Default apps in Mail

After installing SL mail is changing my incoming attachments. Word file becomes Texteditor file. It also happens with outgoing mail. Does anyone know how to change this?

Do you have MS Word on your computer, and if so, what version?
- Yes, I have MS word (2004). I never had any problems receiving or sending Word attachments in Mail.
Can you find a Word doc file on your computer, in a folder, that has the correct .doc extension? Are these files .doc or .docx initially?
- I have thousand of Word files on my computer. All with the .doc extension.
I guess somehow in SL the default app. for opening text (Word) files is now Texteditor. Off course I can open the file in Word with "right click" but it is stupid.

  • Don't Want Mail App as a Default app

If I am answering an email on yahoo or hotmail or gmail and I click a "mailto" link, Mail pops up as the default app as opposed to me being able to respond inside whatever I am presently using. How do I keep this from happenning? Thanks for the help to all who respond to this.

    Ernie,
    Thanks for your reply.
Well I am not trying to use any e-mail clients at this moment. All I am doing is using hotmail, or yahoo mail for e-mail. This little problem happens only when I click on an embedded link inside of an email that I recieved, that is prompting me to repond via email, i.e. "click here to email tech support". If I do this the Mail client in OS X comes popping up when all I wanted was the "compose email" section of yahoo or hotmail to actually come up so I can type the email. Does this help clarify my issue? Thanks again for your help.

  • My Iphone 4 won't open default apps like safari or mail. it will start to load and close back to home screen.

It is just a 4, but recently won't open standard apps like app store, mail, or safari. tried hard reset. found help saying to download an app, but the app store won't load either.

Try this procedure to be sure of a proper restart.
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)
I would also try: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

  • Default apps

I have a question that I'm pretty sure the answer is "can't", but how do I make the Gmail, Mailbox (still waiting 450,000 people in front of me ), Google Maps, and Mercury Browser my default apps? Meaning when I wanna share an app via email, how do I make it pull up gmail rather than iOS mail? Or clicking a link in email and letting it automatically open in Mercury?
If I can't make these things happen, other than the obvious Apple won't allow it, why is it not possible. Why won't Apple allow it?
    Lastly,
How do I request this feature for future iOS releases.
I think if a developer within the Maps, Email, or browser category, 'requested' this functionality (to be the default) they should go under a more rigorous screening process by Apple to allow this to happen. If they pass Apples screening process and Apple deems them worthy enough to be the default app, they should allow it.
I don't know, just my opinion I guess.
Anyway, if you guys know of a way to make these my defaults without jailbreak, please let me know.
If there's not a way, what's the best way to live in iOS and use these other apps? For example, I want to share a car I found on autotrader with a friend. How do I get that email link to send him? The only way I can think of doing it is sending the email to myself, then forwarding it to him from the Gmail app.
The other thing that bothers me is it'll notify me twice, so my Gmail app will say there's a new email and my iOS mail will notifiy me there's an email. If I turn off mail in the settings for gmail, then I have to deal with not being able to use the gmail at all in my mail app so sending emails from a share function is completely lost.
    *sigh*
    Any help would be appreciated.

Lame! There has to be a work around for furture releases. They can take safari off of the secure section or root directory of iOS and make it a downloadable app from the app store and then make it so when you click a link from say an email it brings up a pop up of the browsers installed and you just tap the one you want to open it in.
    I bet there's a way.

  • Default settings for mail attachements

I am using entourage as my primary mail account-how do I set Word, Excel, and Power Point as the as the default applications for their respective file attachments in mail?

Hi wagdad, and a warm welcome to the forums!
The way to set Default Apps to open certain kinds of files is to use the Finder.
Find a file type you want, do a Get Info on it, look for the "Open with" menu, click on it and select the Application, then click on "Change All" and close the Get Info Window. All

  • Preview.app's "Mail Document" & Entourage?

    Preview.app's "Mail Document" & Entourage?
Has anyone noticed that Apple's Preview.app will allow you to email a PDF as an attachment, but it will only work with Apple's Mail.app. Of course I don't use Mail.app, I use Entourage 2008 (Exchange client etc). My OS and Mail.app all agree that my default email application is Entourage 2008, not Mail.app. But Preview.app won't play along.
Has anyone else noticed this undocumented limitation?
I love Preview, and I'm glad I don't have to jack with Acrobat Reader, er, Adobe Reader, anymore (at least for basic PDF functionality).
I cracked open Preview.app's plist preference files hoping to find a "mail with..." value that could be tweaked. No luck.

Agreed - this is annoying. I just toyed around with this program (http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/) but couldn't find any obvious/easy fix.
This is one area where Windows, dare I say it, does better, but only if the application author has coded a File, Send To.. menu item. I get the feeling that the OS X "Services" menu can be set up to do this using an Applescript but I don't know how.
Would be really good if there was a fix for this - I'm an Exchange/Entourage user so have very little choice.

  • Make Word default app for .doc files

How can I make Word the default app for .doc files? I don't want Pages to launch when I clip on a word doc attachment in an email using Entourage.

I notice you say you're having this problem when you open a document attached to an e-mail within Entourage, correct? If so, this may not be an Apple issue. Check Entourage's settings to see if it has an option that specifies what application opens.
Also, do these files have an extension? If not, that could be causing problems. If there's also no extension, the Mac could get confused, and it may not have any basis for allowing you to Change All. (Change all what?) I could not duplicate this behavior by e-mailing myself a file with no extension, but if a Windows machine were involved, that might change... or maybe not.

  • All default apps crashes!!!!

i have an iphone4...but for no apparent reason...almost all the default apps like safari, mail, youtube, photos and camera crashes whenever i open them...i tried rebooting but they still crash...can somebody...anybody help me?cos this *****!-.-

There is no such thing as "rebooting" on iOS. Try to Reset your device.
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears (ignore the Slide to Power Off option that shows up first).
If that doesn't help, do a Restore.

  • Default apps aren't opening

    Hi,
27" iMac, late 2009, just updated to latest Yosemite. After update, my default apps are failing to launch. I can still use any third-party software installed (spotify, chrome etc), but when I click (for example) mail, reminders, safari, messages etc. they each bounce once in the dock and then nothing more happens. Rebooted twice, made no difference.
    Any ideas?

You probably ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below. If you use any iWork applications, you may need to delete them and redownload them from the App Store.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Windows 8.1 default app is not working

However, several of them still refuse to function even after the reinstall, mostly it sees to
be the apps that came with Windows (Mail, Calendar, People, Music, and Video).  I say mostly because Games would not work either but after I uninstalled and reinstalled it it started to work again, so it is not all the defaults apps, just some.
The problem is different now though, instead of saying they can't start it is almost like they launch but immediately minimize to the desktop.  You can click their icon on the task bar and they well jump to full screen and then right back to the task
bar.Has this been the experience of anyone else and can anyone provide me with guidance on correcting this please?

    Hi,
There might several causes for this situation, an app that is not updated, a windows firewall block, you can find the following way to fix this.
Keeping your app up to date is one way to help keep them working. You can do this by making sure that automatic app updates are turned on in the Windows Store.
By default, some apps are blocked by Windows Firewall to help make your PC more secure. To work properly, you might need to allow an app to receive info through the firewall in the way listed in the link below:
If you continue experiencing problems with an app, or if you're unable to open the Store, you can run the app troubleshooter for help:

  • 8GB vs. 16 GB - How Much Space Taken by Default Apps?

I plan to use the Touch mainly for calendar, contacts, task (Data-Wiz) and browsing web and e-mail. Maybe a few songs, but focus is on getting organized through access to above info which will be synced with Outlook 2007 on Windows desktop.
Question - how much space do the default apps take up?
My Outlook pst file is 70 meg.
E-mail is 328 meg, but is the e-mail downloaded to the Touch or just viewed online?
From what I know now, the 8GB Touch seems more than satisfactory in terms of capacity. What are your thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Mark

i don't think that was the question Mark, but i think the answer is a similar one.
as far as i know the OS software (which is basically all the default apps, and is the same for all available sizes) takes up something like a GB of space, so 7GB out of an 8GB, and presumably 15GB of a 16GB iPod touch is left for the user to put their things on it.
when you add details to it, it obviously takes up more space, but not much. (i'm afraid i'm not sure enough to be more accurate).
really the major consideration for which size to go for, is how much music/podcasts/video you plan to keep on it. most apps only take up a few MB, though there are a few which are much larger.

  • Filevault, and osx resetting default apps

    Hi...
First off, I have a Mac book pro running OSX 10.5.1 and have filevault enabled (as it is a company computer, and is required) however I (and my collegues) are seeing that OSX appears to forget all about which apps to use for which type of files (ie. I use acrobat for PDFs, textmate for .txt, default browser is firefox, mail client is thunderbird etc etc.) but after a reboot all this is forgotten and I need to reassociate everything again.
Is there really no good fix for this? Or did someone forget to test the filevault app before launching it in leopard? I have been looking around the web and have found indications that it is filevault thats causing the problem, but nowhere does it say anything about a good solution for this.
I usually put the MBP into sleep mode, and then it doesn't forget the default apps, but once in a while a reboot is necessary (OSX do crash, quite often actually).
    Solutions and recommendations are welcome.
    Regards
    Thomas

Turn off FileVault and see if the problem continues. If not, delete the filevault sparseimage. Once that's done, reset the LaunchServices database as described in http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031215144430486 but with using this command:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
which changed from what's posted WRT Tiger. The command is all one line, just copy and paste it. If all problems are gone, restart FileVault.

  • Default apps keep getting changed back to Apple's

    Hi all,
I use Thunderbird instead of Mail, Firefox instead of Safari and Adium instead of iChat. But, there is this very annoying thing that keeps happening. After restarting the computer, the default apps are autonotsomagicallyatall changed back to the Apple applications! So yes, i set Firefox as my default browser and use it in that way, but after a restart I'm back with safari, each and every time!
What could going on and how could I fix this?

  • Updated my mac to mountain lion 10.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install? Can anyone help me?

updated my mac to mountain lion 10.7.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install saying that I need to see developer. Whenever I try to open my appstore, mail or facetime it says that the programmes need to be installed and might not be compatible with this version of mac operating system. Can anyone help me?

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.
Here's a thread that helped me with iPhoto:

  • APP store,Mail,QT,Preview etc quit every time I try to open them

A few weeks ago i created a new account for the other half on my iMac. At the time we had problems with permissions etc and fixed all of that.. It has been working fine but in the last few days the original (admin) account has stopped working properly.
App store, mail, quick time all crash instantly.
Safari is opening but not functioning properly... pages not loading fully, hyper links not present, mouse functions not working etc.
Everything works fine on the new account still so i know its related to the user ID.
    I have...
    repaired permissions and discs
re-installed OS 3 times -I have not been able to let it finish on the load screen (with the apple logo) after the final re-start as it kept getting stuck at approx half way each time for hours. first time i killed it it came up after restart saying it was finishing the installation and all finished fine.
I have tried setting the admin rights against the other account for the **** of it and removing from the other one...
BUT I am still where i started
