Default operating system?

I successfully installed Windows 7 on my MBP. (Trackpad still slow though) However, I noticed that whenever I reboot the computer it automatically boots into Windows. The only time I can go into Mac OS X is when I press the Option key. Is there anyway i can make Snow Leopard the default operating system?
Thanks in advance!

Is there anyway i can make Snow Leopard the default operating system?
Select it from the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences or the Startup Disk control panel, or start up with the X key held down.

In OSX go to System Preferences>Startup Disk, choose whichever you want.

  • I exposed MiniNT as the default operating system. XP wont start

I have a thinkPad T61 that I now updated with SP3 but I managed to mess up my partitions and more specifically the bootup partition. I am not sure what I did but when my PC boots up I now go directly into Rescue and Recovery.
I tried to start up the PC with my XP install CD and went for R (Recovery). Somehow these are the repair options
    1: c:\MiniNT
    2: d\Windows
Clearly I have exposed the  c\MiniNT as the default operating system and that is why I now boot up in ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery.
I would really appreciate if somebody has some hints on how to fix this
    Thanks you

I've tried installing, reinstalling and removing and installing itunes 9.1 but the program will not start. I have clicked on the desktop shortcut, the itunes.exe in the program folder but all i get is a brief loading hourglass and then nothing. I have checked in task manager and the programs itunes.exe and ituneshelper.exe are in the processes window but the program is not visible on the desktop.
Starting some basic-principles troubleshooting here, if you're game.
The first thing to try isn't a cure in itself, but can rule out some possible causes of problems, and narrow in on others. We're going to check to see if this is a systemwide issue or if it is specific to one particular user account.
From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
Open Add or remove user accounts (If using the Classic View in Windows Vista, open User Accounts. Then open Manage another account).
Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process. Give the new user account full administrative rights.
Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu. Log into the newly created user account. (Don't use fast user switching to move between accounts.)
Launch itunes in the new account. The setup assistant will/should run. Do not add any files when prompted to do so (if things get that far). Just let it eventually open to an empty library.
... does it eventually open to an empty library? Or do you get the same sort of behavior as in the usual user account?

  • Default Operation System

I have downloaded Windows Vista on my MB Pro, I really need it for AutoCAD. And Now whenever I turn on my computer it automatically choose Vista.
I know if I press the "option" key, I can choose the OS I want, but my question is how can I make it log in to Mac automatically not windows?
    Thanks in advance

It is supposed to say, "UNTITLED". That is a good thing. FYI, you cannot rename this volume, as it has been formatted as NTSF. Mac cannot write to it. That is why it says, "UNTITLED".
You can also set your start-up preference via Boot Camp manager in Windows.
I trust that you have successfully installed all of your Boot Camp drivers from your Install Disk 1 or Leopard disk.

  • Hi, I have an issue with my Mac Book Pro 15 Inch Mid 2010. I have installed Windows 8.1 operating system during week end and only windows is opening when I log in the mac. I don't know how to switch back to apple OS. Can some one please help?

Windows 8.1 installed on my Mac and now I am not able to open Apple OS. Mac is opening straight windows with out an option to open Apple OS. My Mac is running on the latest Yosemite OS.

Please also see Boot Camp: Set the default operating system.

  • Where do I find out which operating system is on my imac desktop computer?

How do I know whether or not I have an XP operating system on my imac desktop?

Depending on which iMac build series, be it an older powerPC-based G4 or G5,
or an Intel-based model built after 2005, the method of installing and using a
Windows system can vary. Finding out which Windows version is running on
    either, can vary, too.... {the PPC Macs top out with OS X 10.5.8, as native.}
If yours is a newer intel-based iMac, you've posted in the older PPC-Mac area.
Here's a Support article covering the more recent & likely path with newer iMac...
•Mac Basics: Using Windows on your Mac with BootCamp
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1461
"...After installation, you can switch between Windows and OS X by holding the Option
(Alt) key at start up. Or, use the Startup Disk control panel in Windows (installed with
Boot Camp support software) -- or the OS X Startup Disk preference pane to set the
default operating system to use each time the computer starts up..."
In Mac OS X, look in System Preferences> Startup Disk> if you installed Windows
using BootCamp. (Not sure if that'd show Windows if Parallels or other utility were
used to install Windows in the Mac OS X.)
And, if your computer is not an Intel-based iMac, instead is a powerPC-based one,
some of the above may still apply; except BootCamp won't run in the older PPC.
So there were emulation or third-party applications like Virtual PC that ran XP.
    Hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    hi,
    Check the Boot.ini file .
it mightbe refrencing a scsi disk
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314081
Typically, the Boot.ini file contains the following data:
       [boot loader]
       timeout=30
       default=scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt
       [operating systems]
       scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\winnt = "Windows NT" /NODEBUG   C:\ = "Previous Operating System on C:\"
The following list describes the meaning of the data in the Boot.ini file:
The "timeout" variable specifies how long Windows waits before choosing the default operating system.
The "default" variable specifies the default operating system.
The term "scsi(0)" means that the primary controller (that is frequently the only controller) is responsible for the device. If there are two SCSI controllers, and the disk is associated with the second controller, the controller is named "scsi(1)".
If the system uses IDE, enhanced IDE (EIDE), or Enhanced Small Device Interface (ESDI) drives, or if the system uses a SCSI adapter that does not have a built-in BIOS, replace "scsi" with "multi".
The term "disk(0)" refers to the SCSI logical unit (LUN) to use. This may be a separate disk, but most SCSI setups have only one LUN for each SCSI ID.
The term "rdisk(0)" refers to physical disk 1.
The term "partition(1)" is the partition on the first drive in the computer. If there are two partitions, partition C is partition(1) and partition D is partition(2).
A multi-boot parameter calls for checking the Winnt folder to start from a specified SCSI controller's disk and partition.
"/NODEBUG" specifies that no debugging information is being monitored. Debugging information is useful only for developers.
You can add the /SOS option to display driver names while the drivers are being loaded. By default, the OS Loader screen only shows progress dots.
"Previous Operating System on C:\" implies that the "previous operating system" is MS-DOS, because "C:\" is an MS-DOS path.

  • How to check whether a default browser is opened in the operating system?

    Hi,
I am newbie here. During my work, I faced an interesting problem. I need to:
    - check whether a default html browser is opened;
    - check whether the browser is minimized/maximized (simply, a window's state);
    - get an url address typed in the browser.
If any of these conditions is not met, I have to open the browser in a maximized view with a desired url address. I primarily wanted to do all this in Java, but it came to my mind that I should employ many techniques/technologies and combine them appropriately to complete the functionality. But, which ones? That's the problem. I just recalled Windows API, but I'm not sure if it is of any help... On another forum, some users suggested that I should consider JNI... At this time, I only know how to open a default browser (e.g. with use of the 'browse(URI uri)' method of the 'java.awt.Desktop' class) - that's too little to be proud of. Please give me some hints, maybe links to reasonable discussions, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions how to approach the problem.

  • Jvm 1.4,1.5 default memory usage in Ram in different operating systems

    Hi ,
Can anyone help me with the default memory occupied by Jvm in different operating systems ?
I have practically seen that jdk1.4,jdk1.5,jdk1.3 has around 64 Mb as the
default size on 32 bit machines .
I am in need of the similar data for jvms on Solaris,Unix and Linux machines . Also much curious to know about the default memory occupied on 64 bit machines. It would be really great if the statistical data is present in any link .
    Thanks and Regards
    Suman

Default Heap sizes on 64 bit JVM are by default 30% bigger then the 32bit version to accomodate the extra memory used by 64 bit object pointers instead of 32 bit.
This link plus documents close to it answers most questions.

  • Apply Operating System Failed

    Environment: SCCM 2012 R2 CU3
    Background:
Prestaged image was applied to machine. The prestaged image was created based on our old TS which only contains winpe boot image and the windows 7 operating system. WINPE v4.0 was still used in this prestaged image. We recently updated our TS with WINPE
v5.1(we did not create a new prestage image) in order to accommodate the installation of SCCM client R2 CU3 during the build.
    Build Process:
Powered on the machine and boot to the hard disk(since prestaged image was already applied to the machine). After selecting our TS, it starts to download the WINPE v5.1 and then asks for a reboot. After the reboot, it starts to apply the operating
system but will fail afterwards. Snippet of the error in smsts.log can be found below.
    What we have noticed:
If we don't change the boot image of the TS to WINPE v5.1 and still use WINPE v4.0, we don't encounter the error. The only time we encounter the error is when we change the boot image of the TS to WINPE v5.1. Note that I can ping the FQDN of the Primary
server and the dp when using WINPE v5.1

WINPE v5.1 is not supported and does not work, are you sure you are using it and not PE 5.0? Note that the ADK for Win 8.1 Update does *not* create WinPE 5.1 boot images, it creates WinPE 5.0 boot image that you can then modify to be WinPE 5.1 by injecting
    the appropriate updates.
The above log file clearly shows authentication issues and calls out the fact that no Network Access Account is set.

  • Android Issues? Operator or Operational System Problems?

The concept of the Android operational system got many rave reviews, and many positive comments regarding the many things an android phone can achieve.  However,  as a funtionally smartphone to use in business to organize, file and utilize contacts, it falls short in the performance department.  Many of the primarly functions as a smart phone of the Droid X falls short and at this time after nearly four months and 4 droids, the solution appears far in the distance.
I am presently using my 4th Motorola Droid X, which all the 3 previous models were deemed defective by Motorola & Verizon Tech's.  I find it interesting that it appears that despite numerous telephone calls for help & assistance, that I am told by both Motorola & Verizon support that the following concerns do not show as problems with the Droid X.
Don't believe me... get out your droid now and try the following:
    1. Why when selecting either a phone number, address or email as "DEFAULT", absolutely nothing is displayed to indicate that a default was set?
SOLUTION:  Upon selecting either a phone number, address or email as DEFAULT, why not have the entire entry change color to GREEN.  (keep in mind those that might be color blind).  Green is the color that means go, first, and is most easily viewed immediately.
    2. Why when selecting a contact to edit does information appear in different order in "edit" screen that in the "contact data screen.?
SOLUTION:  Programmers you need to fix this discrepancy.  It is too confusing when trying to compare data.
    3. Why does the data also appear differently in different order when comparing information to that which is displayed on google.account?
SOLUTION:  See answer to number 2.
    4. Why when conducting searches in which many of the contacts have similar names (like "Marina") that the search will not list all of the contacts matching criteria requested in search?
SOLUTION:  Correct search critera to examine all data fields and to ensure multiple entries in each field is identified by the search feature.
NOTE: it would be nice that when search results are listed that user have the option to see requested search first rather than all other contacts that have matching criteria.  Example.  if searching for Marina,  if typing Ma...  as the letters are typed only list those matches that the MA is matching as the first two characters FIRST rather than every match that contains the letters MA.
But still problem remains that the search criteria leaves out contacts that have the exact match requested criteria.
    5.  Why have the ability  to create groups if groups will not sync  between the phone and gmail?
SOLUTION:  Programmers need to investigate and determine why when creating groups on the phone or on gmail do not sync.   If the phone is designed to be a phone to work with the google /gmail features, then perhaps all of the features should be tested... or make a disclosure prior to sale of functions that do not work.
    6. Does this Droid X, have the ability to work as designed with more than one gmail contact?  IF YES, then how is a particular gmail account linked to a contact?  Can this contact gmail link be changed or linked to more than one email without having to retype contact data?  There appears to be no method in which to select a gmail in which to link a contact?
SOLUTION:  enable feature to select which account to link a contact.   Also, enable ability to select mulitple links and/or ability to switch links.
    7. What causes differences in total number of contacts on the phone than that listed in the gmail account?  Phone constantly shows fewer contacts than the gmail account,  in my case, there are (402) missing contacts on the phone?
SOLUTION:  There should be mathatical check to ensure contacts match both phone and gmail account and an error message when the count differs.   NOTE: is there a problem not disclosed regarding an OUTLOOK CVS file not syncing with a google account data?
    8. Constantly getting message:  SORRY, The application Google Services Framework (process com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.   FORCE CLOSE.   Why? What is constantly not working?
NOTE: This problem appears, often several times, then is followed by phone resetting itself.
SOLUTION:  BE PRO ACTIVE IN NOTIFYING CUSTOMERS USING EQUIPMENT OF ISSUES DEEMED NECESSARY TO BE ADDRESSED IN SOFTWARE FIX.  IN FACT, WHY NOT AN APPLICATION THAT IDENTIFYS ALL ISSUES WITH ANTICIPATED STATUS ON WHEN CORECTIONS WILL BE FORTHCOMING.

Thank you for your reply from the Droid (1) point of view.  However, the issues I have addressed are regarding the DROID X model only.  I am sure there are more issues that I have not discovered, but I am confident that these problems are NOT caused by operator error.  I look forward to any comments from those of you using the DROID X.  Let me know if you find any other problems.  OH.  Has anyone purchased the Navigational/Music Vehicle Mount by Motorola for the DROID X?  Has anyone found a "CASE" that allows you to use the Mount with the case still on the DROID X?  Motorola states that they do not make a case.  I wonder just how the prototype was developed with out an actual case to create the mount?  Sounds like possible class action material.  Build, Sell an accessory that can't support the accessory as advertised?

Don't use the CD software its not necessary.
Infact put it in the trash.
Your router will have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.1
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line.
Now open your Web browser Safari . Type in the IP address above and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Now remove the cable and connect to the Wifi and enter that passphase.

  • Installing Multiple Operating Systems with grub and Arch Linux

NOTE: Please keep in mind that there are many different ways to achieve this same result using various loop and ramdisk methods, read this with a separate window to jot down your comments and suggestions... this is ongoing for me so any help would be appreciated!

This is my first post and I plan on making this topic an official HOWTO with www.tldp.org.
I have been into the computer security scene since 1990, but I realized that I had very little experience with the various LInux, Unix, and alternative Operating systems out there.
I have a CD-RW drive but being a struggling computer security researcher I had no money for blank cd-recordables.  What follows is how I managed to install various operating systems on my computer (1 hard drive) without having to burn to a CD the ISO and then boot from that.
I first partitioned my 120GB harddrive into 10 partitions, the 2nd partition is a small swap and the last partition is extra large because it holds all the ISO images..
I then wrote a small shell script to automatically download (I love wget!)  the following.
    OpenBSD
    IpCOP
    Libranet
    Arch-Linux
    Fire
    Local Area Security
    Packet Master
    Devil-Linux
    FreeBSD
    Knoppix
    Helix
    Gentoo
    Yoper-Linux
    NetBSD
    RedHat
    Slackware
The script also downloaded Installation manuals and md5 checksums.. (let me know if I should post... its pretty unsophisticated
I installed Slackware (personal favorite) on hda1 using my last blank CD-R, note that I do not have a separate boot partitino.  (Should I?).  I also installed grub on the MBR.  I love grub, if you read through the man pages and all info you can find about grub, you can learn a whole lot.  Grub has much more features and capability than lilo, even though lilo comes installed by default with slack.
I organize my kernel situation as follows...  In my /boot directory, I mkdir KERNEL, CONFIG, MAP, INITRD and that is a good way for me to keep my kernels and everything organized..  Another good way is a separate dir for each new kernel.
Since Arch-Linux is a solid distro, I'll use that as a first example.
Here is the Arch-Linux section of my shell script
    goge Arch-Linux
    $w http://puzzle.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/archlinux/arch-0.6.iso
    $w http://unc.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/archlinux/arch-0.6.md5sum
    $w http://www.archlinux.org/docs/en/guide/install/arch-install-guide.html
    md55
    cat arch-0.6.md5sum
    md5sum arch-0.6.iso
    md55
The first thing to do is to mount the downloaded ISO image so we can use it as if it were an actual CD.
    mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 cdimage /mnt/cdrom
Where cdimage= the ISO image.   EX. /usr/local/src/ISO/Linux/Arch-Linux/arch-0.6.iso
This mounts the iso as /mnt/cdrom.
Next you need to copy /mnt/cdrom to a separate partition for the booting process.  So mkfs.ext2 /dev/hda9.  ( I prefer reiserfs or even XFS to ext but if you use something other than ext2 you could run into some problems because some of the installation kernels and initrds don't include support for reiserfs and so can't recognize the files.  Although you could use mkinitrd to create a new initrd with reiserfs support, that might be pushin it IMO...   I use the 9th partition consistently for this.  I know there is a "right" way to copy the /mnt/cdrom files so everything stays the way it is supposed too, using tar or cpio, but I'm lazy so I just do cp -rp.
(What is the tar or cpio commands to copy with correct permissions etc??)
So you mount the 9th partition as whatever, say /mnt/hd and then copy the files.  Now what?
Now edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include the specific options to boot arch-linux installation.
A good idea is to find the isolinux.cfg file somewhere on the distro cd, this will tell you what to include in the menu.lst.
Here is the section in my menu.lst
    title Arch Install
    root (hd0,8)
    kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 root=/dev/rd/0
    initrd=/isolinux/initrd.img
This should be self-explanatory.  The root (hd0,8) is pointing to partition 9.  So the rest of the commands start from partition 9.
When you experience problems, remember you can always edit the grub boot options by typing 'e' and then edit the section.  Also, a good idea is to include several variations in your menu.lst so you can easily try other ways to boot efficiently.  And, remember to read up on all the installation guides that come with your distro, specifically, hard-disk installs.
There are special cases, Gentoo, has a semi-new compressed filesystem called squashfs.  BTW, this is AWESOME, so check it out.  It has to be compiled into the kernel, so some work is in order, but use this recompile to optimize your kernel.  You can get the squashfs patch for almost any kernel.  I use the latest stable 2.6 kernel.  Squashfs is incredible and although I don't think you need it to install from ISO, you do need it to expand the livecd.squashfs filesystem that comes with the cd.
Heres a sample Gentoo section from my menu.lst
    title Gentoo Install
    root (hd0,8)
    kernel /isolinux/gentoo root=/dev/ram0
    initrd=/isolinux/gentoo.igz init=/linuxrc acpi=off looptype=squashfs loop=/livecd.squashfs cdroot vga=791 splash=silent
A nother' tip is the shell that is provided if you experience problems, typically busybox or ash.  The key tools to get you going from here is mount and chroot.  Sometimes you will need to manually create a simulated file system and then chroot into it.  For instance, you might have to create boot, etc, bin, directories on the target partition.
I generally install each OS onto the next partition (careful of the logical partition) and add it to my menu.lst after install.  A good idea is after installation, copy the kernel and initrd(if there is one) to the slackware(or whatever) boot partition on hda1.  I copy kernels to /boot/KERNEL/ and initrd's to /boot/INITRD, then menu.lst is more organized...
You then need to add an updated section to your menu.lst (just comment out the install section for later)
Here is the finished arch-linux section from menu.lst
    title Arch Linux 6
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 ro root=/dev/hdc3
This doesn't use my convenient boot/KERNEL/vmlinuz26 as you can tell by setting the root to partition 3.
***NOTE: Make a backup of MBR using dd and save to floppy, also backup the partition table to floppy, using cfdisk or parted.  And boot disks (I use 1 with grub, and 1 with slack, and tomsbootdisk) will invariably come in handy.  Tomsbootdisk is recommended, and make the grub boot disk when you install grub.  install to floppy.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The final result after some fun experimenting, is when I boot, I have a cool grub boot screen come up with the option to boot into whatever OS I want, this is handy for multiple reasons.  One good thing to do after this is to port scan and vuln scan each OS, after you update of course.  Write this stuff down and you will know the weaknesses/strengths of the various OS's.
I can boot a custom Firewall, snort, or multiple honeypots using this procedure, as well as a graphical kde environment with a kernel optimized for graphics and my processor/architecture, or an environment devoted to forensics or even an environment suitable for programming.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
P.S. Some of the cooler alternative operating systems are BeOS 5, EOS, ER_OS, V2_OS, and my personal favorite Menuet.  Menuet is 100% assembly graphical operating system that fits on a floppy.  Its f'in money!
This should be a good enough example to get you started, this kind of thing should be learned and not just copied... Knowing how to do this stuff could prove to be exceptionally useful...

  • My Mac's operating system no longer compatible with my Deskjet 3050A

    Hi,
I haven't used my printer in a while because it hasn't been working. But I'm tired of running to my neighborhood FedEx Office so am tackling this issue today.
I went to install the HP software on my MacBook Air and was told "installer not compatible with the version of the operating system on your computer. It is compatible only with 10.6 and below."
My Mac is running OSX, version 10.9.5. Is there anyway to make the printer compatible?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi @kbaostrem
A full feature driver for Mavericks is not available for your printer, either from the CD that shipped with your printer or from the HP website. This document applies to HP printers supported in Mac OS X versions 10.6 (Snow Leopard), 10.7 (Lion), 10.8 (Mountain Lion), 10.9 (Mavericks), and 10.10 (Yosemite) that only have drivers available through Apple Software Update.
If you would like, I can help you put the printer on your wireless network without software. I use this method for iPads, iPhones and other devices that do not have software.
Restore the network defaults on the printer by pushing the wireless button, going to settings, and then restore defaults. The wireless button should then start flashing, this means it is now in autowireless mode.
Connect to the network that the printer is broadcasting. It is usually HP-setup-3050a and then part of the MAC address. The wireless light will still be flashing on the printer at this point, this is normal since this is not an actual adhoc connection.
Load up the Embedded Web Server (EWS) in the browser on your mobile device. The default IP for autowireless is 192.168.223.1.
Go to the network tab along the top of the EWS.
Click on Wireless Setup Wizard along the lefthand side to begin configuring the printer.
You have now completed the Wireless configuration, follow the next 3 steps to start printing.
The blue wireless light will go solid, put the Mac back on your own network.
Add the printer to the System Preferences.
    Print
