Default Download Folder: Default Application Update (Archive) Folder

I am installing SATA drives in my G4s and am rebuilding & reinstalling all software, which brings up the question about where should I, according to Apple Human Interface Guidelines, or other criteria such as system efficiently, place folders for the following in 10.4.11:
1. A default download folder.
2. A default folder for storing application updates/installer (i.e., .bin, .zip, etc...). This is basically stuff from the download folder that will permanently saved be archived later.
I use all my Macs under the administrator account so there will never be any other user accounts.

1. In your Browser Prefs there'll be a Sve Files to or such...
Firefox>Preferences>General>
Safari>Preferences>General>
2. Everything in your Download folder will be saved unless you delete it.
I use all my Macs under the administrator account so there will never be any other user accounts.
For safety I like to have another Admin account in case something goes wrong with the standard account.

  • Can't download any new application updates

When I try to update any of my applications, it begins to download, then a pop up says "Unable to Download Application" and that I will be able to download it when I log in to the iTunes Store on my computer. Well I've tried downloading the updates on my computer and it also doesn't work. A pop up comes up saying that there were errors that occurred. Basically, I haven't been able to download any new applications in a few months. I was waiting for the next update, hoping it would fix it, but it didn't. Does anyone else have these problems? What can I do?

Basically, none; if desired, you can fill out and submit this form, but will probably be told to call.

  • Pro Applications Update 2010-02 not available

    This is a heads up.
I just bought FCS and attempted to download the Pro Applications Update 2010-02 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL949 in case I ever need to do a clean install at a time when I don't have internet access. This page asked me for my serial number, which I provided, but told me that my serial number is invalid.
With my 90 day complimentary support, I called 1-800-275-2273, and was told that my serial number is valid but the server containing this update is down. I was advised to use apple.com.feedback. That was my support.
I often work in natural settings that don't even have a telephone, so my work environment must be self sufficient. While I did successfully update using Software Update, acquiring this update in file form is important to me because there are times when a clean install of the OS and apps is the most effective way of dealing with problems, and I can not assume that I will have internet access at such a time.
If you are having the same problem, it's not your serial number.

I have had the same problem on many occasions.
What I found is that if I continually try, it EVENTUALLY kicks in.
    Weird man!!!

Downloading images used to go automatically to the last folder used to save images, even when reopening Firefox. In just the past few days, possibly coinciding wih the most recent updates, the folder defaults to the 'Downloads' folder. This is most annoying. What happened? Internet Explorer 8.0 did the same thing. This was one of the reasons why I started using Firefox to download all images. I went into Tools>Options and it only lets me set another folder. I dont want to set a specific folder I want it to always go to the last folder used. So what gives?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== possibly when the most recent updates were installed, a few days ago

Thanks jscher 2000. I guess I didn't make it clear. "It restarts with all the addons activated, and resumes with the tabs that were open before closing it." IE, it's running fine now with all the extensions activated. Everything is OK now.
So something in the Firefox code was causing the bad behavior. It's not essential that I find out what the problem was - I'm just curious. And if anybody else has this same problem, it might be nice to have it corrected at the source.

  • My default downloads folder is on my server at work, so when I'm at home the downloads window won't open and I can't change my download settings.

I've tried resetting my downloads folder to default, but it just goes back to the downloads folder on my work server that I won't be able to connect to until next month. When I try to select a different download folder, the "browse" button doesn't work. I've also tried selecting the option to ask me where to save each time, but nothing pops up when I try to save something.

hey jessicats86, please enter '''about:config''' into the locationbar of the browser (you might have to confirm the info message in case it shows up) and search for the preferences named '''browser.download.dir''' & '''browser.download.lastDir'''. right-click each of them and reset the value to the default. then restart firefox and try to set the download folder again in the options panel.

How do I change the default folder that opens when uploading a file to the internet from my mac? (at the moment it automatically defaults to 'Downloads' folder)
    For example...
I am on a webiste and wish to upload a photo.
I click on select file on the website
Finder opens and defaults to 'Downloads' folder (it happens with all wesbites)
    How do I change this?

I am on a webiste and wish to upload a photo.
I click on select file on the website
You are attempting to download the picture to your computer not uploading photo to the website if I am understanding you correctly.
To change the download direction, you must do so through your browser's Preferences.  If you are using Safari, hopefully, someone who uses Safari will help you and/or post over in their forums.  I do not use Safari.
    If using Firefox>Preferences>General>Save Files to:

  • Defaulting Downloads folder in dock to open in Finder

I have the Downloads Folder in my dock - next to the Trash Bin, and whenever I open it (click it), it always opens to display the contents of the folder as large icons. I always have to scroll to the bottom of the folder and click "open in Finder." Is there a way to make the folder open in Finder by default? That way I can view the contents of the Downloads folder in "List" form, and not having to always scroll to the bottom of the folder and click "open in Finder?"

    LowLuster wrote:
You can also display the Dock icon in List view. Right click on the icon and select List instead of Grid.
Yes, I'm aware of that. Thats probably the only solution besides DWB's idea. I'll just do that and change the sorting to "date added." I'd still prefer it just open as an actual Folder when I click it, however.
    Thanks.

  • Finder cannot open HOME folder - "There is no default application specified

HELP! Starting this morning, after a reboot, Finder will not open my home folder. If I open a Finder window and try to open "jen" which is my wife's home folder (and what we're logged in as) Finder says "There is no default application specified to open the document Jen". If I go to this folder through Macintosh HD->Users->Jen I get the same message.
If I click on this folder in the Finder window it doesn't show an arrow indicating that it is a directory and under the "Preview" pane, it shows the house icon, but says the "Kind" is a "Package" (??).
HOWEVER, everything else still works. The desktop is populated. All the applicatiosn like Itunes and Iphoto find the photos and songs.
If I go into Utilities->Terminal and use the bash shell I can see that the /Users/jen folder IS intact and all of the files are there.
Is this some type of Finder damage?
Ideas on how to fix?? I'm a Windows and Linux expert, but pretty new to Mac, so I'm perplexed.
I thought maybe a permissions issue, and I tried the disk utility->Repair disk permissions and that didn't help.
This is what the "jen" folder shows for permissions and attributes in the bash shell:
    cd /Users
    ls -l
    drwxr-xr-x 28 jen jen 952 Dec 21 09:38 jen
I MIGHT have injected this problem, because I was having a problem where I could not see volumes on the desktop when I double clicked a DMG file (it worked before), and I was playing around with a few DMG images, and I tried one on the Apple website called dragster which said it changed Finder and then I uninstalled it. I think the problem started after this.
I THINK everything else is fine, from what I can see.
    Help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Greg

For those who may hit this problem in the future, I figured what my solution was, and called Apple support and they confirmed it was my best option. To fix it:
    1. In NetInfo Manager, enable root access.
    2. Log off.
    3. Login as root userid with the root password (make sure you set one in NetInfo Manager)
    4. As root, copy the folder, which Finder thinks is a 'package' to a backup drive or if no backup drive then some other location outside of /Users.
NOTE: I found if I clicked on the Users/<userid> folder once to highlight it in Finder, then under the gear icon chose "Open Package Contents" it would launch a finder window and show you all of the files in the users folder - that way you could grab them and copy them over if you wanted to do it that way, but dragging the 'package' over works fine too. One other option, in the bash shell IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE:
    cp -R /Users/<userid> <backupdrive>/<backupfolder>
    5. Once you are sure you've backed up the damaged users folder, go into System Preferences -> Accounts. Delete the damaged users userid. When it prompts you if you want to delete immediately, you should probably not click that but instead click the button to create a backup image of the users home folder. This will create an image in /home/Delete_users/<userid>.dmg that is a another backup of the users data. Then the /Users/<userid> data is deleted and the account is gone.
    6. Recreate the user account, setup the same settings as you used before.
    7. Copy the data from the backup drive/folder to the new /Users/<userid> folder. You don't have to copy all of the data back, just the users settings and personal files. You can find info on what is users personal folders vs control folders elsewhere. I guess if in doubt copy it all back over.
    8. Next, you need to give the userid permission to their files since they will be set to be owned as root since root copied them out and back in.
    In Applications->Utilities->Terminal
    chown -R <userid>:<userid> /Users/<userid>
    So I did:
    chown -R jen:jen /Users/jen
That sets jen to be owner of all files and folders under /Users/jen
    9. Logoff as root.
    10. Login as the once damaged userid. It should work, all settings should still be intact, and you should have a normal 'home' folder you can get into through Finder.
    11. Go into NetInfo manager and under the 'Security' menu 'Disable root access' to disable the root userid again.
    12. Keep your backup of your home folder for a while until your comfortable everything has been restored.
There MIGHT be an easier way to reset this, maybe with some AppleScript, but I don't know it.
    There you go.

  • How do i change my default download folder?

i cannot change my download folder in FF 3.6.2.

    Bad idea.
I disagree. I like having the desktop set as my download folder, because it serves as an always-present reminder that I need to do something with the downloaded items. In the past, I have fought endless clutter in various other download folders, due to the fact that I was able to forget about them most of the time. When I needed something, it was a hassle to find it in the clutter, but at that moment I didn't typically have time to clean it up.
However, it is important to be aware of the problems related to having too many things on the desktop.

  • What is the default file that's in the downloads folder on a fresh install of OSX?

I deleted the .pdf file that's in the Downloads folder when you first install OSX.
Is there anyway to get this file back?

The file is the "About Downloads" pdf file, that's preset in the Downloads folder when you first install the OS.
Can this be replaced if you accidentally delete it?

  • Can't find downloads folder since i updated

Through Blackberry Desktop Software I updated my Curve and it changed everything.  I hate my phone now but my biggest problem is that no matter where I look I can't find my downloads folder.  I even went to options-->homescreen preferences-->downloads folder-->from here it doesn't matter where i put it i can't find it.  i also no longer have an option for what theme i can use.  it only has one which is new and i hate.  the two that were default on my phone when i bought it are gone and i can't find the ones i've downloaded from Blackberry App World along the way either.  That's why I thought if I could just find my download folder I could maybe find my themes I had previously and use them.  HELP!

I've had a quite similar issue, and I've solved it by deleting the custom command set preference file (user/library/Application SUpport/ Aperture/ Comands set/)
Not sure if it'll solve your problem, but it deserves a try

hello, there's a general regression in firefox 27 that won't allow files to download directly into a root drive. please try to create a subfolder (like ''D:\Downloads'') and set this as default location for downloads...

  • Changing Apple Software Updates download folder location

    Hi,
My C drive is full so my computer won't allow me to update iTunes. I have moved Apple Software Updates (as well as my iTunes and media folders) to my D drive but it still downloads the update files to my C drive which doesn't have room to allow the download to happen. Can anyone tell me how to change the download folder location for ASU?
I'm hoping if I can change the location it will work. Any help or other suggestions would be much appreciated!
    Thank you

    HI,
Saving files to the Desktop can lead to poor performance on your Mac, read here.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7667118#7667118
If you still want to save files to the Desktop regardless, and you can change the default location in Safari Preferences, then make not of your Safari Preferences and then delete this file.
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash and restart your Mac. Try Safari Preferences/Downloads, click "Other" and see if you can navigate to the Desktop.
You would be much better off creating a folder and keeping in your Dock.
*"i want my downloads to go to a folder on my desktop called downloads."*
    Name it anything but Downloads.

  • How to remove wd essential firmware update in the download folder

after I download WD Essential Firmware update in the download folder, I can;t remove the file.  Any suggestion?

Open App/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app  and quit the WD QuickView process.
Go to Library/Application Support/WD SmartWare, where you will find WDQuickView.app. Move it to trash and delete it.
You may have to reboot to clear the menubar extras or in terminal copy and Paste:
    killall SystemUIServer
