Default gateway airport extreme

I am helping a friend with a new Airport Extreme set up. The internet provider (satellite) is requiring a unique Default Gateway number to be entered however we cannot find the field for this in the Airport utility and searching the Internet has not helped us.
Could someone give me a suggestion on how to set this up?
Thanks

Default Gateway = Router Address in the AirPort Utility.

  • Factory default Internal Airport Extreme

Is there a factory reset for an internal airport extreme card on a mac mini? I am not able to set up a wireless linksys router. It was working last week by the way, then I bought and installed the software drivers for a linksys wireless n but it didn't work as the airport is for g only. So i am trying to go back to my wrt54g I was using last week but the airport card keeps saying it failed?

Also, what would be the absolute minimum settings for the wireless part of the linksys router, ie security settings, network mode, security mode, channel, etc. Here are the settings I have right now
    1. Basic wireless settings, Network Mode (mixed), Network name (linksys), Channel(6), SSID (enabled)
    2. Wireless Security settings, Security mode (WPA Personal), Algorithms (TKIP), Shared Key (six letters and 2 numbers), Key Renewal (3600 seconds),
    3. Wireless MAC Filter (disabled)
    4. Advanced wireless settings, I haven't touched any of them. Authentication type is (Auto). Secure easy setup (enabled)

  • Trying to connect airport extreme to comcast provided ubee modem. Light on airport green, but no internet access.

Attempting to connect ubee d3.0 comcast modem to airport extreme base station.
Light on airport will go green, but I cannot connect to the internet.
I'm sure it has something to do with DHCP/NAT - as the airport extreme is getting an IP address, but then assiging a 10.x.x.x IP to my computer
but attempts at putting it in bridge mode just causes the light to go yellow and give warning of "No DNS Server" and "No internet connection"
I am able to connect to the internet when I connected directly to the modem.
    I'm running OS 10.8.5
previously had DSL modem and connected after a few easy tweaks of the NAT settings before. am unsure what the issue is on this on... have used up my rather limited tech knowledge.
    any thoughts?
    Thank you!

Ubee provides both cable modems and gateway devices. What is the model number of yours?

By default, the AirPort Extreme would performing as a router with both NAT & DHCP enabled. Also, it would act as a DHCP server for the local network and provide out Private IP addresses in the range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.1.1.200. The WAN-side IP address of the Extreme should be a Public one and provided to you by your ISP via the Ubee modem. Did you perform a "factory default" reset on the Extreme before attempting to connect it to the modem?

  • Block Ports On Airport Extreme

Yesterday my Linux Gateway crashed.  It was an old computer and I had been thinking of replacing it with my Airport Extreme.  Now, that the old computer has crashed, I am forced to do this.
I know that I can do port mapping to forward incoming ports to specific computers, but I am curious whether I can block certain ports.  I would like not to allow, pinging, and telnet for instance.  I have a lot of computers behind this router and don't really want to block each and everyone.  Is there a way to do this?
    Is this considered a Gateway?
I am curious about port mapping.  I created two maps.  POP and SMTP.  When doing this, it asks for an internal private IP address.  I gave it the address of my computer that has my mail client on it.  So I assumed that this would allow these ports to go to that IP.  But, my wife's computer has her mail client on it.  (we both use MS Outlook).  She was able to get her mail and send mail.  So, what is the deal with the private IP address?
I would also like to be able to VNC and RDP into several different computers on my network.  On my previous Gateway, I set up port forwarding by using bogus ports to each machine.  (ie. incoming port 50001 would go to my internal ip of 10.0.1.101 and port 50002 would go to my internal 10.0.2.102, etc).  I am assuming that I can do this on the airport extreme as well.
I have STF for these, but really haven't found my answers (or maybe just not searching by the right words).  Can anyone help me on this?

By default, the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) blocks ALL incoming ports. Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility does not offer any means to configure ports specifically. As a workaround, you could port forward any ports that you wanted "blocked" to a fictitious device on the local network.
    Is this considered a Gateway?
A term "Gateway" can have a number of interpretations. In general computer networking terms, a Gateway is a network device that is used to connect devices across two different media. In the most commonly used case, these media would be Internet & Local Area Network.
Gateways are also used interchangeably to mean the same thing as routers, modem or combination router/modems and often leads to confusion.
So to answer your question, yes, the AEBS is a Gateway device.
The problem with port mapping is that even though you can map multiple ports to a single device, you cannot map a single port to multiple devices.
Did you make sure to map ALL ports used by these two mail protocols? That is there are secure ports used by these protocols as well. It may be possible that your wife's mail client used one of these instead or that her client is configured to use other ports to receive or send mail.
    Yes.

  • Adjusting Airport Extreme 11n to work with Linksys Adapter 11b.  Possible?

What adjustments, if possible, do I make to my AirPort Extreme 11n Router to allow my Linksys Desktop Adapter 11b to connect another PC wirelessly to the Internet?

By default, the Airport Extreme base station will support both 802.11b as well as 802.11g connections. You can use the Airport Admin Utility to check the settings of your Base Station, to make sure this default setting has not been altered to function with 802.11g connections only.
There are a few other considerations when attempting to connect PCs (particularly those running older versions of Windows) wirelessly to an Airport Base Station. A lot of tips and tricks can be found via the links at http://tech.ifelix.net/index.html

  • Airport Extreme won't connect to new Vizio TV for internet apps

I have my passwords correct and yet my new Vizio TV says that "Download Not Available" when I try to connect to my wireless Airport Extreme so I can get apps on the TV. It shows my Apple Network number but with a closed lock new to the icon. Trouble shooting says I might need to "disable MAC address filtering in wireless router." Don't know what to do! The airport is set up correctly so I can use my laptop and iPod without trouble. Can anyone help? Thanks.

It shows my Apple Network number but with a closed lock new to the icon.
It sounds like your Vizio TV sees that the Apple network as enabled for wireless encryption ... is it? That is do you have it configured for WPA or WPA2 encryption? If so, you will need to configure the TV to be able to access the network, just like your laptop or iPod.
Trouble shooting says I might need to "disable MAC address filtering in wireless router."
By default, your AirPort Extreme does not have MAC address filtering enabled. Did you configure it for Access Control in the AirPort Utility? If so, you would need to add the MAC address of the wireless adapter used in the Vizio.

  • Airport extreme 5ghz?

I have a brand airport extreme.  Do i need to create a separate 5ghz network (I see setting for this on the router) or does it use whichever band is best on the one network?
    Thanks for the help.

By default, the AirPort Extreme broadcasts on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands using the same wireless network name.
The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best signal based on their own capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Extreme.
This is probably the setting that most users should use in order to keep things simple.
Other users swear by assigning a separate name to the 5 GHz and then "pointing" devices at that network name. I've never found any advantage to doing it this way, but others will disagree.
If you are the type that likes to keep things simple, go with the default settings on the AirPort Extreme,
On the other hand, if you like to tinker and experiment, try assigning a separate name to the 5 Ghz band and spend some time with this to decide if it is right for you.

  • Airport Extreme trouble shooter pop up

I just started having the AIrport Extreme trouble shooter pop up on my mac book pro when started or restarted with this message.
"This Apple WiFI base station does not have any DNS server addresses and might have problems connecting to the network."
I installed Lion and icloud several weeks ago but the error message has just started popping up.

DNS is the equivalent of the Yellow Pages for the Internet. Normally your computer would be provided with the IP addresses of the DNS servers used by your ISP automatically since most computers, by default, are configured as DHCP clients. DHCP is what "pushes" these IP addresses to your device.
Also, by default, your AirPort Extreme router has a built-in DHCP server which would get these DNS IP addresses from the ISP and supply them to any wired or wireless client that connects to the Extreme's network.
You can determine which DNS IP addresses that your Mac got by looking at System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > DNS tab
You should find the DNS server IP address(es) provided by your ISP.

  • Setting up airport extreme with optus netgear gateway cg3000

I currently have an imac running the internet through an optus branded netgear gateway cg3000. Lately my wifi signal strength and range has been very poor.
The more I read the more confused I get but I think that  Optus disable bridging mode (whatever that is!) on this modem/router so that is not an option for a setup.
From what I've been able to work out I think  I want to buy an airport extreme to hopefully improve my wifi but still run the internet to the imac through Ethernet connection.
    SO
    1. Do i simply turn the wifi button on the front of the modem off, and leave the Ethernet cord running between the netgear and imac?
    2. then connect the airport extreme to the  netgear to run wifi as the router - what cord/cable do I need?
    3. Does a cord also have to go between the imac and the airport extreme (so i can use the airport utility to setup?)
    4. And then what options do i need to select to run it all like this in the airport utility - even a link to a step by step guide would be great if I just know what "mode" or whatever i am going for.
    5. Lastly do i need to change any of the settings for my netgear router (I mean the kind of settings you access thorugh the website adress that looks like: 192.168.0.1 address to access the router settings before to change the channel to try and improve wifi with some but limited/short lived success).
Thanks so much for any advice.

Sorry can't find an edit button
    The one in the AEBS..
It is here. Open the airport utility and click the icon of the AEBS.. or TC or AEx whatever.
If you mean edit of the CG3000.. I don't know.
yes I can switch off NAT through a "secret setting" link (thanks to the afore-not-mentioned site!).
If you have NAT off in the CG3000 then you can easily setup the AEBS as router.. you simply reset it .. voila.. it is now back to default.. which is router.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
So is it important to then do things in the right order?
Eg: do i change the settings in netgear turning off Nat first
    The order is important.
Change the settings in the Airport first. Once it is in router mode.. then you turn off the NAT in the CG3000 and power cycle it.. and then power cycle the AEBS..
No luck just do power cycling again with a longer gap.. try 20min off instead of 5min.
The AEBS must show the public IP as its WAN address.
Before doing anything with airport utility or is airport utility unnecessary when I am using Airport extreme as full router?
You must always have access to the AEBS at all times.. you can get access to the CG3000 by plugging ethernet cable into it directly when you need it.

  • Why does my airport give wrong default gateway dhcp?

I have a fancy AirPort Extreme Base Station running 7.7.3.
It was recommended as a very good wireless access point, which it is, purely in terms of signal strength and connectivity.
In terms of easy configuration, this thing is a nightmare. Someone once told me, "Get Apple products, they just WORK!" Not in this case. I am using the base station to provide access on my home network wirelessly and wired on the same layer 2. DHCP is assigning 192.168.1.250 as the default gateway, but the IP of the base station is 192.168.1.1, so none of my hosts on DHCP are able to get Internet. I cannot find or see a way to correct the DHCP gateway assignment.
In addition, I have a single wired Windows host. It does not get the DHCP reservation I set up for it. I cannot for the life of me figure out why. MAC is right. ipconfig /release and /renew fails to assign the correct address every time tho.
I have one Mac in the house. It too fails to obtain the right gateway IP. My question: why is the base station assigning 192.168.1.250 as a gateway when it's own internal IP is 192.168.1.1????
I have owned many home access points. This is the first one I couldn't assign the internal IP to as a gateway address, and I can't assign a specific subnet mask to pair down the broadcast domain. Why are the options to configure my internal network so limited?

    LaPastenague wrote:
Why are the options to configure my internal network so limited?
So it will be easy to configure.
Sadly this means there is no way to fix things when they go wrong.
How did you manage to get 192.168.1.x .. as the default IP of the TC is 10.0.1.1 and it is well worth leaving it alone.
Post a few screenshots and we can help you fix it up. Mostly.. probably.
So the default is 10.0.1.1, but I didn't want an entire class A range wide open on my home network, so I chose the class C 192.168.X.X (why is Apple still doing classful networks?!?)
Here's some helpful screenshots, starting with the opening screen.... note the router's IP:
This is my AirPort's basic info, and the networks. There are two ethernet ports in back, one connected to the cable modem, the other to BADGER, my PC. BADGER will be the example in all my DHCP woes...:
This is BADGER's manually assigned IP info. I would like to set up a reservation for it on the AirPort so I can just switch it to DHCP and be done.
As you can see, my gateway is 192.168.1.1, which is the internal IP of the AirPort extreme. I use public DNS servers, so I add those manually on the PC. So, using this info, I create the reservation:
Here you can see the DHCP scope I've assigned: .1.2-.1.50. I also set up a reservation for BADGER. No where on here is a way to specify the router's internal IP, which is 192.168.1.1 - it's the only gateway address that works. There's also no way to apply a more restrictive subnet mask to limit the number of hosts on my internal side, but that's another issue. Moving on...
I apply the reservation. I click update. The AirPort extreme router updates itself. I switch BADGER to DHCP, and release/renew. Here's where it gets interesting:
Here's what the router wants to assign me. The MAC address is the same as in the reservation, but the AirPort Extreme gives me 192.168.1.129? That's not even in the range I defined. Also, note the gateway address. It wants to assign 192.168.1.250 ... but that's wrong, as indicated by the lack of network connectivity in the system tray. If I configure my PC to use 192.168.1.1, then traffic routes off my home network just fine because that's the internal IP of the AirPort Extreme. So, without getting into this product's shortcomings as an actual configurable home router:
    - Why does it assign its gateway as 192.168.1.250 when it's really 192.168.1.1?
    - Why does it ignore my DHCP reservation and assign a completely out-of-scope IP?
All of my devices are getting .250 as the gateway. Wireless and BADGER, even my lone Mac. Can anyone shed some light?

  • How do I maintain my Airport Extreme network with my new Comcast wireless gateway?

    Hi all,
I've just signed up Internet access through Xfinity. Today, they sent me a new wireless gateway, which I am willing to use. But I would also like to maintain the network I've currently been using, which is an Airport Extreme hooked up to our DSL modem. Currently, I have a Brother wireless printer, our TiVo, and a Roku streaming stick on this network, as well as all of our Macs and mobile devices. I have been reading about "bridge mode," and selecting this mode once my AE is hooked up through the Ethernet cable to our new wireless gateway seems like the way to go if I'd like to keep the AE network I have now. Then, I can select either the new Xfinity network or the AE network, depending on my need. Is that correct? Will I have to reassign all of these peripherals to the AE network once it's been placed in bridge mode, or will they all be able to find that network automatically once the AE is plugged into the new modem/router? Also, is there a way to connect the AE to the new Xfinity equipment wirelessly, or is it best to connect through Ethernet? I have probably betrayed my ignorance more than a few times in this post, so please be kind and explain it to me like I'm a seven-year-old. Thanks in advance for any and all help!
    -B

Call Comcast and ask them for instructions to configure their "wireless gateway" as a simple modem. Sometimes the terminology they use is "transparent bridging". Have them walk you through it, since all such devices are configured differently. It is usually through a web page but you will need a password to change its settings. You ought to turn off its wireless network also, so ask about that too.
Then, you will have essentially what you have been accustomed to using: an Extreme connected to a box with an Ethernet cable, doing everything it used to do when you had DSL. Your AirPort Extreme is almost certainly a better router than whatever junk Comcast supplies, and to reconfigure it as a bridge would remove all the features that make it so.
You probably won't need to change a thing on your Extreme, other than to unplug it and plug it in again after reconfiguring the "wireless gateway".

  • How-To Set Up with Uverse Gateway with Airport Extreme

I just spent hours figuring this out so I thought it would be helpful to someone. Maybe, maybe not. My goal was to get Back to My Mac turned on...but this should also be how you set up your wireless network if you have both an Airport Extreme and a Uverse Gateway.
As I was trying to setup BTMM, I got a "double NAT" error. To use BTMM, you have to use either Time Capsule or Airport Extreme, so that NAT has to be enabled. That meant I had to figure out how to turn off U-verse's. I looked through the settings but saw nothing about it. Several hours of research--and a useless support call to AT&T--I finally figured it out. Here's the configuration you need, in brief.
On the Airport Extreme, under Internet > Internet Connections, Connection Sharing must be set to "Share a public IP address". Then under the NAT button, Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol must be checked.
Now, unless you doe rest of this configuration, you will get a double DHCP error. So, in the Uverse Gateway settings, you must do this:
    1. Under Wireless, click the option to DISABLE wireless. Click Save.
    2. Under Firewall, click the option with DMZ in the name. On this page, choose your Airport Extreme (whatever you named it). Then scroll down and choose the option that says "Allow All Applications (DMZPlus Mode)". Save that configuration. DO A HARD RESET ON THE AIRPORT EXTREME. Then that should enable a single NAT protocol and BTMM will be on its way. And your wireless network will be set up properly.

Will the above method work on a set up with a Verizon Modem to a DLink wireless router to a Time Capsule?
I know of no reason why it would not. Whenever there is another router ahead of the Time Capsule, the Time Capsule must be configured in Briddge Mode. My network has 4 routers. The "main" router is setup to handle DHCP and NAT and the other 3 routers are setup in Bridge Mode. No problems.
Weird thing is Air Video set up tells me I have a double NAT
Double NAT occurs when you have two routers on a network both set up to handle DHCP and NAT services. Your Verizon "modem" may be a gateway....a combination modem/router on the same chassis. If that's the case, then every other router on the network must be confgured as a "Bridge".
If you have the "main" router on the network setup to handle DHCP and NAT, in theory, you can have multiple other routers on the network as long as they are all setup in Bridge Mode. In Bridge Mode, DHCP and NAT are turned off, so the other routers simply pass through the network information from the main router. It's by far the easiest way to configure multiple routers without having to go into special DMZ, port mapping, etc type of configurations.

  • Connect to Linksys Cable Gateway via AirPort Extreme Base Station?

Thank you in advance for any replies.
I have the following new setup:
A G3 Blue tower running OS X 10.4.10 is successfully connected to the internet via a Linksys WCG200 Cable Gateway connected to RCN's cable internet service. The WCG200 unit has wireless capacity though it's connected to the G3 tower via ethernet cable.
A second Mac (G3 iMac DV running OS X 10.4.10) is in another room in the office. I'd like to set it up with internet by wirelessly connecting with the existing WCG200 unit using an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) I've recently acquired. To ensure a smooth process, I reset the AEBS to factory settings and installed the AEBS software (version 4.2) onto the iMac DV. Finally I plugged in the AEBS into the iMac DV using an ethernet cable plugged into the AEBS's WAN port (AirPort Admin Utility advised me to do so).
That's the hardware configuration. Working out the software and configuration details is proving 'niggly'.
First, I used the AirPort Setup Assistant to configure the AEBS. I told it to Set up a new Base Station, then to set it up as connecting to the internet using a Cable modem (the top option of two—the second was to set it up with internet through a LAN). I set up the name and passwords for the Base Station and had the utility configure the AEBS accordingly.
No internet connection occurred. I tried using the Internet Connect utility in the Applications folder, but no button or visible option for connecting via AirPort appeared, as the Setup Guide indicated it should, only a button for a VPN appeared.
I called Apple and asked whether it was even possible to connect to the internet using the AEBS talking wirelessly to the WCG200 unit. A tech told me it could be done by going into the AirPort Administration Utility, going into Configuration, clicking on the WDS tab and inputting the MAC address for the WCG200 unit, then going into the Airport tab and typing in the channel that the WCG200 is using. Note that the WCG200 unit has 3 MAC addresses listed; one each for “modem MAC address,” “WAN-MAN MAC address,” and “WAN-DATA MAC address”. I used the “modem MAC address.
The Apple tech added that it might need further tweaking, but that Apple couldn’t provide this tweaking and that I might check various forums if need be.
I followed the Tech’s advice, at which point the utility informed me that it couldn't use DHCP or NAT with this setup’ and to make sure that the "Distribute IP Addresses" checkbox was deselected under the Internet tab. This I did, but it was already deselected. I told the utility to update the AEBS accordingly, and restarted everything, including the 2 Macs and the WCG200.
    Result:
    No connection.
Tried it again with the Ethernet plugged into the AEBSs LAN port, still no connection.
Help! Can’t I get the AEBS to even see the WCG200? I know wireless is properly functioning in the WCG200 because another user with a Windows laptop connects to it wirelessly. The Mac Tech also mentioned that this could be relatively easy with an AirPort Express piece of hardware (Card? Base station?) but that it would be difficult with the Airport Extreme Base Station.
At this point we’re willing to spend $100 on getting this up. What would be our best option in terms of equipment, or can connectivity be accomplished with what we have?
    Thanks again,
    skyheart

skyheart, Welcome to the discussion area!
In theory using WDS would provide what you need.
In reality the Linksys device is not compatible with Apple's WDS and therefore this will not work.

  • Airport Extreme "default password" error

After resetting Extreme, I cannot rectify the amber light error for "default password in use".
The password is not set to the default.
Have tried various new passwords, but after updating each time nothing changes.
All internet and wireless connections apper to be working 100% - it's just annoying the **** out of me..........

Open AirPort Utility 6.1, click on the AirPort Extreme icon, and click Edit in the window that appears
Click the Base Station tab at the top of the window
Edit out / backspace the Base Station Password and enter a new password. Write that down.
Do the same to Verify Password
Click Update at the lower right of the window and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart
You should have a green light, unless you still have other default settings that need to be changed.

  • Airport Extreme configuration with Linux server gateway.

    Hello all-
I am sorry if this is a repeat post.... I looked and could not find anything. I am trying to set up a linux server and have it act as a gateway between my Airport Extreme and my modem. I am wondering if there is a way to set a static IP on the airport extreme, or do I assign the address on the NIC in the linux box. The internal network will have OS X, Windows and Linux on it.
Also is there a flavor of linux that works better than others with Apple equipment?
Thank you for your patience and help!
    Cheers!

I am wondering if there is a way to set a static IP on the airport extreme
Yes, there is. You would do so using the AirPort Utility. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Configure IPv4 = Manually) You can then enter the desired IP address information as required for your network configuration.
