Default open jpg to photoshop cc 2014 in win 8.1

Why dont beta testers find things like this. in windows 8.1, you can not change the default program for jpg, jpeg or gif to photoshop cc 2014 in default settings it always defaults to photoshop cc 64bit instead. Tif and Tiff however can be switched to default open to  Photoshop cc 2014 without incident. Even though I direct the jpg and gif families to photoshop cc 2014, it is always set to photoshop cc 64bit.

That should work, but rather than using the control panel open a Windows Explorer window and right-click on a file with the extension you want to open in Photoshop. Then select the  and select the Open With option and if Photoshop CC 2014 is available in the list click it. If it's not there, select Choose Default Program and in the new window that appears choose More Options at the bottom of the window and then Look For Another App On This Computer from the bottom of the window again. Then you can navigate directly to the Photoshop CC 2014 install folder and manually select the Photoshop.exe file from there. That should then set Photoshop CC 2014 as the default program.
If this still doesn't work, then you'll have to see about getting help from Microsoft's forums as it's really an issue with Windows and not Photoshop.

  • Why JPEG - TIFF files in Bridge won´t open directly in Photoshop CC 2014?

Since a couple of weeks ago, whenever I click a jpeg or tiff file in Bridge (last reinstalled in 17/08/14) it won’t open directly in Photoshop CC 2014, but in Windows photo viewer.  Am I doing something wrong or is it Bridge’s fault?

Thank you for your help. I tried this, but, at least in Windows OS if I do it, every time I'm within any window, a JPEG or TIFF file will open directly in Photoshop, not Windows Viewer. I contacted Adobe support and they sugested me to uninstall and reinstall Photoshop and Bridge. It took me some time, but the problem was solved. I suspect that my issue began the moment I uninstalled Photoshop CC, which was active at the same time with Photoshop CC 2014. So, if you have both, try to live with them or uninstall both apps and reinstall only CC 2014.

  • Win 7 refuses to open jpg in Photoshop using explorer

Recently I installed an update to Corel X6 after I had updated CS6 of Photoshop. Now despite choosing Photoshop as the default application, jpgs open in Acrobat.
Just choosing Photoshop as the default application doesn't change anything. They still open in Acrobat unless I first start Photoshop and open the file I want. Can anyone tell me the registry key to fix this please?
    R.

Well Noel ... That's a new one on me. I wasn't aware when changing a program's default file types you had to log off and on. I tried doing that but although I'm administrator on both logins, I can "choose" photoshop right enough but Acrobat remains the default program for jpgs. I have never set this. It should just allow me to record Photoshop as the default program, it does not.
Stormboy... Let me assure you I followed your instructions and they did not work. Even when my gut tells me advise is wrong, I'll still try it. Your advise didn't work.
The process of changing the default program to open a jpg file to be Photoshop by using the GUI is where the problem lies. Sure,  I can navagate to the Adobe folder and select Photoshop to become the default but it has no effect. The file will still be opened by acrobat and converted to a PDF. Since posting this issue, I found plenty on the subject in the Microsoft Tech site.
Even to the point of a helpful guy providing me with what I asked for at the beginning of this thread... The name of the registry hive I need to edit to fix the issue. All too often we get so used to working with a GUI that we forget Windows is ultimately controlled by command line instructions.
Armed with information from Microsoft knowledge base, I reset the default for JPG files to Photo Viewer. In doing that I also killed the registry instruction that was preventing me from changing the default. From there I added Photoshop to the list of programs that could open a JPG file.
Now when I use explorer to locate a file, right clicking it will give me the option to "open with" and amongst the programs that can open a JPG, Photoshop is top of the list. It was a Windows 7 problem, not an Adobe issue. I suspect it was caused by using a registry cleaner to defrag the registry but I guess I'll never really know for sure.
    Thanks for your help gents,

  • Cannot Create New File or Open File in Photoshop CC 2014

I recently upgraded my installation of Premiere Pro to CC 2014, after which my Photoshop install starting acting up. The application will load, but when I try to create a new file or open a file, I get the spinning beach ball (on a mac.)  I'm running Photoshop CC 2014 on a Macbook Pro with ver 10.9.4 Mavericks. I cannot get Premiere to load at all, btw, but that isn't my primary concern at this point.
    Please help.  Thanks!

Okay, so I uninstalled Premiere Pro CC 2014 and my Photoshop installation went back to working normally.  Must be an issue with the updated Premiere.  I will try and redownload it at a later date to see if it's more stable.

  • Unable to change/reset colors with open document in Photoshop CC 2014

I have the 2014.2.2 release of Photoshop CC 2014 and am suddenly unable to change or reset colors with an open document. I get a "Could not complete your request because of a program error" message. After closing the document (or before opening one) I can change colors okay. But not with a document open.

OK, then resetting Photoshop's preferences is the next thing to try. But first, save a copy of the existing preferences - we may need them to figure out what is going wrong.
See this page for ways to reset your prefs: Photoshop Help | Preferences

  • Open jpg in Photoshop/ACR

There are time that I'd like to open jpg files in PS-CS4/ACR and others staught into PS-CS4.  The later is easy as I have a context menu option to pass the file directly to PS but sometime I'd like to go the ACR route.   I prefer not to use Bridge-CS4 if possible.  Is there a parameter I can use in a shortcut on an WinXP machine?
    Thanks,
    RON C

An alternative way to work is to set your camera raw preferences to always open jpg files in ACR. When you select your file in Windows use your context menu to select Open With Photoshop and it will open in the ACR window ready to go. If you do not want that file to be processed in ACR then a simple click on the large Open Image button will put you into Photoshop  proper.

  • Acrobat X Pro keeps opening jpgs with PHOTOSHOP!

This is killing me... attached .jpgs I have within Acrobat files used to click open in PREVIEW. Quick, easy, at a glance. Since installing Photoshop via Creative Cloud, every time I click an image, I have to wait for Photoshop to spin up, run its nonsense, then show me a simple, single pic within its cumbersome, unnecessary layout.
I get the logic, they're both Adobe products, but I don't need Photoshop to open unless I WANT it to open!! For the love of all things holy I'm hoping someone can tell me how to select which app opens when I click on an image in Acrobat X Pro.
    Adobe Acrobat 10.1.13
    Macbook Pro current gen.
    OS 10.8.5
    Thanks!

    I solved this.
I noticed some alternate options for opening attachments (seen in attached photo.) The second from left is "open file in it's native application."
That got me thinking on how to fix this... Even though the attachment was a simple .jpg, it has somehow been created in photoshop; so it kept opening photoshop. I opened it in Preview via the finder, did a "save as" through Preview and replaced the Acrobat attachment with this new file. That in turn reverted it to the Preview app.
    Thanks for your reply!
    And lesson learned.

That error message indicates the file is corrupted.

Not necessarily.  You may be looking at preeview built by InDesign.

  • Opening jpg in photoshop from lightroom

I have Lightroom 4.2 and Photoshop CS6. If I'm viewing a photo in LR and select edit in CS6, the photo doesn't open in camera raw, even though I have CR selected in photoshop preferences as my preference. Is this normal?

You cannot open directly into ACR from Lightroom.  Lightroom and ACR perform the same functions.  In the transfer from Lightroom to Photoshop the design is for ACR to simply interpret the adjustments made in Lightroom, and apply those adjustments to the image that is opened in Photoshop.  Technically speaking, ACR isn't needed for anything else because it is simply a duplication of effort.  So if you want to return or enter ACR, you have to do as Rick indicated, and double click on the smart object in the layers panel.

  • Error message "Cant open illustration" in Illustrator CC 2014 on Win 7 PC

Need urgent help to recover or open file, please.

    George,
One thing often tried first is to create a new document and File>Place the corrupted one to see how much may be rescued that way (remember to tick Paste remembers Layers in the Layer palette flyout/dropdown first, and to untick it afterwards).
Here are some websites where you can see whether it can rescue the file, and if it can, you may pay for a subscription to have it done,

As far as I remember, the first one is for Win and the one is for Mac, while the third one should be for both.

  • Not able to set custom shortcut for increase/decrease brush size in Photoshop CC 2014 on Win 8

I am using Windows 8 and PS CC2014 and the issue is that I can't assign custom shortcut to the dot. I have been using , and . as decreasing and increasing brush size and it has worked well in every photoshop, even cc2014 in win7 but not in win8 it seems. It lets me to change the , and just tells me that it is in use in somewhere else but i can still change it. But I can't do the same with . as it complains it being used by an application although I have cleared that from the original place and left it empty, photoshop still recognizes it if I press it although it would be empty but I can't assign that key to anything else either.
Small thing but drives me crazy as I had to assign it to another keys and I am using the shortcuts from muscle memory mostly and end up changing the brush when I had an intention to increase the size. I tried to google this but couldn't find anything similar solution.

I didn't manage to get it to work :c Restart won't do anything and I tried to reset the preferences by deleting manually the file with keyboard shortcuts. I managed to get them to the factory settings but that was about it. Everytime I try to assign "." to somewhere (including to the place where it already is), it gives the red x and says "the shortcut is not valid. It is being used by another application." (not sure what it is in english exactly, I happen to have my PS in finnish unfortunately ). Plugin disabled mode did nothing either.
I have changed that shortcut many times to different versions earlier and this is first time I see that message or am not being able to change the shortcut. And I installed the photoshop yesterday from fresh and first thing I did was making the shortcuts and it gave the error from the first use.

  • How do I change the "Open In" default from "Photoshop CS6" to "Photoshop CC 2014" in Bridge CC? I'm using a Mac

I have Photoshop CC 2014 and Bridge CC when I double click or Open in Bridge CC Photoshop CS6 opens instead of Photoshop CC 2014. How can I change this dynamic link to open Photoshop CC 2014? Help!

Thanks Gener7, but that did not work.
I also tried opening Bridge’s Preferences> File Type Associations and clicking the Reset to Default Applications button.  Then see Photoshop CC 2014 listed next to all basic image formats.  but did not work
Also tried this: but did not work
    --Open Bridge.
--Use the Keywords panel menu command Export to save your keywords (not in the Bridge or Photoshop folders or their support folders).
    --Quit Bridge.
    --Hold down the Command-Option-Shift keys.
    --Launch Bridge.
--When the small dialog box appears, release the three modifier keys and elect to replace the Preferences and purge the cache.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 does not show up in Default Programs to associate with correct extensions.

I am trying to re-associate file types such as .jpg with Photoshop CC 2014.  The executable file does not show up even after I select it by browsing to it.  What do I need to do so my image file types open in Photoshop like they did in CC / CS6?  I have uninstalled Extension Manager and CC 2014 and reinstalled.  No luck.

Are you on Windows on Mac?
On Windows I found my registry need and update. The key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell had two lower keys edit and open.  The edit command was updated to CC 2014 but Open command was still  CC so I updated the open key the fix your problem on my machine.
