Default PDF handler

Hi,
I've installed Adobe's Reader and Acrobat Professional on my Mac, and one of them is now the default handler for PDFs on Safari. How can I revert to the default settings?
Thanks

Hi,
If you want Safari to open PDF's go to a PDF file on your hard drive then right or control click that file then click Get Info.
Click the pop up menu next to: Open with
Select Safari or your default PDF reader.
Click: Change All

  • "Select default PDF handler" greyed out in Acrobat XI and Reader X

MIS just installed Acrobat XI for me, and now all PDFs from the web open in the Browser, which is not the way I usually operate.  I went to Preferences > General in both programs, and in both the "Select default PDF handler" option is greyed out.  Any suggestions?

Go to Edit-> prefrences-> Internet and Change the settings to open PDF In browser.
Please See the below Link :

  • Change default PDF handler

I downloaded  a trial of Adobe Acrobat...didn't buy it.  Have Adobe Reader, but the default is now Adobe Acrobat.  How do I change it so I can download to/with Adobe Reader?

In either app, choose Edit > Preferences > General > Select default PDF handler.

  • Many of our users can't open PDFs.  We have to select Reader as the Default PDF Handler once a day.

What was once an infrequent problem, has become a chronic issue since some changes were made to Group Policy by an AD admin.  We've disabled all the GPs that pertain to Acrobat, but we're still having to log into users' workstations to remind Acrobat Reader that it is the Default PDF Handler (as found under Edit>Preferences>General.)
As I mentioned above, this used to happen occassionally, and I'm not really sure why.  We use versions 9.5, X and XI, and all of them have exhibited this problem in the past and currently.  If we could find a network-wide solution to this issue (rather than having to log into scores of individual workstations every day), we would be really happy.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

We think we've found the answer.  Apparently, an admin from six years ago had created an ironically named batch file called "Adobe Fix.bat" which called a login script to put the following registry key on every computer:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 8.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe\""
Since C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 8.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe doesn't exist on any computer anymore, no PDFs would load until you told Acrobat what software to use to open them.
Removing this script should fix the problem.

  • After installing Reader XI, why can't Acrobat be set as default PDF handler?

I've tried everything I know, including a clean boot.  Every time I try to set Win7 to open PDFs with Acrobat (Version 8.3.1), it sets it back to Reader XI.
From inside Reader/Preferences/General/Select Default PDF Handler, Reader XI is the only option.  Acrobat isn't listed.

Unfortunately there is no option post installation with Acrobat 8 to change PDF ownership. However this is possbile Acrobat 10 onwards. But yYou can choose to make Reader XI the default PDF handler during installation itself.
    1. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, select the entry "Adobe Reader XI" and Un-install.
    2. Then visit link : http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and choose the Reader which you need.
    3. When you double click the EXE, then a screen will come showing extraction of files. As soon as extraction ends, installation will begin and you will be presented with following screen :
    4. Uncheck the checkbox which says "Make Adobe Reader my default PDF viewer"
Acrobat 8 will remain default PDF viewer on your machine.

  • How to get rid of "Acrobat Pro is not currently your default PDF reader"

    Hi,
I am testing 3rd party crypto suite integration into Acrobat. Each time I fire it up it pesters me again to set the default PDF handler for OS X to Acrobat Pro which I never, ever want.
Is there any way to get rid of this massage? If not, I'd suggest the decision makers for this suffer from loading an 1000 page+ crypto standard document in Acrobat when it fires up :->
    regards,
         Tom_E

There should be a check box in the dialog box that you are seeing to set it so that this dialog is not shown again.

  • How to disable pop up Make Adobe Reader my default PDF Application in registry

    Hi
I am wondering if there is a registry setting that can disable the pop-up Make Adobe Reader my default PDF Application ?
I have seen there is a setting under Edit\Preferences\General\"Tell me if Adobe Reader is not my default PDF Application" but cannot find a registry setting to disable this. This message pops up for some users in a remote desktop session host environment even though I have disabled the messages on the session hosts.
    Thanks,

    3)Go to General under Categories
    4) Click on "Select Default Pdf Handler"

  • Acrobat Ignore "Set as default PDF Viewer" Setting

    Hello,
I see from previous posts that this has been an issue for a while. I have an image that contains Adobe Reader. That image is deployed to all users. Some users get Acrobat Pro. also. So I went thru the whole customization tool and selelcted "Make Acrobat the default PDF viewer" and am using the Setup.ini and .MST file. Everything else works - skips EULA, reads serial number - everything but making Acrobat Pro the default PDF reader. After I install it and launch it for the first time I am presented with the "make Acrobat reader your default PDF viewer" question. How can I set this once and for all and not prompt every single user?

Unfortunately there is no option post installation with Acrobat 8 to change PDF ownership. However this is possbile Acrobat 10 onwards. But yYou can choose to make Reader XI the default PDF handler during installation itself.

  • PDF handler issue reading Schwab brokerage statements

I cannot read my brokerage statements on my Schwab account. I can read various PDF files (on my Schwab account), but when I click on a brokerage statement, it opens up a new screen flashes for a second and reports done, but the screen is blank. No error message. A part of the link name has "PDFHandler" in it; whereas, when I choose other PDFs to view, it does not. I have Windows 7 Adobe 10 and as mentioned in other threads went into Adobe Reader and set it as the default PDF handler (it was the only thing available in the pulldown BTW). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the quick response, Bill. On your hunch that the browser
might make a difference,  I tried clicking on the same sites' .pdf files in
Chrome and IE, rather than my normal Firefox browser. They opened on-screen
without a problem.  Looks like I may have a Java plugin problem in Firefox,
rather than an AA XI issue.  Also looks like Windows Vista supports AA XI
    without a problem.

  • Hyperlinked files opens with Pro even though Reader is default PDF application

    Hello.
I have a Windows 2008 x64 Server that I have installed both Adobe Pro X and Adobe Reader X on. I have installed Pro first, then Reader, both with MST files, so that Reader is the default PDF viewer.  Reader shows as the default program and if you double click on a PDF document, Reader does indeed open.  However, if a hyperlink in Word or some other document points to a PDF file, Adobe Pro opens instead.  I need to make Reader the default application for all references to PDF files, but I need to keep Pro and Reader installed on the server at the same time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,
Could you try re-setting the default PDF handler to Adobe Reader 10.1.2 again and see if it helps. You can do the same by:
    1. Launching Reader.
    2. Goto Edit > Preferences > General
    3. Click on "Select Default PDF Handler" and chose Reader. If its set as Reader initially, try switching it to Acrobat and then back to Reader again, to remove any incorrect associations on your system.

  • Default file handler in frefox

    Hello,
I'm recently switched from Konqueror to Firefox @ KDE. Everything works fine, but one thing that irritates me is that FF doesn't know how to use the KDE mime types DB. So for every file (doc/pdf/odt/xls etc) I have to point to the correct binary using the truly annoying file browser dialogue from Firefox.
So I started looking around how for example Opera handled it, and that browser opens the downloaded file with `kfmclient exec`, which automatically seems to open the file in the correct app. But the problem is, that with Firefox, I still have to point every file to that binary, which is almost as inconvenient as having to point each filetype to the real binary.
Does anyone know how to define a default file handler in Firefox? Or another way to let FF use the KDE filetype database? Thanks in advance.

phrakture wrote:Firefox uses gnome's file associations if available.  There's no way around it.  HOWEVER, it also allows for /etc/mailcap and ~/.mailcap to override those settings (hooray).  If you can somehow export your kde settings to mailcap format, that would work.
That's a shame. I guess I'm going to switch back to Konqeror. It's way faster and lighter anyway

  • Issues with setting "Maked Reader the default PDF viewer" with Adobe Customization Wizard XI

I am using the Adobe Customization Wizard XI. I have set the following options in the Adobe Customization Wizard.
    Personalization Options
Enabled the checkbox for Suppress display of End User License Agreement (EULA)
    Installation Options
Selected the radio button for Make Reader the default PDF viewer
Run Installation: selected radio button Silently(No Interface)
    Security
Enhanced Security Settings - Clicked drop down and set value to Disable
    Online Services and Features
    Checked Disable product updates
Checkd In Adobe Reader, disable Help > Purchase Adobe Acrobat
    Checked Disable Product Improvement Program
Checked Disable Viewing of PDF with Ads for Adobe PDF
Checked Disable all Adobe online services based workflows and entry points.
I have tried to deploy the MSI with MST via GPO and Command Line with no luck.  Every time i deploy via below methods, the same result occurs, all of the options are set correctly except the "Make Reader the default PDF viewer".  I know how to manually set this option via Windows or Adobe interfaces but i am looking to roll this out to the masses and would not want a bunch of service desk calls because a user clicks on an Adobe PDF file and it is not opening in Adobe Reader.
    GPO
    Create New Package Use AcroRead.msi
    Choose Advanced
Deployment Options - Click Uninstall this application when it falls out of the scope of management.
Modifications - Select Transform file located in the folder of MSI
    Command Line.
Tried these options to try and apply "Make Reader the default PDF viewer"
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst"
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst" /qn
    msiexec /i "<path>\AcroRead.msi" IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst" IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read /qn
Anyone know how to make this setting work with the Transform file, i sure would appreciate assistance on this issue.

  • Illustrator Default PDF, if open in Acro Pro, drag and drop other .ai files, will they also....

Hi! I'm trying to archive (for myself and others for easy access) about 50 fairly complex .ai files in a single Illustrator Default PDF and maintain editability and preserve layer and grouping integrity for every separate file, and, i'm probably going to have to do this hundreds of times (at least!) in the future. Once i save the initial first pdf file through Illustrator (wish didn't even have to do this, but seems no way to do in Bridge), then open the resulting pdf w Acrobat Pro, can i then just select an entire folder's worth of ai files in Bridge, drag and drop them into the pages panel and still have the dragged and dropped files also preserve all their AI info and layer/ group integrity? An if not, thinking if not based on 20 similar experiments, what's a fast way to do this. Doing this manually each time: opening each file in AI then saving as AI pdf, then combining and arranging them all after the fact, would be, well, fairly effed in terms of time, carpal tunnel, arthritis etc. Experimented w Bridge PDF Output batching (terrible rasterized lo-res results, but great for its intended purpose) and just dragging and dropping into Acrobat (lose complicated layer names and info, all flattened to single layer). Any help most appreciated, and as i do not have regular access to das interwebs  (i live on a boat) would appreciate and heed gentle admonishment if i've misposted or broached any community etiquette here. I've researched this as well as i can but can't find anything efficient/ elegant not involving InDesign, and even then the details are skimpy. Thank You! Getting mentally exhausted and not a little loopy. Keep in mind had to teach myself both Illustrator, Acrobat etc with access to the very limited offline help menus (the boat), so a complex answer involving learning InDesign would be learning curve can't even imagine with everything else struggling to do. But if you're willing to babystep diagram it out for me or can find me a link that does i will not only be eternally grateful but will do my durndest to master it and pass it on....Thanks Again! lil mc szpf
PS If it helps I'm running the diligent dogged dusty beloved workhorse CS4 Design Premium on 27" monitor 2010 Mac (OS X 10.6.8), and took advantage of rare housesitting net access to install all most recent updates of everything, i'm barely competent w AI, PS, BR and been tackling Acrobat for past couple of months now....

im glad that somebody is atleast trying. perhaps i need to be more clear.
i will step by step describe the issue in detail.
    1) i open an email that contains an attachment .dxf or .pdf
    2) i click on the attachment shown in the email and aprompt comes up asking if i want to open or save the attachment.
    3) i select save. (by default it saves to a downloads folder. but i have also chosen to use other folders (when i did that it wouldnt save them)
    4) i highlight the downloads arrow on the right top side of my browser and click it
    5) it pulls down a list of the files that i USED to be able to click and drag onto my destop, or anyplace i chose
    6) used to be when i clicked and held the left mouse button down on top of a file of my choosing it would highlight and as i began to drag, a ghost image would appear of the file i was dragging. showing a (/) symbol next to it showing i couldnt drop the file within the browser and a + simbol showing that i could drop the file when the file was hovering over a place where i could drop the file such as my desktop or other folder. now, when i click and hold on the file.... I DONT get anything. when i drag. nothing follows. while i am "dragging" in the area that is my browser, i get the pointy finger icon. as soon as i enter an area where i could have dropped the file as before, i get my standard cursor arrow.
its really as if the drag and drop feature just dosent work IN FIREFOX.
i can drag and drop files all day long everyplace else.

  • How do I change the default PDF viewer on my iPad so I can easily see annotations?

I keeping missing annotations on PDF because the built-in iPad Mail viewer does not show annotations.  To limit the keystrokes, instead of  using "open with" on each PDF email attachment to view in a third part app, I'd like to just change the mail default viewer. Is that possible with the current iPad operating systems?

No it is not possible to change the default pdf viewer in mail.

  • How can I/Can I make Firefox the default .PDF viewer in Windows 7?

For the basic PDF viewing I do, Adobe Reader is just slow and annoying. I love using Firefox, but unfortunately I cannot set it as the default program to open PDF files. Even when I select Firefox after right clicking and select open with, Windows does not comply. Is there a config option I can change that will allow me to set Firefox as the default PDF reader.
    Thank you for your help.

You can not make Firefox the default for viewing PDF files for the entire Windows Operating System, only the default viewer from within Firefox. Like when PDF files that are downloaded from websites and displayed in Firefox; you can try using '''File > Open File''' from within Firefox to view PDF file that are already saved on that PC, but I'm not sure that will work - I haven't tried doing that.
