Default operation for File Vault

Just a suggestion for the folks at Apple. When I shut down, the "save disk space" dialog does not always immediately appear. Sometimes I walk away from the computer and come back later with the dialog still open. Why not put in a default similar to the log-off or shut down; if the decision isn't made in a minute, just cancel the "save space" procedure?

It is really annoying that the "save disk space" dialogue appears such a long time after I have commanded the computer to shut down. As a result the computer often remains switched on after I have packed up and gone away. Is there no option that allows File Vault to save disk space routinely whenever I shut down?

When I save a file, photo, etc., the default folder for OPENING a file becomes the last folder I SAVED to - even after closing and reopening Firefox. Is there a way to maintain the same default folder for opening files?

  • V10 Default Settings For File saving

Hello, Could someone please tell me the default setting for file saving options in preferences for Elements V10 ?
    Thank you.

If you reset the Preferences, all preferences will be set to their defaults:  Hold down your Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys when launching the Editor and answer "Yes" to the prompt asking if you want to delete the Preferences.  They will be re-built.

  • Solution for File Vault Error.

I just got off the phone from Apple Tech support (Holding for 20 minutes on a 10th attempt) I could not get past the log-in screen. "File Vault error needs to be repaired". This is what Brandon from Apple told me to do.
1)Restart Computer holding down the "c" key.
2)Follow the onscreen instructions until you get to "Select Drive to install to"
    3)Select your drive-click customize
4)Select the 2nd option, (install and do back of of files) and uncheck the box below the option...sorry I can't remember what the option is...Im in the middle of trying it now.
    5)continue.
6)If you have already screened the install DVD, there is no reason to do this step again, it is ok to skip to install.
If this does not work you need to erase and install, however, you will need to do a file transfer to another mac computer via fire-wire by holding down the "T" key during start up prior to erasing the drive and installation of Leopard.

I would really love to try this, as I am having the same problem, but even after removing everything possible in the customization, I don't have enough disk space to do so. Probably because I used it all installing the operating system the FIRST time. I don't want to have to do an erase and re-install. I didn't back up nearly enough stuff last time because I was assured I wouldn't need to.
Now, it's after hours so I can't talk to apple and I am stuck with my husband's PC. Ew.

  • How do I use the remote wipe feature for file vault 2 / lion?

I tried to find a preference panel. I know that for the ios you have to link/setup your device. I tried the find my iphone web site to see if my computer was listed there and it isn't at the moment. Is this new lion feature only available later with icloud? I checked the lion feature page and it lists it with file vault 2 with no asterisk so my guess is it should already now work.
It would be a pity to think you've setup your computer to find out that you hadn't "activated" your computer/laptop

    Hi,
I'm out of the country on business but probably the only way to figure this out is to call apple or drop by their retail stores. If no one figures this out (and I'm pretty sure there is nothing to figure out at this time). I'll try to call apple when I'm back in august.
I find it wrong that apple touts this as a feature with no disclaimer. I'm a loyal mac fan for twenty years so I'll continue to buy their prodcuts and I did buy lion the day it came out. BUT a disclaimer (as they have done in the past) would have been nice. I know of at least two mac users who usually don't buy new OS's until they get it with their new laptops that specifically bought lion for this feature since they had read about it in a newspaper article.
I also thought this was one of the more useful features in lion since my family already "lost" an iPad and we liked to delete our data after our alarm and message didn't work for a day.
I'm sure  apple has it's reasons for not offering the feature just yet but in that case a disclaimer is a must. I would probably drop the reference remote wipe until I have the infrastructure in place.
    Cheers,

  • Recovery Partition mandatory for File Vault and unencrypted TM Backup?

I recently had to setup my Macbook Pro from scratch meaning erasing the whole disk and start from there.
The update to Lion took already place a while ago and I had File Vault active. After making a last backup using
TM I erased the disk and all partitions including Recovery partition and used the Leopard system DVD to boot
    the machine.
From there I used the restore function to restore my TM backup to the MacBook. However, as the drive was
not partioned and not formated, I had to do this manually. Apparently, the recovery process via TM does not include
that. After system recovery, I booted from the Macbook and all apps and configuration seemed ok.
I was a little surprised to see that I was able to do this recovery without being asked for ID and password of the user's File Vault access
or the File Vault recovery key. All I needed was the TM ID and password (which is different from the owners ID and password)
I am not sure if this is supposed to work like this but I looks rather easy to gain access to application an data of another user if that
    is all it takes?
Now booting Lion again, I checked File Vault and noticed it was disabled although it was enabled for quite a while and long time
before I took the latest backup. I could not turn it on, after providing a recovery key and asking me wether I wanted to write it down
or safe it with Apple which I declined I wanted to reboot the notebook to start encryption but stopped saying my partition or volume
would not support File Vault. This was GUID and MacOS Extended Journal partition and volume which to my knowledge would
certainly support File Vault. In fact this is basically what I had before when File Vault was turned on and running.
I called Apple support a few times. The second agent told me that it does not work because there is not recovery partition on my
system but there was when I took the latest backup and I do have other means to get the recovery screen. Anyway it seems that
File Vault required a local Recovery partition and I was wondering if anyone can tell me why this dependency exist. If I write down the
recovery key, why would I need it to be stored on my disk as well?
Also, if anyone has an idea if there is a way of creating a local recovery partition without having to go through the lenghty process of installing
Leopard then upgrade to Lion and install all the apps and configure the OS again, would be great? I assume when I am back on Lion and use the TM
backup for recovery, I probably end up with having the Recovery partition deleted and start from scratch again.
I am a little concerned about the fact that it seems so easy to gain access to a protected backup and that the TM restore process does not include
restoring partition and volumes as well. Who knows how many other dependencies exist and users have to reinstall their system again after recovery.
I was following the recovery instruction of Apple but perhaps someone knows a better way to do this?

Just an update, I went ahead and installed Lion again over the existing TM restored installation using the Lion Update file and at least File Vault is working. Interestingly, I still do not have a Recover partition so obviously something new for Apple Support to learn.

  • Change default setting for files...

Is there a way to change the default setting for raster effects to 300ppi instead of 72ppi? And is there also a way to have "Align New Objects to Pixel Grid" unchecked by default? I do realize I can change all of these settings either when I create a file or after, but I would like to have them be my defaults. I'm running Illustrator CC on Windows 7. Thanks!

  • Time Table for File Vault 2 FIPS-140-2 Certification

I believe I read something that Lion/File Vault 2 encryption was submitted to NIST for FIPS-140-2 certification.   I know that IOS 5 is first to be certified, but does anyone know the time table for Lion/File Vault 2 to be certified?     I was told a few months ago that it would be certified by 12/31/2011.   Any update would be appreciated.

Disclosure: I work for NIST, but not in the Computer Security Div. (the group that issues the certificates).
Looking at the NIST list of validated modules, Lion's crypto module recieved its certification on 3/30/12, but I don't know if this applies to all apps or just the libraries.  It doesn't apply to 3rd party apps yet (note says it will be re-evaluated for that use).  I wouldn't think File Vault is a "third party" app.
I'll post more if I find out anything.

  • Default values for files and columns when adding a discoverer porlet

Hi, i'd like to know how to configure the default value for numbers of columns and files when i add a new discoverer porlet in a portal page.
The actual default value is 10 files and 6 columns and i always have to increase it to at least 100x100.
Is there any config file where i can change that?
    I've found a configuration.xml in $ORACLE_HOME/discoverer/config/configuration.xml
    with a section
<!-- Discoverer Servlet configuration. Defines behaviour of both

but couldnt find a parameter for those items.

  • Set default filename for file save dialog on Save button click

    Hi,
I am using AxAcroPDF (version 9.0) control to view pdf files in windows forms (C#). The pdf loads into the viewer in the form. Now, when I click on the Save button in the viewer, a Save dialog pops up with a default filename having complete path info.
If I have loaded the pdf file into AxAcroPDF viewer with filename:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\KB_Kravi\My Documents\CustomerList.pdf"
then in the save dialog, the default filename will be:
    "C_Documents_and_Settings_KB_Kravi_My Documents_CustomerList.pdf"
Is there any option to set the default filename in the save dialog to some short name, instead of this lengthy name?
    Thanks,

  • How do you change the default permissions for files?

I have all my users saving (via AFP) to an Xserve RAID, I am using ACL to control who has access to certain area.
This is fine when moving files in the finder, all ACL are respected, however when saving files from Photoshop it ignores the ACL's.
So if user A saves a file they become the owner- which is fine, but the group and everyone permissions are read only, so when user B ammends the file they get a permission warning when they try to save, the work round I'm using is to trash the file just before you try to save- not ideal cos if the save fails you've lost the work.
What I would like is for the default permission to be group "design" Read and Write and leave everyone as read only
So when any designer goes to oversave a file in photoshop they can do.
I needf to leave ACL's on as they are working well in every other situation, i.e I have certain folders set so once images have been added they cannot be deleted or renamed by certain users.
It only seems to be Photoshop that gives us this problem, Quark files and other docs are able to be saved according to the ACL

    Hi
There are some important distinctions and points to be made here.
POSIX Permissions are always set for every file and folder. ACLs are optional for any file, folder or share point and work IN ADDITION to POSIX Permissions. SACLs (Service Access Control Lists) are optional for specific services such as AFP, FTP, SMB, Mail etc and are independent of files and folder as well of standard POSIX Permissions and file system ACLs. Allow access is cumulative and Deny access is first match.
ACLs supersede but don’t necessarily override Standard UNIX permissions.
The best way to use ACLs is to enable Access Control Lists on the desired volume, create the share point folder from within Workgroup Manager, define the Users and Groups and then drop the relevant User and/or Group into the ACL window and define access privileges from there. Don’t be tempted to use the Standard UNIX permissions in addition to ACLs as all sorts of problems can ensue.
Privileges and access can quickly get confused and share points can be broken. Deny settings defined in ACL take precedence over all other privileges settings. Deny settings defined using Standard UNIX as well as ACLs can, in some cases, mean share points becoming inaccessible to all users even those with administrative privileges.
Wherever possible try not to set access privileges using the Finder.

  • How to set default path for file open in SQL Developer

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle SQL Developer. Everytime when I open a file, it will default to the install directory. It is hurtingmy hand because I have to click back to the folder where I put my sql statements.
Is there any way to set the Home or Work button to point to the location I like? or add anther button to point to my folder? I just don't want to click 5 to 10 times to open a file.

There are a few things. One is that you can set a working directory for any files you run in the SQL Worksheet i.e. @myfile.sql will pick up this directory.
You can also set a preference for exporting files.
Also if you use File -> Open, it should remember where you were the last time, so you hunt the first time, then it remembers for the next time. There is a bug for ctrl-O that always goes back to the original directory, but that has been fixed for the next patch release, so ctrl -O will also remember where you were last.
The differences here are because we are dependent on the IDE from JDeveloper, and so we don't have full control over the Save and Open dialogs. We are aware of this frustration and are planning to change this for a future release.

  • Multiple Operations for File to IDoc scenario

    Hi all,
I have a file to IDoc scenario where two IdocXML files (one for INSERT and one for CHANGE of Business Object) have to be picked up by file adapter and transfered to SAP System. In respect to the multiple operations PI 7.1 can handle I would like to create one Service Interface for the Business Object and two operations (INSERT and CHANGE).
Unfortunately I am not able to use the operation in the sender agreement, so I can't specify the comm-channel for the operations, only for the interface.
So, can I use multiple operations in a file scenario (respectively in a non Web Service scenario)??
    Thanks a bunch,
    Manfred

The scenario is pretty easy. I just want two different files to be read by one Comm Channel with one Sender Agreement.
They are both transferred to the same receiver. I just wanted to test one scenario using multiple operations.
In your blog you described that you should not use two operations with the same set of messages (synchronous/asynchronous). In my case both are asynchronous but I already tried it with one being sync and the other one async. Where did you actually get this information, it puzzles me a little since SAP does the same in its preconfigured Enterprise Services as far as I know.
In the Trace for pipeline step Interface determination in SXMB_MONI it says:
<Trace level="1" type="T">...There is no Interface Determination configured for receiver party and receiver service BS_RECEIVER</Trace>
      <Trace level="2" type="T">Check conditions for (Inb: Party Srvc If) BS_RECEIVER SI_..._Out</Trace>
      <Trace level="2" type="T">...valid InbIf without Condition: SI_..._Out</Trace>
      <Trace level="2" type="T">Number of receiving Interfaces:1</Trace>
So it finds the Outbound Interface in Receiver side which is wrong since I specified the Inbound Interface in the Interface determination. Did anyone of you already encounter such a behaviour? I already deleted and recreated all routing objects but without any success.
    Thanks,
    Manfred
