Default photo folder question....

Is there a way to set the default folder to be my remote storage, so i do not have to load all my pictures onto my hard drive? OR do I have to load them on an as needed basis then delte them to restore the space?

You can as Neil described but it is important that the "remote storage" be directly connected to your system (wired ethernet, firewire, usb or other wired connection) AND that is is formated Mac OS extended (journaled) - the iPhoto library does not operate well on non Mac formatted drives

  • Using Aperture with photos in default Photo Folder in OS X (Newbie)

    Hey guys...
I'm a new Aperture user (1 day) and fairly new to Mac's (5 months). I have a MB Pro with newest OS. Since getting the MBook I've been placing/storing all my photos in /Users/"lastname"/Pictures and then giving each photo "event" a new folder. I first started using iPhoto as an organizer and was not happy with using it. I had used Picasa on my windows machine and it took a few weeks to realize that there was a Mac version for Picasa. It was probably my own fault, but I couldn't figure out how to point iPhoto to my Photos Folder/Directory (maybe its old Windows habits)??? Because of this I installed Picasa and enjoy the easy croping/red eye/face recognition.
HOWEVER!, I wanted to move on to a real photo editor and got Aperture. Now to my question,,,lol
If I "import" all my photos that are currently in a folder/directory order, will Aperture create a duplicate library? And if so, do I bite-the-bullet and use Aperture as my one and only photo organizer, verse my old school ways of organizing photo folders on the hard drive and then going to the folders view via Finder to get a photo??
While writing this I referred to my photo Folder and noticed a iPhoto "library" ...when I click on it, it opens iPhoto and I see photos that I imported these few days I used iPhoto before Picasa. I guess maybe it means I need to get in habit of using the "library" when I want to search out photo for something (emailing, uploading to FB, etc)
    What should I do? Tips?
    Thanks guys!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
and don’t understand why Aperture don’t keep my folders in sync. So if I delete / add a photo to a folder, it does not update the folder in Aperture, as what you would get in Picasa.
Well the very obvious point is that it's not Picasa and doesn't work like that. Picasa is an attempt to use two databases (the Finder and Picasa) to manage the photos. Aperture simply uses one - the Aperture database. If that's not what you want then don't use it.
If I keep with Picasa, what’s the real benefit of using Aperture?
If you cannot see the opportunities that the Aperture offers for organising, and managing your Photos - including most obviously the tight integration with the OS, so that your photos are in every Open... dialogue on your Mac - and if you cannot see the far, far greater opportunities for post processing your Photos offered in Aperture compared to Picasa, then there is no benefit for you.
If, on the other hand, instead of trying to shoehorn Aperture into your Picasa workflow, you take a few moments to learn how to use it - say by looking at the Aperture tutorials on the Apple site - I think you'll find it's a much more powerful and capable application than your current choice.

  • How can I delete a photo folder from my iphone 4s?

how can I delete a photo folder from my iphone 4s?

    Hey Ravengirlaa,
Great question! The answer is going to depend on how the photos were originally organized:
    A) The albums were synced to your iPhone from iTunes
    B) The albums were manually created on your iPhone from photos in the Camera Roll
The following excerpt would apply for situation B:
excerpt from page 71 of the iPhone User Guide - http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
If the photos were synced from your computer, please refer to this article (section "To delete photos and videos from your device"):

  • Bug in default photo lib. application (iPad2)

Hello, today took photos of my daughter. Usually I take HD photos from a professional camera and transfer them to a default photo library to view and store for good. But I've discovered a bud when viewing photos when full zoomed out: right in the middle of the screen you may see a line from the top to the bottom, almost like the photo is split in a half and pieces overlap. Really annoying. If you zoom in and then zoom out again it disappears, but still, I qualify it as a bug. Because now it is impossible to just flip the photos to view it properly. You have to zoom in and out every time. I even made screenshots, but I guess this isn't a place to attach them. :(
See it for yourself. Try HD photos and flip them, you'll see what I'm talking about.
QUESTION: Who do I have to write to, in order for this bug to be included into next SW update?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Changes in "Imported Photos" Folder in Lightroom Not Reflected in Lr Mobile

After installing Lr Mobile, I imported all my photos that were on the phone. When I enabled syncing in Lightroom the photos appeared in "Imported Photos" in the Folders section. I then moved them all to other folders. The "Imported Photos" folder was now empty in Lightroom, but the still appeared in Lr Mobile. I then deleted the folder and created a new one. I imported three more photos. Two of them made it to Lightroom. The third one may not have synced because it had done before. Again I moved the photos out of "Imported Photos" and again they still remain in Lr mobile. Is this normal behavior. Do I have to go back and manually delete them?
I have another workflow question. Is there a way to automatically delete photos from the Apple photo app that are auto imported into Lr Mobile? I suspect not, but hope springs eternal. If not is there a camera app that would save photos directly into Lr Mobile?

Thanks Victoria. The sync process created a folder called "From Lr mobile" in my Collections. In it were the folders I had created on my iOS device. One of was set to two way sync. Right clicking on a photo and selecting "Remove from Collection" removed it from the collection on Lightroom and Lr mobile just like Victoria explained. The folder "Imported Photos" is where the photos are stored on the OS X device when the are copied from for iOS device.

  • "All Photos" folder lost

I accidently deleted the "All Photos" folder, and when I clicked undo it didn't come back. I searched all the menu's but I can't find out how to replace the folder.
    Thanks!

    Oops.
    Okay, do this:
    1) Quit Aperture
    2) Control click your Aperture library and select "Show package contents"
    3) Move the "Built-in Smart Albums" folder to the trash
    4) Restart Aperture
All the default smart albums should be back.
    Be more careful next time

  • Managing my library and a folder question

Hello. I have a new computer. I have it set up so that my music downloads to an external drive, and everything is working. My question is about the fact that there is still an iTunes folder on my hard drive. It seems to contain the current library. I have tried to move it, but it does not seem to work.
    1. Is it essential to have a folder on the hard drive?
    2. If I delete that file, what do I need to keep from it?
    3. In the items that I need to keep, how do I get them to work from teh external drive.
I have had 4 computers crash in the last two years, and I am exhausted from doing everything manually aqnd repeatedly.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Kato

I have two iTunes folders on my system. One of them is made by iTunes and is the default library. The other one was made by me, and it is where I keep all my music. It is on an external hard drive. The two main reasons I do this is that in my opinion iTunes does a bad job of organising/naming the actual file structure, and secondly it stops iTunes from managing my music.
Let's be fair, you have gone to the trouble of ripping your collection to your PC, or purchased an online download, you do not want to do it all over again. Why does iTunes assume that by removing a song from the library/iPod you want to delete it off your system all together. Plus make it very easy to do so, I did it a couple of times by mistake, but not any more.
My default library folder is empty except for the stuff iTunes keeps there to enable it to run. I keep this empty because that way iTunes cannot "delete/corrupt/manage" any of my music files. I embed all the artwork myself into the mp3 files, and also keep a backup of the jpg's on my external drive.
iTunes can and does some funny things to your actual files, but only if they are in the default folder. By keeping them seperate, iTunes can have all wobbles it likes, I just delete and reload the library. I very rarely have to do it though.
The library is just a series of shortcuts to the music files, and it does an excellent job as a shortcut manager, player and ripper. It is hopeless as a file manager though, so I let it do what it is good at, and no more.

  • N86 photo storage question.

Is it possible to set up a separate folder in which to store photos, so they don't appear in the albums? For example, if I am using the phone like a flash drive, just as a means of transferring files from one location to another.

    Hi Farby:
Thanks for you input. The photos in question were taken 4 months ago but the phone has only been used for a couple of hours since then. What I'm looking for is secure eraesure of photos before upgrading phone!

  • Outlook 2011 (Mac) Default Search Folder

This question is for Outlook 2011 (Mac)  Does anyone know how to change the default search folder from All Folders in the Contacts Search? I want to make the default folder my company's ldap directory. It works fine when you select it from the list,

  • Can iPhoto keep my photos folder organised?

    Hi All,
I'm new to Mac so apologies if I'm asking a really silly question here. I've had a brief look on the iPhoto support vids but can't find an obvious answer.
I want to know if I can use iPhoto to automatically organize my Photos folder; for example, putting images from specific events into folders named accordingly, in the same way that iTunes can do with tracks and albums etc.
    Cheers,
    Joe

Where are these folders? On the HD? No. In the iPhoto Window? Perhaps, depending on exactly what you are tryng to do.
iPhoto is designed for folsk who want to organise their Photos not their files. Import your pics to iPhoto and it copies the files to the Library. You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - and anything you need to do can be done via that window. And I do mean anything: edit in iPhoto, edit in another app, email, print, share to other applications, upload to Web sites and so on.
How the files are organised on the HD is of no matter as iPhoto tracks the relationship between what do in the iPhoto Window and the location of the files.
So, how do you access the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
I generally recommend to new users that the best thing to do is import 100 or 200 photos to iPhoto and explore. It's a very capable app, but there is a learnign curve and it may not be right for you.
    Regards

  • Why do i always create recovered photos folder every time i start up iPhoto?

Every time i open iPhoto '09 IO get a message that says, "74 ITEMS WERE FOUND IN IPHOTO LIBRARY THAT HAVE NOT BEEN IMPORTED, WOULD YOU LIKE TO IMPORT NOW?" I have tried to import and also cancel and it keeps coming up.  What an annoyance!!  How do I remove this because it creates a recovered photo folder in my library each time... It has done this ever since I bought the program just didn't have time to ask for help! LOL

Right Click - point to the iPhot  library (by default in your pictures folder) and click on the right mouse button (or control - click for a single button mouse - or two finger click for a default track pad
You may want to invest in a couple of basic training classes

  • Can't startup blinking folder question mark

There are similar questions in these forums, but my situation is different. My MacMini froze and I had to press the power button on it to restart it. I get the folder with the blinking question mark. I do not have any disks in the drive. I have not installed any new operating systems for at least a year. No external drives connected. I shut off and started the Mac Mini yesterday with no problems.
I tried the Enter/Return key; no response. I restarted and tried the Command-Option-P-R to reset the P-Ram; got the same blinking folder question mark. I restarted and tried the Command-Option-O-F also. I just keep getting the same blinking folder question mark.
So, if anyone has any suggestions, I will sure appreciate it!

It turns out that my SATA just wen't dead. I've been experiencing several power outages while my iMac still is running. I also noticed months ago that whenever I verify disk permission there are some stuff that is beyond repair and it shows red. I just ignore it thinking that it will go away and the inevitable happened. Good thing though I just have a few gigabytes of photos taken months back I had a full backup on all the docs that I have. I tried resurrecting my Western Digital 160GB SATA using Spinrite V6 but to no avail. BIOS from Windows can't even mount the drive. I've given it up. I still have a one last hope though to bring the dead drive to a data recovery company. And hope that they can replace the SATA board or the mechanical part with a new one on a clean room and recover what they can for a fee.
Is there any hint when a drive is about to fail? I did experience frequent hangings and endless spinning beachball from time to time also some weird sound that seems my hard drive is about to blast by spinning profusely for no apparent reason.
My 160GB SATA drive is about 5 years old. Is this the regular lifespan of SATA drives? Should I replace it every say 3-4 years? I've been using it almost everyday from Monday to Saturday. I'm considering buying a drobo so I can dump all my files without worries of being burn again by a terrible Hard Disk Crash!!!
I've re installed everything on my imac using the new 500GB SATA. Good thing that everything was fine except for the SATA Drive. I've bought an AVR and 500VA APC (Power Backup incase of Power Outage) so that I could prevent it from happening again. Also do you have any idea what brand of SATA is the quietest the most silent? Thanks for your help.

  • How to keep photo order when opening default photo app?

First it concerns the default photo App: I have created an Album based on recent photos imported from the cloud, there are 125 photos in them, for some reason they are in the wrong order, i.e. by date. I know how to rearrange one photo at a time, but it's painfully slow to go through all 100s of them.
Second, there is the iPhoto App: I downloaded iPhoto app from the iWork suite, that came free for me, it gave me an option to sort photos by date, hooray!
BUT!! when I close iPhoto and reopen the default photo app, the photos were no longer sorted, it was the same order before the sort!
My question is, how on earth do I sort an album in iPhoto and to keep that order when I open the album through the default photo app or indeed any other app that uses the iOS albums such as facebook etc?

As far as i know, you can't, when using iphoto, the sort is only for iphoto, apps on ios do not have access to one anothers data, ever, you can transfer a file from one app to another app that supports the file format but then you have two independent copies of that file.
