Default Durations

I regularly switch between 30 fps projects and 24 fps projects.  I'm getting a little tired of having to go into Preferences and switch the default duration for video transitions from 30 to 24 (and stills from 150 to 120) every time I switch a project type.  It's way past due for this to be a Project setting, not a Global setting.
I just sent off a feature request.  I encourage others to do the same.
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

So you would like for the Sequence FPS adjust the default Transition and Still Durations?
While I do not switch FPS often, I find it easy to just Click-drag (I usually have my Info Panel open), when I need to make a change. I have a default still setting of 08 sec., as that is where most of my text titles come in. When I create a "Main Title," I want it to be 06 sec, instead of the 08, as there is less Text to read. A quick Click-drag gets me there. Same for Transitions. Regardless of the default, I often adjust mine to suit the mood. Especially with Dip-to-Black, I might extend those by several seconds, to fit the time/date change of the scenes. I also often add 02 sec. of Black Video, in between, when the change is longer.
Perhaps a separate Panel for still & Transition Durations, and have it open, or docked in a useful Pane?
With different FPS material, I guess that I can see the request.

  • How to set the default duration of an activity?

As far as I have been able to find, all iCal entries have a default duration of one hour.
However, in 98% of the cases, I'd want the duration to be just 15 mins.
How can I avoid changing this for almost every entry?

    Bob,
I have found this terminal command to be helpful for creating events at the desired interval.

  • Default duration time for importing still images

    Hello all,
Is there an easy way to change the default duration time for imported still images?
I have thousands of images that I want to import to make a time elapsed movie. I would like for these images to have a duration of less than a second. I could do this individually, but it would take forever.
Can the default duration time for imported images be changed?
    Thanks,
    Adam

    Hi
Too long time I made anything serious in iMovie HD6 (altough a a very competent editor)
    (Took the FinalCut leap)
As I remember (just tested) it - if photos are imported then it's a tedious labor
to set duration - one at a time. No global function I can induce.
BUT - I would put my photos into a separate folder in iPhoto so that they are easy
to get in iMovie from audio/photo browser.
Then I select (in iMovie) the first photo and double click on it to view it on canvas.
Now I also get a small gray window where I can set size and duration.
    I select 01:00 (1 sec) in duration and Apply/Use.
Then I selec the rest of the photos and drag them down to TimeLine after first
photo. And they also get same duration of 01:00.

  • Default duration on the timeline of Roll title.

We are developing a title importer plugin for Premiere Pro CC.
I want to set a default duration value when I put materials on the timeline.
However, selector imGetInfo8 is called, if imFileInfoRec8->vidInfo.isRollCrawl=1 is returned, the value of General Setting will be effective.
    It is supplementary as follows:
    1.materials is a roll/crawl title.
2.The roll/crawl title made by our software.
    3.roll/crawl title has duration.
4.The roll/crawl title in the timeline already, I want to change the duration freely.
5.It is not reflected although imFileInfoRec8->vidDuration was tried.
Is it possible in Premiere Pro SDK ?
    Best Regards.

    Hi Zac,
    I really appreciate your reply.
About "roll/crawl titles cannot be initialized with a non-default length".
-> I Understand. I hope to become able to initialize it in the future.
*I hope that a new type is added to the 'ImporterDurationType'.
for example 'imNoDurationVidDurationDefault' ---> use supplied vid duration and duration on the timeline can be changed freely.
Normal video does not seem to fit as a solution.
Because I would like to adjust duration freely on the timeline.

  • Is there a default DURATION in RMAN?

We're running: Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.1.0
In one of our lower environments we had an archivelog backup that had been running for just over 24 days (no one noticed), and it suddenly ended during the night with the following error message:

Neither of the DBAs had logged in and cancelled the job, either via a "kill" command or anything else. Other archivelog backups have been running to completion in the interim, without issue, even while this one was "hung".
So, the question is, what generated the "user interrupt"?
I've looked at all of our daily scripts, and do not see anything that might perform any "cleanup" of long-running processes.
I know you can specify a DURATION window, for your backup to run in, which, if exceeded, RMAN will gracefully "self-destruct". I'm wondering if there is some default value of say, 24 days-or-so, that may have kicked in to cause this.
Anyone have any thoughts/ideas on what may have happened?
    Thanks.

    No, I don't believe so.
Sometimes the environment variables NLS_DATE_FORMAT and NLS_LANG being set wrong can cause this.
There's an Oracle note on this :

  • How to set the default duration for still pictures ?

    Hi there,
At the moment, when I drag a still picture from Viewer window to the Canvas window, a default 10-sec duration of the still picture will appear on the timeline.
How do I set this default to 8 seconds ?
I tried looking at User Preference and System Preference but cannot locate them. Maybe I miss them ?
Can someone help me on this, please ?
    Thanks

If you set the still for 8 seconds it will come out at 6 seconds and 20 frames.
So if you want a really exact figure you will have to set it longer by maths or trial and error.
Yes Ian, just noticed that there is a bug !
Mine was set to 12 secs & I always got 10 seconds.
    Now I set to 12 secs & I got 8 seconds.
It looks like it is always 2 seconds less from what you set ?

  • ICal Default Duration

Before Lion, a new event in iCal would be 1-hr. duration by default. Now the default is all-day, and when I uncheck that, the default is 8 hours. How can I get back to a 1-hour duration default for new events?

    Tocanostra,
Your first post indicated a duration of 8 hours. The 8 hour duration was an indication of plist corruption. Since you followed the suggestion and refreshed the plist file, I surmise that it now reverts to the default behavior.
For others reading this thread, events entered in the Month view without any time references will be entered as all day events. Additional event entry tips:
Click Add at the top of the iCal window or press Command (⌘)-N.Events are added automatically to your default calendar.
If you want to choose a different calendar for the event, hold down the Add button (+), and then choose a calendar.
To change your default calendar, choose iCal > Preferences, click General, and then select a calendar from the Default Calendar pop-up menu.
Enter a name, date, and time duration for the event, and then press Return. For example, you can enter “Super Bowl Party Feb 6,” “Movie with Rebecca on Friday at 7pm,” “Soccer Game on Saturday from 11am-1pm,” or “Breakfast with Jon,” and then press Return.
If you don’t enter a time duration for the event, iCal sets the event’s duration to 1 hour.
If you don’t enter any time information for the event, iCal makes the event an all-day event.
If you enter “breakfast” or “morning,” iCal sets the event to start at 9 a.m.
If you enter “lunch “ or “noon,” iCal sets the event to start at 12 p.m.
If you enter “dinner” or “night,” iCal sets the event to start at 8 p.m.
To set any other event options (for example, to set your event to repeat, add an alert, or invite others to the event), make your changes in the event’s editor, and then click Done.

  • Default Duration of a video element

    Hi,
when I set the defaultDuration property of a video element it hasnt no function. The video is playing to the end. Is that a bug or a miss implementation by me?

The defaultDuration property isn't meant to control the duration of playback.
Once the media is loaded, the actual duration is used rather than the defaultDuration.
Sounds like what you want might be subclips instead - something like this?
    var resource:StreamingURLResource = new StreamingURLResource(REMOTE_STREAM);
    resource.clipStartTime = 10;
    resource.clipEndTime = 25;
    return new VideoElement(resource);
And now for more than you may want to know about the defaultDuration property:
This property exists in case you want to set the duration for an element before it is loaded.
For example, in a serial composition you might want to play 3 videos, two which are content, and one which is a mid-roll ad.
Each video doesn't get it's duration set until it is loaded - but you want to have a scrubber bar UI element that allows you to move across from beginning of the 1st video to the end of the 3rd video. You don't get the total duration of all 3 videos until they are loaded, which happens "just in time", too late for your scrub bar.
So you can manually set the "defaultDuration" of the video. This manually set duration defines the duration that the element's TimeTrait will expose until the element's content is loaded. By manually pre-assigning a duration to each piece of media, the total composition duration can be calculated. This duration can be used by user interface controls (such as a scrub bar).
    Hope that helps!
P.S. Ideas to improve the docs are VERY welcome. Here are the two places we talk about this feature now:

  • Can't change default video transition duration in PRE7 project

I couldn't find the solution  for the following problem. In one of my Premiere Elements 7 projects, suddenly the video transition default duration changed from 30 frames to 3 frames. After inserting this 3 frames long transition, I can adjust it (expanding or shrinking) in the timeline, change the duration via the "Edit Transition" dialog box, however there is no way I can change the default duration. I can change the duration value in the Edit > Preferences > General dialog box but it has no effect on the actual duration. This is true for all transitions. On the other hand, the other projects (I checked a few), also  a new project work properly: In them, the default duration is 30 frames, and I can set it in the Properties dialog box to any other value. So, this problem appears to be project specific. I hope somebody can help me, so I do not have to redo this particular project. Thanks in advance, Laci.

Steve, This is the same camcorder I have been using the last five years. Other projects from footages taken the same time are working fine. Also, I just created a 'new' (test) project from the same clips (many clips, about 25 minutes, several bmp pictures in it) - and it also works fine! It must be some very peculiar feature of that particular project, and I do not think it is worth to spend more time with it. I just thought that it might have happened with somebody else and there is a known solution. I consider this issue closed, thanks for the help. Laci. (PS: I also have an insignificant problem: I uploaded my picture to my preferences page here a couple of months ago, set it to be displayed but it does not appear. Who could help with this? Thanks.)

  • Slideshow: Setting Image Default Image Duration

    Howdy All!
I am again attempting to create a slideshow on FCE and it has been almost a year since I last used FCE. I have forgotten if there is a way to set the default duration of still images either as I import them into FCE or as I move them to the timeline.
I will also need to set a default duration for my transitions.
Does anyone know if there is a simple way to calculate how much inserting a transition will affect the duration of images. I know from past experience that if I calculate the duration of my still images so that a section of slide show is a specific length and then add in transitions, they will actually shorten the total duration of that section.
    Thanks
    HPL

It will only change new images as we said.
Regarding all the transitions, there is a way to streamline the process:-
    1. Put all slides in Timeline.
    2. Make your transition a Favorite.
    3. Click on the first "join" and add the transition.
    4. Press the Down Arrow and the playhead will jump to the next "join".
    5. Drag the Favorite from the Browser and drop it over the "join".
Keep repeating steps 4 and 5. It is extremely quick taking less than 5 seconds each and getting quicker with practice. You should be able to do the whole lot in well under half an hour.

  • SIMPLE QUESTION: DEFAULT SETTING FOR STILL CLIP DURATION

I want to change it from :10 to :05 for stills that cue up in the Viewer window. The sequence needs to be all :05 cuts and I want to streamline this as much as possible. Many, many stills to throw into this sequence, and all the same length. Just not :10.
    Thanks!

That setting sets the default duration *at the time images are imported*. It has no effect on images already in the browser.
One strategy is to delete the images from the browser then reimport the whole lot again.

  • Default object duration in x.0 seconds only?

am i being silly when i expect that the "default object duration" preference setting to honour whatever value is given after in decimals there for seconds instead of round it up or down to the nearest whole second as it seems to do????
yeah yeah, 12.5 seconds in 25 fps does equal a half frame, but why does it give me options that aren't really available????
this mickey mouse tool is getting more and more on my nerves...

ok, translation - step by step:
in motion, got to Motion -> Preferences -> Project Panel
under Still Images & Objects, you will find Custom Default Duration, with options "Use project duration" or "Use custom duration".
behind "Use custom duration" you will find a text entry field that will let you enter a custom duration (duh) and a popup menu that will let you select whether the number you entered is in frames or seconds.
now please humour me and set this to "seconds" and then enter, let's say "10.5"
in ntsc, this should give you a custom duration of 10.5 x 29.97 frames == a standard duration of 314.685 frames (for those of us who use pal video, that should be 262.5 frames duration).
instead of rounding this up or down to the nearest round number, the moment you close the preferences and reopen it, motion will have changed your 10.5 to 10.0
try entering any other decimal number and you will find that motion resets it to 0
in other words; motion __pretends to be giving you the option to enter default duration in decimals, but in reality, you can only have full seconds default duration or you will have to do the maths yourself and switch to setting the number of frames you would like to have as default duration
as for why this would bother me enough to post here? it is part of a long gripe with the endless number of mickey mouse "features" that motion seems to have.
but if you can explain why it would be a good idea for an interface to allow the user to enter decimals as a default value and then, as soon as the user clicks away to ignore the decimal, by all means, please do enlighten me!

  • Changing the default event time to all-day in Month View?

I updated to Mavericks today, and when I went to add an event to my Calendar, I discovered that all-day was not the default time.  In Mountain Lion, when going to add an event in Month View, it was automatically set to all-day, which is perfect because all of my events are all-day events.  Now, it's being set to 9:00 to 10:00, and I have to check the box to make it all-day.  I know that this isn't much work, but when I'm adding dozens of events it starts to get a little annoying.
    Calendar 7.0, OS X 10.9 (Mavericks).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    npatelaz,
I don't think that it is possible, even using Terminal. If you want to change your workflow, "all day" events can easily be created in the Day/Week view, but as you stated the Month view poses a problem.
    Calendar Help says:
    To make:
An event that lasts all day:
In Day or Week view, double-click in the “All-day” section at the top of the calendar.
An existing event last all day:
In Day, Week, or Month view, double-click the event, click the date, then select “All-day.”
    A multiday event:
In Week view, drag from the start time to the end time. You can drag across multiple days.In Day or Month view, create an event. Then, enter the start and end dates and times.
An all-day event into a multiday event:
In Week view, drag the all-day event across multiple days.
How to Change the Default Duration of New iCal Events - The Mac Observer was written over a year ago, but it may give you some other ideas.

  • ICal 5 default event length

Since installing Lion last week iCal sets all new events I create to 'all day' as the default, previously it was the normal 1 hour which was fine. The old command line trick to modify the default (defaults write com.apple.iCal 'Default duration in minutes for new event' 60) does not appear to work with iCal 5 / Lion. Anyone else seeing this, and if so anyone know how to get this back to 1 hour versus every new event defaulting to all day?
NEVER MIND-After searching these boards fruilessly the solution only showed up after I posted the question. Apple may need to work on their search functionalty. Short answer, default for the "month" view is all day. Apparently you can type a time and data detectors will make the change.

While I don't disagree that the changes seem a bit less than intuitive, you can always have the default alarm already set (in iCal, open Preferences and at the bottom of the General tab you can turn on the default alarm and set a time ahead of future events to go off). So if you have the default alarm set, and know how to trigger the time of day setting, then all you would really have to manually change is the event length (default is 1 hour). And you can change that using data tags as well. Just create an event named "have lunch with Jalpuna from 12:00 to 2:00 PM" and sure enough iCal will create an event named "have lunch with Jalpuna" on the date you clicked on from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. It definately is an adjustment, but not nearly as bad as I feared when I first started trying to figure it out. Best of luck!
