Default Permissions and Settings in Windows 7

A Few qustions -
What is the default permissions in windows 7 for:
1. c: - do authenticated users have special permissions by default?
2. Desktop Icons
And for remote assistance - max time invitation can be left open?
Thanks -

Hi,
1. Yes, the Authenticated Users have the special permission on the system root. What’s the goal you want to achieve? You may
refer to the following similar thread to remove the Authenticated Users’ special permission on the system root.
Reference:
Authenticated Users have Create / Append permission on Root of C - can I remove them?
2. What’s your meaning of “the default permission of Desktop Icons”? The permission to modify or delete the Desktop
Icons? If so, please see the following similar thread:
Permission
to change / delete Desktop items
3. By default, an invitation automatically expires after six hours. To cancel an invitation sooner than that, close the Windows Remote
Assistance session that is waiting for an incoming connection.
But you may also set the maximum invitation time.
On the computer that you want someone to connect to, follow these steps:
a)
Open System by clicking the
Start button, clicking
Control Panel, clicking
System.
b)
Click
Remote settings and choose Remote tab.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
c)
Select the
Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer check box.
d)
Click
Advanced, and then, under Invitations, select the time from the two lists.

  • How to make Firefox reset printing to Default Printer and Settings at Startup

Earlier versions of Firefox and most Windows programs that I know of, start by using the default printer with default settings. If you change them, they stay changed for that session, but once you close the program and re-start it, you are back to a clean slate. V3.6 of Firefox now remembers settings such as portrait/landscape, zoom settings, etc. I find myself throwing out paper because I zoomed in on a certain document on Friday, then on Monday inadvertently print 20 pages of a normal page because Firefox remembered the zoom and I forgot about it. I would hate to HAVE to do a print preview EVERY time I printed because I couldn't count on the default settings. Thanks for your help.

Here's a great link with a fix that worked for me.

In addition to Milos’s suggestion, we can try the following settings:

  • Documents and settings

If documents and settings in windows 7 is not  a real folder, why is it that when I use my antivirus it shows that I have a worm located in this path
    c:\documents and settings\all users\kaspersky lab\avp14.0.0\temp\crypt\02a82cc8_db4_crypt_io_copy.tmp

    Can you help me, pleeeeease???

Try taking ownership of the file before trying to delete it. See
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx
Can you tell us which Anti-Virus program you are using?
If you are actually using Kaspersky Anti-Virus you may need to do one or both of the following before taking ownership:
    - disable self-defense component
    - pause protection.
If you are not using Kaspersky, have you used it in the past on this Windows installation?

  • How do I stop Citrix Receiver to stop changing my visual settings? (Windows 7 and 8)

My company uses Citrix Receiver to provide remote access to some LOB applications and network resources. I understand it to be a popular system in that market.  Every time I use it, however, it drives me nuts by changing the visual settings on my computer
so that dragging a window results in an outline:
^this happens in Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Probably any OS. I just want to know how to block a program from
    causing it.
This isn't saving any bandwidth: this happens on my locally-running programs on my desktop: they aren't streaming anywhere.  It's like Citrix is trying to take a bandwidth-saving action but applying it to the wrong end.
Even if this was proper behavior (which it absolutely can't be), it should respect the user and put it back when you close your remote connection.  But it doesn't even do that.
This drives me insane.  I've tried setting the display key in the registry to read-only.  This prevents the checkbox in the visual effects page from changing, but doesn't actually block the change itself.  After that happens, you have to go
into the effect settings, set it to to outlines (which it already is), apply, then correct it to full-window and apply again.  But first you have to go allow permissions on the registry settings again, so you aren't saving any time or sanity
    with that trick.
So seriously, is there any way to stop this?  I've tried registry permissions and group policy settings. All seem to only block access to the options a user could use to change it, and not preventing the change from occurring.
I've petitioned Ctrix on their own forums too but I've received no replies in months.

  • "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings." Why?

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:
Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.
The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop
    running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a
few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message. The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt
Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important
those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.
An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use. This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where
the similarity ends. All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders. What does this mean?

Hi Vincent, like I said I tried all of that already and it failed. Thanks a lot for trying to help though. Imperfect1, so sorry I took so long to reply. No that's not the case. I was trying to restore from x86 to x86.
Well, I finally gave up. I've scoured the internet for a solution. You'll probably find duplicates of this post all over. This has been a known software problem with Windows Easy Transfer for years and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it or warn users of
    the risks. Shameful!
Anyway, I managed to recover my files with this life saver of a program here>
    http://www.visser.com.au/blog/migrecover-for-microsofts-windows-easy-transfer/
MigRecover Utility for Microsoft's Windows Easy Transfer.
I can't express how grateful I am to the developer and the host for the download. You guys are the most awesomest people ever. Cheers.
Here's how you modify the syntax in commmand prompt if you used a password to protect the mig file in WET>

Just remember to change the source drive letter in "C:\SaveData.MIG" to the actual drive it's stored on if your MIG file is on an external drive like mine was; whether it's E:, F:, G: or whatever.
Good luck to anyone with the same issue who stumbles upon this post. I hope it helps you as it did me.

  • Set default directory and file permissions

I'm trying to use setfacl to set the default permissions for directories and files but I get an error saying "sudo: setfacl: command not found." What I am trying to do is share a specific directory on a local external drive connected by Thunderbolt. Everyone in the group has access to the drive and can view all the files but once a new file is created, the group permissions are not updated. Here is an example of two PDF file. The one created by userA only has permissions for that user where the file created by userB allows all users to open and modity the file.
    -rw-------   1 userA    staff   1988176 Feb 13 15:09 TestFile01.pdf
    -rwxr-----+  1 userB  staff   1827102 Feb 13 15:05 TestFile02.pdf
    0: group:MarketingGroup allow read,write,append,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity
I can manually update the permissions through the Get Info window but this requires me to reset permissions every time a person saves a new file to the drive. There needs to be a way to do this automatically.
Here is what I tried but the setfacl command is not supported.
    sudo setfacl -Rdm g:GroupName:rwx /DirectoryPath

Thanks Frank. I have an externat drive connected to my Mac via Thunderbolt. On this drive I have a specific directory that I'm shairing with Mac and PC users. I've created a group on the network to limit access to this directory to specific users. That works perfectly. The issue I'm having is when one of these users creates a new file in this directory or any of it's subdirectories, no one has permission to open or edit the file. Right now I'm using Get Info to modify the permissions of the folder and all enclosed items. When I check the permissions of the files I've "corrected" I notice this extra imformation "0: group:MarketingGroup allow read, write, append, readattr, writeattr, readextattr, writeextattr, readsecurity." This is not included when I check the permissions of items saved by other uses in the group.
So my question is how do I set the default permissions for this directory so every new file and directory will have the correct permissions to allow anyone in this group full access to open and modify every file?
    Thanks for your help!!!!

  • Regional and Language Settings for Window and BEX Style

    Hi All,
When I change the Regional and Language Settings for Windows, Standards and Formats value to English (USA) the standard Style for BEX is active. For instance, input-ready cell is bordered with blue. But when I switch to Turkish this style is not active.
Additionally, I have to change Style for each Workbook one by one. How can we adopt a style to every workbook.
    Regards,

    Lars,
This is a setting on the 'Defaults' tab in the User Profile. This can be set when a new user is set-up in SU01, or it can be changed by each user according to personal preference in SU3. I'm sure there is a system table where these settings are stored that could probably be edited for all users, if that is desired, but I don't know which table that would be off the top of my head.
    Hope this helps...

  • Firefox is creating endless copies of C:\Documents and Settings\Catain Kirk\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\afbrfhnj.default\Cache ... how do I stop it

    I just installed 9.0.1 and it continually creates copies of C:\Documents and Settings\Catain Kirk\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\afbrfhnj.default\Cache ... how do I stop it !!!
    I'm running Windows XP Version 5.1 SP3.

    Hi,
That is the disk cache of Firefox, where contents of loaded pages are kept for faster retrieval and it also helps to conserve bandwidth. To disable this: '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''Network''', check (tick) '''Override automatic cache management ''' and put the value at zero.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
