Default permissions on /usr/share/ and its subdirectories?

I think I've goofed up my permissions on /usr/share and its subdirectories? Can someone tell me the default permissions, please?
Also, is there a place in the docs where default permissions on various directories are listed?
Thanks.

(Pretty much) all directories are 755 and files are 644.
These files are executable too if it helps (if you can't reinstall your packages via cache):

  • Process all files in a directory and its subdirectories

    Hello all,
I want to write a program that processes separately all the files in a given directory. I would like to open folders in that directory (if any) and further process all the files contained in them as well. Any suggestions with some Java code to do this as time effectively as possible? Thanks in advance.

    Hello Chuck,
thanks for answering. You probably meant: "Search the forum archive - maybe your question has already been discussed. This way you help people focus on topics that have not yet been resolved."
Generally http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=31&threadID=510545 suits well. My problem is however, that I would like to pass the absolute path (not the relative one) of the directory which content (including subdirectories if any) should be further processed. Any suggestions how to make it function with the absolute path passed as input argument to the program?

  • NFS4 shares and mounted subdirectories

    Hello,
i have some troubles configuring my nfs4 shares on my server. I have some nested filesystem setup, which i should explain first. The directories on my system partition are as follows: (Both directories named "Data" are empty)
    /mnt
    /mnt/Data
    /srv
    /srv/nfs4
    /srv/nfs4/Data
I mount a LVM volume on /mnt/Data, thats where i have most stuff. On this volume there exists an empty directory "SquashFS", which will then be "filled" by mounting "SquashFS.sqsh" there. Now i can access any stuff unter /mnt/Data on the server.
    /mnt
    /mnt/Data
    /mnt/Data/some
    /mnt/Data/things
    /mnt/Data/SquashFS.sqsh
    /mnt/Data/SquashFS
    /mnt/Data/SquashFS/compressed_things...
    /srv
    /srv/nfs4
    /srv/nfs4/Data
Now i want to access all that stuff from my desktop or any other remote computer. Because symlinks are not working here for nfs4, i bind mount /mnt/Data to /srv/nfs4/Data and export the directory with the "nohide" option. I can access all stuff, but /srv/nfs4/Data/SquashFS is empty.
So i tried to bind mount /mnt/Data/SquashFS to /srv/nfs4/Data/SquashFS, but that didn't helped. Next i could try out to export /srv/nfs4/Data/SquashFS with the "nohide" option. I think that this will work, but i have the feeling i make something really wrong. With a couple of such situations your exports and fstab get mixed up soon, i think.
Somebody have some recommendations or guides how to solve this? Or some tips how to better organize such files?
    Thanks in advance,
    Fabian

  • Default permissions issue

I recently tried upgrading our server from 10.4 to 10.5 and we're having trouble with default permissions. We have a small mixed AFP/SMB workgroup and we want items created in sharepoints to be readable and writable by other members of the group. In 10.4 the setting under AFP for default permissions for new files and folders didn't seem to work (but I got round it by manually changing a umask setting). After we upgraded and were having probIems with restricted permissions, I looked for that setting in 10.5. The manual, under "Changing AFP Settings for a Share Point", says:
*If you are using only POSIX permissions, choose a method for assigning default access*
*privileges for new files and folders in the share point:*
*To have new items use default POSIX permissions, select “Use standard POSIX*
    behavior.”
*To have new items adopt the privileges of the enclosing item, select “Inherit*
    *permissions from parent.”*
However the setting does not seem to be there in Server Admin. I thought maybe it was because ACLs were enabled, so I followed the procedure described in the manual for disabling them, but after restart, they were still enabled, and still no AFP default permissions setting. Again, the manual says
*You can unnecessarily complicate file access management if you’re not careful. Keep it*
*simple. If standard POSIX permissions do the job, use those, but if you must use ACLs,*
*avoid customizing permissions unless you need to.*
But it seems I am being forced into using ACLs to do something which surely should be straighforward. Or am I missing something?

Okay, I think I got where I wanted to get to using ACLs, but it would have been nice if the manual hadn't been a little misleading...

Hello, I have installed LXDE with pcmanfm. After installation, I ran:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    but i got
cp: cannot stat /usr/share/lxde/pcmanfm/pcmanfm.conf No such file or directory
How can I resolve this problem?

    zertyz wrote:
The reported "bug" still persists to date -- when following the LXDE Wiki article.
I "solved" by installing the package 'pcmanfm' and running the following commands:
    mkdir -p /usr/share/lxde/pcmanfm
    cp -a /etc/xdg/pcmanfm/default/pcmanfm.conf /usr/share/lxde/pcmanfm/pcmanfm.conf
    []s
    Luiz.
I had to create a symbollic link to get my wallpaper to show up.
    ln -s ~/.config/pcmanfm/defaut/pcmanfm.conf ~/.config/pcmanfm/pcmanfm.conf
Since both of the problems seem to me to be confined to archlinux (neither of the problems occur in a gentoo installation,) I would think that the bug should be reported to archlinux and not upstream.

  • Environment variable for share and etc

Hi all, first let me say sorry if this is the wrong sub-section, This one is the closest as far as I could tell.
I've been messing around with building self-contained packages for top level apps like gimp, vlc etc. Ive gotten all the libraries worked out by using LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
However they still need files in /usr/share and /etc. I know I can change these at compile time, but what im trying to do change some variable to look in the programs root directory not the systems.
Does anyone know if sysconfdir can be changed at runtime? for example use ~/Progs/Gimp/usr/share instead of /usr/share? Ive been playing around with a command called cde which sandboxes that apps fairly well
but its very unclean, and is not aware of any files outside the sandbox (think chroot).
Thanks in advance, and sorry for my bad grammer.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it

I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes  in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill  pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes.

  • "Permissions differ on usr/share/derby"

    Hi,
After some strange behavior on my MacPro I verified disk permissions and got:
Permissions differ on "usr/share/derby" should be drwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x
    and
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Repair disk permissions does not fix the problem.
Any advice aside from reinstalling Snow Leopard?
    Thank you.

The “l” in lrwxr-xr-x stands for “link” and just means that the corresponding file is an alias file, whereas “d” in drwxr-xr-x stands for “directory” and means it's a folder. In Mac OS X 10.6.3, the /usr/share/derby file is an alias to the /usr/share/java/derby-10.5.1.1 folder, however both actually have the same read/write permissions (rwxr-xr-x).

  • SCCM 2012 report on computers with local shares and share permissions

Very new to SCCM 2012, want to put together a report to show computers with local shares and the permissions on those shares (for security purposes, need to investigate any systems that have open shares_.
Managed to add and now collecting information that populates v_gs_share and I have a handle on the report itself, just wondering how to collect the share permissions - I've seen other qustions on the boards that are similar but reference earlier versions
of SCCM so wondering how to do it in 2012.
    Thanks

So, where are you at?  The script is running, and the clients have the data in their local WMI namespace, root\cimv2\sms_sharepermissions ?
So all that's left is to modify hardware inventory to pull that custom WMI Namespace in?  If so, it's not too horrid.  Take note of a workstation (or server) to which you have remote rights to; and which has run the script, so that on THAT specific
    machine, root\cimv2\SMS_SharePermissions exists.
In your CM12 Console, Administration, Client Settings.  Right-click "Default Client Settings", Properties.  On the left, select "hardware inventory".  then on the right, Set classes..., now the fun part.
    Add...
Connect..., and put in ThatServerOrWorkstation (for computername), and wmi namespace is root\cimv2.  Click the option "recursive", Connect.  (the trick here is rights to the target).
From the results, it might be easiest to click on "classname" at the top for sorting, then go find SMS_SharePermissions.  Select that, ok ok ok ok (however many times you need to agree); and... we're done here.  Sit and wait for inventory to report
that data up.  If you're paranoid, you can monitor dataldr.log; and force policy refreshes and hinv deltas on some boxes; but the key is patience.  if you think you've waited long enough; you probably haven't.  ;)

Lightning is a problem for you because it hooks into Thunderbird at a low level and you need a version compiled for the platform Thunderbird is running on. So you can't do the preferred solution, which is to put your whole profile in a shared folder and have both instances of Thunderbird reference the same profile. (Ditto for Enigmail). Lightning may become an integral part of Thunderbird in an upcoming release, at which point this limitation due to Lightning should disappear.
And if you can't use a shared profile, you can't set your Lightning, or your Address Book, to share a common set of files. Put another way, the linkage from Thunderbird to its address book files and calendar data is hard-coded, and not exposed where we can adjust it. :-(
The halfway house is to place your mail stores in a shared place, and use the Local Directory setting in each account's settings to connect to it. They don't need to be in the profile; what's more important in your case is that they are in a folder accessible to both operating systems.
Look in your profile; everything under Mail and ImapMail needs to be moved out to a shared folder. Note the entries in Thunderbird under Local Directory before you do this, and reconstruct those pathnames in Thunderbird, but adjusted to suit their new locations.
(You can see here that you need to make many adjustments, one per account, in each instance of Thunderbird, so it's a high-maintenance solution and this is why we don't recommend it when the alternative, moving the whole profile, is possible.)
I share address books and calendars between Thunderbirds on various computers (and my phone and tablet) by syncing to something in the cloud; Google Contacts and Google Calendar are my choices, using gContactSync and CalDav.
Having made the break myself some years ago, I'd recommend you break away from Windows. ;-)

That depends on what you mean. If you mean two iTunes Store accounts, no. Only one Apple ID can be logged into the iTunes Store at a time and if automatic download, iTunes Match or re-downloading of content is used the ID can not be changed for 90 days.
    Shiv1611 wrote:
So i guess if i solve my goof up on creating different apple IDs and setting her phone as a new one .. according to you that shall do the trick.
But i have a question here in that case what happens to all the applications that have been purchased on my Id ? Wont i be needing them to be purchased/downloaded again in the new id?
If you previously had been using the same Apple ID for iTunes Store purchases for both of you there is no reason to change what you've been doing. If this is your wife's first iPhone, and you want to share the iTunes Store account just don't use the new Apple ID you created. As long as there are no purchases on it there's nothing to worry about.

    Hi RJO22,
You can choose configure the Folder Redirection, Folder Redirection enables you to redirect the location of specific folders within user profiles to a new location, such as

I know KDE does not mount anything, it asks HAL. nothing is in
    /etc/fstab but in /etc/mtab and in /proc/mount I got
    $ cat /etc/mtab
    /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal 0 0
    $ cat /proc/mounts
    /dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4
    rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0
I like all my files and folders to be owner by me and NOT by root.
    any help?

Are you using [testing]? Partially updated system?
The error looks like you have a different version of gcc-libs / glibc than the app was built against.

  • Default Permissions and Settings in Windows 7

    A Few qustions -
What is the default permissions in windows 7 for:
    1. c: - do authenticated users have special permissions by default?
    2. Desktop Icons
And for remote assistance - max time invitation can be left open?
    Thanks -

    Hi,
    1. Yes, the Authenticated Users have the special permission on the system root. What’s the goal you want to achieve? You may
refer to the following similar thread to remove the Authenticated Users’ special permission on the system root.
    Reference:
Authenticated Users have Create / Append permission on Root of C - can I remove them?
    2. What’s your meaning of “the default permission of Desktop Icons”? The permission to modify or delete the Desktop
Icons? If so, please see the following similar thread:
    Permission
to change / delete Desktop items
    3. By default, an invitation automatically expires after six hours. To cancel an invitation sooner than that, close the Windows Remote
Assistance session that is waiting for an incoming connection.
But you may also set the maximum invitation time.
On the computer that you want someone to connect to, follow these steps:
    a)
    Open System by clicking the
    Start button, clicking
    Control Panel, clicking
    System.
    b)
    Click
Remote settings and choose Remote tab.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    c)
    Select the
Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer check box.
    d)
    Click
Advanced, and then, under Invitations, select the time from the two lists.
