Default browser in mail

My default browser is firefox all the time EXCEPT from within a mail message. If, for example, I highlight a word and right click, then choose "search in google", Safari opens the google search page. All the settings I can find to make firefox default are chosen. Is there something I'm missing. Thanks for helping a Windows switcher.

You are not alone. This happens to me as well, and its annoying. I end up with two browsers running instead of one.
And yes, my settings are all to Firefox, links work ok.
Did you find a solution?
(Running 10.5.1 still. Maybe 10.5.2 fixes this?)

  • How do I setup Safari to be my default browser for Mail?

I am using an iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2, Safari is 8.0.3, Mail is 8.2.  Somehow, awhile ago, I set up my default browser as Firefox 35.0.1, and have been satisfied with it.  Lately I have become unhappy with the way it responds to some clicks.  I would like to try Safari, though I might miss some features of Firefox.

Open System Preferences > General then select Safari from the Default web browser:  pop up menu.

  • How to set Firefox as default browser for Mail

When I click on links in Mail, they open in Explorer. So, I trashed Explorer, and now when I click on links I get "Mail was unable to open the URL. No associated application could be found."

Launch Safari and open its preferences. You set the default browser there.
Not very logical is it? I think a Microsoft plant came up with that one.

  • Default browser for Mail

    Hi everyone,
I have Safari and FireFox browsers installed and use both but FireFox mostly. Is there a way I can make FireFox the default browser when I click on links in an e-mail.
I have looked in Mail preferences and can not see anything that helps.
Thanks in advance for any answers,
    Alan

    Hi Alan
In the Firefox Preferencess > Main, at the bottom, Check to see if Firefox is the default browser, and click on Check Now. If it isn't then you can select it to be, and Mail will use whatever is the default browser.

  • Setting default browser for Mail's contextual menu items

I use Firefox as my default browser. In "Safari>General>Default Web Browser" I have it set to Firefox and URL links within Mail trigger Firefox as expected.
However, if I right-click within an email message on some text and select 'Search in Google' it opens in Safari regardless of the default browser indicated in the Safari preferences.
Anybody know how to fix this? It's very annoying.
    Dual 2.0 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
I have been searching for the cause of this failure, but have not found much. It may relate to some problems with Contextual Menu Items, discussed within the article at the link below, but I do not know for sure:
    http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2004/05/28/cm_pt1.html
and may relate to some incompleteness in Firefox, rather than OSX, per se. The contextual menu items are separate from the default preferences, I believe.
Btw, while I like some aspects of a Google search with Firefox, the fact that PDF links are downloaded, rather than opened in the browser, make me prefer Safari for searches. Perhaps there is a preference to cure this problem, but I have not looked very hard for it.

  • Changing the Default browser in Mail 2.1

When using Mail 2.1, if I click on a tag that requires a web page, Mail automatically opens Internet Explorer as my default web browser. How do I change the default browser, Internet Explorer, to Safari.

  • How do I change my default browser in apple mail to firefox

I would like to change my default browser in (Lion) Apple mail from Safari to Firefox - I don't like the small Safari screen that pops up and I'm also finding the full screen in Safari a bit of a challenge

So - 43 months - yes, FORTY-THREE MONTHS,  and this still has no answer!
We're all on Yosemite now, and still Apple Mail invokes Safari whenever you try to search on content. Safari's preferences are set to Firefox, Firefox's preferences are (of course) set to Firefox. And there is no setting in Mail to specify a preference.
Come on Apple - we thought you were way too cool to use Microsoft's dirty 'browser monopoly' tricks! Please, please let us have access to a proper browser. Please? Pretty please?
Or do I have to trash Mail and switch to Thunderbird?

  • Firefox is my default browser, yet a direct e-mail link brings up IE. I use Hotmail for all my mail, Can I change something so a direct e-mail links brings up hotmail in firefox rather than IE?

    Please post info:
    In Thunderbird

Please state which account is set as default.
It will appear at the top of your Folder Pane and Account Settings.
Go into Tools > account Settings
    select the top mail account
    click on 'Account Actions'
Is the 'set as default' greyed out? This means it is already set as default.

  • Why won't Links open from e-mail if Firefox is default browser

I still have this problem and now it is starting to affect the browsers functionality and useability. When Firefox is my default browser any link outside of Firefox (like in my e-mail) won't open which is becoming a nuisance. I am running Windows 7 which may be the cause of the problem via a setting but I can't locate the needle in the haystack or it may have happened at a Firefox update. Firefox has been my favorite and only browser since Netscape 1.0 but if I can't resolve this problem I will have to switch to another which I really don't want to do. Help!!!

Thanks for your solution jsher. After updating firefox my links stopped working. I checked all settings and associations but nothing fixed the problem. I had to go into Firefox, options, advanced, and use "check now" that firefox is the default browser. Fixed problem and I can carry on using firefox.

  • When I click a link in email client (apple mail), it does not open in firefox. I have checked both Firefox and Safari and Firefox is the default browser.

When clicking a link in either apple mail or even from a word document, nothing happens.

Try to redo the default browser and make another browser like Safari the default and then let Firefox do it again.

  • 3.6.13 OS MAC 10.6.6 - cannot open url within Mail with Firefox as default browser

new iMac (March '10) - no problem til last week - as above - when
Firefox is my default browser cannot open url's form within Mail.
OK when I change over to Safari - but going back to Firefox same issue.
Firefox browser opens but the page does not load....
    any suggestions?

I have the same issue. One interesting piece of info is if you quit FireFox (go to dock > right click on firefox icon > quit) Mail will then launch the link into FireFox properly. Somehow though users actions must cause it to fail again. My wife uses our iMac more than I do for email, so I haven't been able to re-create what she is doing to lose the Mail > Firefox functionality. Almost sounds like an OS X bug??

  • Cannot open url within Mail with Firefox as default browser

just started happening - Safari as default browser does work - but changing back to Firefox as my default - browser opens but doesn't open page.
    any ideas would be appreciated

Works here, but you should quit Mail before changing in the Safari Preferences, and then relaunch Mail so it will pick up the change.

  • Netscape mail wont use firefox as default browser even though set up as default browser in firefox.

I want to continue using Netscape Mail 7.2, but when I click on a web link I want it to use Firefox browser. I set Firefox as default browser in Firefox options, but it is not staying set when I look again. I don't know if Netscape is resetting it or what.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Stan

I had the same problem, I just forgot how to fix it. I did it once a while ago but just recently the problem had returned. The first link in vineelreddyp's post solved the problem for me.
Just as an FYI for people, when OSX does software updates it includes Safari updates. When it completes a Safari update it resets all the Safari settings (they recently upgraded to Safari 5.0), including default browser.
So anyway, FYI about that. ;-)

  • I'm new at this. I don't understand what is meant by making Firefox my "default browser." I use gmail and I have to log in, everytime I want to use mail?

I don't even know if there is any interaction between Firefox and gmail. I just know it's a pain every time I want to use mail, I have to log in. I don't have to log in with Internet Explorer. My purpose here is to take advantage of Firefox not being infected with SPAM etc. Where and how do I set Firefox as my default browser, and what are the other advantages? Keep it simple, guys, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

The "default browser" is the one that Windows will use to open links from other applications, or desktop shortcuts. Whether a browser is designated as the default doesn't affect how web pages work ''inside'' the browser.
Sites generally recognize that you're still logged in by setting a cookie. When you first install Firefox, it is configured to accept and retain these cookies. However, there are many ways for cookies to get cleared, including:
    * Settings on the Privacy tab of the Options dialog such as whether to accept cookies and how long they are kept - [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
    * Optional clearing of history at shutdown (although the feature is called clearing history, there are some 10 or more categories of data you can individually choose to clear or keep)
    * Using the private browsing feature - cookies last only as long as the private session
    * Privacy-related add-ons that change how cookies are managed -- your system data doesn't show any of these
    * External security, privacy or system cleaning software
In your case, your "More System Details" shows that you have Firefox set to start automatically in private browsing mode. In this configuration, Firefox doesn't keep any cookies between sessions, so as far as websites are concerned, the next time you visit you're a stranger. One way this could have been set is if you or someone else with access to your computer went into the Privacy Options and set Firefox to "Never remember history".
You'll probably need to turn off automatic private browsing, unless you can find an add-on to store cookies you want to store between private sessions.
