Default Partitions for lenovo Twist s230u

Hello,
I have a Lenovo Twist (s230u) and need to do a system recovery. Unfortunately, neither the F11 option is working nor recovering from win 8 itself. I do not have a win8 disk (wasn't supply with the computer) !
The only option I guess is to get a win8 drive and do a clean install. Before I do this and reformat the drive, can someone tell me what to do with the different partition on the HDD and the SDD ? I see the disk is divided into multiple partitions... Even if I do a clean win 8 installation, what should I do about the 260 Mb, 1000Mb and 7 Gb partitions (EFI, recovery and recovery respectively) Are they necessary ?
What about the SSD ? Technically I guess since it is separated, it shouldn't affected.
Thank you
Cyril

Hello and welcome,
Easiest - if your drive stays alive long enough - is to make a recovery flash drive and use that to restore to a new drive.
Methodology to create Recovery Media and reload a Lenovo system with Microsoft Windows 8 preload
If you have a MS Win 8 install DVD of the matching version you can just copy the contents to a FAT32-formatted flash drive and use that for a clean install.  The license is in BIOS and shoud be picked up.  (CAVEAT: I've done installs from flash, but not verified that the license is picked up.)
Note that the copy-to-flash install works for MS media but not for Lenovo recovery DVDs.
Worst case: use a USB DVD drive.  Worst, worst case: purchase recovery DVDs from Lenovo support _and_ use an external drive.
Z.

  • HDD for lenovo Twist

Could you please recommand me some compatible HDD for Lenovo Twist? The hdd went dead. looking to 7200 RPM with 500 - 1000 GB capacity.
    Thank you very much.

    Hello,
Any 2.5" 7mm high HDD should work, which are a little less common than the 9.5mm high drives normally used in notebook computers, but becoming more common.  The S230u's FRU List gives the following part numbers and models:
    04W0570 - B500 Toshiba
    04W0576 - C320AF Seagate
    04W0582 - 7200RPM SATA 320GB 7.0mm AF 6Gb/s Toshiba AQUARIUS-C SLIM-320
    04W0583 - 7200RPM SATA 500GB 7.0mm AF 6Gb/s Toshiba AQUARIUS-C SLIM-500
    04W0592 - 5400RPM 500GB 7.0mm 6Gb/s WD MN500S-500
    04W3923 - 5400 JAGUAR-B7 500
    04W3926 - 5400 MN500S 500GB
    04W3927 - 7200 JAGUAR-C7 320
    04W3929 - 7200 JAGUAR-C7 500
You could also use a 2.5" 7mm high SSD as well, although if you do, you should not enable the iRST or ExpressCache caching with the mSATA SSD as it will actually slow things down.  You could still use the mSATA SSD as a small secondary drive for backups, etc.

  • MSATA or 2.5" SSD for Lenovo Thinkpad s230u Twist?

The Subject sort of explains itself, however I will add some more infromation for convenience sake:
Generally speaking I think of myself as fairly knowlageble about computers and their hardware. When it comes to laptops however I'm not so knowlagable, thus I would like to get a professional oppinion on the subject of SSD for laptops.
So I'm thinking of getting a Crucial m500 SSD (I'm so happy with my older m4 that I have full confidence in it's stability and speed) with 240GB of storage space, it comes in both mSATA and in the regular 2.5" x 7mm format. Thus I ask wheter or not to choose 2.5" or mSATA for my Thinkpad s230u Twist. It already has a 500Gb  Hitachi harddrive provided originaly by Lenovo, thus if I choose the mSATA I would be able to have a total of 740Gb of fast and reliable storage.
What are your oppinions on such an installation? should I just go for mSATA or choose the regular 2.5" format?
    Rainmaker91
P.S: I should probably just inform that Lenovos solutions is not an option due to it's extreme price and the drives beeing outdated. Also I don't need the Lenovo warranty and support due to the "Warranty" provided by law in my country.

I have replaced my 500GB HD with a 2.5" Samsung 830 series, 128 GB SSD. After researching the benefits of both the "Main Drive" socket and the mSATA socket, I learned that in virtually ALL Laptops, the mSATA socket is limited to only mSATA II speeds, ie. 3 GB/sec, while the Main Drive socket can handle the 6 GB/sec characteristic of the SATA III properties. This higher speed is, after all, why one would go to the trouble of replacing the Drive to begin with. I did also put a 120 GB mSATA SSD in my WWAN socket (I have an Edge 530), where I store most of my new programs for easy, fast retrieval...So, I would definitely go with the 2.5" SSD.....fruhlpmd.....

  • Expresscache on Lenovo Twist s230u

    Hello,
After installing latest drivers for Expresscache (1.3.110.0) for Twist s230u, Expresscache stopped working. "eccmd -info" command outputs "Failed to retrieve product license". Restarting service, re-installing didn't help. Does anybody have similar issues? What is possible to do to resolve them? Thank you.

So, that's what staff at Condusiv.com (devs. of Expresscache) replied about latest installed drivers of Expresscache, downloaded from Lenovo:
"It appears that the version of ExpressCache is not an Lenovo specific application. Please contact Lenovo Support and obtain a Lenovo specific version of ExpressCache. The application will check the BIOS string for the specific manufacturer prior to enabling the product."

  • Removing battery from Lenovo Twist S230u laptop?

Hello. I am sending my S230u laptop by air to a Lenovo service station to get its HDD replaced. One of their requirements is to remove the battery from the laptop since it is considered a 'hazardous' material.
Is it actually possible to remove the battery off an S230u? I've been searching online and it appears you can only disable the battery. Any help would be really appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Thinkpad Twist S230u: Clean Install - Windows 8 on Custom Partition

I want to install Windows 8 using my own partition configuration, meaning where I'd get a C and a D drive. On my other computers, this is what I have and I really like this configuration. I want to install Windows 8 on the C drive and have all my data on D. I have reformatted and partitioned the HDD to C and D. When I slot in Windows 8 Enterprise to install, I keep getting this message "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one." What the machine keeps wanting is for me to delete both partitions and create its own partitions and I don't want this. I know it wants this because I have clicked delete of the partitions and looked to see what it would do. It ended up creating several of its own partitions (not at all how I want it). When I re-partitioned the drive back to C and D (2 partition config), it would repeat that same error message.
Can someone please help tell me how do I install Windows 8 doing my own custom partition (C, D) where Win 8 is installed onto my choice of C and D is left for my data. Why does it keep saying, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one"? Is it a settings in BIOS that I need to change to enable me to use my own partition? If so, what setting? I have never had these issues installing Win 8 using the C & D partition config on 3 other computers (not Lenovo S230u Twist).
    Thanks for your help!!! :-)

    Hello LightspeedX!
I glad you wrote this issue cause i still having the same problem (and questions).
I decided to put everithing down on my s230u because it is quietly irritant see a last generation porcessor like the I7 on a top plataform ultrabook running so slowly like our thinkpad do.
Since the embed software and the poor resource planning is the resposable for that issue, i really cant imagine why Lenovo decide to bring all this things up together at this device. I realize that any cheap I3 china device is more confortable and "quickly" to run any software than this machine in his original state (factory defaults), so i decid to try a brand new and clean installation of windows 8 or (perhaps) a dual boot configuration using a linux frindly distro like ubuntu.
At my own risc, like the cusummer service like to say, i will erase all HD and start this "saga" (making a full hard copy first, of course and will soon bring any results i found here.

  • Lenovo Twist recovery problem

    Hi everybody.
I've just got my new Lenovo Twist s230u with Win 8 installed. First thing I wanted to do was to install linux on it. Everything seemed working fine, I knew 'bout recovery partition, so I hoped to re-install Windows, if smth. bad occurs.
I formatted two partitions (unfortunately I don't remember neither their labels nor sizes). Linux worked properly and everything was fine. But soon I understood that my windows is still unregistered, so my warranty can be spoiled. I entered the recovery menu and pressed reset button. But the recovery tool said, that some useful partition is missing.
On linux I can see several partitions:
    LENOVO_RECOVERY
    WINRE_DRV
SSD partitions and my linux partitions.
So I'm sure I didn't format the recovery partition.
Please help me to recover my pc. Please say if there is a way to recover it from usb stick or smth. like that. And say a few words 'bout partitioning on Lenovo twist.
    Thanks a lot!

it could be because of you re-partitioned the volume. warranty may cover the issue if you have valid one ( international warranty - iws - )
try to burn default backup before ordering dvd sets.
you can order recovery discs. call lenovo support line.

  • Disappointed by Twist S230u display touch did not work

I bought new Lenovo twist s230u from ANTOnline.com on 10th Jun and received it on 15th Jun same day I have identified its touch screen not working reported back to ANTOnline and then suggested to contact Lenovo thinkpad support so i did initially they suggested to refresh and reload OS but that did not workand finally I had to send the laptop to Lenovo service center, now Lenovo took 2 weeks to repair buggi laptop screen and mother board as laptop screen was coming from china so i received back laptop with list of five component they have change and also a paper saying quality and functional testing pass well as soon as I started laptop touch screen started working but it took me 10 mins to figure out that laptop is not functioning properly as screen rotation button was not fitted propely so screen was not rotating and it was getting stuck, lower volumn button was not fitted properly so it was always on mute and I could not increase the volumn and third defect and best is now touch pad stoped working so I callled Lenovo thinkpad service again and sent laptop back to them again now its been two weeks more and laptop is still with them and support notes shows that they have changes few more parts in that laptop
I feel like lenovo dont have any quality in their products its been more than months I bought it and i am still not able to use it infact it is not with me I feel like I m fooled by ANTOnline and Lenovo both as I feel like i bought refurbished than new as it has so many issues. How long will i be sending laptop to Lenovo service i bought new to use not to repair untill it is in warrenty I am not even aware where should i put the complaint about it..

  • Lenovo Twist - How do you copy Win 8 Pro onto recovery partition?

I upgraded my Lenovo Twist (3347-4HU) from Win 8 to Win 8 Pro with Windows Media Center (WMC).  How do I copy the newly purchased operating system and WMC to my HDD recovery partition so that if I ever have to do a restore, it will restore Win 8 Pro with WMC and not the original copy of Win 8 that came on the computer?  My concern is if a recovery is done from the factory recovery partition, I will lose my upgrade that I purchased.

Another option would be to make a full-drive backup to an external HDD.  You can use the oddly named "Windows 7 File Recovery" feature to make the backup.
It's probably a good idea to do that on a regular basis.

  • Twist s230u error msg: Lenovo-24964.vbs.txt

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist s230u-2hu with Windows 8. A text message appears often with the name
    Lenovo-24964.vbs.txt with the following content:
    Set shellObject = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    resultCode = shellObject.Run ("""C:\ProgramData\Lenovo\SupportTVSU/SupportFeed.CMD""", 0, True)
    Set shellObject = Nothing

What is this and how do I fix it? Thanks very much

    Hi, bobzig
I am unsure as to what this error means and why it happens, but I was able to find another thread in the forums speaking about a similar issue. The user who originally posted the question had an issue exactly like yours, except the code at the top had a different number. The body of the text was the same, however. A Lenovo employee, someotherguy, offered assistance that worked for at least one of the users, so it may work for you as well.
    Best of luck,

  • Why does the default install make a partition for boot?

The installer, if one lets it prepare one's hard drive, makes a partition for boot, and formats it as a second extended filesystem. I know that people debate the need for/desirability of a partition for boot, and I do not mean to revive that debate. Rather, I am interested in knowing why the Arch developers, like the developers of some other distributions, such as Gentoo, but unlike some, such as Slackware, call for a boot partition, with ext2fs file system, on a default install. Should Arch users interpret this as a recommendation? Also, why is the partition quite a bit larger (although tiny compared to the available space on hard drives these days) than seems necessary?
    Thanks.

I've looked at a couple of books and a fair number of internet posts on this, and I must say that these responses are a good deal more concise and clear than what I have come across. I did find it interesting that the Slackware on-line manual doesn't make any effort to encourage it. On the other hand, what you guys are saying sounds sensible enough.
I have both Arch and Gentoo running, sharing a boot partition, which I set at 50MB. I'm using 25% of it, which is why I ask about size - obviously not in terms of overall capacity, but in terms of need.
Why not a lot less - say, even if one is considering dual boot, 20MB? And where do numbers like 32MB come from (the Arch, and indeed Gentoo, default, also referred to by T-Dawg)? Why not use round numbers?
Does 32MB have some rational/irrational/astrological/lucky 7 connection to 64MB RAM, sort of like designating 128MB as swap instead of using numbers like 120MB or 125MB or 130MB?
As you probably know, in Gentoo this stuff is done on the command line in fdisk, and I found it quite odd to be told in their manual to tell fdisk that the boot partition should be 32MB (assuming a single operating system) and swap should be 256MB, especially since fdisk and my hard drive took these numbers with a grain of salt and conspired to adjust them to slightly different numbers complete with decimals. Arch, on default, does the same.
Then I find out that with two operating systems, I'm using about 13MB out of 50MB (or rather 49.9MB, as fdisk and my hard drive decreed)
To change the subject a bit, I think that it is a good idea that the current version of Arch .08 would create, on the default track, a /home partition. There are some nice ideas in the install dialogue, including in the section on setting up a hard drive.
