Default Printer not sticking in 10.4.10

This is something I've just noticed in the last few days.
I have three printers plus the Adobe PDF printer in my printer list: an Epson SC Photo 2200 with all of its variants, an Epson SC 740, a LaserWriter IIg (in great shape), and the PDF virtual printer.
Although I have repeatedly set the Epson 2200 Standard Minimize Margins as my default printer, every time I select a different printer in the Print dialog box, that one becomes the default printer. I have to launch the Printer Setup Utility to change it back.
I print to the Epson 2200 out of Photoshop CS3 and other Adobe applications, to the Apple Laserwriter IIg out of Word and Excel, to the Epson 740 out of Firefox, and to PDF out of Firefox, Word, TextEdit, etc.
It doesn't matter in which application I call the Print command, whichever printer I choose in the printer driver dialog box or in Page Setup becomes the default printer.
Everything is printing fine, but I would prefer to have a constant default printer. Photoshop CS2 and CS3 have printing issues unless the default printer is the one to which I'm printing.
This anomaly has been happening since before a video display card upgrade two days ago.
Has there been a change, or do I need to start thinking about Archive and Install of the OS?
I'm a fanatic about Repairing Permissions before and after any software install or update, running DiskWarrior, etc.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

  • Why do I keep getting default printer not supported?

    I have had my printer for aprox.three years without a problem, now I get default printer not supported and printer not activated error code 30

    Hi there,
    Could you provide the community with a little more information to help narrow troubleshooting? Things like your printer model and your operating system help out a lot.
    You can say thanks by clicking the Kudos Star in my post. If my post resolves your problem, please mark it as Accepted Solution so others can benefit too.

  • HT3387 Default printer not used despite selecting it in Sys Pref Print & Fax. I have tried all of the suggestions including Inspector Window formatting. The docs were originally created in AppleWorks

    I have scoured these pages and cannot find a solution (is there one?) to the problem I have in printing to the default printer that I selected in Print & Fax. The documents were originally created in Appleworks (preceded iWorks/Pages) and "converted" to Pages by simply dragging them to a blank Pages template. Of course, I can select the desired printer in the Print dialog window but this can get tedious when printing multiple items. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    This bug has existed for as long as Pages has, since iWork '05, & still has not been fixed.
    The best workaround I've heard of is to create a desktop printer & drag the files to it to print.
    And, most important, leave feedback for Apple, making sure you classify it as a bug. You can find it under the Pages menu > Provide Pages Feedback.

  • Web Report Viewer - Default Printer not picked up

    We have a web application that previews Crystal Reports and prints via ActiveX. The report is set to a printer called 'RICOHC4000Letters'.
    The client side has another printer call 'RICOHC4000' with the same printer driver. And I understand that the ActiveX printing looks for the printer driver on the client side. So if you understand what I mean, the default printer when printing is set to 'RICOHC4000' instead of the one set on the report.
    We are using Crystal Reports 2008 SP3, FP3.3.
    Hope anyone can help or anyone has run in the same situation.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Noel,
    If you search using here you'll find post on how to. Here's one part I used with a common dialog box to select the printer, note this is a Windows app:
    private void btnSetPrinter_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
         System.Drawing.Printing.PrintDocument pDoc = new System.Drawing.Printing.PrintDocument();
        CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.Controllers.PrintReportOptions rasPROpts = new CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.Controllers.PrintReportOptions();
        CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportDefModel.PrintOptions MYPRTOpts = new CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ReportDefModel.PrintOptions();
         if (rdoCurrent.Checked)
              pDoc.PrinterSettings.PrinterName = cboCurrentPrinters.Text;
            MYPRTOpts.PrinterName = cboCurrentPrinters.Text;
            MYPRTOpts.PaperSize = (CrPaperSizeEnum)
                   pDoc.PrinterSettings.PaperSizes[cboCurrentPaperSizes.SelectedIndex].Kind;
            MYPRTOpts.PaperSource = (CrPaperSourceEnum)
                   pDoc.PrinterSettings.PaperSources[cboCurrentPaperTrays.SelectedIndex].Kind;
              // added the below line to verify the changes work.
            MYPRTOpts.PaperOrientation = CrPaperOrientationEnum.crPaperOrientationLandscape;
            MYPRTOpts.PrinterDuplex = CrPrinterDuplexEnum.crPrinterDuplexVertical;
            MYPRTOpts.DissociatePageSizeAndPrinterPaperSize = true;
         else
              pDoc.PrinterSettings.PrinterName = cboDefaultPrinters.Text;
            MYPRTOpts.PrinterName = cboDefaultPrinters.Text;
            MYPRTOpts.PaperSize = (CrPaperSizeEnum)
                   pDoc.PrinterSettings.PaperSizes[cboDefaultPaperSizes.SelectedIndex].Kind;
            MYPRTOpts.PaperSource = (CrPaperSourceEnum)
                   pDoc.PrinterSettings.PaperSources[cboDefaultPaperTrays.SelectedIndex].Kind;
            MYPRTOpts.PrinterDuplex = CrPrinterDuplexEnum.crPrinterDuplexVertical;
            MYPRTOpts.DissociatePageSizeAndPrinterPaperSize = true;
        rptClientDoc.PrintOutputController.ModifyPrintOptions(MYPRTOpts);
         MessageBox.Show("Printer set.", "RAS", MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Information );
         rptClientDoc.PrintOutputController.PrintReport(rasPROpts);
         MessageBox.Show("Printing report.", "RAS", MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Information );
    You can simply ignore that part and this should allow you to print. Also realize this is server side printing only. One option would be to export to PDF, stream that to the users PC and then they can print it locally.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Add printer not sticking through restart

    Hello,
    Something's gone wrong with my printers in that I can't add a printer until I reset the printing system (error message). Then the printer stays (and works fine) until the next time I start up, when I need to reset the printing system again and re-add the printer.
    any ideas on this?
    thanks in advance

    Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.

  • Mapping default printer based on AD attribute

    Hi all !
    Sorry for my english, i'll try to be clear... :)
    I need to run a VBscript on TSE 2008 R2 servers to set computer's
    default printer (not user). For this, I need to use the ClientName var.
    The default printer name is written in the computer's description attribute in Active Directory.

    Here is my script (my comments are written with ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''):

    Hello.
    We need to do this because each computer in the office as a network printer (or nearly each computer). I can't do a Group Policy for each computer in my domain. We cannot work with users accounts, only computers .
    My problem is that if the user1 is connected on Comp1, he must have the printer near computer 1 as default printer.
    If user1 is connected on computer 2, at the other side of the office, he must have the printer near computer 2. So I cannot imagine a group policy to do this :).
    We had the idea to use the descprition attribute in Active Directory to indicate the default printer to map.
    We must now make a script to get clientname on the TSE session, look for the computer account in Active Directory, read its description's attibute and map the default printer.
    For example, my computer is COMP01. I use a TSE environment on SRVTSE01.
    The script need to determine which computer (COMP01) is connected to the SRVTSE01 server (clientname var), search Active Directory computer account of COMP01, read the account's description attribute (for example PRINT01) and set \\SRV-PRINT\PRINT01 as the
    default printer on COMP01.
    Hope it's better with this example...

  • Windows 7 Thinkvantage Access Connections 5.41 does not stick to printer default

    hi
    i have installed windows 7 on 3 lenovo laptops (x60s, x61, t500) and installed AC 5.41 but and have configured them with 5 profiles each with their own default printer preferences but for some reason when i toggle from 1 profile to another the default printer setting does not change accordingly
    this is really annoying as i have managed to print documents to the wrong printer a couple of times and it seems to be accross the board on all my windows 7 installations
    is this happening to anyone else?
    cheers

    no i haven't
    i have now deployed 5 thinkpads (x200 with lenovo windows 7 installation disk) and 4 X61 and T500's with my own windows build and downloaded all the thinkvantage software using system update (had to manually upgrade to 5.42 as system update did not pick up on the updates)
    the printer default sometimes swaps over but often it just defaults to the original ms windows xps writer and not the the one i had specified.
    very frustrating, luckily a lot of my users do not switch locations very often and only print from 1 location but i have some laptop roll outs planned for users who do use this printer default settings a lot and i will get some stick for this.

    On our 6-month old HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 Wireless A909g, we can't seem to figure out how to set the DEFAULT printing parameters so they really apply to all docs (unless we designate otherwise for a particular doc, of course).  When we set them, sometimes they work for the next doc, and sometimes they revert back to an earlier setting.
    There seem to be three ways to set parameters for the printer: Properties, Printing Preferences or Printing Defaults on the Advanced tab.  (We really thought Printing Defaults on the Advanced tab would do it, since it's so hard to find, but ... NOT.)
    My partner thinks it's an HP conspiracy to sell more ink because the reversion is to General with Color (the most ink-intensive, as far as I can figure out).  We are trying to fix the machine to start always with Fast-Economical/Black Ink Only.  Sometimes it's there and sometimes we have to re-jigger first.  We still have to check every time.
    Also, I want to fix every job to "Print Back to Front" because the printer shoots out the pages face up.  Again, sometimes it's there, and sometimes we have to re-set before the job.
    Also, whether we get the default we had set or we re-jigger first, the settings don't stick for every worksheet in an Excel workbook.  Or sometimes not even every page.
    So, who out there has the 100% foolproof guide to NAILING DOWN THOSE SETTINGS FOR EVERYTHING?

  • Default printer does not appear in custom-sized templates

    I posted this question in the 'Pages' community, but received no replies, so I am possting it again here.
    I now have an Epson XP-750 printer-scanner. I have set it as my default printer in System Preferences. When I create a document in Pages whose paper size is one of the standard ones catered for by the XP-750 or open a previously saved one in one of those sizes, or I open a document from one of the templates provided by Pages, the printer shown in Page Setup is always the XP-750. But if I create a document in a custom size (such as a 9 cm x 14 cm correspondence card), Page Setup shows 'Any Printer' until I re-set it to 'XP-750', and even if I save the document or save it as a template and then re-open it, the printer is always shown as 'Any Printer'.
    Is there any way of making the XP-750 'stick' as the printer shown in Page Setup even in these custom documents?

    Thanks for this, Joe Bailey. I am ignorant of programming and cerainly wouldn't dream of trying to make such a modification. But the interesting thing is that if I create a document in MS Word and give it a custom size, the printer's name and paper size are retained after saving, closure and re-opening, though they are not retained in Pages.
    I want to use Pages for my custom-sized correspondence cards because the database that I use for mail merge is in Numbers. I suppose I could export it as Excel and use that with a Word correspondence card, but it all gets a bit messy, especially when it comes to updating the database, and will be a lot of work, as I have several such cards with different letter-heads, etc.
    I contacted Epson about this problem, and they said it was a matter for the application in which the custom-sized document was created — i.e. Pages in my case — so according to Epson it is not a matter of the printer driver.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 not able to be set as default printer

    I've just installed the Officejet Pro 8600 on my wireless network.  It was added correctly using WPS andindicated no problems found on the wireless network test results that the printer did. All items were listed as 'PASS'. It is showing up in the device and printers on my Windows7  64-bit machine. When I right-click on the printer icon, it does not allow me any option to set it as my default printer and it also doesn't show up as an available printer from any application to print (like from MS Office). The device driver was auto-located by Windows, so there is also no option for me to update it. Anyone have a solution for what I need to do to get the printer available to actually print too?? Thanks.

    Hi,
    I had a smiliar problem for the same printer that I bought just yesterday.
    Despite numerous troubleshooting tasks, I was still unable to make the printer my default one.
    I tried
    - switching from wireless to USB connected
    - uninstalling and reinstalling
    - cleaning registry entires as directed here:
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-All-in-One-Install-Setup-e-g-Windows-8/Cannot-Set-HP-Officejet-...
    - running troubleshooting wizards and more...
    So... after yet another re-installation, I went here:
    https://h30495.www3.hp.com/help/about
    and clicked on Printer Support under Additional Help (down at the bottom)
    - choose North America
    - choose HP Support - United States (English) --> Product Support and Troubleshooting -
    - now - here - IMPORTANT - http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-drivers.html :
    DO NOT  Enter a product name/number
    - but choose
    Or automatically find your products and solutions - click on START button
     you may need to ALLOW your antivirus software to scan your computer and after a minute or so you will get a response like this:
    1 HP products were discovered
    »HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g                 Serial Number:                                 Product #  here                                               Product Number:                                 Number here
    Now got to Start - Devices and Printers and RIGHT CLICK on the HP printer device and choose Printer Properties:
    The GENERIC NAME  "HP Officejet Pro 8600" needs to be replaced with FULL NAME of your printer:
    HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
    Click "Apply"  - click OK
    Now make your printer DEFAULT
    GOOD LUCK!

  • Can Reader pick up the Default Page Size of a printer that is not the Windows Default Printer?

    We have a web based application that generates PDF documents via Crystal Reports.
    We are using Adobe Reader 8
    The PDF pages are displayed within an Internet Explorer window where the the users then print the document.
    The application is designed so the user only gets one chance to print the document (ie they cant come back and change printer settings if they happen to print the document out incorrectly)
    The document needs to be printed on A3 paper, full duplex.
    We have a printer set-up decidated to the printing of the documents generated by this application.  The default page size of this printer is set of A3.
    If we set this dedicated printer as the Windows Default Printer we have no problems at all.  The default page size (A3) is picked up and the document is printed correctly.
    If any other printer is set as the Windows Default Printer (eg one that has a default page size of A4), the users must obviously select the correct printer from the Print Dialogue Box -however when the user selects the dedicated A3 printer, the page size remains as A4 (page size of the Windows Default Printer).  This means the user must remember to change the paper size to A3 each time.
    Out users find IT a struggle at the best of times - anything that makes the process simpler is very welcomed!
    Is there a way to ensure the default page size of the printer is respected when that printer is not the Windows Default Printer?

  • Why do I get the mesasge, default printer is not compatible with this version of photoshop elements

    When I print from photoshop elements 13, I get the message, default printer is not compatible with this version of photoshop elements

    Hi ,
    Please update to PSE 13.1
    13.1 has solved this problem.
    Refer to this link.

  • Printer install, test print ok, will not print anything else, cannot select as default printer

    Printer installs fine, test pages, alignment pages, colour print pages all test fine, they are selected to print from the option on control panel. Trying to print from any other program, the printer is not listed as an option. Going through control panel, try selecting it as default printer, following messge given :
    Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709). Double check the printer name and make sure the printer is connected to the network.
    Printer connected via USB direct to my single laptop. Uninstalled and re installed, as per troubleshooting instuctions. Ran troubleshooting program and HP print and scan doctor.  Only info given was that it was not default printer, when asked to fix the problem it states it cannot.
    Had a previous HP printer scanner, all removed (it broke, hence the new one), never had a problem with the install, this new one is being a real pain, any help would be appreciated

    Hello again mattcpx ,
    I think what we are going to need to do is start right from scratch.  Seeing that the only printer listed is generic printer icon from Windows 7(This icon does nothing for the printer you have installed), we are going to uninstall your printer and do a proper re install.
    Lets start off by removing the usb cable from both the printer and from the computer and leave it disconnected until further notice.
    The first link I have for you gives detailed instructions for Uninstalling the Printer Software.
    Once the uninstall is complete, please reboot the computer so that the changes take affect.
    When the computer is back on, disable any firewalls or anti virus protection that you may have running.
    Please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
    Do a power cycle on the printer with the use of the on/off button.  This will do a semi power reset on the printer.
    The next step that we are going to take is to download and save the HP Officejet 4630 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers to the desktop of the computer.  This will create a new icon on the computer and make the download easy to find.
    Double click on the new icon and follow the installation instructions.  The installation will prompt you when to connect the usb cable so please do NOT connect it before hand.
    Let me know how you make out.
    If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.
