Default Mail Account Changes

I have multiple mail accounts enabled on the iPhone. Periodically, the default mail account keeps reverting to the first account on the list.
Any idea what causes this, and how to stop it?

That is odd. I have reset my iPhone several times and this has not happened to me. I have six accounts, and my default account is the second one in the list.
I would suggest changing the default account to another account, deleting and recreating your default account, and changing it back. Must be something funky with your default account and the way it was saved. Worth a try.

  • How can I change the default mail account in mail v6.3

I have in my mail preferences four accounts. The first one is a "Google IMAP" and all others are just "IMAP". When I'm composing a new email it defaults to the wrong account. Intuitively I think the the first account listed under mail preference would be the default one, but I'm unable to move the order. How to I change this?

To change your default mail account, you just have to change the mail accounts order in the Mail sidebar. First of all, if you don't see your mailboxes under "Inbox" (at the top of the sidebar), press the arrow, and your mail accounts will appear.
Now, you just have to drag the mail account you want by default to the first position

  • How Can I Change Default Mail Account in Mail Application?

I have 2 Gmail accounts. Gmail1 and Gmail2. When I changed the password of my Gmail1 account - which used to be my default mail account - it changed in the Mail application so that now Gmail2 is my default mail account.
I know that usually you can go
Preferences -> Accounts -> And on the list on the left you can just drag the mail account you want to be the default account to the top of the list. But it doesn't work. It's just not possible to move them around on the list, they are all stuck.
Can anyone help me understand why I can't reorder my mail accounts, or if there is another way to which I can change my default mail account?
    Thanks.

    Hey wilhel10002,
Thanks for the question. My answer to your question relies on what you determine to be the default account. If it is simply which account is at the top of the list, yes you can re-order the accounts in the sidebar as needed (not from Mail > Preferences > Accounts).
However, I personally perceive the default account as the account that I send new messages from. This behavior can be adjusted in Mail > Preferences > Composing > Send new messages from
    Mail (Mountain Lion): Composing preferences

  • Mail in iOS 7 changes default mail account after entering addresses?

I just noticed that the Mail app in iOS 7 changes the sent from email address from my default to another account I have after entering in the send to address. When I first create the new email the correct default email address is showing (iCloud) but after I add any send to address it changes to another account (Hotmail) as the sent from account.
I checked my settings and iCloud is still set as the default account, I can click and change it before sending the email but I think this may be a bug unless there is something I missed.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Oh, and just to add, whilst under Settings > Mail it does indeed state 'default mail account to use when an application outside of mail attempts to send mail'.  However also when you are in the Mail app and on the main screen where you can see all your mailboxes, the Mail App also needs a 'default' account, and in my experience/opinion this is pulled from the Default account within Settings > Mail rather than which ever mailbox is top of the list within the Mail app (didnt work for me!)
But regardless, I have sent an email from an app outside of Mail and the issue is encountered:-  I have my virgin.net as my default email (via Settings > Mail).  I go into the Photo app, and select a photo to email.  My virgin.net email is showing in the From box - so far so good.  I select an email address for the To box.  My From email address switches to my iCloud.com address.  So this is the bug.  It should not be doing this.  This is the same issue it seems encountered by the original member of this thread.  Anyone know how you alert Apple to bugs in their software?

  • Strange problem with default mail account

Just recently, the behavior of my default mail account (ATT yahoo server) has changed. This is a regular POP account, but suddenly, although mail still comes into the account as it should, the messages are not treated as new messages: there's no mail sound when mail for this account arrives, no count of new messages, and none of the new messages show the unread dot.
It still behaves normally on my computer, so I don't think it's a change on ATT's end.(These are not messages I've already read on another device, so it's not likely to be some IMAP-ish change on the server side, either.) None of my mail settings are any different than they have been. Other mail accounts via the same server still behave normally. I've tried re-syncing, power cycling, restoring, and nothing has made any difference.

Actually, it's even stranger. If I send mail to the malfunctioning account from another acct (me.com, for instance) from the iPad itself, the incoming message behaves normally. But if I do the same thing from my mac or my iPod, it comes in as pre-read.
I suspected the cause for all this weirdness was that my mail trash was gigantic, because it was a long time before I found the setting for erasing deleted messages and initially changing that didn't get rid of all the existing old messages, but now I'm not so sure about that, after all that resetting up accts.
Oh, and yes, I've checked the ports. There's a lot of port heck with ATT at the best of times, so I'm used to going there.

hmmm.. I've been complaining about this to the engineers for over a year. The storage location should be chooseable as should there also be a backup feature (as in Addressbook and iCal).
for those that want to change this... it would be cool for someone to write a non cryptic, complete 1,2,3 stepped procedure.
That is.. exactly what do you change to what in the mail user preference file? And what do you use to change it.. text edit? "[ ]" heretofor = folder
I would like to change my Mail storage location to the my [Documents] . Using Text Edit, I went into my user [Library], to [Preferences] and opened the com.apple.mail.plist and changed all the ~/Library/mail storage locations to ~/Documents/Mail
lastly I moved the [Mail] that was in the [Library] to my [Documents].
Didn't work. Restarting Mail got me into the guided set a new account (and as far as I can see there IS no way of not taking the guided set up as alledged above). There must be something, some built-in direction other than in the [Preferences] defaulting mail to be saved in the [Library] folder
If someone has done this and been successful.. a 1,2,3.. list would be apprecaited... and please don't leave any details out. Thanks

  • Unable to set default mail account in iOS

I'm unable to choose my default mail account. I have two IMAP mail accounts configured. One of the two accounts was imported using a configuration profile supplied by the mail service provider. This worked well, except that iOS doesn't seem to recognise it for the purpose of defining a default mail account. I added a third mail account and now the default account option is displayed in Settings, but the drop-down list only shows two accounts, not the one imported via the configuration profile. Is this a bug?

Resetting the phone does not delete anything from the phone.  Explain what you mean by "reset."  Are you asking or telling us you can't reinstall mail accounts.  What EXACTLY did you do?

  • I have set up my Yahoo! account to be used as default mail account on iMac. I am receiving messages, but cannot send them.  All settings appear to be right.  What can I do?

I have set up my Yahoo! account to be used as default mail account on iMac. I am receiving messages, but cannot send them.  All settings appear to be right.  What can I do?

The problems I am having are when I use Yahoo! with the iMac mail application.  Yahoo works fine on the browser.
The outgoing settings I am using are:
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): yahoo.co.uk (Offline)
    Description: yahoo.co.uk
    Server name: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    Use default ports (25, 465, 587)
    Use SSL
    Authentication: Password
    User Name:  ********@yahoo.co.uk
    Password: *************
    Of note:
I cannot stop it from saying Offline after the outgoing mail server.
I have used the same settings on my ipad and iphone and that works fine.
Really grateful if you can help.
    Thanks

  • Yahoo mail as default mail account?

Can I set up my yahoo mail account as my default mail account somehow?
    I am a newbie without a clue.

Do you intend to access your Yahoo account through Yahoo's website, or through Mail? Do you have a paid Yahoo account or a free one? You can only access free Yahoo accounts through Yahoo's website.

  • Can't change my default mail account. Only shows one account in settings

I have two email accounts on ipad2, but only one shows up as a selection option for default. Would like to change default account to the account not showing as current default account.

Your default email account is probably the one that is associated with your Apple ID email address.
Go to Settings>Mail, contacts, calendars>Mail>Default Account and see if you can change it there.

  • Mail's default mail account.

    Hi, all.
After many frustrated incidents with e-mails being sent from the wrong account, I decided to (again) try to find a solution to this problem.
In Entourage, my previous e-mail client, the solution to this problem was to create a phantom e-mail account and set it up as the default account without the proper account settings. In this case one of two things would happen: (1) I would either remember to set the proper sending account in Mail before sending a message, or (2) in case I forgot Entourage would use the default e-mail account and this would generate an error message in which case I would be allerted to the need to set the proper sending account the resend the e-mail message.
Is there a way to avoid this problem in Mail ? Can I designate no account or a phantom mail account as the default?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, drdocument.
I don't think this solution would work for me because I have Mail set-up with multiple e-mail accounts.
What happens then when I need to change the server prior to sending a message?
Thanks for your help and reply.

  • Default Mail account script

    Hello all,
I have been wracking my brain and searching the interwebs furiously for days now. Help! I am trying to create an AppleScript that will change the default account in Mail. Here's the scenario:
I use MarcoPolo to see when my laptop is at work and at home. I have it set when I connect at work to change my Network Location to Work, connect to my work servers, and launch my work programs. I would like to be able to change my default send/receive account to my work email; then change it back to my personal email at the end of my work day.
Does anyone have any suggestions/examples of scripts I could use? I know how to manually change the default account (drag it upwards in the list in Mail Accounts), but I can't figure out how to script this....
    Thanks for the help!
    -Annie

This is a setting in Mail's preferences that's not directly scriptable (it's on the 'General' tab of the preferences window).  However, you can modify the preferences file directly, like so:
if application "Mail" is running then
-- need to close mail to modify plist file
              tell application "Mail" to quit
    end if
    tell application "System Events"
-- get name of current location
              tell network preferences
set whereIam to name of current location
              end tell
-- change the following to the names of your locations and appropriate addresses (obviously)
              if whereIam is "Work" then
set outgoingEmail to "Your Work Name <[email protected]>"
              else
set outgoingEmail to "Your Home Name <[email protected]>"
              end if
      --change preferences setting
set mailPrefsFile to property list file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist"
              tell mailPrefsFile
      make new property list item with properties {name:"NewMessageFromAddress", value:outgoingEmail}
              end tell
    end tell
    -- restart mail
    tell application "Mail" to launch
if you want to set it back to automatic choosing just delete the property list item.  The outgoingEmail text string should conform to Mail's standards: that's generally Full Name <email address> as read from the accounts tab in Mail's preferences, though the email address by itself might be sufficient.  I don't know what will happen if you put in incorrect information; most likely Mail will ignore it and default to automatic assignment, but...

  • Changing Default Mail Account?

I have my mail set up with two accounts -- a POP and an IMAP.
I'm trying to use the IMAP account as my primary.
When I compose a new message Mail always defaults to the POP account and I have to remember to toggle the accounts using the "from" box.
Is there a way to swith so my IMAP address shows as the #1 and then I could switch to the POP if needed.
    Thanks

    Thanks Roam.
All my mail comes through the IMAP account (I have the POP stuff forwarded to the IMAP at my ISP's server). When I reply to a message the "from" is my IMAP address but when I compose a new message the default is my POP.
I tried sending from the IMAP and then quitting but no luck. I also wondered if maybe the order of the accounts in my preferences might be doing something but when I checked the IMAP stuff is first, the POP second.
In time I'll dump the POP so this problem isn't the end of the world but just seems strange. And every so often I forget and use the POP address and then Mail has a bit of a fit.
    Always fun!
    Thanks

  • Something is wrong with default mail account. Mail ignores the default one and uses another.

Hi! I use two accounts on Mail: @gmail.com and @mail.ru. The @mail.ru is used as default. So all answers have to be sent from mail.ru, however it is not - they go from @gmail.com. What is wrong?

When I reply to emails that were sent to my business account, Mail automatically responds using my .mac email address. It will not reply using my business account.
Very frustating and time consuming, having to go to the drop-down menu of email accounts, select my business account and then reply.
Did not work this way before the "upgrade."
Any solutions from anyone or from Apple??
