit-compatible extension. Basically, any text file.
What is going on? I thought TextEdit was the most stable, most reliable application in all of Apple-dom. And I've been using it for years and years, but this problem has only recently started in the past couple months. I have no memory of making any changes to my computer that could have precipitated the change. Also: are these two problems related to each other?
I really don't know what to do. Any suggestions for fixing this problem would be appreciated. (And no, I don't have the original 10.4 install disks, so I can't re-install TextEdit, unless it can be downloaded somewhere). Thanks.

OK, Carolyn, I wrote down all my prefs (glad I did), trashed the prefs file, restarted, relaunched TextEdit, reset all my preferences to my liking (which had reverted to default settings), quit TextEdit. Then I tried double-clicking some text files -- and the same problem (#2 above) persists. None of my TextEdit or text files have TextEdit as the default launch application -- they're still all either "None" or "ams1108.html". And, as before, if I try to change it to "TextEdit" in the file's info box, then click on "change all," it does not work: not only does it not change all the text files to be TextEdit, but clicking "change all" will cause the file in question to revert to "None" or "ams1108.html". However, if I only change the default app for that one file to TextEdit, and don't click "change all," then it will stick -- for now at least. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if after a restart they all changed back to "None.")
The short assessment is: trashing the prefs did NOT fix problem #2 above. It may or may not have fixed problem #1 -- hard to tell immediately, since the only way to find out is the use TextEdit for two days.
So, setting aside problem #1 for now: any suggestions for fixing problem #2 (default app can't be changed to TextEdit by clicking "change all")? I have thousands and thousands of TextEdit files I use, so changing them all manually one-by-one isn't feasible. Thanks.

  • 8.1 Enterprise : dont install default apps, speed up first logon on domain?

Looking to do the following on Windows 8.1 Enterprise (joined to domain)
    1) stop the "hi", "we're setting things up for you", "setting up apps" messages. Trying to deploy hundreds of tablets and first logon for each user to the tablets is SLOWWWW because 8.1 is taking all this time to setup apps
we don't want and will never use. example (weather, people, skydrive, photos, maps, reading list, etc)
    2) if no way to stop the messages mentioned above, is there a way to set via group policy or other tweaks/modifications to not even install those default apps in (1)??

    Hi,
You can try to remove the built-in Windows 8.1 applications when creating a Windows 8.1 image, then deploy Windows 8.1.

YouTube was removed with iOS 6. That was part of the Restore

Are you using WI-Fi sync when you get this message? You Restored with iTunes so I assume you have access to the device settings in iTunes. Try to sync with iTunes

  • How do I change the default app for opening a file;

If I right click on a file in finder, it tells me what the default app for opening the file is.  it also gives me a short list of other apps.
I would like to change the defaults for several file types, and also delete one app from the short list and add a different one.
    How do I do this?
    thanks

    You could try this:
    - right-click (tap with 2 fingers on the apple trackpad) on a file you want to open in openoffice
    - move the cursor over "open with". You should see the default app, then some suggestions, then app store, then at the end, "other...".  Select "other..."
    - find openoffice in your applications folder and select it  (if it is dimmed, change "enable: " from "recommended applications" to "all applications", then you can select "openoffice")
    - check "always open with"
    - then, click "open".  The file will open in openoffice and from now on, openoffice will be the default application to open the type of file you just opened.  You should also see the icon of all files of the same type change to the openoffice file icon.
This is supposed to work, but that's not always the case, especially when the default app happens to be an Apple app.  If you don't want to use that Apple app, delete it (or move it elsewhere if you want a backup). That can help.
    Good luck!

  • How do I set Preview to be the default app for opening ALL pdf's?

I have both Preview and Acrobat Professional on a Macbook Air running Mountain Lion.
I don't see an option if I get info on Preview to set it as the default app for all PDF's.
Where can I set this?  I only use Acrobat on occasion for form fill-in but prefer to use Preview.
    thanks

Looks like I got it to work by selecting a document and setting in get info.  For some reason it was not working before.
    never mind

  • Default apps

I have a question that I'm pretty sure the answer is "can't", but how do I make the Gmail, Mailbox (still waiting 450,000 people in front of me ), Google Maps, and Mercury Browser my default apps? Meaning when I wanna share an app via email, how do I make it pull up gmail rather than iOS mail? Or clicking a link in email and letting it automatically open in Mercury?
If I can't make these things happen, other than the obvious Apple won't allow it, why is it not possible. Why won't Apple allow it?
    Lastly,
How do I request this feature for future iOS releases.
I think if a developer within the Maps, Email, or browser category, 'requested' this functionality (to be the default) they should go under a more rigorous screening process by Apple to allow this to happen. If they pass Apples screening process and Apple deems them worthy enough to be the default app, they should allow it.
I don't know, just my opinion I guess.
Anyway, if you guys know of a way to make these my defaults without jailbreak, please let me know.
If there's not a way, what's the best way to live in iOS and use these other apps? For example, I want to share a car I found on autotrader with a friend. How do I get that email link to send him? The only way I can think of doing it is sending the email to myself, then forwarding it to him from the Gmail app.
The other thing that bothers me is it'll notify me twice, so my Gmail app will say there's a new email and my iOS mail will notifiy me there's an email. If I turn off mail in the settings for gmail, then I have to deal with not being able to use the gmail at all in my mail app so sending emails from a share function is completely lost.
    *sigh*
    Any help would be appreciated.

Lame! There has to be a work around for furture releases. They can take safari off of the secure section or root directory of iOS and make it a downloadable app from the app store and then make it so when you click a link from say an email it brings up a pop up of the browsers installed and you just tap the one you want to open it in.
    I bet there's a way.
