Default file association & audio output settings in Audition

I get so tired of having to adjust the 'default player' for my audio files. I'd prefer everything to play in WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER and have that set as such. But, I guess my HP PC and/or Audition causes them to switch quite often.  I don't see that setting in Audition, as sometimes my WAV files show the Audition icon on them and will then obviously want to open in there if I click on them. ANd if they have switched then mp3 and FLAC become associated with HP MediaSmart. Maybe it is a cuplrit also, but it sure is frustrating and I figured I need to ask for help.
Secondly, on this PC (WIN7) I have to listen to Audition either thru headphones or speakers (thus far). I don't remember HAVING to listen thru headphones or speakers by manually setting it in Audition Preferences on my previous PC (XP).  I would just plug the headphones in and THAT would make the sound go throught the headphones. I generally am using headphones when using Audition, but it gets frustrating having to manually change Preferences when I want to listen thru speakers. I don't have to do that with Audacity.
If I try to listen without headphones (with it set to Headphones) it gives me an error message saying The selected output port or ASIO driver is invalid. Please change your settings in the Audio Hardware Setup dialog. What should I have it set on so I am not one or the other? I like to be able to go back and forth without changing it in settings each time. My apologies if I am just overlooking something simple.

My guess, and that's all it is because of the way I have observed different Windows 7 machines behaving differently in this respect, is that the functionality of the headphone/speaker switching depends on what order you start various programs up.
My guess id that you are using Audition 3 because of the reference to asio in post 1, so I assume you are working through "Audition Windows Sound"? Have you tried asio4all as an alternative interface? Maybe that might give more control.
I assume you have checked that the default sample rate in Windows Control Panel is the same for both speaker and headphone output. I don't think this should make a difference, but you never know. I can't look at this here as both my Win 7 machines just show speakers as the only output choice even though there is automatic switching to headphones when they are plugged in. Both current machines have Realtek audio.
Sorry this is all so vague.

  • Is there a fix for Mountain Lion audio output settings after the laptop goes to sleep and wakes back up?

Mac Book Pro running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 after the notebook sleeps audio and video does work (for example on YouTube).  I have been able to temporarily work around this by toggling the settings on Built-in Output in Audio Midi Setup, Audio window between 2ch-20bit Integer and 2ch-24bit Integer.  But this is a temporary fix until the laptop sleeps again.
When it's not working, all system sounds (emails "dings", delete file "swish", etc.) are silenced, and video playbacks on YouTube and elsewhere freeze and have no audio until the Audio Output settings are toggled then they all immediately start working.
Has anyone encountered the same?  Have a long term fix for this annoyance?

  • How do I reset the default file association for .bat files on Windows 8.1?

Windows 8.1 allows the user to change the file association for .bat files. I made the mistake of using this facility to change the default file association for .bat files to Notepad++. Now when I attempt to run a .bat file, the script for the .bat
comes up in Notepad++, instead of its being run as an executable file!  All my .bat files are now useless. I tried finding a way to change this back to the original executable setting, including deleting Notepad++ from my system, but nothing
    has worked.
There are discussions that I found on the Internet about this problem, and the solutions to which I was led have not worked either. Most of the solutions apply to Windows 7 or Vista, but not to Windows 8. There are a few solutions that purport to apply to Windows
8 and 8.1, but they do not work for me.
(Disconcertingly, some of the solutions presented for the problem that apply to Vista or Windows 7 and are dated as early as 2009, so this problem has apparently been around for some time, but Microsoft still keeps .bat files on the Control Panel facility that
enables the change to be made. I cannot see why, but there it remains.)
Can someone please help me change this file association back to the original setting for Windows 8.1? Remember, most if now all the links that address this issue are focused on Windows 7. I need an answer that has been tried and proven to apply to Windows 8.1.
    Nothing I have tried works.

    Hi,
For the issue, we can restore Default File Extension Type Associations through adding the registry entries.
    1. Download the .reg file from the following link.
    http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/tutorials/8025d1345781188-default-file-associations-restore-windows-8-bat.reg
Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information.
    2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.
    3. Double click on the downloaded .reg file to Merge it.
    4. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.
    5. Sign out and in, or restart the computer to apply.
    6. If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg file for the listed file extension or protocol below while logged into their administrator account.
    Hope this helps.

  • Restore all default file associations?

Hi folks.  I recently installed this app called The Unarchiver and now my system is all screwed up.  I can't open dmgs to install anything.  How do I get back to default file associations and get rid rid of this app?  Thanks.

I use TheUnarchiver and it has never given me any issues.  You can move the app to the trash and see if your DMG's mount properly.  I don't believe TheUnarchiver attempts to open dmgs.

  • Default file associations in linux?

    Hi,
I quit using KDE and among other glitches, most of my programs have lost their knowledge of file associations or have very odd ideas about them. For example, opera thinks that gimp is the default program for pdf files on my machine. Thunderbird has forgotten all the associations except the ones I've set in thunderbird itself, and if I remember it right, some KDE app was always popping up suggesting a file type. (I think it was kmfclient...)
Anyways, isn't there a way to manage file types on a lower level? I've been reading that the kernel itself supports mime types since 2.2. I'm not using a DE anymore and I'd need some sort of lightweight handler to open programs accordingly.
So where are file associations handled in linux? Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

File associations are a mess right now. Many programs (Opera included) handle them their own way. There's a project underway to handle associations in a standard way (see MIME actions, shared MIME info, desktop entries, all at freedesktop.org), but not all software uses it; KDE is a notable holdout (3 at least, not sure about 4).
Note that that first spec link, MIME actions, is currently "in the requirements-gathering / early-planning stages." That means there is no spec for that. As I said, a mess.
Most likely, Opera and Thunderbird detected you were running KDE and special-cased their association-finder to ask KDE instead. Now that you aren't, they're falling back to their normal behavior: use the first .desktop file to claim the MIME type. As I recall, both applications offer ways to specify associations in their preferences; you might just want to stick to that for now. Or use a desktop environment.
The kernel-level MIME support is designed to allow execution of strange files using interpreters. For example, you could directly execute Windows applications (as in "./notepad.exe") by setting the kernel to "interpret" application/exe files using wine. No applications use it for opening files.

  • Failed to execute default file manager (Input /Output Error) [SOLVED]

I'm having an issue in XFCE where the default Terminal, Browser and File Manager launch correctly - but with this error:

I have the requisite  "Preferred Application" set as Chrome/Thunar/xfce4-terminal.
    If I run

    From terminal, it says:

Remember, it launches the app successfully - and the apps themselves launch correctly, it's only exo-open that I have a problem with!  Everything else works great on this system.

Tried downgrading glibc from 2.21-3 to 2.21-2 as this is the package which contains libpthread.so, and on my other arch workstations I don't have the issue, but to no avail, same error box pops up when using exo-open, and my IDEs are not starting.
I'll try comparing installed packages versions on both workstations.

  • Default File Associations - Windows 8 - override?

    Hello,
will the following Policy override the already set file associations?
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer\Set a default associations configuration file
I am asking because I want to add some file associations and it would be terriable, if all other associations would be deleted. Cant find anything documented.

    Hi,
Based on my understanding, if we associate specific file type or protocol with default applications in the file, this default association should overwrite previous associations
set to these file types or protocols.
Besides, if this group policy is enabled, the file will be processed and default associations will be applied at logon time.
However, even if this policy is enabled, users will still be able to override default file type and protocol associations.
Regarding this setting, the following article can be referred to for more information.
Windows 8: Associate a file Type or protocol with a specific app using GPO (e.g:default mail client for MailTo protocol)

  • Need to default file association to Indesign CS2

    Hello,
I am using a PC/XP sp2, and i have both adobe cs1, cs2, and cs3 installed sequentially. I need to default all .indd files to open with Indesign CS2 instead of cs3 from the window explorer. However, that's not happening at all. I have tried to google the solution, and also a few available methods online, but none of them is working.
    > open file as (not working - not even recognizing the cs2 at all)
    > file association preference inside bridge cs2/cs3 (nothing happend)
    > file properties (file association refuse to work)
The only ways that I can get a .indd file to open is to (1) open the document from within cs2, or (2) open the file from bridge. Sure, it works, but it's a pain. Please let me know if yall have any idea how to resolve this? or is this the kind of issue i need to live with?
    Thanks.

    > However, you can try to force Windows to open with another program > by right-clicking any ID document (though it better be a CS2 one), > then select "Choose program". Browse to the CS2 location and check > the "Always open with" box. That oughta work.
Yeah, I have attempted that too. And we're practically talking about the same thing. The 'open file as' is a window command when right-click on the file (in this case, the .indd). I have tried that route already, but window doesn't recognize the executable and the "Always open with" checkbox is also gray out. I have already reset the default software for psd and ai to cs2, and only the indd is not responsive at all.
And the even weirder thing is that this only happens on some computer. for instance, i have run the same installation procedure on another pc/xp sp2 computer, and everything works fine. Both computers have the same os, same hardware, and same adobe cs3 software (w/ different serial key)
    > registry hack
hmm... that's an idea. Do yall know anything about it? Please do keep me (and anybody plagued with this issue) posted.
    thanks.

  • Optical Audio Output Settings Question

    Hey peoples!
Do you guys know.. on either the Macbook or iMac, is there any way to keep a toslink/optical cable plugged in to the digital audio out port, and switch between the internet speakers and the optical through software?
I only need sound on the surround speakers I have connected about half the time, and the other half the built-in speakers are fine. But in Sound settings only "digital out" is selectable when I have the cable plugged in, and I'd love to not have to plug and unplug the cable over and over again.
Thanks in advance for any info/assistance

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
No, there is a micro switch build into the output jack that tells the Audio MIDI Setup if you have something plugged in or not.

  • Setting Default File Associations

I've only seen this problem in my Adobe products, so I'm asking here first.
My company has been using Adobe products for ages, and much of our artwork is in old Pagemaker formats (.pmd) and with the update to Adobe Creative Cloud, the newest version of the appropriate application, InDesign CC, is unable to open them. Which I understand, at some point things have to become unsupported or these applications would be enormous. I also have InDesign CS6, which IS still capable of opening the files.
I went into Windows Explorer to try and set the default program for .pmd files to InDesign, but it seems to be incapable of saving that setting. It shows me default options, and a dropdown with extra programs that may work, then I click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\InDesign CS6 and select InDesign.exe. When it returns to the programs list, InDesign isn't there. Now my PMD's are trying to open in Photoshop CC. (why it tries that as opposed to in design I have no idea.)
    Please help!

That's a helpful peice of advice Peter.
That said, this isn't about assigning blame, it's about getting help.
Windows and Adobe aren't interfacing properly. I don't care who's at fault, because I think both have created quality products that I have and will continue to use. This is a glitch. A malfunction. They happen. But when noone takes any responsibility for the problem it leaves me with noone to go to for help. Technical support has turned into the same kind of business as Insurance. Do everything you can to do absolutely nothing to help. And the worst part is that the companies have farmed out their tech support to helpful users, like yourself, whom I believe has nothing to do with the Adobe company, you're just incredibly helpful and patient. People like you are wonderful, but the fact that Adobe leans so heavily upon you (having answered fully half or more of my adobe issues) is no less than average for business these days. And it's sad, because there was a time when companies supported their products, to the point of being able to call them and they'd get windows on a conference call to make sure -someone- got the problem fixed.
Again it's not about blame, it's just about fixing the problem.
But I do thank you very much for the suggestion. I'd imagine I'm not going to have much of a choice in my ability to do this via windows explorer, so I do appreciate the helpful suggestion for how to work around it as best one can.
In truth I didn't expect much in the way of support for a product depreciated for what... a decade?

  • QUERY on Audio Output/Settings on LED 24" Display

    Hello all.
Our company plans on getting a new 24" LED Display as part of our upgrade process.
In the past, because our Mac Pros are connected to external speakers that can be turn on and off, and because we are in an open office space set-up, so we normally would not disturb others. We put on our earphones.
The new LED Display comes with built-in speakers, *can it be individually turn off/on*, and still able to listen through ear phones?
    Thanks and cheers

Yes, under Preferences > Sounds you can specify the output. Just change it from Display Audio to something else.
