Default file opener?

This questions involves all of the iWork '08 applications.
How do I set these applications to be the default application for opening files sent to me?
In other words, when I receive a .ppt file and double-click to open, my computer uses Adobe to attempt to open. With .doc and .xls files, my computer uses AppleWorks. I can open these files in iWork by using CTRL->Open with...->Numbers/Keynote/Pages....and when I do that it tells me that Adobe/AppleWorks is the default.
So again, how do I change this so that I can double-click the file and have it open in the appropriate iWork application? Thanks.

Hello
This question is not specific to iWork's products, it's a generic one.
Select the icon of one of those files (say a xxx.ppt one)
Press cmd + I to display the Showt file info window.
In this window you will see an "Open with" menu.
Navigate to the wished application, here Keynote
Select it
then click onto the "Change all" button
After that, double clicking a xxx.ppt file's icon will open it in Keynote
Using the same process you will be able to link .doc files to Pages
and .xls files to Numbers.

  • Change default file- open

How do you change the initial path that file->open looks in? I cannot seem to change this to a folder that is predefined to hold *.sql files.
Sql Developer 2.1 I am using.

Can't be done, but sqldev should remember previously used paths and make easily accessible buttons for them in the left margin. Setting Preferences - Database - Worksheet - Select default path to look for scripts can also help.

  • Making InDesign CS5.5 default file opener?

    Hi there,
I have InDesign CS5.5 installed on my PC (Windows 7). Yesterday I installed Adobe Creative Suite 3 to add Photoshop CS3 as Photoshop Elements 9 doesn't do CMYK. Now all my InDesign documents are attempting to open automatically in InDesign CS3 (which is part of the old Suite bundle).
How do I change settings (I tried associating file type with program, no joy) so that InDesign files open in CS5.5 by default?
    Thanks
    Jamie

Try reassociating the INDD files with CS5.5 by right clicking an INDD file and choosing open with. Browse to the EXE for InDesign CS5.5. This may or may not work.
Installing out of order is not a very good idea. You may well be better off uninstalling everything and reinstalling in order.

  • Customizing default file open areas

Is there any way to customize where Adobe looks to open Adobe files when I try to open an Adobe file?  I don't store my documents under "my documents" and I'm about six clicks away before I get to my default directory.  Thank you.

Create a short-cut link in the My_Documents to your folder. You are then only 1 extra click away. As far as Acrobat goes, there is no default you can easily change, if any at all. (It would be in the registry if there is one.)

  • File Open strange behaviour

In File > Open, the shortcuts on the left side don't work (Desktop and My Documents). Within our company, these are stored outside the PC on the network, so whatever PC I use i get my own desktop and My Docyuments available. But, SQL Developer can't find these, even when I use the Location drop down list. If I put the mouse over the My documents button/link, the location is shown correctly (My Documents (\\WINSVXXX\My_Username$\My Documents). In Help>About, then tab Properties the property user.home shows correctly \\WINSVXXX\My_Username$. Can it be that SQL Developer accesses the network as a different user (anonymous?) so that it can't find the location? This is the first application that I know of that can't handle this.
Strangely enough, on Tools > Preferences > Worksheet the Browse button for "Select default path to look for scripts" works perfectly! I want that dialog for the normal file>open dialog.
Is there any way i can get this to work?

Thanks for this quick reply. Yes, the $ is present in the real path and yes, mapping seems to work. If it is this easy, why doesn't the default file>open work, this looks like a bug? It is not that userfriendly if every user (hundreds) should map there own drive letter to get this to work.

  • I have recently updated my CC programs to the latest version and now all of my files wont open by default into their respective programs, only if I open the program and go to file open and open the file from there. How can I fix this?

I have recently updated my CC programs to the latest version (CC2014) and now all of my files wont open by default into their respective programs, only if I open the program and go to file>open and open the file from there. How can I fix this?
I have tried 'Open with' and the version of the program now installed on my computer isn't even suggested as an option and when I browse for it, the file wont open with it anyway

On Windows (don't know about Mac), the latest version will always take over the file association, and become the default for indd files. It's impossible to change it.
But there is a plugin for ID that makes this possible. Never tried it myself.

  • PDF export with link to document defaulting to "Open a web link" instead of "Open a file"

I have a MS Access database and I'm trying to export reports to PDF (I have Acrobat XI Pro) that include a hyperlink to another document on the same drive on my computer.  I have tested this with hyperlinked email addresses, and emails export fine to PDF and are still functional, opening a new email in Outlook.  The hyperlinks to documents work fine in MS Access, opening a Word, PDF, or other document when clicked.
When I export to PDF, the links to documents say, "This document is trying to connect to: file:" and my filepath.  If I say "Allow," the link tries to open in my default web browser, which comes up blank.  I've tested this on other computers in our office too.  When I right-click the link, I have the option to "Open weblink as a new document" -- this opens the document successfully, but won't be very helpful or fast for our staff.  When I examine the link with Tools - Add or Edit Link, I see that the link's action defaulted to "Open a web link" when the PDF was created.  This seems like it should be "Open a file."  To see if "Open a file" would work in theory, I tried creating a test button in a blank PDF and made the "mouse up" action "Open a file" and linked to various documents on my computer.  Each time, the button does not react to being clicked at all, like nothing happened.
I also tried making a basic Word doc with just the hyperlink to another document.  It works fine in Word, but, when saved as a PDF, the hyperlink does the same behavior-- tries to connect to the web instead of opening the file on the computer.
I have a lot of experience building Acrobat PDF forms and working in Acrobat, and I'm almost certain I've created links that open another file on the computer in Acrobat before, but I'm out of ideas and an internet search isn't turning up much.  I welcome any suggestions for things to try.  Thank you!

This is what I currently have, and it attempts to open in a web browser.  Do you know of a setting in Acrobat I might need to change, or any other solution to tell Acrobat to open the "file:" URL as a document, not try to start the web browser?

  • How to make InDesign files open by default in CC, not CC 2014

Now that I have 2 version of InDesign on my mac (10.8.5 - Mountain Lion), both CC and CC 2014, how can I make my .indd files open by default in CC instead of the new 2014 version?
I've tried selecting a .indd file, opening the Info panel and changing the "Open with:" option to "Adobe InDesign CC.app 9.2.2.103". I then click Change All.. and confirming. However, this does not work. Double-clicking any .indd file still opens in the 2014 version and the Info panel for any .indd file still shows the 2014 version as the "Open with:" default.
    Any ideas?

Here are three methods. The first two are free but don't give you exactly what you want. The third requires a third-party utility and works perfectly.
    (1) Right-click on a file and from the menu choose Open With... then choose the version of InDesign you want.
    (2) Create an alias for your InDesign versions and place them on your Desktop. Drag your InDesign file onto the alias of the version you want to open.
    (3) Purchase Soxy from Rorohiko:
    Soxy | Rorohiko Workflow Resources
NOTE: Rorohiko says the version that supports InDesign CC 2014 is coming soon, they're waiting to test the new version before they release it.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 Editor : File/Open - How can I set a default folder ?

    Hi
When I am in the Photoshop Elements 11 Editor and I want to load a picture from "My Pictures" on my hard disk ...
    I go the menu item File/Open ...
Right now PE11 opens the last picture folder I worked with before ...
How can I make PE11 show the root directory of the "My Pictures" Library.
I do not want people to see which pictures I have been working with lately.

Before quitting the app after you have worked clic Edit->Preferences and click Reset preferences on next launch.
This would reset the settings and next time it will open my pictures by default with file open,
    Thanks,
    Garry

  • Set thumbnail view as default in the File open dialog box

When I hit File/Open in PS, the dialog box always opens in"details" and I have to hit the select view icon and chose "thumbnails". I've looked in preferences but can't find anything to change the default to Thumbnails. Is it that you have to do this somewhere in Windows OS ?

What versions of Photoshop and Windows are you running?
I ask, because running Photoshop CS5 and Windows 7 x64 when I select a view - e.g., Large Icons (which yields thumbnails) it sticks.  Make sure you actually open a file after making the change.

  • How to set default path for file open in SQL Developer

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle SQL Developer. Everytime when I open a file, it will default to the install directory. It is hurtingmy hand because I have to click back to the folder where I put my sql statements.
Is there any way to set the Home or Work button to point to the location I like? or add anther button to point to my folder? I just don't want to click 5 to 10 times to open a file.

There are a few things. One is that you can set a working directory for any files you run in the SQL Worksheet i.e. @myfile.sql will pick up this directory.
You can also set a preference for exporting files.
Also if you use File -> Open, it should remember where you were the last time, so you hunt the first time, then it remembers for the next time. There is a bug for ctrl-O that always goes back to the original directory, but that has been fixed for the next patch release, so ctrl -O will also remember where you were last.
The differences here are because we are dependent on the IDE from JDeveloper, and so we don't have full control over the Save and Open dialogs. We are aware of this frustration and are planning to change this for a future release.

    Sue

  • How do I set the default folder for file - open file... ?

When I save a file, photo, etc., the default folder for OPENING a file becomes the last folder I SAVED to - even after closing and reopening Firefox. Is there a way to maintain the same default folder for opening files?
    Thanks.

  • How can I change the default "file type" in the open file dialog when using Firefox on certain web pages?

I work for a bankruptcy attorney. We use the Court's file upload to file our documents. When I am on the Court's site and I have to pick a file to upload, the "open file" dialog box pops up. In Firefox, the default "file type" is always "image" files. I need it to be "all files". How can I change this setting?

    Two observations.
First — "Tools-> ...." is specific to Acrobat X and XI. It did not exist prior to Acrobat X.
Second — Acrobat 9 Pro / Standard (nor earlier release) does not support viewing a PDF page containing a scanned image and performing a right-click  ... Save Image As.
The context menu provided by Acrobat 9 Pro with a right-click on a scanned image is:
The context menu, from a right-click with the TouchUp Object tool selected, for Acrobat 9 Pro is:

  • Will EC support setting default file type and Open With from file menu?

The default file types I can live without, but at least allow for Open With on right click from Windows Explorer.
I currently have EC set in the Open With programs list, but EC does not comply for any files I opt to open it with (.css, .php, .html etc).
EC open but not the file I choose.
Also, even though the above use case is not ideal when if I do attempt an Open With when EC is already open, a new application session starts instead of attempting to open in the currently active app frame. It would be ideal to allow for single app frame, multiple files when Open With is employed.

    Hey Darrell,
Thanks for the feedback. How Edge Code treats files is definitely something we know isn't ideal and it's something we're looking at fixing soon. There's currently a story on the Brackets backlog that adresses the Open With issue - https://trello.com/c/GhF1Bgf9
And it based on howit ranks in that priority it looks like we could potentially take that into Edge Code over the next couple of months.
This is definitely a feature that we think is important before we consider ourselves 1.0 so it's high priority.
