Default Camera Raw settings question

For a long time, I did not understand why do photos in Bridge that were shot in RAW appear satureted for a second and then become dull...as I understand, the first thumbnail isn't made from actual Raw with no settings, but the second one is, so it's not as "pretty".
My question is - is there a way to set the default RAW settings so that images shot in RAW would look like the ones shot in JPG? Because i mostly shoot in RAW+JPG and I'd like the RAW duplicates to look as pretty as JPG ones by default. Is the only option manually setting RAW settings and applying it as a default?
Thanks

The short answer is No.
The longer answer is Nearly, it depends.
The full answer is:
The initial image you see is the integrated thumbnail in the raw file, which is created at capture by the camera using its picture settings. This is not the "correct" version of the image (as there is no right or wrong way to convert raw to jpeg, just different ways). It is the version provided by the camera manufacturer using the chosen picture settings. Some may say it's the correct version, some will disagree. I say that, if you have chosen to shoot raw, you must be disagreeing to an extent.
Adobe's default conversion will not look like the camera's conversion. Adobe has its own idea of how your picture should convert, but it sees it only as a starting point. If you'd rather have a different starting point, closer to the camera's version, you can. Adobe provides Camera profiles designed to approximate the different camera picture settings, like Camera Standard, Camera Neutral, Camera Portrait, etc., and you can use those intead. They are nearer, but not exactly. Find them on the Camera Calibration tab in Camera Raw.
You can make these different settings default by opening a new photo in Camera Raw, changing the camera profile, tweaking any basic exposure settings, and then clicking on the little menu icon on the far right, and select Save New Camera Raw Defaults.
But, again, I suggest that you shouldn't be trying to duplicate the jpeg, otherwise why shoot raw in the first place? Just try to get the default how you think it should look.

  • Bridge freezes when applying camera raw settings to large number of files

    I have a folder with 32,000 frames from a time-lapse project that I'm doing. I'd like to apply the same camera raw adjustments to all of these files, and so follow one of the two methods below - neither of which are working with such a large set of files:
    Method 1:
    Select all files, open in camera raw.
    Apply changes to the first image
    Select all images, then synchronize the changes to all other images.
    Unfortunately selecting "Open in Camera Raw..." just leaves bridge to hang. It's using a lot of memory and processor time, so I would assume it's working, but there's no progress bar or similar to indicate that it is.
    Method 2:
    Open first file in Camera Raw
    Apply all changes, and exit camera raw.
    Select all files in Bridge, right click on one and select "Develop Settings -> Previous Conversion"
    Unfortunately the final step again leaves bridge just thinking. I waited around an hour, closed bridge, but unfortunately when I opened it again there was no sign that it had copied the camera raw settings onto any of the other files. My computer's pretty slow (see below) but it should have written one xmp file in an hour.
    Question:
    Does anyone have any workarounds other than repeating the process 32 times for 1000 images at a time?

    The files are only 2MP each, and I have the same issue when I apply the changes to RAW files and JPG files. The error occurs though before any changes are applied, before the images would need to be recached, as when the error doesn't occur the dialogue box I mentioned pops up asking what to change.
    Your specs sound more then enough I would think. Do you have set the option to Write cache to folders when possible and if so could you uncheck that option?
    I don't have experience with this kind of numbers but I do dump the Bridge cache manually on a regular base (every new cycle it seems to be more stable so more interval in the periods of dumping cache) but my main folder contains usually around 6 to 7 K of DNG files from 21 MP dSLR. This starts caching without problems but takes a few hours before done.
    Can't use the option cache for folder due to a longstanding problem with error message to replace the CacheT file, hence my question about your setting.
    Also I have set the option to previews Always HQ and in the prefs have set the option to build monitor size previews.
    As said, don't know the large numbers but the 2 MP files are very small and it should be possible for Bridge I would think?
    Did you also try to create a new folder and place the files inthere. Or divide them in to three folders for testing?

  • Camera raw settings change while rating stars

    While I rate my images with stars in Bridge, I can see that the Camera Raw settings are changing the preview image as soon as set the stars in the Content panel are set. Why does the preview changes if the thumbnail is already generated? Shouldn't any newly generated thumbnail contain Camera Raw Default Settings as soon as they are displayed? Can anyone please tell me how to set-up Bridge or Camera Raw Preferences correctly in order to generate from the first time the preview images with my Camara Raw Default Development settings? Thank you for any usefull hint.

    This is just a guess, but I would say that is the way it should work.
    If you have Bridge set to HQ thumbs the thumbnails will reflect the current edit of the RAW image.  Since lables are considered an edit (change of metadata), Bridge would have to rebuild the thumbnail to the current version, even though it does not reflect any visual changes.

  • How do you clear the Camera RAW settings?

    When opening a photo in Bridge, the photo opens in it's original state but then Bridge quickly applies settings to it and it looks darker. How do I stop this from happening? Can I easily turn it off and on? I tried Edit>Apply Camera RAW Settings>Clear Camera Raw Settings but it did nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi and tanks for your answer
    I´ve done it . I ´ve put all the settings to zero (brigthness, contrast , expose, etc..) and I´ve saved it as new CR default values, but the images continue "getting worse" (although not the same situation , now they lose all their "strong", i supose cause the zero values)
    In my bridge thumnail i see the image as i taked it, right with the light and the color i want. but in the moment i select with my mouse the image to see it in preview mode, the image "gets worse".

  • Can not find folder to load camera raw presets on MAC.  I have searched and says to drop in the library/application support/adobe/camera raw/settings folder but I do not have this folder or can no locate it. I get as far as lib/appsupoort/adobe/camera raw

    I just made the switch to mac. I am have installed all the new PS6 CC and bridge and I am not trying to add some presets to my  ACR but when I search for the folder to place them it is not there.  From what I researched it says it should be under camera library/application support/adobe/camera raw/settings but I can only get to library/application support/adobe/ and then there are two different camera raw options I have checked both and there are not settings folder. If anyone can help me please thanks

    You want your user library
    Mac(user)/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Settings

  • Where do I find the Camera Raw settings file?

    I've been running Creative Suite 3 on a MacBook Pro. I just bought a Mac Pro so got my disks off the shelf to install on the new machine. That's when I found I have to deactive the programmes on the laptop in order to install them on the tower. (Which strikes me as outrageously restrictive. How many people work on a tower at home and a laptop for the road?)
    Having gone throught the deactivation/activation process, I opened Photoshop to process some NEF files, and then remembered that my Camera Raw settings were somewhere on the laptop - but where ??? I assume there must be a file somewhere, but have not so far been able to find it.
    Any ideas gratefully received.
    Thanks

    By "Camera Raw Settings file", I take it that you are looking for the develop settings for each raw file. These settings can be stored in two ways. The first and most common method is to store them as sidecar *.xmp files in the same directory as the NEFs. The other method is to store them in a centrally located Camera Raw database. One can change these methods via the Edit Preferences menu of either Photoshop or Camera Raw. Further information is here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSD94FB319-761D-4e9a-BC8D-24DF7EBC05B4.html
    The storage location for this central database as well as the storage locations for other settings are shown in this Adobe link:

    Nobody can know. You have not provided even the most basic system info nor any proper version info about ACR and whatever. Eitehr way, ask in the ACR forum.

  • Manipulating Camera Raw settings with javascript

    Is it possible to manipulate the Camera Raw settings with a javascript? I've been looking for info on this and have had no luck finding any.
    What I'm doing is multiple conversions from a single RAW file set at different exposures, brightnesses, sharpnesses, etc.
    Here are the basic steps:
    1. Open RAW file in ACR.
    2. Adjust for a baseline image.
    3. Open image as an object in Photoshop.
    4. Duplicate that object layer and run "edit settings" on this new layer.
    5. Make adjustments ***
    6. Click OK to apply new settings to this layer.
    7. Repeat steps 4-6 on original layer as many times as needed.
    I got everything working as I want, but I'd like to be able to automate step 5 for certain file types so that it will set some of the settings for me without going through the dialog to do this. The settings I'd really like to be able to adjust this way are exposure and brightness and if possible, I'd like to set them in relation to the original layer's settings for those parameters.

    Here is what I had in mind. Note the document is the same size as the raw file. This will place 5 copies of the raw file in the activeDocument, each with a different exposure.
    var rawFile = new File( "~/Desktop/DSC_5396.NEF" );
    var xmpFile = new File( "~/Desktop/DSC_5396.xmp" );
    var exposures = ['-2.0','-1.0','0.0','1.0','2.0'];
    for(var e=0;e<exposures.length;e++){
         setExposure( xmpFile, exposures[e] );
         placeFile( rawFile );
    function setExposure( file, exp ){
         file.open('r');
         file.encoding = "UTF8";
         file.lineFeed = "unix";
         file.open("r", "TEXT", "????");
         var xmpStr = file.read();

        desc.putObject( charIDToTypeID('Ofst'), charIDToTypeID('Ofst'), offsetDesc );
        executeAction( charIDToTypeID('Plc '), desc, DialogModes.NO );

  • Image processor defaulting to camera raw settings

    I'm trying to process a folder of RAW files. I'm using image processor and selecting the "open first image to apply settings" button. It opens the first Raw file in the folder and I can apply the Raw settings I want. This creates an xmp file next to that particular picture. The problem is, unless there is an xmp file next to each additional file in the bunch, it reverts to the camera raw default settings and does not apply the raw setting that I've selected to the picture.
    Is there some way to make sure this doesn't happen?

    well, I think I at least found a work around. If I save the settings I want as new camera defaults, it keeps the conversion consistent.

  • Custom Camera Raw settings not being recognised after copying to another mac

    Images captured on MacBook Pro and custom settings applied in Camera Raw, images then transferred to Mac Pro via USB are opened on Mac Pro using Adobe Bridge CS6, Camera Raw doesn't recognise the custom setting and opens using the setting used last time in Camera Raw.
    How do you retain the custom settings when transferring images and opening on another mac, the files are CR2 and the xmp files are also copied as well.

    ...and you did copy the xmp files as well as the RAW files to the second computer?

  • Trouble changing Camera RAW settings in Javascript (worked in CS5, but not CS6)

    I just upgraded to Master Collection CS6 from Production Premium CS5, and CameraRAWOpenOptions settings in scripts that I had working in Photoshop CS5 (64-bit) using Extendscript CS5 are no longer working with Photoshop CS6.  I get no error messages, but the settings I specify in the scripts (for example, CameraRAWOpenOptions.exposure=2.00) do not take effect when the image is opened.  Other Photoshop properties and actions within my script are working correctly.
    Note that this is an issue in Photoshop CS6.  I can use Extendscript CS5 or CS6, and the result is the same.
    Here is the way I am changing the settings in my script:
    var RawOptions = new CameraRAWOpenOptions;
    //RawOptions.settings=CameraRAWSettingsType.CUSTOM;
    //RawOptions.settings=CameraRAWSettingsType.SELECTEDIMAGE;
    RawOptions.settings=CameraRAWSettingsType.CAMERA;
    RawOptions.exposure=+2.00;
    RawOptions.vignettingAmount = 0;
    RawOptions.vignettingMidpoint = 0;
    RawOptions.contrast = 50;
    RawOptions.saturation = 0;
    RawOptions.shadows = 0;
    RawOptions.luminanceSmoothing = 0;
    var JPGopts = new JPEGSaveOptions;
    JPGopts.quality = JPEGquality;
    //Perform the loop through the files
    app.open(testListing[0], RawOptions, false);
    app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    for (var nfile = nstart; nfile < nstop; nfile++)
        app.open(testListing[nfile], RawOptions, false);
        FnameSave = new File(SavePath+"/"+testListing[nfile].name);
        app.activeDocument.saveAs(FnameSave, JPGopts, false, Extension.UPPERCASE);
        app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);

    I found a few of them actually work.
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.tint=0; // works (-150 to 150)
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.temperature=5500; // works (2000 to 50000)
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.luminanceSmoothing = 0; // works 0 to 100
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.saturation=50; // works =100 to 100
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.vignettingAmount=0; //works -100 to 100
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.vignettingMidpoint=0; //works -100 to 100
    These ones do not work:
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.brightness=0; // does not work (0 to 150)
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.contrast=0; // does not work (-50 to 100)
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.exposure = 0; // does not work (-4.0 to +4.0)
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.shadows=0; // (0 to 100) does not work
    CameraRAWOpenOptions.whiteBalance=WhiteBalanceType.SHADE; // does not work
    I noticed that, doing File-->File Info--> "Advanced" tab-->expand "Camera Raw Properties" that the ones that do not work have mostly either been removed (brightness) or had "2012" added to their names in the XMP in the conversion from CS5 to CS6.
    It appears the mapping from Javascript objects/properties to how Photoshop knows them is broken with the new version.  Is there any way to fix this?
    Is there an alternate way to do this by going through XMP?
    Unfortunately, I'm wanting to use "exposure", which is one of the ones that is broken.  My main script sets a custom exposure for each image (trying to smooth out EV jumps between successive images in a sunset time lapse).

  • Can ACR recognize camera raw settings?

    Trying to determine if ACR can recognize the camera settings (Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness, etc.) profiles that are set in camera.  Does anyone know?

    Are there any plans to fix this?  Seems strange that ACR and Bridge don't recognize the recipee's applied before the photo is taken...
    Considering that Camera Raw's processing engine is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from any camera manufacturer's processing SDK, you shouldn't be surprised...
    The way in which cameras set tags for later processing in their software is completely dependent on the camera makers processing software. The camera makers went down the road of proprietary file formats and raw processing.
    As a result, Adobe (and all the other 3rd party developers) had to create their own processing routines. Because of this, no two raw processing engines'  renderings are ever the same (with the exception of Camera Raw and Lightroom who share the same processing pipeline).
    Camera raw has done a remarkable job of decoding the white balance and providing DNG profiles to simulate various camera looks, but it's highly unlikely that it would be worth Adobe's time to bother replicating each and every camera control. You might ask the camera makers to open up their process or adopt some industry standards...(yeah, not likely :~)

  • Location of Camera Raw settings storage for jpg and tiff

    Just upgraded to CS3 on Windows. Cannot figure out where camera raw setting information is stored for jpgs and tiffs, and want to archive settings when I copy the adjusted images to external hard drives. I see no sidecar, and cannot find the info in any other file or folder. David T Cox.

    Since jpg & tiff are documented formats, there's no need for XMP sidecars...the adjustment settings are writtin to the file. Self contained, like DNG.

  • Restoring Camera Raw Settings?

    Hi guys
    Is there any way I can regain the settings i chose when I opened up a picture in camera raw?
    I need to apply the same colour settings to other photos but once youve opened an image after editing it on camera raw, theres no turning back.
    Is there any way around this?
    Thanks
    Kay

    Your original raw file is absolutely preserved intact.  When you open it, Photoshop brings the image into RAM and when you save it, it saves a copy of what's in RAM to whatever format you designate.
    All of this without touching the original raw, and ACR saves your settings in metadata.
    Just go back and open the original raw file once agaim, and you'll see everithing is still there.
    Raw files are always treated as read only.

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0 and Camera Raw Version Question

    I have been using Photoshop Elements 6.0 and it's does what I need to do.
    Revcently we bought two new cameras and the Camera Raw version 5.6 that we have installed does not support these new cameras.
    The Camera Raw list says that I need Camera Raw 6.2 for the one and 6.3 for the other (so 6.3).  But as far as I can understand, PE 6.0 will only support up to Camera Raw 5.6.
    And to support 6.3, I'd need a minimum of PE 8.0.
    Am I correct?
    Thanks

    Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original raw files as backups and for use in the manufacturers software)
    Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.2
    Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.2
    You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:
