Default Brightness On 23' Cinema Display

I'm attempting to calibrate my monitor (purchased six months ago). The calibration software (Datacolor Spyder 3 Elite)recommends setting the brightness to the monitor's "default" level before calibrating. There's no reset button or key combination that I can find to do that, but the user manual says I can disable the brightness control (which I assume means it gets set to default) by clicking on Apple > System Preferences > Displays > Options. However, there's no Options tab in the Displays preference window. I thought I was on the right track when I read a suggestion on disabling the power button by holding down the Command + Shift keys when clicking on Displays, but this didn't get me to an Options tab either.
How do I return to the default brightness setting?
Any help is appreciated.
Don

Most 3rd party displays have many settings that can affect the calibration. The "brighness" setting doesn't always mean the same thing. That's why it is recommended to set everything to default.
On a Cinema Display, you can only adjust the backlight intensity. The default setting means nothing. Just set it to a level that matches your environment and calibrate.

  • 27" Cinema Display - No Brightness Control

I have read over all the threads here and the internet.  I have an iMac (black back) that my 27" Cinema display is connected to.  USB and Displayport are both connected.  Everything appears just fine.  However, I cannot adjust the brightness on the Cinema display.  I have tried everything.  I even hooked it up to my Macbook Pro early 2011 model.  Still the same issue.  There is no brightness slider.  The slider only appears for the native display only.  Never the Cinema display.  What am I missing?
    Running Lion on both machines.

USB cable is connected.  It's not an SMC issue.  I have tried this on 3 iMac's and 1 2011 MacBook Pro.  Same issue on all machines.  Cinema display does NOT have brightness control.  Only the native screen.
Tried on OSX Lion 10.7 and  Snow Leopard 10.6.  Tried loading the 1.0 Cinema display firmware update.  Won't install on Lion and states it's not require on Snow Leopard 10.6.
Any other suggestions out there?  The display is full brightness it seems and it's annoying as crap.

  • 10.5.2 and santa rosa mbp cinema display issue

not only did the update hang... It took disconnecting everything and reseting the pram just to get it past the initial white screen.. once it booted the display on the mbp flickered like 7 times seemingly adjusting it's color profile over and over. I plugged in my 30 inch and it appeared to be working fine.. but then i noticed that the brightness of the display on the santa rosa wasn't responding at all.. and neither were the keyboard keys that usually control the brightness of the cinema display.
So I decided to reboot.. well. what do you know, won't reboot again unless I unplug not only the cinema display, but the firewire and usb extensions that go with it, and my fire800 external... I'm not sure which it is as I'm not going to test it risking anything.. it's something though.. it seems like a power issue... and I'm worried it could get worse.. if i don't restart and unplug everything the fans speed up all the way and it just sits..
I am not going to reboot for a while now.. hopefully until there is a solution.. help?
and not to mention I was hoping for a fix with 10.5.2.. try calibrating your color in expert mode.. there's not even a button on the right slider.. I was told that this in their database, and escalated by two separate geniuses.. over 2 months ago..

    not any ideas?

  • Apple Cinema Display Dimming On Bootcamp Startup (found a fix!)

Hey guys I recently bought an Apple 27 inch Cinema Display to go along with my 15 inch Macbook Pro. Prior to purchasing the display I had installed Windows 7 Professional on my Macbook and used bootcamp to play games etc. I recently had to delete my bootcamp partition and reinstall it (ran out of space and didn't want to deal with winclone/making an image of my system). Everything went perfectly fine except the cinema display would always dim on startup and there was no way to adjust the brightness.
I talked to Applecare multiple times and they came up with zero solutions, but I found a fix myself. If you go into MSCONFIG, while in Windows 7, and turn off bootcamp services from starting at the launch of Windows 7 it doesn't dim the screen and everything works completely fine. I'm making this post to show people how to easily fix this problem and so Apple can fix whatever is making the bootcamp services dim the brightness of the cinema displays.
The problem is indeed 100% caused by the bootcamp services. If I start the computer without bootcamp services running there are no brightness issues. As soon as you open bootcamp services it instantly dims the screen and have to go back to MacOSX to fix the brightness.
Anyone have a clue why bootcamp services wouild do such a thing?
Thanks for your time, I hope this helps some people and I really hope apple looks into this problem.
P.S. Please discuss this topic and add any other ideas on hotfixing this problem.
ADDITIONAL INFO: I am using Windows 7 Professional 64x.

I traced the problem to hardware - I'm running an older Apple ADC 23" Digital Cinema display, so use and ADC to DVI adapter  - because of this there is a USB "pigtail"  which carries the USB from the rear ports on the monitor into the PC. This works fine in MacOS, but boot into Windows (and I tried XP running NOT in BootCamp and Windows 7 running IN BootCamp) and it seems to hunt and search for this "generic hub" (the USBs in the monitor) and upon not finding them appears to send some kind of signal to that hub, disengaging it or whatever, and dimming the screen. In Windows XP this happens right after the login screen appears, but in Windows 7 it won't happen until AFTER you log in (always thinking "Gee! Maybe this.... time....  ah.... ^%$#@!").
I tested my theory by using WinADC (the add on software that adds brightness controls for Apple ADC monitors to Windows XP - only 32 bit btw) on the XP machine - every time I started up WITHOUT that extra USB connection I was fine. When I started up with it... DIM happened. Then I tried starting it up without it plugged in.... FINE... then plugged it in AFTER full startup and loing... DIM happened. Plugging and unplugging it in in Windows would sometimes re-reveal the added extension for brightness (WinADC) so you could see how the USB was being searched not just for simple connections but for the brightness CONTROLS that are built into the monitors hub it seems.
So, I'm going to try your suggestion here, turning off Boot Camp services, but, for others if that doesn't work: Start up in mac OS, set your brightness, then UNPLUG any additional USB that is being run into the monitor and startup in PC - should be good to go.

  • Cinema Display too bright upon waking up

Whenever my cinema display wakes up from sleep, the screen is really bright (ie washed out). It'll stay that way until I open up the Displays control panel, then it will reset to the correct profile. It's not a critical issue but an irritation. Anyone else experiencing this problem/have a solution?

I have the exact same problem on a 30" cinema display. I've tried to adjust color settings in Sys prefs, downloaded DarkAdapted (which works well with the ACD but completely messes with my second display colors apart from being a hassle to launch it every time) and that's all I could do about it so far. Frankly my eyes hurt every night I use it, I even prefer to use only my 15" MBP because I feel it's doing damage to my eyes. This is just ridiculous, it's wonderful to have a bright 2560x1600 screen when you are working open air in a Hawaiian beach but is it so hard to make the screen darker when you are an urban night worker?
APPLE PLEASE WE NEED NATIVE SOLUTIONS!!! (before I get blind or sell it on ebay if possible!)

  • On/off Button and brightness buttons don't work in the Apple Cinema Display

I write you because I bought a new apple cinema display 20" a month ago and I have problems with the on and off button and the brightness buttons. Thew work sometimes. I think that te problem is windows XP but I am not sure. My graphics card is a ATI RADEON X800 GT Gecube 256 Mb DDR2.
Would yo mind telling me how can repair that? If I need something to repair o it is better to buy the new windows to avoid that problem.

Thank you very much. I didn't know this driver.
But the problem was when I was installing this driver, Windows said that it's imcompatible with windows XP.Is this normal? o I need to download a special edition for windows xp.

  • Apple Cinema Display 23" brightness issue while using with Microsoft Vista

    Hello there,
I have the following issue and was wondering if someone has an idea what the reason is or what can I do to fix this:
I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display running with a MacPro 2,8 GHz. When I switch to PC using BootCamp 2.1 with Windows Vista Service Pack 1 32bit the screen becomes extremely dark.
At first, on the PC side, the display has the correct brightness but after two seconds it switches to a very low brightness setting.
When I go back to the Mac side the brightness setting on my Cinema Display has changed to the lowest point.
I also have a MacBookPro, with Microsoft XP installed also using BootCamp (I cannot find the version of this Boot Camp, but it is an earlier version) to change to PC. In XP, there is a driver installed that allows me to use a slider on the PC to control the monitor brightness. But with Vista this slider is nonexistent.
I already tried changing the graphic's card NVIDIA 8800 driver to see if I can manipulate the brightness on the monitor. I realized there is brigthness slider on the Nvidia driver, but when you make brighter, the colors just get messed up, and the brightness stays as dark as before.
We have lately upgraded to Snow Leopard and had installed Spyder on the Mac side to create a monitor profile for the Cinema Display. I already deleted the profile to see if there is a change. Nothing. I already went back in time on my PC (Restore Point), also nothing.
Could I download a driver for Vista, so that I have a brightness slider on the PC side, so that I can adequately change the brightness to its correct setting.
It is amazing how the lack of correct brightness in a monitor, can ruin your entire working day! Very frustrating!
It would be greatly appreciated if someone has a solution for this issue! Thanks a lot!
    Emil

Okay, I came across a thread that implies there is a problem with using the Apple ADC-to-DVI adapter to attach the older "acrylic" 23" Cinema Display to a Mac Pro DVI graphics card. Basically, the workaround is to NOT use the USB part of the adapter (disconnect it).
    1) In OS X, set the desired display brightness.
    2) Disconnect the USB cable coming from the converter to the Mac.
    3) Restart into Windows.
The brightness setting should now remain as it was under OS X.
Confirmed to work on my Mac Pro v1,1 (dual 2.66 Core 2 Duo) with nVidia GeForce 7300 GT video card running Windows 7 x64.
Link here: <http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=790910> for credit to resolution.
Of course, you lose the functionality of the 2-port built-in USB hub in the Cinema Display, but an external USB hub can make up for that.

  • Select Default iSight Cam with Dual LED Cinema Displays

    Hello
I have two 27in LED Cinema Displays, both of which have iSight Cameras.  When I try to facetime, by default, the right monitor camera turns on, but I want to use the left camera.
How do I select which camera on which monitor I want to use?  Both monitors are connected via thunderbolt.  I'm using OS X Mavericks.
    Thanks!

You can try the old trick of first launching a camera app that you do NOT want to use - QuickTimeX > New Movie Recording perhaps - to have it engage the ONE display iSight camera.  After you can see that your camera is engaged with the unwanted app, you can hide that app if desired.  Then launch FaceTime and see if the other connected camera is accessible to FaceTime.
If FaceTime cannot then recognize the second Display iSight, check your System Information utility to see if your Hardware > USB > USB Device Tree recognizes both Display iSights.  If the device tree recognizes only one Display iSight, your lowest cost workaround may be to connect a Mac-compatible webcam to one of your available USB ports so it is recognizable .  The external camera may then be selectable in your FaceTime menu without the two-application trick.

OK, called Apple and solved problem:
In order to have control over the monitor, the USB cable must be connected!
    Learn something new everyday!
I was not using the USB slots on the back of the monitors, so I has never connected the USB cables on the monitor snake to the computer.

  • Controlling Brightness on Dual LED Cinema Displays

I got my mac pro and 2 x LED cinema display yesterday, very pleased with the whole setup (ordered a couple of extensions for the displayport cable after looking around in threads on here too). Something that bugs me a little though is that it seems only possible to control the brightness of the display connected to the graphics card in slot 1. using f1 and f2 adjusts this display's brightness but not the secondary monitor, likewise the system preferences display panel shows a brightness slider for each display, yet both sliders adjust the brightness of the same display.
I assume this is a software issue and will be fixed either in the next build of leopard or in snow leopard, but am just wondering if anyone has found a workaround / some kind of keyboard shortcut I'm missing or anything?

    You are not alone:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1988252&start=0&tstart=0>
There is one report (Filchescat) of it working correctly (apart from the Windows 7 user, whose brightness keys control three 24" displays).
I don't see how Apple can make independent brightness control of external displays work from the computer. The brightness is controlled via the USB cable. Unless each display sends a serial number through both its USB and display ports, how is the computer going to know which USB port corresponds with which display. System profiler doesn't seem to show serial numbers for displays or USB devices.

  • Adjusting brightness with two 24" LED Cinema Displays

I'm wondering if there are any other Mac Pro users out there with two 24" LED Cinema Displays? If so, are you able to adjust the brightness of both displays? For me, no matter which brightness slider I adjust in System Preferences, only the brightness of one of the displays is adjusted.

  • Controlling brightness on two 24" LED Cinema Displays

I have an 8-core Mac Pro from this summer with two NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 cards and two 24" LED Cinema Displays. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1, and when I try to adjust the brightness, the slider on both panels controls only one monitor. I therefore can't adjust the brightness of one of my displays. • Dual 20" Apple Cinema Displays brightness control

    Hello all,
Finally added a 2nd 20" Cinema Display to my setup. When I first got the new display hooked up (used from eBay, but in great condition) I noticed that it was pretty dark so I went to adjust the brightness... but the buttons on the side of the display didn't work and there was no brightness slider on the preferences pane for that display. The primary display DID have the brightness control.
Does anyone know what might be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been trying to figure out why I couldn't change the brightness on the 20" cinema display connected to my MacBook Pro and now I know the reason. Thanks for this question and answer.
Shouldn't such a simple and necessary thing be made clear in the MacBook Pro manual?
