Default DNS server unknown its coming while resolving`

Hi
i have windows 2012 domain controllers, able to successfully resolve dns queries.
But the problem is while resolving default server field its coming unknown. i created reverse lookup for dns server(Domain controller) after that host name is coming..
But after one day again hostname disappeared, default server field unknown coming..
If anybody knows this issue..

Hi,
Have you checked if the reverse lookup record is still present in the reverse lookup zone. Domain Controllers use dynamic registration to register A/PTR records for itself. Make sure Enterprise Domain Controllers group has permissions over the records so
these can be updated. This is found in on the security tab at the record/zone propetties. If you manually created the PTR record then it should have no timestamp therefore it will not be scavanged in case you enabled that function.
Hope this helps.

Calin

  • DNS server unknown

I am trying to get wireless connection to my Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132.  However, the company router for NetGear is not allowing me to connect to the internet.  The CD that came with the router, is irritating.  It needs the IP Address, the IP Mask, the Gateway Server and the DNS, however, when I pull up the configuration for these things, it comes up as
    DNS server:Unknown
    IP Address:192.168.1.1
Also, when I pull up the System Information, everything: the gateway server, DNS, IP Address, the IP Mask, all have unavailable beside them.
If anyone can give me so help on this, I would be appreciative.  I have racked my brain for two days on this router and the other one, a linksys.
Also, I can get the linksys to connect to the computer, but not to the internet.

This is one of those topics that is well beyond this forum but let me try. Beyond the router, you also need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) like AT&T, Cox, or the local phone company. The ISP provides a cable modem which then connects to the router. The router then connects either with a wire or wirelessly to the computers that are trying to connect to the Internet. Just having a router won't get your computer to the Internet. You need the ISP to provide the Public IP address, the DNS Server and the gateway to the Internet. DNS stands for Domain Name Services and it is what converts a website like Yahoo.com into an IP address like 123.5.173.9. From your questions and the nature of the problems you're having, I would suspect that you don't have an ISP or that the router is not connected correctly to the cable modem.

  • Changing default DNS Server

    Hi,
I'm a new BT broadband customer.
Like most, I have a house full of pcs and gadgets connecting to the Internet.  Many belong to my children.  Naturally, as a responsible parent, I want to do my utmost to limit their access to inappropriate content.
The basic first line of defence is obviously to have dns filtering.
However, my Home Hub 3 won't let me change the default dns gateway to some filtering service like OpenDNS, nor is there anything to suggest that BTs own dns service has this capability.
Can you please, as a matter of the greatest urgency (I believe that my children are currently able to access the most inappropriate content on their mobile devices), tell me how to get this in place.
    Thanks

Many thanks for the replies on this thread - they are much appreciated, especially the email address.
As I said, I would regard dns filtering as the first line of defence.  And a very necessary one, as my main concern is with my kids wifi connecting mobile devices.
What interests me about all this is that, as people have pointed out, there are ways to set the dns gateway per device.  To my mind that completely undermines any argument for not allowing it to be changed on the HH.
Why might BT want to disable dns setting in the Home Hub?
    i) Because they can then offer valuable dns based services, such as 404 redirection?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
ii) Because it is one less thing that could be miss-set, so cutting down support calls?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
iii) Because Government might ask us to ban access to certain sites and controlling the dns lookup would help us do this?
But users can override the dns setting on each device!
Am I missing something here?  Is there actually a really good reason - because I would shut up if there was one!
Meanwhile, my kids remain unprotected for a 3rd day

This is the output of my machine which is set to use Google DNS.  Notice the "SERVER" part: 8.8.8.8 which is Google DNS.
Also, once you've edited resolv.conf then a reboot may overwrite your settings.
    Put:
    nameserver 8.8.8.8
    nameserver 8.8.4.4
In it for Google DNS, THEN:
    sudo chattr +i resolv.conf
To make it immutable so no other program can overwrite (change) the file.  If you ever want the file to be changeable again "chattr -i resolv.conf"

  • Default DNS server IP addresses

I was having problems tracking down the default IP addresses for the FIOS DNS servers and saw others were having the same problem. Finally got them (at least, the ones for Maryland FIOS) and figured I'd post them in case they were of use to others:
    4.2.2.1
    4.2.2.2
    4.2.2.3
    4.2.2.4
    4.2.2.5
    Hope this can help someone.

If you want to see what DNS servers work best in your location, get GRC's DNS Benchmark utlity (free) here:

It will show you what smokes and what pokes.

  • Pragmatically change the DNS server

I have been trying to figure out how to write a program to change the DNS server, like you can in the control panel. I have played with Resolv.conf and a whole bunch of low level APIs.
From the terminal window, things like nslookup work (use the right dns server) but Safari doesn't. It still is using the original DNS server. I can stop and start safari and go to web pages it has not visited before and it still uses the old DNS server, so its not just pulling up cached pages.
It seems the low-level API stuff doesn't work for higher level applications like Safari (its the only high level app I know of that uses DNS to test with).
What is the API to use to change the DNS server address such that everyone,, like safari, will use the new DNS address?

Yeah, but I am changing all the DHCP entries in the system and it still gets out. However, it is solved by updating the system config. I was just curious as to where it got its DHCP server info from when the system config was blank and resolv.conf was set to my DHCP server.

  • DNS server with double NAT

    Hi All,
We are in a process of migrating to a new ISP.
With the new ISP, we have no options but double NAT (one in Cisco router and one in Firewall).
In the test environment for the new ISP (double NAT) a desktop behind the firewall getting a dynamic IP address (which includes DNS server 192.168.0.3) resolved an external web site too long, but when I changed the DNS ip address to 8.8.8.8 it resolved quickly
    as normal.
In the current live production every thing works as expected.
Any help/ idea would be appreciated.
    Cheers

    I would agree with Christopher.
You can also make sure that your DNS servers do not have public DNS IPs set in their IP settings. Instead, public DNS IPs should be set as forwarders. Also, make sure that you use your ISP DNS servers instead of other public DNS servers for external DNS
    resolution.
For troubleshooting DNS lookups, you can use NSlookup with debug mode for more details. I have started a Wiki about that here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/29184.nslookup-for-beginners.aspx

  • Osx lion dns server, forward certain domain searches to other dns server

    Hi!
i'm configuring the DNS service in OSX 10.7.1. I want to forward all queries to certain domain (f.e. *.special_domain.com) to certain dns server (f.e. 192.168.0.1 & 2)
i remember in previous OSX Server versions that you can do that in an easy way:
there were a /etc/resolver directory where you can place a text file in order to forward certain domain queries to certain dns server, like this:
    filename: /etc/resolver/special_domain.com
    content of this file:
    nameserver 192.168.0.1
    nameserver 192.168.0.2
now in lion there is no such directory... someone knows how to do that??
    thanks for reading and regards!
    D

i've just read about the "scutil" tool
From the reply of the command "scutil --dns" i understand that is possible and also supported (i guess)
Now i have to discover what files that tool reads, and which is the proper way to modify that
I'll keep investigating tomorrot, now i'm saved by the bell!!

  • Question about changing the IP of a Windows DC, that is also acting as a DNS server?

I have two subnets (network A, network B) located within the same single Windows domain site.
Each site has two DCs, which each are running AD-integrated DNS.
I need to move one server from network B, into network A.    If I change the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway and DNS entries on this server, shut it down, and then bring it back up on network A, should the server automatically register itself
in DNS under its new IP address, and behaving like a normal domain controller in the new subnet?   Or will I need to perform an ipconfig /registerdns on the domain controller once it comes back up in network A, in order for it to be seen as a domain controller/DNS
server under its new IP address?

If you change the IP of the DC, the command isn't going to be a IPCconfig/RegisterDNS.
DC's register their essential records when the NETLOGON service starts, so restart that.
**Are your clients using DHCP?  Are you sure you've eliminated the dependancies on that IP address for all your clients?

  • An unknown error occurred while validating the server dns

I am getting this error on the forwarder on my dc/DNs server which has a forwarder. Other DNS/DC servers have the same ip and are not getting the error validating the dns forwarder. only this one which is a 2008r2 dc just promoted. any idea?

Please make sure that there is no firewall / router that is blocking DNS traffic.
The problem persists if you disable EDNS0?

  • Resolving arabic domain name in Solaris DNS server

    Hi..
I just quickly want to know how can i define arabic font domain name to get resolve in my DNS server?
I tried to put entry with arabic name but editor making it abnormal, i recently get arabic locale installed on server through north Africa region. Locale is now showing me "AR" ..
    Thank you

Sorry my bad.... slight mistake in my question...Here is my corercted query--
After successfully connecting to the internet, when I do NSLOOKUP on the DC, the DNS doesnt resolve my internal domain/site but instead resolves external sites on the internet.
    My computer FQDN is nri.wwe.com
    Domain dns name is wwe.com
The above should get resolve internally but it searches on the internet.
This is how it should work
& it works perfect when I disable the other NAT network adapter (i.e. disable internet connectivity on my virtual DC)
    C:\>nslookup nri.wwe.com
    Server:  nri.wwe.com
    Address:  192.168.1.11
    Name:    nri.wwe.com
    Address:  192.168.1.11
But when I again enable internet connectivity, this it what happens.
    C:\nslookup www.wwe.com
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server:  UnKnown
    Address:  192.168.12.2
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Non-authoritative answer:
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Name:    www.wwe.com.nsatc.net
    Address:  64.152.0.124
    Aliases:  www.wwe.com
And when I again nslookup, this is what I get,
    C:\>nslookup www.wwe.com
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    Server:  UnKnown
    Address:  192.168.12.2
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    DNS request timed out.
        timeout was 2 seconds.
    *** Request to UnKnown timed-out
Now this 192.168.12.2 is VM assigned DNS via VM Natting with its own DHCP. If we do it manually, none of the virtual machines can connect to the internet. So I cannot fiddle with it anymore as I have already that as well.

  • Dnsmasq sends out its own ip as dns-server dhcp option

    i have a gateway / dns server on 192.168.1.1
I have a dhcp server on 192.168.1.2 (dnsmasq)
I configured dnsmasq to look into /etc/resolv.conf (well, that's actually default behavior) and use that to specify dns server when replying to client dhcp requests.
However, it sends out its own ip instead, which is *not cool*.

1 yes, the dhcp server who's scope is full will not do a dhcp
    'offer'
2 dhcp that answers fastest with a 'offer' will win. A delay is configurable (but changes nothing
about the root scenario were the fastest will win)
Note that if the scopes overlap on the servers, they might not lease out all the addresses in the scope.
I would enlarge the scope as you will want to fence against unavailability of one of the servers (or a network connection for that matter). you currently have more addresses leased out than any set of two of your servers can offer.

  • DNS Server does not resolve new generic Top Level Domain names- CNR configuration issue?

    Hi all,
I am not sure if this is the correct community to post this question, but I will give it a try. I noticed that the users of my network cannot resolve web sites using new top level domain names, like ".education", ".international", etc. I have an internal DNS server made by Infoblox and a Cisco CNR v6.3.3.1 as an external DNS server. Infoblox uses CNR as its forwarder and CNR uses the root DNS servers for queries.
I would think that CNR was the problem because it is an obsolete product but after speaking with a fellow engineer at another organization where they still use an older version of CNR than mine, they have no problems at all. So now I am thinking it is a setting either on Infoblox, or on CNR I need to change. I can see Infoblox is forwarding the requests to CNR but that's about it. I am not sure if CNR is discarding the request. When I do an nslookup from a PC in my network it does not matter if I set my DNS server to be the Infoblox or the CNR. Neither resolves the URL.
Then again, no matter what I lookup using the CNR as my DNS, I only get a response with the root DNS names and IPs!
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi Constantinos,
Have you taken a look at the infoblox community site?  We've just reposted your question there and alerted some internal SMEs that should provide a solution soon.
