Default Messenger/browser

How do I keep Tiger from constantly changing my Default Browser back to Safari and default messenger back to ichat? It's been happening since I did the last software update earlier this week, but everytime I boot up now, I launch Firefox, and I get teh message "Firefix is not your default browser, would you like to make it?" Yes I do, then I launch Adium, and I get the same message, for chat program obviously, not browser, and I set it to yes also. Yet all I need to do is reboot and it's the same thing all over again.
It's getting annoying to the point I'm debating deleting ichat and safari to see if that helps. One of the main things I've always hated about the windows world is micro$ofts automatic defaulting to their programs. Now it seems to be slowly creeping into my Mac and I dont like it. I dont like safari, I like my plugins in Firefox, stop tryin to make me use your program micro, err, apple.

Change the default browser in Safari's preferences.
It says Firefox everytime I check. When I reboot, it changes back to safari. I tried that.

  • How to make nemo default file browser for Firefox

I use Linux Mint. When I download some file and then click on "Open Containing Folder" button it opens Nautilus file browser. Default file browser on my computer is Nemo, so I would like to always use it.

It is possible to [[Set how Firefox handles different types of files]]. Please open the following options to find that menu:
    # Open Options/Preferences
    # Open Applications
    # Select the action desired
However if the item is not there, Is that file explorer the default explorer on the linux machine?

Below is how it is being done.  This worked perfectly for years. MS Office 2007 does complain that the file extension does not match the data format (it's a tab delimited text file but I'm pretending it's an Excel file so they'll be prompted to view it as a spreadsheet in Excel) but you just click open and it works fine.  This issue with IE is new.  Let me know if you have any more ideas.

  • How to set default file browser and web browser

I am using openbox as the window manager and don't have a desktop environment.
My file browser is pcmam file manager and my web browser is chromium.
    I add
    export BROWSER=/usr/bin/pcmanfm
in .bashrc so that the system uses pcman file manager to open a local file from an external application. But it will also uses pcman file manager to open a url. I want the url opened in chromium, but chromium doesn't let me set the default web browser (as the picture shows blow).:(
    What shall deal with it?
    Thank you.

    ashesxera: Thanks for the pointers!
After some hours of persistent puzzling I finally figured out how to make Thunderbird/Lanikai open URIs in Chromium instead of Firefox in the XFCE desktop environment.
In fact I found two solutions that both work.
    1) The straightforward solution: make some changes to Thunderbird/Lanikai's prefs.js
    Add two string variables:
    string: network.protocol-handler.app.ftp; value: exo-open
    string: network.protocol-handler.app.http; value: exo-open
    string: network.protocol-handler.app.https; value: exo-open
and importantly: change the values of the Boolean variables network.protocol-handler.warn-external.ftp network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http and network.protocol-handler.warn-external.https to 'true'.
It turns out that for some unclear reason the standard Arch Linux Thunderbird/Lanikai package uses gnome-open to open URLs. The persistent popping up of Firefox was caused by some settings in .gconf that come with the gconfd package. I didn't find these values in gconf-editor.
    2) Change xml files in .gconf
As I don't want to use Firefox as standard browser any longer, I wanted to get rid of these hidden settings in .gconfd so that "gnome-open [URI]" opens a webpage in Chromium.
I succeeded in getting there by replacing firefox with chromium in the following files:
    .gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/browser/%gconf.xml
    .gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/chrome/%gconf.xml
    .gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/ftp/%gconf.xml
    .gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/%gconf.xml
    .gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/%gconf.xml
    .gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers//%gconf.xml

Please suggest me way to solve this problem?

    In Java 6: see java.awt.Desktop.browse(URI)
In earlier Java versions: Look for the JDIC library, which is the predecessor of that API.

  • On opening default web browser in P1i shows error as "Corrupt"

    Hi All,
I am Mahesh. This is my first thread in this forum. I have Sony Ericsson P1i. I purchased it 2 and half years ago.
Whenever i open the default web browser. i get the error saying "Corrupt". Can you guys suggest me how to fix this problem or reinstall the browser again?
Although i have Opera mini but this default browser is required for me because Track ID (which recognises the song) uses this default browser.
    Thanks in advance.

Try updating or re-installing the phone's software using the SE update service on your PC, and see if this restores the browser.

  • [SOLVED] Firefox won't start - "Failed to execute default Web Browser"

I've just updgraded from Firefox 3 to version 4 (by running "pacman -Syu") on my 64-bit Arch installation.  I started XFCE and Firefox 4 worked fine for a few minutes before crashing and closing automatically.
A short while later (long enough to forget exactly what I was doing when it crashed!) I tried to run it again, but got the error message Failed to execute default Web Browser. / Input/output error.
I've tried rebooting the PC and re-installing firefox & firefox-i18n, but still get the same error.  If I run "firefox" from a terminal window, I get the following response:
OpenOffice path before fixup is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'
    OpenOffice path is '/usr/lib/openoffice.org3'

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to get Firefox working again?  (Thanks in advance!)

Thanks for that.  After I posted my last message, Firefox crashed again on a website containing embedded video.  I disabled the add-on, but when VLC was updated, I guess it installed and enabled the add-on again.  Firefox worked fine initially, but I've just tried to open it again and the same "input/output error" message appeared.  I rebooted, but the problem persisted.
Uninstalling the vlc-plugin package seems to have resolved that, though.

  • Changing Default Web Browser After Reboot

    Hello,
I am using Webkit as my default browser and every time I reboot the machine, it keeps changing my default web browser back to Safari.
I have used the settings in the preferences pane in Safari and applied the changes and after reboot it still occurs. I have read somewhere (I do not remember what website) that FileVault has something to do with resetting my saved settings. I do have FileVault enabled on my system.
    Thanks for your help,
    supersmooth

I would like to advise anyone reading this post that after some more researching, I have found several other posts in different forums that deals with this topic.
Although the suggestions within the other posts did not work, I did try them and had no resolve.
    Here are the other posts within the links posted below;

  • Safari prefs show zsh in default web browser

I have uninstalled firefox and trashed all preferences and the application support folder. Now for some reason, in Safari preferences in the default web browser drop-down there is an item labeled with a folder named 'zsh'. This shows up along with Safari. When I install Firefox it goes away and changes back to Firefox. Not a big deal but I would like to get rid of the zsh since Firefox has been uninstalled. Anyone else see this?

Well, no responses and couldn't find a **** thing on how to fix this. My obsessive compulsive behavior prevailed and I reinstalled the OS.

    Hello,
I have been trying to launch my default web browser from my java application, but am unable do it. Right now, I am using ---- "Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c start <url>"); to launch my webbrowser. It launches the browser but displays the command prompt for a second or so, and then replaces my already existing page with the new url.
Is there any way for me to launch the url in a completely new browser each and every time. And I don't want the command prompt to show up for a sec. Please help...!
    Thanks in advance.

If by any chance your application is an Applet, you can use this to open a new browser window:
    getAppletContext().showDocument(new URL(theUrl), "_blank");
But, you probably would have specified if that were the case. Oh well. Hope it helps someone!
